DISCOVER GRAZ. CITY. CULTURE. ARCHITECTURE. Hotels. ProgrammE 2012. 2 One of the best-preserved city centres in the world – the Old Town of Graz. Unesco World Cultural Heritage since 1999. We have specially labelled the top 12 places of interest in the historic centre of Graz for you, please see map on page 41. 3 Why a FLIRTATION with Graz can easily turn into a long-term relationship. Only got a couple of days to spare, but still looking to live life to the full? Then a trip to Graz is just the thing. No other city offers so much variety packed into such a small space, together with that touch of sunny southern flair: futuristic architecture alongside medieval houses, alleys and squares; exclusive boutiques overlooking colourful farmers’ markets, cultural and culinary treats on every corner – and all within a few paces of each other. But be warned: a brief flirtation with Graz can easily turn into a long-term relationship. Once you’ve fallen for the European Cultural Capital 2003, you’ll want to come back again – and again. Even if it’s only for another short – but intense – visit. 1. Kunsthaus Graz – the “friendly alien” designed by Peter Cook and Colin Fournier, opened in 2003, Graz’s year as Cultural Capital. 2. Ancient cobbled streets such as Sporgasse provide both a visual and gastronomic feast. 3. Specialities from the region – a typical Styrian farmers’ market, right in the middle of the Old Town. CONTENTS 1 2 2 –29 EXPLORING THE CITY AND ITS SURROUNDINGS 38 – 61 BOOKING FOR GRAZ A taste of pleasures to come: a passion: a range of packages that preview of what awaits you in Graz. are quick and easy to book. 30–37 THE HIGHLIGHTS OF 2012 62 – 67 EVEN MORE CULTURE Festivals, concerts, opera and Overview of museums, theatre – the events of the year. information about Graz. The first step towards a new 3 4 To wander through Graz is to travel back through the ages – each century more beautiful than the one before. 5 BECOME ENGROSSED IN THE CITY. NOT IN THE MAP. Enjoy losing yourself in the city without losing your way: a simple stroll is full of surprises. In the Old Town, a new discovery awaits around every corner: hidden alleys, romantic inner courtyards, ornate façades and magnificent buildings. This “best preserved city centre in Central Europe” is designated a world cultural heritage site by UNESCO, and with good reason: Renaissance, Gothic and Baroque architecture sit side-by-side, while just three minutes’ walk away lies the future: the enigmatic “friendly alien” Kunsthaus has made itself at home, nestled between the ancient houses. Local people love the unique beauty of this beast, and already see it as the city’s second landmark. 1. View over the domes of Graz Cathedral and the tiled roofs of the Old Town. 2. The magnificent Landhaus courtyard with its Renaissance arcades. 3. The twin spiral staircase at the Burg palace of Graz in exemplary late-Gothic style. 4. The Mausoleum, last resting place of Kaiser Ferdinand II. 1 5. Concealed alleyways and romantic squares invite you to stroll around. 3 2 4 5 6 Graz gastronomy has a special focus on regional produce – recently winning the city the title of “Austrian Capital of Delight”. 7 GRAZ – AUSTRIA’S CAPITAL OF CULINARY DELIGHTS. Graz is now the official “Austrian Capital of Delight”. A title awarded to reflect the fact that Graz restaurateurs are excellent hosts, that they focus on regional produce and, last but not least, that Graz has 800(!) city farmers, more than any other Austrian community, and the highest concentration of market days in the whole of Europe! Here in Graz it is the farmers themselves, and not market traders, who sell their delicious specialities. Particular highlights are the Gourmet Travel Festival, when the best and most creative chefs in the world gather in Graz, the gastronomic guided tours (p.27) and outings to the Regions of Delight (p. 29). Long Table of the Capital of Delight 18/8/2012 www.genusshauptstadt.at As “Capital of Delight” partners, a number of inns and restaurants in Graz focus particularly on regional cuisine. For a list of these partners see page 25. 1. Graz is a city of outstanding beers, with a tradition of brewing going back centuries. 2. Bottles don’t stay unopened for long. The wine is just too delicious. 2 1 3. Tastes delicious: Styrian cream of pumpkin soup with pumpkin seed oil. 3 8 MUMUTH – The house of music and music drama at the University of Music and Performing Arts. Just one of many examples of exciting architecture in Graz. 9 IT’S NOT EVERY DAY ONE GETS TO EXPERIENCE A UNESCO “CITY OF DESIGN”. Currently there are ten “UNESCO Cities of Design” worldwide – and Graz is one of them! “City of Design” is about an attitude of dedication and expression of an urban culture that regards the considered design of living space as a central value. Evidence of this in Graz is certainly not solely supplied by the spectacular architectural creations of recent years, such as the Kunsthaus gallery, Murinsel island, MUMUTH, Botanical Garden, MP09, university buildings and plenty more besides. Rather, it manifests itself in the enormous creative potential evident in a wide variety of disciplines; from art to commerce, from fashion to technology. www.graz-cityofdesign.at DESIGN MONTH 27/04 – 27/05/2012 1. MP09: the latest architectural highlight in Graz; eyewear designer showroom and office building for creative enterprises. 2. The “Murinsel” by Vito Acconci links the historic centre of Graz to the Mariahilf district; it’s a pleasure to run aground at the very modern Murinselcafé. 3. Every 8th job in the city belongs to the creative sector, for example “fashion design”. 4. Graffiti on the “Murstrand”, a trendy meeting place by the river right in the middle of Graz historic centre. Fashionshow | Designfestival assembly Design: Kao Pao Shu, 2008; Foto: Marco Rossi 1 2 3 4 10 The view from the Graz Schlossberg over the tiled roofs of the city is breathtaking. 11 MILLIONS OF FIRST KISSES HAVE HAPPENED HERE. ALTHOUGH THE VIEW CAN BE QUITE DISTRACTING. Sooner or later you’ll end up here, on the wooded hill right in the middle of the Old Town, and you won’t be able to get enough of the view: looking down from the Graz Schlossberg onto the brick-red roofs of the city, it’s an indescribable feeling. New lovers, however, are usually less interested than most – and this has always been Graz’s favourite spot for romance. It’s still well worth taking a look around: the clock tower alone is a fascinating curiosity. The small and big hands are the wrong way round, causing some visitors to check their watches in confusion. Anecdote has it that when Napoleon wanted to blow up the clock tower, the people of Graz simply bought it back from him … Their vision ensured that one of the finest views in Graz remains today – not to mention the wide range of gastronomy to be found up here. 1 1. One of the most romantic spots on the Schlossberg: the Starcke-Haus restaurant. 2./5. The restaurants on the Schlossberg are a favourite haunt for locals. 3 2 4 3./4. The Schlossbergbahn funicular railway: one of three ways to get to the top. Equally spectacular is the glass lift inside the hill. 5 12 There are lots of faces concealed in the façade of the “Gemaltes Haus”. 13 DON’T GO LOOKING FOR CULTURE. IT WILL FIND YOU. You’ve just emerged from looking at ancient knights’ armour in the Zeughaus, and now suddenly you’ve come across a kind of spaceship, a couple of hundred metres up the street. Don’t panic: the “friendly alien” Kunsthaus is not a UFO; it’s Graz’s international modern art gallery. Graz – an abundance of museums, galleries, exhibitions, architecture and design. Even the main railway station can’t help being culturally inspired: vivid areas of colour and flamboyant textures make it a fascinating space of illusion. This variety, and a penchant for the visionary, were indeed decisive in Graz being awarded the title “City of Design”. 1. The Graz Armoury houses the world’s largest historically evolved collection of weapons. 2. Transformed from a place of transit to a space of magic: the lobby at Graz Railway Station designed by Peter Kogler. 3./4. Kunsthaus Graz – leading address for exciting contemporary art. 5. The 750-metre-long red running track now installed as a visual frame marks the completion of another step forward in the revitalisation of the Jakomini district. 1 3 2 4 5 14 Kastner & Öhler: visit what is surely the most beautiful house of fashion in Austria. From the perfumery on the ground floor to the Skywalk high above the roofs of Graz you encounter international flair on a par with the world’s most fashionable cities. 15 THE LATEST FASHION TREND? SHOPPING IN THE HISTORIC CENTRE OF GRAZ! Somewhere in the depths of your shopping bag, a new designer handbag nestles up to a bottle of pumpkin-seed oil. Wherever else would you find such a huge range of great buys? Seasoned Graz shoppers wryly call it “shopping with culture”: exclusive designer labels in the boutiques around Herrengasse, antiques on the “Art Mile” in Sackstrasse, or the cool, wacky stores run by the young creative set down Mariahilferstrasse – all year round Graz is an attraction for creative and arty people of all kinds. Or enjoy the surprise of spontaneously tasting samples at the farmers’ markets, such as a “Stamperl” (glass) of homemade schnaps or a slice of tasty “Schmalzbrot”. 1./2. Graz is famous for shoes, fashion and top design. 3. Behind the Opera House on KaiserJosef-Platz square is the largest farmers’ market in Graz. 4. Your invitation to shop: modern design and beautiful home accessories. 1 2 3 4 16 A romantic weekend? Graz offers the perfect backdrop for unforgettable moments. 17 Superb dining, good music, cool events: Graz nightlife is lively and easy-going. It would be such a shame not to try at least a taste of Graz nightlife. Because at night the city really comes alive – kept young, lively and optimistic by its 40,000 students at four universities and two technical colleges. Graz: the city is a stage, a scene, a backdrop, a programme of events! Whether at the classics of Graz nightlife, or the young new pubs that are constantly arriving on the scene in the streets around the university or on the right bank of the Mur. In the bars and pubs surrounding the Kunsthaus you’ll get great drinks served with a slice of artistic flair. 1. A gastronomic excursion into Styrian cuisine – recommended any time! 2. From bar to bar by foot – so much to choose from, and all just a short step away. 3. Open-air cultural events, high above the city: the Kasematten stage. 1 4. Amongst the magnificent facades around Hauptplatz square, the “Luegghaus” stands out particularly with its stucco facade and arcades. 3 2 4 18 Discovering Graz by bike can be a lot of fun. Bicycles can be rented from several central points in the city. 19 GRAZ – A CITY WITH MANY GREEN HEARTS. Graz has long been known as the bicycle-friendliest city in Austria – locals discovered early on that the quickest and greenest way to get around is on two wheels. So it’s no coincidence that Graz is home to some of the world’s technology and market leaders in biomass, solar thermal energy, water technology and waste recycling. Graz is also the highlight of the 360km-long Mur bicycle path from Lungau to Bad Radkersburg. Nearby lie south and west Styria, Regions of Delight and perfect destinations for relaxed excursions by bike. Mountain bikers, on the other hand, will love the fast trails surrounding Graz, which have become an Eldorado for the sportier side of cycling. www.mur-radweg.at, www.bikeculture.at 1. Surrounding the world heritage site of Eggenberg Palace, the park itself is well worth a visit. Be sure to visit the state rooms inside. 2. Downhill all the way… 3. In the middle of the city? In the Graz Stadtpark you are surrounded by nature. 21 3 2 4. Not too fast – or you’ll miss the beautiful countryside. 4 20 Discover what life was like on a traditional Austrian farm: the Open Air Museum in Stübing. 21 AND THERE’S MORE … UNMISSABLE SIGHTS AROUND GRAZ. … and you thought you’d already seen all there was to see? Then just take a look at what there is right on Graz’s doorstep: for example the nearby Bärenschutzklamm, a spectacular rocky ravine with 24 thundering waterfalls. It once provided shelter to bears: nowadays it is photographers who gather here. Close by, the Lurgrotte caves at Peggau are a natural spectacle in a class of their own: special lighting effects make the huge stalactites and stalagmites appear even stranger. And if you thought culture was only to be found in town, you should take a look at Stübing’s Austrian Open Air Museum and its 90 lovingly restored historic farmhouses. Or else the Jakobuskirche in Thal, an exquisite church designed by painter Prof. Ernst Fuchs. You can even pay a visit to the oldest Cistercian monastery in the world, Stift Rein, whose doors are open to the public. www.regiongraz.at 1. From the historic city centre to a natural idyll it’s just a few minutes’ drive. Don’t miss the beautiful surroundings of Graz – they’re more than worth a visit. 3. A warm welcome is to be found within the venerable walls of the Stift Rein monastery. 2. How about a little stroll? The area surrounding Graz is full of adventure. 4. Try your hand at exploring caves: Lurgrotte is just 15 km away and an unforgettable experience. 1 2 3 4 22 Vineyards as far as the eye can see. And never far from a Buschenschank. 23 THE VERY SAME WINE YOU’VE JUST TASTED IN GRAZ ... Just half an hour’s drive away lie the rolling hills of the south Styrian wine-growing region, home to world-class vintages and rich in tradition. Enjoy both in one of the many “Buschenschänke” to be found here, rustic taverns producing their own wines and food – such as the typical “Brettljause”, a wooden platter of assorted hams, pâtés and salami. If you find yourself in west Styria then you should definitely try a glass of “Schilcher”, the famous dry rosé produced only in this area, and 1 much loved by connoisseurs. Another famous regional product of quite a different kind are the Lipizzaner horses of the Vienna Court Riding School, which are reared in Styria and return here to rest at the end of their careers. The ancient castles of the region, on the other hand, are not the place for peace and quiet. Schloss Herberstein is home to a wildlife park, while above the towering fortress at Riegersburg falcons circle: tame, but no less impressive for it. 1. Wine routes meander through the landscape south of Graz – each one more romantic than the last. 2. The invading Turks never managed to capture the majestic fortress of Riegersburg. Nowadays it’s nearly always overrun – by hundreds of visitors. 3. Irresistible temptations await you in the Styrian wine-growing region. 4. The Lipizzaner stud farm at Piber: kindergarten to the world-famous horses of the Spanish Court Riding School of Vienna. 2 4 3 5. Magnificent from afar and close up: the romantic inner courtyards of the region’s castles. 5 24 365 DAYS A YEAR: THE CAPITAL OF DELIGHT.
