Getting To Tahiti
Easier to travel to than most imagine,
Tahiti’s Faa’a International Airport is only
a 5.5 hour flight from Auckland on Air
Tahiti Nui or Air New Zealand with 4
flights in total per week.
Officially known as French Polynesia, the
118 islands and atolls are scattered
across five far-flung archipelagoes and
cover over 1.5 million square miles of the
South Pacific. The ocean area is about
the size of Western Europe, while the
land area is only slightly larger than the
state of Rhode Island.
After going through immigration and customs — visitors will exit the terminal into
an open-air area where all tourists are greeted upon arrival with a welcome lei
and then taken to their accommodating resort or escorted to the inter-island
carrier, Air Tahiti, for direct connections to the outer islands.
Air Tahiti services over 40 landing strips throughout the five archipelagoes of
French Polynesia with 11 turboprop aircraft. The island of Moorea is less than 10
minutes from Tahiti, while the most visited island of Bora Bora is a 45-minute
flight.
The most visited of the archipelagoes is the Society Islands — home to Bora Bora,
Moorea, Taha’a and the largest island in French Polynesia, Tahiti. The Society
Islands are a group of high, tropical lush islands encircled by coral reefs — offering
beautiful azure blue and turquoise lagoons, the world’s most ideal location for
Tahiti’s signature overwater bungalow.
Once you arrive in French Polynesia, all guests are greeted with Tahiti’s traditional
Tiare flower. This fragrant gardenia is seen regularly throughout the islands.
Tradition holds that, if taken, women and men wear a flower behind their left ear
(same side as one’s heart), whereas if they are single, they wear it behind the right
ear.

Why Tahiti?
Wedding Chapels
Many of the resorts throughout the islands of Tahiti have wedding chapels for
couples that prefer to have a Western-style ceremony.
Overwater Bungalows
Tahiti’s signature accommodations! Sleep above the waters in your thatchedroof bungalow, villa or suite with all the amenities of a first-class hotel.
Polynesian Spas
Experience true relaxation and rejuvenation at one of the many luxurious
spas while being nurtured by the tropical abundance.
Tahitian Pearls
Mother Nature’s perfect gem is born in Tahiti’s gorgeous lagoons. There
is no better place in the world to shop for a Tahitian cultured “black pearl.”
Private Islands
Celebrate your wedding on your own tiny, private islet (called motu in
Tahitian). Weddings can be organized on gorgeous white-sand beaches
or on a secluded hilltop.
Snorkeling & Diving
Share the warm crystal-clear lagoons and swift, ocean passes with
schools of brightly colored fish, manta rays, turtles and more. You can
also feed the stingrays with a local guide.
History & Culture
Discover the rich history and culture of Tahiti with a local guide. Visit the
ancient, open-air temples, called marae, and uncover the ancient Tahitian
traditions of dance and music.
Tahiti: Queen of The Pacific
Tahiti-Nui Mare’are’a
Polynesian songs have bestowed this famous South Pacific island many names
such as “Great Tahiti of the Golden Haze,” “Mounting Place of the Sun,” and “Land
of the Double Rainbows.” Legends describe Tahiti-Nui and Tahiti-Iti as a great fish
that swam away from the sacred waters of Havai’i.
Tahiti, the largest island in the country, towering over the ocean like a proud and
royal Queen, is appropriately crowned by a circle of majestic peaks. The
mountainous interior is adorned with deep valleys, clear streams and high
waterfalls, all bathed in the green iridescence of Mother Nature’s light. The coastal
lands, edged with a rugged coastline, are home to fields of tropical flowers, as well
as most of the island’s population. Papeete, meaning “water basket,” was once a
gathering place where Tahitians came to fill their calabashes with fresh water. Now
the invigorating capital city and gateway of the country, Papeete, boasts world-class
resorts, spas, fine dining, unique restaurants, nightclubs, vibrant markets, pearl
shops and boutiques. Tahiti... just the word — the world’s definition of
paradise.
A Playground of Nature
“Tahiti is an extraordinary work of creation — a steepled gem of wondrous green”.
National Geographic magazine, in 1920, helped open the eyes of the world to the
beauty of the island of Tahiti. The author circled the island on foot and discovered
that the beauty of the landscape and of the people rivaled any place on Earth.
Eighty-five years later, the island of Tahiti is still
a rich oasis of nature in the South Pacific. Within the hidden interior is an unspoiled
land of towering waterfalls, rushing rivers, deep flower-filled valleys, and colossal
peaks rising more than one mile high.
For the Visitor, Tahiti Means Unlimited Possibilities:
Excitement of shopping along the waterfront and in the public market of Papeete
for Tahitian collectibles such as pareu, monoi oil, artwork, music CDs, precious
native wood carvings, and beautiful Tahitian pearls.
Exploration of the pristine interior and beautiful coastline by 4x4 safari, guided
nature hikes, escorted tour or rental car.
Discovery of the lagoon waters by diving, snorkeling, sailing, surfing, deep-sea
fishing, outrigger canoeing or guided catamaran tour.
Relaxation at the surprising number of restaurants around Papeete and at the
enjoyable roulottes along the waterfront in Vai’ete Square.
Enjoyment of the beachside resorts featuring luxurious spas; spectacular shows;
fine restaurants; and the full range of rooms, suites and bungalows.

Moorea: The Magical Island
Aimeo i Te Rara Varu
This, the island’s poetic name, comes from its eight majestic mountain ridges;
however, the name was later changed to Moorea—meaning “yellow lizard”—
following a dream by a high priest. Polynesian legend describes the panorama of
volcanic ridges as the second dorsal fin of the fish that became the island of Tahiti.
These pinnacles later inspired the mythical “Bali Hai” that was based on James
Michener’s book, Tales of the South Pacific.
A few minutes from the island of Tahiti by plane, and only 30 minutes by highspeed catamaran, Moorea soars magically out of the ocean in an explosion of
green velvet — what you would imagine a South Seas island to be. A wide, shallow
lagoon surrounds the island’s vertical mountains where poetic threads of waterfalls
tumble down fern-softened cliffs. Peaceful meadows flanked by pinnacles of green
will fill your senses and renew your belief in the majesty of nature. Pastel-painted
houses, surrounded by gardens of hibiscus and birds of paradise, circle the island
in a fantasy of happy, yet simple villages. A favorite among repeat visitors who all
agree: The beauty of Moorea is unforgettable.
Perfection Bestows Perfection!
Tahiti is the best place in the world to shop for pearls. The warm lagoon waters of
the islands and atolls is Mother Nature’s choice for the cultivation of her pure living
gem: the Tahitian Cultured Pearl. With this first-hand expertise and infinite selection
of dozens of major pearl retailers on all the islands, visitors quickly discover that
this is the best place in the world to learn about and shop for pearls.
Commonly known as “Black Pearls,” Tahitian Cultured Pearls range widely in
pricing, size, shape and colors; visitors are encouraged to visit several merchants
during their vacation to learn about judging quality and style to help determine their
preference.
For the Visitor, Moorea Offers Drama and Adventure:
Discovery of the many shops featuring
locally made, hand-crafted products.
Enchantment

of
bright-green
valleys
encircled by the sentinel-like mountain
ridges.
Excitement of the liquid playground with
warm lagoon waters for snorkeling,
jetskiing, canoeing and diving.
Discovery of the many shops featuring
“made in Moorea” products.
Enjoyment of the fine-dining restaurants
within the resorts and in the small villages
that line the shores.
Exploration of the historic sites hidden
under a canopy of lush forests.
Relaxation in the majestic setting of the
resorts and their Polynesian spas.
Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort & Spa
The newlyweds are wrapped together in their “Tifaifai” (traditional Tahitian quilt)
cover in symbol of their new union and then carried away in grand procession
by four Polynesian Warriors on top of a Royal Chair.
A Perfectly Located Resort
What better place to experience the dramatic splendor of this South Seas
fantasy island than from one of the 106 overwater or garden pool bungalows at
this romantic resort.
The Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort & Spa is set amidst abundant tropical
gardens and rimmed by a white sandy beach and a brilliant 10-acre lagoon
teeming with friendly tropical fish, a gentle water playground for our guests.

Bora Bora: The Romantic Island
Pora Pora
The ancient name, meaning “first born,” came from legends describing this as the
first island to rise when Taaroa, the supreme god, fished it out of the waters after
the mythical creation of Havai’i, now known as Raiatea. Although the letter “B”
does not exist in the Tahitian language, when Captain Cook first heard the name
he mistook the softened sound of the Tahitian “P” for “B” and called the island
“Bora Bora.”
Bora Bora
Less than an hour flight from the islands of Tahiti or Moorea, Bora Bora, with a
lagoon resembling an artist’s palette of blues and greens, is love at first sight.
Romantics from around the world have laid claim to this island where the castlelike Mount Otemanu pierces the sky. Lush tropical slopes and valleys blossom with
hibiscus, while palm-covered motu circle the illuminated lagoon like a delicate
necklace. Perfect white-sand beaches give way to emerald waters where colorful
fish animate the lush, coral gardens, home of the gentle manta ray. This could
easily be described as the center of the romantic universe, where luxury resorts
and spas dot the island with thatched-roof villas and fabled ambience, vibrant
markets, pearl shops and boutiques. Simply said, Bora Bora is the most beautiful
island in the world.
For the Visitor, the Majesty of Bora Bora Offers:
Enchantment from the neon-lit turquoise lagoon waters with unending days of
exploration through snorkeling and diving.
Excitement above the lagoon by outrigger canoe, Boston Whaler, waverunner,
jet ski and dramatic sunset cruises aboard a catamaran sailboat.
Exploration of the panoramic overlooks found by hike or 4x4 accompanied by
entertaining local guides.
Discovery through the world-renowned shopping featuring Tahitian cultured
pearls, perfumes, oils, hand-crafted woods and artwork.
Romance in the natural ambience of the legendary resorts and Polynesian
spas; gourmet restaurants; and overwater bungalows, villas and suites.

Traditional Polynesian Wedding Ceremony
The Polynesian wedding ceremony is held in the privacy of the private island of the
Hilton Bora Bora Nui Resort & Spa: the Motu Tapu, offering spectacular sunset
views. The decor is Polynesian style with its palm trees, tropical flowers, near the
water’s edge of turquoise colour lagoon. On your arrival, one of our hostesses
meets both of you to review all the details of the ceremony. She also assists you
for any special arrangement such as hair dresser, photographer, spa, romantic
dinner, private excursion and tours before or after the ceremony.
A Tahitian priest welcomes both of you, before performing the traditional and
romantic ceremony. A royal procession carried by Polynesian warriors, will escort
the bride. A Tahitian name will be given, which will accompany you through your
life. The newlyweds are then wrapped together in their“Tifaifai”(Tahitian Quilt)
cover in symbol of their new union.

Huahine: Tahiti’s Garden of Eden
An Open-Air Museum
Although “crowded” seldom comes to mind in describing Tahiti & Her Islands,
the word perfectly describes the density of Huahine’s historical sites. In fact,
the famous archaeological site near the village of Maeva has the largest
concentration of pre-European
marae (stone temples) in Polynesia. Now
almost fully restored, over 200 archeological
stone structures have survived centuries of
natural destruction. These structures lie
within yards of one another along the shore
of Lake Fauna Nui and on the sacred and
scenic Matairea Hill and include marae of
island chieftains, dwellings, horticultural
developments, and religious and ceremonial
monuments.
Here, overlooking the ancient stone fish traps and the ocean beyond, visitors
follow a footpath among royal marae and immense fortification walls, as well as
stone foundations for homes of island chiefs and priests. Other important
historic finds have shown that Huahine has the oldest recorded date of human
occupation among the Society Islands. Discoveries at the recently uncovered
sites date from A.D. 850 to 1200 and include workshops for the construction of
canoes and assembly of fish hooks.
These legends of Huahine can come to life with one of the famous local expert
guides who will share ancient tales and share stories about their unique island
life.
Huahine
About 30 minutes by plane from the island of Tahiti, Huahine, with its lush
forests, untamed landscape and quaint villages, is one of Polynesia’s best-kept
secrets!
A deep, crystal-clear lagoon surrounds the
two islands, while magnificent bays and whitesand beaches add drama and solitude to their
virtues. Relatively unchanged by the modern
world, Huahine offers a slower taste of old
Polynesia. With only eight small villages
scattered across the island, the few residents
welcome visitors with great kindness. Not
surprisingly, this fertile world offers a rich soil
providing the local farmers a bountiful harvest
of vanilla, melons, and bananas. The spell
cast by Huahine will last a lifetime.
For the Visitor, the Unspoiled Environment Means:
Exploration of the huge network of restored ancient royal sites with an
archaeological tour among the hills and shores.
Enchantment from the charming villages and vanilla farms with a relaxing trip
around the islands by car, tour or even bicycle.
Enjoyment of the clear lagoon waters by snorkeling, boating and jet skiing.
Discovery of the underwater world by diving the less discovered sites.
Adventure into the curls and share a wave with globe-trotting surfers.
Relaxation among the serene setting of an isolated and beautiful resort.

Taha’a: The Vanilla Island
Raiatea: The Sacred Island
The islands of Taha’a and Raiatea are very close to one another and are
encircled by the same reef, sharing one immense lagoon. From the island of
Tahiti, it is a one-hour flight to reach either of these islands. For those opting to
stay on the island of Taha’a, the flight will be followed by about a 30-minute boat
ride to the Vanilla Island.
The Vanilla Island
Taha’a, with the rich aroma of vanilla lingering heavily in the air, offers a glimpse
of the traditional, tranquil life of the Tahitians. The flower-shaped island’s simple
beauty is charmed by soft mountain shapes and surrounded by tiny motu with
bright sand beaches. In the fertile valleys cutting within the island, local farmers
grow watermelon, vanilla and copra.
The Sacred Island
Raiatea, meaning “faraway heaven” and “sky with soft light,” was first named
Havai’i after the homeland of the ancient Polynesians and is the most sacred
island in the South Pacific. As the center of religion and culture 1,000 years ago,
legends and myths still lend enchantment to Raiatea’s azure shoals. The greencarpeted mountains covering the interior include the celebrated Mt. Temehani, a
sort of Polynesian Mt. Olympus.
Sailing Capital of the South Pacific
The waters within the lagoons and around the islands of Tahiti are among the
greatest in the world for sailing because of the temperate climate, steady trade
winds, proximity of the islands, central South Pacific location, and abundance of
dramatic anchorages. Of all the islands, Raiatea and Taha’a are a favorite among
sailors.
For The Visitor To Taha’a A More

Tuamotu Atolls: Tahiti’s Strand of Pearls
Tuamotu Atolls
Off the Map in the Atolls
The Tuamotu Atolls can be reached from many of the Society Islands, flights to
Tahiti’s strand of pearls are just over one hour from the islands of Tahiti and
Bora Bora. As you fly into the Tuamotu archipelago, it appears as if hundreds of
pearls were gracefully tossed upon the ocean. Each atoll is a delicate band of
palm-laden coral beaches and motu surrounding a lagoon with water so clear, it
seems infinite. Only a few feet in elevation, these seemingly lost atolls are
dotted with tiny villages where simple Polynesian life welcomes romantics and
divers alike. True oceanic wonders of the world, where excitement and
simplicity share the same breath.
Excerpts from an article by Susan Kaye, author of more than 60 magazine
features about Tahiti:
“The coral atolls rise no more than a few feet above the soothing slurp of the waves.
Many atolls are uninhabited; on others are the tin-roofed homes of fishermen and
pearl farmers; and a few have intimate lodgings that are a perfect match with the
striking beachscapes.
This is my idea of paradise. Placid waters in a palette of blue. All the jewel-bright
fish of the sea just beyond my snorkel mask. Heavenly fares and congenial
restaurants where menus are flush with seafood from the lagoon.
Some of the Tuamotu Atolls are so remote, I’ll see them again only if I’m on a
sailboat bound for nowhere. Still, I’d return in a minute. My husband and I stopped
on one such atoll. We snorkeled and picnicked on a sliver of beach rimmed by a
forest of palms. A local fellow rowed over to our beach with a cache of black pearls.
For less than we sometimes pay for dinner, we pocketed a luminescent pearl that
now dangles from my bracelet, a constant reminder of our languid day.
Above all, the atolls are end-of-the-rainbow isles where everything is all sea and
sky. And always summer.”
Marquesas: The Mysterious Islands
About a three-hour flight from the Society Islands and the Tuamotu Atolls, The
Marquesas, or Henua Enata (“Land of Men”), are seemingly lost at the end of the earth.
Even now, some of the islands are virtually untouched since the era of European
exploration. Their isolation has created an immense pride among the people and a
fascinating culture. The language is unique to Tahiti, as the lilting Marquesan dialect is
traced directly to the ancient Polynesian tongueof Maohi. Natural wonders abound as
1,000-foot waterfalls cascade down volcanic cliffs and towering mountains disappear
into the clouds. This world belongs to the past where the spirits of the ancient Maohi still
live.
Archaeological Discovery
Hidden in the theatre of mountains of the Marquesas is a mother lode of ancient sacred
sites called meae, including ceremonial complexes, stone temples and tiki statues. On
Nuku Hiva, Taipivai Valley and Hatiheu are home to petroglyphs, ruins and ancient
religious sites. On Hiva Oa, a restored complex in Taaoa Valley offers a unique view of
the fierce and proud Marquesan heritage.
Woodcarving
Famous for intricate woodcarvings, Marquesans apply ancestral designs seen nowhere else
on Earth. Carved from precious native woods, Marquesan bowls, plates and statues are
highly prized. These treasures can often be bought directly from the artisans in their studios.
Authors and Artists
The remote Marquesas became a household name in Europe and America with the
arrival of notable writers and painters of their time. Herman Melville, author of Moby
Dick, jumped his whaling ship off Nuku Hiva in 1842 and wrote Typee about his
adventures in the cannibal valleys. Robert Louis Stevenson spent six months here in
1888 and wrote In the South Seas. Jack London sailed to Nuku Hiva in 1907 and wrote
the popular adventure book, South Sea Tales. Jacque Brel, the popular Belgian poet of
song, composed his last works on Hiva Oa. Paul Gauguin brought the beauty of Tahiti to
the world with earth-hued portraits which are now considered priceless. He moved to
Tahiti and lived his last years on Hiva Oa “to give new life” to his imagination.
For The Adventurous Visitor, Everyday Activities Become Unique
Experiences:
Exploration of the high mountains,
remote beaches, hidden waterfalls, and
jungle-like forests by a 4x4 safari truck or
on horseback.
Discovery of the archaeological sites of
stone tiki, ancient dwellings, and
petroglyphs.
Enchantment from the simple and warm
Marquesan people with a history unique
among any civilization on Earth.
Excitement of adventuring onto the sites
used in the TV show “Survivor
Marquesas.”
Enjoyment of shopping for carvings and
sculptures in tiny studios and craft
centers.
Relaxation among the peaceful ambience
and surprisingly delicious cuisine of the
simple, yet elegant, lodges set within the
hillsides overlooking the bays.
Cruising Redefined
Intimate Yet Luxurious, Uncrowded Yet Dramatic
Cruising is redefined in Tahitian waters where we embark on a voyage to explore
these unspoiled isles. Here, the ports-of-call are uncrowded and charming, the
ships are smaller and luxurious, the neon-blue waters within the lagoons are
calm, and the ocean journey between the islands is short. On these voyages,
each island becomes our home for the day with an unending variety of activities
to enjoy.
Water Activities
Floating atop the water playground of Tahiti & Her Islands, each ship offers
unending activities for all ages to explore the lagoons. Daily activities include
jetskiing, windsurfing, waterskiing, parasailing, canoeing, diving, shark feeding
and snorkeling. Or jump on a glass-bottom boat, explore a lagoonarium or sail on
a catamaran.
Shore-side Activities
Surrounded by lush-green peaks, each island welcomes exploration by 4x4 safari
to dramatic overlooks, circle-island trips stopping off at fruit-tasting shops and
historic sites, independent trips for shopping or walking through the villages, or
guided hiking trips into the mountains for an overview of the land and ocean.

Wedding Information
Weddings in the islands of Tahiti are now legally binding. Many of the hotel,
resort and cruise line partners are eager to cater to this new opportunity.
Couples who wish to be legally married in the islands of Tahiti can now have a
memorable and meaningful wedding in one of the most beautiful, romantic
places on Earth!
We have outlined the necessary steps and documents required in order to have
a legal ceremony in French Polynesia. However, we highly recommend working
with a Tahiti Tiare Agent who specializes in destination weddings – or a
destination wedding specialist – to more easily complete this process. The
following information is very thorough, as this process will take approximately
three to five months to complete. So, be sure and plan ahead!
Overseas visitors intending to get married in French Polynesia are required to
select the date of the ceremony, as well as the commune (town) where they
would like their marriage to occur. The documents listed below must be sent at
least 45 days prior to the ceremony to the city hall of the commune where the
wedding will take place. More information, as well as requested documentation,
can be found on our website: www.tahitinow.co.nz
Eligibility to Get Married in French Polynesia:
• Both spouses must be at least 18 years old.
• Neither spouse can be currently married.
• Spouses must be of the opposite sex.
• The couple cannot be related by direct lineage.
• The couple cannot be of French origin or have French residential status.
• The bride and the groom must each choose a witness who must be 18 years of
age or older (if the chosen witness is not present, the mayor’s office can
provide a witness).
Required Documents:
• The “Marriage of Foreign Citizens in French Polynesia” application must be
completed.
• A letter signed and dated by both future spouses, addressed to the mayor of the
commune chosen for the marriage ceremony.
• Proof of identity for both of the future spouses (copies of their passports).
• A certified copy of both spouses’ birth certificates authenticated with an “Apostille”
(note: the birth certificates must have been issued less than 6 months prior to the
date of the marriage). Both of the birth certificates and the “Apostille” must be
translated into French by an approved translator and legalized by the French
Consulate. Translators can be found on the consulate’s website.
• A “Certificate of Non-Marital Status” (“Certificat de Celibat”) signed by a lawyer,
translated into French and legalized by the French Consulate. Lawyers can be found
on the consulate’s website.
• Proof of residency for both of the future spouses (a utility bill or any bill noting
names and physical address will suffice). A photocopy of bills for both spouses is
acceptable.
• Optional, if a prenuptial agreement has been created, it must be translated into
French and authenticated by the French Consulate.
Send All Materials to French Polynesia:
• Expedite all materials to the mayor’s office of the commune in which the spouses
are getting married at least 45 days prior to the ceremony. After submission of the
application file, the mayor’s office will post a Non Opposition to Marriage document
(“publication des bans”).
• The mayor’s office will then contact the bride and groom to advise them of the
approved date and time of the wedding.
The Ceremony:
• On the day of the ceremony the future spouses, guests and the witnesses go to the
Mairie (city hall).
• The mayor (or an appointed representative from the mayor’s office) will perform the
ceremony, in the presence of at least two witnesses in the language chosen by the
wedding couple.
• After the ceremony, the mayor will give the spouses a Marriage Certificate
(“Certificat de Celebration de Mariage”). This certificate will be dated and signed by
the mayor’s office of the commune in which the marriage takes place .

Elements of a Typical Tahitian Wedding
Ceremony
• Tapa is used for wedding ceremonies and also
for important ceremonies between two
chieftainships or as an offering to the gods.
• Tapa is a fabric made out of bread trees “Uru
Pu’up’u” resulting in a white tapa or out of
“Hibiscus tiliaceus” or “Aute” branch resulting in
a dark Tapa, which Tahitians used to wear.
• Certain “tapa” are decorated with symbols or
with Polynesian patterns highlighting the
genealogy of a royal family, for instance.
• The flower that the priest uses is called the
“Auti.” This plant grows almost everywhere and
is used to chase out spirits. They use it also to
make crowns for the Heiva “festival of life” and
also for its medical benefits.
• “Tapa” and “Auti,” and coconut milk are sacred
substances that allow the couple to seal the
union.
Traditional Tahitian Wedding Ceremony
The wedding planning for a traditional Tahitian wedding ceremony generally begins at
least 45 days prior to the ceremony. The marriage is civil and is sealed at a city hall
with the mayor and an interpreter, if needed. Post-wedding parties can be either at a
hotel or on a motu “islet” and are followed by a traditional Tahitian feast.
Overview of a Tahitian Wedding Ceremony Performed at a Resort or Tiki Village
Although there are variations depending on location, the following is a general
description of traditional Tahitian wedding ceremonies throughout the islands of Tahiti.
While the guests are in their bungalow, the priest’s assistants will come to dress up the
bride and groom with white pareu (painted wraps, like sarongs). The couple is adorned
with specially created flower crowns and leis. The ceremony can take place on a beach
or at a resort (some resorts have overwater chapels). The ceremony includes
traditional gowns, a priest, a group of dancers and musicians, tropical flower
arrangements, leis and crowns and a wedding certificate made of traditional “tapa”.
The couple is then wrapped in a“Tifaifai”(Tahitian quilt) following the ceremony. After
the ceremony, a cocktail is served to the couple. A romantic dinner can be prepared on
a secluded, private islet, on the beach, or at a restaurant especially for the wedding
couple.
A professional photographer takes pictures of the ceremony. A memorable “tapa” with
the couples’ joint Tahitian name will be given to commemorate this unforgettable
occasion.
• The flower behind the ear flower can be a hibiscus or a Tiare.
• The music played at the ceremony is a love song accompanied by the
sound of the uklele and guitar.
• The couple is dressed in Tahitian attire, adorned with a traditional pareu,
flowers and a crown lei. Then they are escorted along the shore by
Tahitian dancers, to the sound of ukuleles and guitars playing the
traditional love song, to the private islet where the Tahitian priest is
waiting to unite the couple in a memorable romantic ceremony.
• Flower leis and crowns are exchanged as a sign of their vows, and the
priest baptizes the couple in their new Tahitian names.
• The couple is wrapped in a tifaifai and paddled away in the outrigger
together to spend their first night as a married couple in an overwater
bungalow.
The above information has been collected from various ceremonies throughout the islands.
Each resort and venue has their own variation herein. Please discuss the details of your
wedding ceremony with your wedding planner, resort, cruise ship or venue.

the islands. Visitors should be cautious of overexposure to the tropical sun and
should apply effective sunscreen.

The local currency is the French Pacific franc CPF or XFP. Notes are printed in
denominations of 500, 1,000, 5,000, and 10,000; coins are minted in
denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100. For exchange and cash advances,
international banks can be found in downtown Papeete, at Faa’a Airport, and
