PRESIDENT’S PERSPECTIVE
BY WALTER COSTELLO
I traveled to Hong Kong during the last week
of March. While there, I was invited to the
Hong Kong Intimate Apparel Industries
Association Dinner by its Chairman, Kenneth
Wong. With over 500 guests in attendance,
including many Americans, I was given an
honored seat at the head table. During a
speech by a local government representative,
it was interesting to hear minimum wages
and workers rights mentioned as areas of importance for HKIAIA
members. I also had the pleasure of meeting Professor Xiaoming Tao
of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Professor Tao is the Chair of
Textile Technology and Head of the Institute of Textiles and Clothing.
Another exciting event that I attended recently was the “Future of
Fashion” at FIT. This year's amazing senior collection runway show
featured more Intimate Apparel than any other category. Included
were two students who have received scholarships from the UFC:
Amy Bittner and Nathalie Quirin. Congratulations to both!
Please mark your calendars and plan on attending the Program
Committee's May 24 panel discussion on Social Media to be held at
the St. Giles Hotel. (See details on page 5 of this newsletter.) ■

10 THINGS YOU CAN DO TODAY TO WOW TOMORROW
Frances Cole Jones, author of “The Wow Factor” and
“How to Wow,” believes that every encounter provides
you with an opportunity to positively influence colleagues, employers, even competitors.
On March 30, at a members-only event, Ms. Jones discussed the steps to improving your “wow” factor,
including identifying and transforming the business
habits that dull your edge.
It’s all captured on video and you can see it — as it happened — by visiting:

UNDERFASHION CLUB SPONSORS
LINGERIE AWARD AT THE 2011
“STRETCH TO THE FUTURE” DESIGN COMPETITION
BY EDGAR TRINIDAD
For the fourth year in a row, the Underfashion Club sponsored the
lingerie award at RadiciSpandex Corporation’s 2011 “Stretch to the
Future” Scholarship Design Competition held in conjunction with
the Fashion School of Kent State University.
Fifty-three students from the junior class competed with garments
designed in stretch fabrics containing RadiciSpandex RadElast®
spandex donated by Ames Textiles, Cyberknit Fabrics, Darlington
Fabrics, Eagle Fabrics, Guilford Performance Textiles, Markbilt
Technical Fabrics, McMurray Fabrics, Polartec, Prescott Finishing,
Rentex, Royal Lace, Sextet Fabrics, Swisstex, TDB Tecidos and
Tweave LLC.
The competition, held on April 21 at KSU’s New York design studio,
also honored celebrated eveningwear designer Tadashi Shoji, who
accepted the “Stretch to the Future” award. The judging panel
headed by Tadashi selected scholarship winners in the categories of
eveningwear, activewear, swimwear, lingerie and a grand prize overall.
Alexandria Petrus (pictured here with her winning bra-and-panty set,) was the recipient of the Club’s $2,000 award.
Winning top honors in eveningwear was Sarah Ineson, who also won the Grand Prize for a one-shouldered black
gown. Amanda Heslinga took the activewear prize, while the swimwear prize went to Madelyn Winfield.
In addition to Tadashi, the judging panelists included Kristy Chen, the competition’s grand prize winner in 2005 who
is now an assistant designer at the contemporary label Doo.Ri; RadiciSpandex Corp. Marketing Manager Kim Hall;
Intimate Apparel Specialist Camille Block; Virginia Borland, NY Correspondent for Textile World; Linda Corby, Sales
