City Report: Freiburg 6 FREIBURG IM BREISGAU known as the sunniest and warmest city of Germany With about 224.000 inhabitants and 28 districts, it is located at the Western south of the Black Forest and at the south-eastern edge of the Upper Rhine Rift. France and Switzerland are just a few miles from it. Know as Green City it counts among the most environmentally friendly and most sustainable cities in the country. And as a university city with altogether 5 colleges it is a place of study for roughly 30.000 young people. The Albert-Ludwigs-Universität together with the university hospital has about 13.000 employees and thus it is the biggest employer of Southern Baden. The historical old town is always worth a visit and attracts numerous tourists and visitors from around the world into the city centre. We have summarized the most important facts about Freiburg for you: HISTORY: The historical Freiburg was mentioned for the first time in a document in 1008 and included the present districts Herdern, Zähringen and Wiehre. The market – and city rights have existed since 1120 and about 80 years later the construction of the Freiburg Minster began, which is one of the main attractions of the city and which marks the contemporary city centre. After 150 years of reign of the Counts of Urach, the citizens of Freiburg ransomed themselves and subjected to the Hapsburg’s rule. The establishment of the university followed 1457. The city was suffering heavily under destruction and siege during the Thirty Years’ War and it was captured by the French in 1677 that resulted in enormous structural changes. After several changes of reigning between France and Austria, Freiburg finally came under the rule of Austria in 1745 and was adopted in the Grand Dutchy of Baden by Napoleon in 1805. This caused the development of a political and economical centre. Because of the enormous growth in the late 19th century several additional districts arose. In 1944 the city centre was almost completely bombed, whereby the minster miraculously was just lightly damaged. Since 1952 Freiburg has been seat of the regional council. 7 City Report: Freiburg Those who want to get more details about the history of the city, are advised to visit the Wentzingerhaus. It is the museum of Freiburg’s history and is situated right to the minster. They are known for hits like Yo soy el son and Llego la Hora, play at the most important festivals and congresses and are regular guests of Salsa Dura. In the end of July, Freiburg can look forward to welcoming Mercadonegro, who are going to kick off the Freiburg Salsa Festival in style. The orchestra now consists of numerous musicians who have made a name for themselves all over the world. However, it was originally founded by 3 musicians and the producer Bibomusic: • Jose Armando Miranda is the lead singer and was born 1974 in La Habana, Kuba. • Cesar Correa is the musical director of the orchestra and was born 1975 in Trujilla Peru. The son of two Peruvian musicians, he has a natural affinity and passion for music. He can play the piano and keyboard like no one else and he is the author of many of the orchestras songs songs. • Rodrigo Rodriguez comes from Cartagenia de Indias, Columbia. He sings, plays the Timbale and is also the composer of several of the orchestra’s hits. Above all one thing joined the four friends: the love to Latin American musics and the emotions associated with their homeland. They all lived in Switzerland, knew the problems of immigration and were determined to bring their music closer to the world , to develop own ideas and the own style and to express their shared life experience musically. The name of the orchestra was chosen deliberately, as a description of Latin American music, involving their several facets. The three musicians achieved great musical successes together with the violinist Alfredo de la Fe and the queen of Salsa, Mrs. Celia Cruz. The group was looking for other gifted musicians in Europe in order to grow the orchestra, to develop the favored sound and to convert the musical ideas. Especially those who understood their views and emotions about Latin American roots and were able to share them. After a period of intensive activity their first CD Bailalo was 25 produced. Dedicated to those who immigrated and left loved ones behind. With the release of the song Mercadonegro the orchestra finally made its breakthrough. Over the coming years several further songs like Pa’l Bailador, Eso me duele and Regrarese were released. The unique style and the high quality of the album Bailalo convinced also many famous and respected DJ’s and so the orchestra rapidly appeared in numerous Latin American music websites in the United States like www.salsaartists.com or www. descarga.com which contributed to increasing popularity of Mercadonegro and which opened a new musical era. The overwhelming success of the band encouraged other Artists of Latin American music to produce and play their music in Europe. Thus, the European salsa scene was influenced partly formed by Mercadonegro. The second album Salsa pa’l mundo has been in now way inferior to the quality of Bailalo. Songs like La Bendicion, La Guarachara de Cuba, Llego la hora, A los Orishas, Jamas, Pa’l Callao, Yo soy el son and El Negro placed themselves immediately in the upper positions of the charts. To remember the founding of the band, the album covers resembles a noble Swiss watch, because here the foundation for the band was laid. Today Mercandonegro is known around the world. They are part of the most popular Latin American music groups and play on the most well-known congresses and festivals. For example, on the Rotterdam Carnival in Holland, the Red Sea Festival in Israel or on the Umbria Jazz in Perugia. Their performances are always something special. The unique sound is infectious and it inspired absolutely every dancer. Thema 26 Werbung Hochzeitsbilder Werbung Tammam SOS 27 Musik DJ MAMBITO (GERMANY) Due to his wide range of music DJ Mambito (Freiburg, GER) is fancied by dancers and promoters alike. He works in clubs, on festivals and is resident DJ of the Berlin Salsacongress since 2001. CD TIPS Kizomba / Bachata Tip: 28 Artist: G-AMADO CD: NHAS LETRAS R‘n‘B, Hip Hop, Zouk and Kizomba are the genres of G-Amado. None other than Mika Mendes supported G-Amado on his debut-CD. In my humble opinion ‘Alguen Ku un Gosta‘ is the best track of this release, but the duet with Shana is will also take you on a musical journey. Band introduction: MARLOW ROSADO Studying liner notes on a regular basis, the name of Marlow Rosado will be detected on CDs of Puerto Rican Power, Mario Ortiz, Charlie Cruz, Elvis Crespo, Andy Montañez, Tito Rojas and many more. As a successful producer and composer he was awarded with platin for Ricky Martin‘s ‘Musica+Alma+Sexo‘ and has been nominated for the Grammy Award eleven times so far. He takes up the challenge of rearranging 70s Fania classics adding his personal sound. Countless times Fania classics have been interpreted but rarely has this been carried out so brilliantly. Marlow‘s work has been rewarded by the presence of several original Stars of the Fania 70s. A perfect example is the song ‘Nací Moreno‘ celebrating Marlow Rosado‘s retro style with guests like Papo Lucca and Luigi Texidor. The original Fender Rhodes and the tough horn sections zest the latest release ‘Retro‘. Marlow Rosado - Retro A pre-eminent interpretation and a rendered homage of salsa classics including artists of Fania‘s heyday. Cheo Feliciano & Rubén Blades Eba Say Ajá Two doyen of salsa enriched with vibraphon strictly for for the dance floor. DJ EL CHINO (COLUMBIA) Music producer, promoter, cultural manager, journalist and DJ - he is a real allrounder. DJ el Chino‘s Solar Latin Club is a predominant source for latin music. Additionally he is columnist on the Puertorican website ‘Herencia Latina‘ and official compilator of the ‘Salsa World Series‘. Furthermore he is collaborator of the section Top 20 Hit Parade at the “Latin Beat Magazine“ from California. DJ EL CHINO’S PLAYLIST 1. Baile de Amor - Rick Davies 2.
