At that time we had not realized that Concorso Italiano is part of Monterey Auto Week, which also includes a major auction and the Pebble Beach Concours. So this year we did it right and attended both concorsi. Auto Week also features more exotics on the streets than you will ever see at once anywhere else. Just watching the trac from our hotel balcony was worth the trip. And in the hotel parking lot were rarities like a Pagani Huayra and a couple of McLarens. This year’s events were the 27th for Concorso Italiano and the 62nd for Pebble Beach. Both events are held on golf courses, Concorso Italiano at the Laguna Seca Golf Ranch and Pebble Beach on the 18th fairway at the famous Pebble Beach golf course. The two events are very dierent. Concorso Italiano is focused on Italian cars, although many nonItalian marques are represented, including Porsche, BMW, and Mercedes Benz. Altogether, about a thousand cars were exhibited this year. Many of the cars were modern, with plenty of 360s, 430s, 458s, 550s, and 575s on display, along with a few 599s. But there were lots of older Ferraris, too; I counted five Daytona coupes, one Daytona Spider, and fourteen Dinos, among many 308s, 328s, Testarossas, 348s, and 355s. The picture of the row of Dinos conveys the ambiance of the event. There was also one Lusso, and there was a 1958 250 GT Berlinetta Tour de France. That car may not have had an engine, as I couldn’t find any exhaust pipes. Not every car on display was entered for judging, but they were all shined up beautifully and a joy to behold. Concorso Italiano is a fairly laidback and relaxed event, but some of PAGE 8 FERRARI CLUB OF AMERICA ROCKY MOUNTAIN REGION SEPTEMBER 2012 of the competitors took it very seriously. Altogether, there were about 250 Ferraris in the show, and one of them took the overall Best of Show Award: a 1955 250 Europa GT, the twotone green car in the accompanying picture. Throughout the day, at a grandstand set up on one of the greens, emcee Keith Martin of Sports Car Market magazine presided over the presentation of cars of interest and the awarding of trophies. Lamborghini had a strong presence at the event, and examples of most Lamborghini models appeared in the show. Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann was a distinguished guest, and he had brought several of his department heads with him. One was his chief of design, who spoke about Lamborghini’s design philosophy, using a sequence of cars from their earliest to the Aventador to illustrate the company’s design principles. The featured marque of this year’s Concorso was Bertone, who presented their radical Nuccio to show their latest ideas. One activity I missed at the grandstand was the launch of the FCA 50th Anniversary Passione 599 GTB HGTE. I presumed it would be on display later somewhere in the Ferrari section of the grounds, but it left after the launch and I didn’t see it. Several car clubs, including FCA, awarded trophies for well prepared cars; quite a few FCA Platinum awards were granted. A variety of cuisines could be purchased for lunch at the event’s food concessions, but this year we signed up for the Alfresco Luncheon, where we were seated at a round table with several other enthusiasts and enjoyed a buet of much higher quality than what was oered by the concessions. At our table, we talked with two enthusiasts who had participated in the Italian Stampede. This is a benefit for the 1199 Foundation, a charity for families of California Highway Patrol members, including members who have fallen in the line of duty. One hundred cars of Italian marques, mostly exotics but also including at least one Fiat, drove on the day before the Concorso from Los Angeles to Monterey on Highway 1 with a police escort and no speed limits. Maybe next year… The Pebble Beach Concours is billed as the leading concours d’elegance in the world. It covers all makes, but it emphasizes older cars; the newest cars in the concours were two 1969 Ferraris. Although I enjoy the modern cars, at a concours I want to see well preserved older models, so the Pebble Beach Concours turned out to be far more fascinating to me. It is quite exclusive, with entry by application and approval. PAGE 9 FERRARI CLUB OF AMERICA ROCKY MOUNTAIN REGION SEPTEMBER 2012 Participation is subject to numerous restrictions; for example, a car can generally be entered only once every ten years. There were only 215 cars in the concours. They included some mesmerizing specimens, such as extremely early models and fanciful cars from India made for Indian maharajas. But since we are mainly interested in Ferraris, I’ll just list the prancing horses on display: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • 1952 212/225 Inter Touring Barchetta 1954 500 Mondial Pinin Farina Coupe 1967 275 GTB/4 1969 365 GTB/4 Pininfarina Coupe Speciale 1969 365 GTC Two 1952 212 Inter Pinin Farina Cabriolets 1954 250 GT Vignale Coupe 1955 375+ Pinin Farina Coupe 1955 250 GT Pinin Farina Berlinetta Speciale 1958 250 GT California Spyder 1959 410 Superamerica Pinin Farina Coupe 1960 250 GT Pinin Farina Cabriolet 1964 400 Superamerica Pinin Farina Coupe 1951 212 Export Tourning Berlinetta 1954 500 Mondial Pinin Farina Spyder 1956 410 Sport Scaglietti Spyder 1957 and 1958 250 GT LWB Berlinettas 1957 500 TRC Scaglietti Spyder 1965 275 GTB longnose. The 275 GTB longnose and the 275 GTB/4 are my personal favorite Ferraris ever. The 275 GTB longnose is shown in this photo; this is an alloybodied car that was entered in the division for competition Ferraris. On the way into the concours proper, we encountered numerous displays by today’s manufacturers, including Ferrari. We happened by as the Ferrari people were preparing for the American debut of the F12 Berlinetta, and we got to see the unveiling. Yes, I’d be happy to upgrade to one of them. The new car is shown in the PAGE 10 FERRARI CLUB OF AMERICA ROCKY MOUNTAIN REGION SEPTEMBER 2012 photo below. To the true car nut, both of these events should be on the mustdo list. I hope to see some RMR members there next year! Bill Terry Is your email about to change? Did you move? Want to update your profile? You can change your profile by logging on to our website.
