2010 Annual Report - Pike Place Market Foundation
2 0 0 9 – 2 0 1 0 A N N U A L R E P O R T ALL FOUR ONE • ONE FOR ALL Pike Market Medical Clinic • Pike Market Child Care & Preschool • Pike Market Senior Center • Downtown Food1 Bank DEAR FRIENDS On August 17, 2009, the Market Foundation celebrated its 27th anniversary, the Market’s 102nd anniversary, and Rachel, our beloved piggy bank’s 23rd birthday. During the year, we also celebrated other feats. First—with your help—we surpassed the $16 million mark in dollars given to the Market’s human service and heritage programs since 1982. We are proud of that number. At the same time, we see the needs of the 10,000 low-income people who used the Market’s Clinic, Preschool, Food Bank and Senior Center last year continue to grow. For a good part of the year, our sights were focused on finding the funds necessary to expand the 27-year-old Preschool. With extraordinary help from the Washington Legislature and our own Senator Ed Murray we were awarded the last $1 million needed. When the Preschool project is completed, it will top off our decade-long endeavor to refurbish and expand the Market’s human service facilities. Meanwhile, clients continue to enjoy the new Senior Center (opened in 2006) and Clinic (2008). A new partnership was forged in 2009 between the Seattle Hotel Association and the Market Foundation as we became the beneficiary of the Evening of Hope, the association’s annual gala. The Pike Place Market is visited by 10 million people each year, many of whose stays in Seattle are made memorable by the welcome they receive at Seattle hotels. We are pleased to have this new opportunity to connect Seattle’s hoteliers to the Market’s human service side too. On April 20th, 2010 the Market Foundation board hosted the 27th annual “Cut the Pie” party and awarded grants totaling $627,615 from donations to our 2009 – 2010 fundraising campaigns. None of these fabulous things would ever happen without you and your help to fill the Food Bank with groceries, educate the kids, feed and house the seniors, and care for the sick. We are awed by your generosity and your commitment to the Market and its neighborhood. And we thank you with all our hearts. Becky Bogard Marlys Erickson, President, Board of Directors Executive Director 2 Pike Market Medical Clinic • Pike Market Child Care & Preschool • Pike Market Senior Center • Downtown Food Bank Activity Highlights 2009 – 2010 We were honored to be chosen as the beneficiary of the Seattle Hotel Association’s annual gala, Evening of Hope, on February 6. Millions of Seattle visitors learn stories of the Market from their hotel concierge, making this partnership with the 53 member hotels especially meaningful for us. We liked the $195,000 we received too! $20,000 to the Pike Place Market PDA to provide 10,000 Market Fresh coupons for the Market’s lowincome residents and human service clients. Market Fresh coupons can be used to buy fresh produce at the Market’s farm table and produce stands. Our new program, the Second Century Society, was met with generous support by a number of long-term supporters. With an initial matching fund of $500,000 made by the board and by Jeannie and Bruce Nordstrom, we were able to match donors’ irrevocable bequests. Donors who make bequests of $25,000 (or more) receive an immediate dollar-for-dollar match from the matching fund and enjoy an endowed fund in their name immediately, during their lifetime. The 39th annual Street Festival was held on May 30th and 31st. This event originated as a thank you to the citizens of Seattle for saving the Market from the wrecking ball in 1971 and continues as a way for us to open our neighborhood to folks who enjoy live music, quality crafts and endless fun in the kid’s zone. Summer at the Market always features Sunset Supper and 2009 kept up the tradition when more than 80 restaurants, wineries and breweries served their acclaimed specialties. The cobblestones of Pike Place glowed in the moonlight and live music kept 1,200 guests dancing under the stars. Volunteers make all this happen with more than 3,022 hours contributed to produce events, assist in the office, and put their talents to use in many ways to support the Market Foundation’s mission. For the past 16 years, a group of dedicated volunteers have collected unsold produce throughout the height of the summer season. Food Link gleaned 53,760 pounds of useable food that was distributed to the hungry. Rachel, our beloved bronze piggy bank, celebrated her 23rd birthday on August 17th, the Market’s 102nd birthday. She’s raised more than $180,000 for the Market’s human services in her lifetime. Pike Market Medical Clinic • Pike Market Child Care & Preschool • Pike Market Senior Center • Downtown Food Bank 3 $45,150 4 To cover the costs of 7,525 bags of groceries— 1/5 of all bags the bank will distribute in the coming year. DOWNTOWN FOOD BANK “ It’s the people and it fills my spirit… the Food Bank does so much more than just nourish those in need, it nourishes their soul and builds community. The Food Bank is a positive gathering place for those we serve in our community.” Lynn, Volunteer In the best all of worlds there would be no need for the Downtown Food Bank. Sadly, the reality is that today in Downtown Seattle there remains a significant need. Over 50% of people living Downtown are considered lowincome and the Downtown community has the largest number of homeless people than any neighborhood in the city. Lynn began volunteering as a child, her family was always helping with clothing and food drives. So, it was only natural that five years ago she found herself volunteering at the Downtown Food Bank and for the last year working as a full time Title 5 employee—a King County community service work program for seniors. Answering the call of today’s challenging economic environment, last year the Downtown Food Bank—the third busiest in King County—handled over 45,000 visits and provided over 500,000 pounds of bagged groceries to the elderly, homeless and working poor from within our downtown community. Under Lynn’s supervision, the Food Bank recently created a clothing bank which offers clothing and small household commodities one day each month. This exciting new endeavor continues to grow as well as plans for an expanded nutritional program and a “giving garden” which will improve the availability of fresh vegetables while providing a healthful, outdoor activity for Food Bank clients. Dignity and service are at the heart of the Food Bank’s mission and Lynn, along with scores of other volunteers, brings a friendly face and a helping hand to the agency’s efforts. Pike Market Medical Clinic • Pike Market Child Care & Preschool • Pike Market Senior Center • Downtown Food Bank 5 $231,000 6 to the Pike Market Medical Clinic to cover the unfunded costs for 10,000 visits by the Clinic’s senior and uninsured patients—almost 40% of all the Clinic’s visits for the coming year. PIKE MARKET MEDICAL CLINIC “ Tricia was the key to my recovery—she saved my life.” Andrew Two years ago Andrew was getting near the end of his rope and what rope he had left was getting pretty thin. Living with Bipolar Disorder he couldn’t hold down a job, had no health care coverage and had been “self medicating” to the point where he developed a chronic drug and alcohol addiction. He lost contact with his family, had given up on himself and his life was spinning out of control. But the door to Tricia Madden’s office was always open and one day Andrew summoned the courage to walk in and ask for help. Tricia works as the Pike Market Medical Clinic’s Homeless Services Program Manager and is a member of the Clinic’s HHOT—Housing Health Outreach Team. The support services provided by her team assisted Andrew in meeting with a Doctor and obtaining both proper medical support and coverage for his prescribed medications. Today, Andrew is on his medications, is clean, sober, doing peer counseling and has reconnected with his family. This year the Pike Market Medical Clinic will field over 25,000 visits from over 4300 low income, homeless and impoverished clients. The Clinic continues to see an increasing trend in the demand for unreimbursed supportive services such as social work and counseling. It would be no exaggeration to say that their patients would not have continued receiving the critical care they needed but for your support of the Market Foundation. When thinking of the Pike Market Medical Clinic its hard not to think of the story of the boy on the beach saving starfish—you know the one where the older man is strolling the beach at low tide and observes a young boy thoughtfully picking up starfish and returning them to the water. The older man asks “what are you doing” and the young boy responds that he is “saving the lives of the starfish.” “Well there are so many do you really think you can make a difference?” said the man. As he placed yet one more starfish in the water the young boy responded “well, it made a difference to that one.” Pike Market Medical Clinic • Pike Market Child Care & Preschool • Pike Market Senior Center • Downtown Food Bank 7 $153,000 8 to the Pike Market Child Care & Preschool—to fund 17 year-long scholarships for children from families who can’t afford the full cost of care. PIKE MARKET CHILD CARE & PRESCHOOL “ We would not be where we are today as a family without the Market Preschool. It is the cornerstone of our lives” Bill, Preschool Parent The reality check came fast and furious when Bill and his partner Michael learned that the adoption process of Nathan (5) and his brother Logan (4) had been approved. Having been raised in foster care, both of their boys were dealing with lots of emotional issues—most prominently, anger and a lack of coping and communication skills. So, finding the right preschool would be paramount. “We visited all the licensed preschools in the downtown Seattle area. Many of them just seemed like places to park kids. When we visited the Pike Market Preschool it took us all of about five minutes to know that this was the place for our boys.” Hugs and laughter go hand in hand with the nurturing, educational environment being offered at the Market Child Care and Preschool. Founded in 1982, the Market’s Preschool was the first program in downtown Seattle to make high quality child care widely accessible to children from families earning a low income. Most child care centers do not serve children receiving a state subsidy because the subsidized reimbursement rate doesn’t come close to covering the costs to provide quality care. Of the 95 families served at the Preschool approximately 70% received tuition assistance. Over half of Preschool families earn less than 50% of the State Median Income. “Coming out of the foster care system our boys had been through so many transitions that they had developed specific behaviors in order to just survive. At the Preschool the boys are developing positive communication skills, building self esteem and are learning how to deal with others more genuinely. We have grown to depend on the preschool as thoughtful caregivers and family partners” Pike Market Medical Clinic • Pike Market Child Care & Preschool • Pike Market Senior Center • Downtown Food Bank 9 $198,465 10 to the Pike Market Senior Center to cover food costs of the breakfast and lunch programs plus the social outreach and engagement activities used by the Center’s 1,700 members for the upcoming year. PIKE MARKET SENIOR CENTER “ It was our team approach which allowed us to successfully and smoothly move Bob into the Sisters of Providence/Heritage House, the crown jewel of the Market Place. We coordinated all the required referrals, assessments and housing applications and all along the way we kept his family members engaged and informed.” Sandra Dunn, Social Services Affectionately known as “No. 1 Bob,” Bob is the Market’s oldest and longest tenured day stall vendor and as such he would get first choice when craft tables were assigned at roll call each morning. A jewelry vendor, #1 Bob has lived and worked in the Market Place community for 40 years. For the past 18 years, Sandra Dunn has brought her expertise and her passion to the Social Services/Resident Advocate Team at the Pike Market Senior Center. When it was time for #1 Bob to move from his senior housing apartment into assisted living Sandra called upon all the needed resources available through the Market’s Senior Center. If it takes a village to raise a child then it surely takes that same village to care for our most vulnerable senior citizens. Located in the heart of Seattle’s Pike Place Market, the Senior Center has provided a warm, safe gathering place for low-income and homeless seniors for over 30 years. Everyday the Pike Market Senior Center serves seniors living in and around downtown Seattle facing the realities of hunger, aging, poverty, poor health and social isolation. The Center is the sole downtown agency that serves this population and remains uniquely positioned through their mission, experience and training to deliver these services. Over the last year, the team at the Senior Center found permanent housing for thirty clients, found jobs for over 80 seniors and served over 40,000 meals to approximately 1,000 unduplicated clients. We regret that, due to space constraints, we are unable to acknowledge the generous contributions of the thousands of individuals who gave amounts ranging from $1 – $99.
