From the Headmaster Crusader Notes BISHOP EUSTACE PREPARATORY SCHOOL Spring is here and I know you are all enjoying the warmer weather! Although I love seeing the flowers bloom and the weather warming up, it reminds me that our Seniors will soon be leaving us. The excitement in the air as the college and university acceptances are celebrated is overshadowed by the fact that they will be graduating very soon. I wish them well but I will miss them. On the other hand, I look forward to the Class of 2018 coming in September! Class Representative elections in mid-May will determine the future leaders of our student body. We will all be praying for good weather as our annual Alumni/Parent Scholarship Golf tournament takes place on 19 May 2014. Please support this event, as all proceeds go directly to our financial aid program. I hope to see many of you there! Toward the end of May, our Senior Promenade will be held on campus and the much anticipated Senior Prom will be held at The Collingswood Ballroom. What a beautiful sight as our students dress in gowns and tuxedos, looking very elegant! A Liturgy to celebrate my 25th Jubilee was held Friday, May 2. I want to thank everyone for their good wishes. This milestone in my religious life was celebrated with my family, friends, and the entire community of Bishop Next come the awards ceremonies, Senior Picnic, Eustace; I am so grateful for their kind words and and the Class of 2014 farewell. For example: Biology books must be returned no later than the day of your biology exam. Late returns will be subject to a minimum fine of $5.00 per book. Students are responsible for the cost of any lost or damaged state textbook. If you lost a state textbook, please see Mrs. Larson immediately. STUDENT PERSONNEL SERVICES NEWS CONGRATULATIONS GRADUATES SPS would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Class of 2014 for a very successful year. We have enjoyed working with all of our students. Our seniors will be missed as they move on to college. We are proud of them and look forward to hearing of their many achievements in the future. Thank you for the opportunity to be a part of this exciting time in the life of your family. AP Testing AP Testing began May 5 and will conclude May 15. This year we have 171 students taking 299 exams. Congratulations to all students who are completing their AP tests. SAT PREP Bishop Eustace will offer Summer SAT Prep in conjunction with Kaplan Test Prep. Yellow Flyers are available in SPS. The program will run on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from June 17 to July 24. Cost of the program will be $599 if you register by May 31st and $699 if you register in June. Please see Mrs. Spilker in SPS for more information. LULLI LIBRARY NEWS The last due date of the school year for all students is Friday, May 16. All books and any accrued fines need to be resolved by that day. If it is necessary for students to hold onto books for a paper or assignment after that time, please have them see Mrs. Croce as soon as possible. Members of the Student Library Association will hold a Farewell Snack for SLA seniors after school in the Faculty Dining Hall on May 16. SLA seniors should RSVP and also let us know what college or university they will attend. We are also asking for a 2 x 3 photo. If your senior is in SLA, please remind them to do all of the above as soon as possible. The winners of the SLA-hosted Black & White Paper Airplane Competition were Sean Loftus ’14, Praveen Vulimiri ’15, and Tim Lojak ’16. They received a Grand Candy Cake made by two SLA members. Thanks to all members of this committee for their work. Page 2 C R U S AD E R NOT E S School News SPRING CONCERT REMINDER Our annual Spring Concert will be held at the Collingswood Theater on Wednesday, May 14 at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free and all are welcome to come and enjoy the performance! ALL STATE CHORUS Over 1200 students auditioned for All State Chorus. Congratulations to Breanne Falese ’17 and Chelsea Reyes ’15 for being accepted into the All State Mixed Chorus. A special congratulations to Breanne, who scored 5th best of all Soprano 1 students in the state. Thank You for your continued support of the Performing Arts Department. BLACK AND WHITE WEEK 2014 As a bookend to Spirit Week in the fall, Student Council sponsored Black and White Week from April 28 to May 1, with many returning fun activities plus a new event. Monday saw Eustace Quizzo at the four lunch periods, as teams answered Eustace trivia to win the coveted “big cookie” prizes. Monday afternoon was the annual Student-Faculty Badminton Contest, with Mr. David Moffa and Gina D’Antonio ’16 as the winners. Tuesday was the “Find the Crusader” contest, won by the freshman class who found 42 Crusaders. After school on Tuesday was our first Paper Airplane Contest, with challenges in appearance, flight distance, and accuracy. Winners included Sean Loftus ’14, Praveen Vulimiri ’15, and Tim Lojak ’16, with special mention to Matt Lewis ’16. The heavy rains on Wednesday and resulting wet fields on Thursday unfortunately caused the school picnic, carnival, Mr. Eustace contest, and Powder Puff football game to be postponed. Black and White Week Part II will take place on May 15. At 1:00, we will have the school picnic and carnival. At 5:30 p.m. we will have our Powder Puff game. At 7:00, we will hold the Mr. Bishop Eustace contest in the field house. Admission for the event is $5. Thank you to everyone who helped make these events a success, including the faculty who helped run the events, the parents who donated prizes for the carnival, and the students who participated. STUDENT COUNCIL CORNER Congratulations to our newly elected senators for 2014-15: Senior Class Senators: Anthony Biello and Ashley Monahan Junior Class Senators: Erin Feeney and Emily Hunter Sophomore Class Senators: Christopher Krawiec and Alexis Mignogna C R U S AD E R NOT E S Page 3 Winter Sports Recap BOYS BASKETBALL The team continued the winning tradition with another 20 win season. Hard work and team play led this team to a 20 -9 record. On the way, the team won the Olympic Conference National Division Championship. This included 2 wins over #1 ranked PVI and a win at Camden Catholic. The team also was runner-up in the KSA National Holiday Tournament in Orlando, Florida, and had the opportunity to play at Disney World’s Wide World of Sports. The season ended in the South Jersey Semifinal to defending state champions St. Joseph’s. Senior Flo DaSilva was selected to participate in the Senior All-Star Game and was also named to the All-South Jersey Basketball Team by the Albert J. Carino Boys Basketball Club of South Jersey. The future looks very bright as they started four underclassmen in their lineup. They participated in the Paul VI Holiday Classic and next year they are looking to add their own Showcase tournament to their schedule All-Conference: 1st Team: Alexis Santarelli 2nd Team: Elizabeth Radley Special Awards: Sportsmanship Award: Natalie Alleva Coaches Award: Uju Obianwu Coaches Award: Darby O’Kane Coaches Award: Ali Lynch BOYS BOWLING The team came off of last season with lots of young potential to grow the program, and they did just that. The boys won the Freedom Division Title in the Olympic Conference and finished with a strong 42-14 record. They even had a stronger record this year than last. The team hopes to come out strong next season. All-Conference: 1st Team: Brittany Eachus, Caitlyn Sorelle, and Chelsea Stratton 2nd Team: Deanna Miceli Special Awards: Sportsmanship Award: Deanna Miceli Most Improved: Brittany Eachus Coaches Award: Victoria Haines MVP: Chelsea Stratton CHEERLEADING The team competed in the program's first "all music" routine for the first time at Jamfest Nationals in Maryland in early December and came out with a 2nd place finish. In January, they attended Heavy Hitters competition at the Sun National Bank Arena in Trenton, NJ, placing 1st in their division and achieving the 2nd overall high score for the morning session with over 25 teams, and even outscored a college team. Their last competition, to round out the winter season, kept them locally at Lenape High school, where they placed 1st in the High School All Music Division and also received the Grand Champion Award for the highest overall score of the day, beating over ten high school teams from the Tri-State area. However, they had one of the strongest seasons in some time. They qualified for the state championships and captured their conference title. They placed 4th overall at the South Jersey Invitational. Senior Mary Kate Davis won the 500 Free. In the State Individual Championships senior Diver Grace Solipaca placed 9th overall and Mary Kate Davis placed 14th in the 200 free and 7th in the 500 free events. The team placed 2nd at the state non-public B Relay Championships as well as the State Individual Championships. With a core of underclassmen, they made a mark in the state relays where both the Shuttle Hurdles Team and Shot Put squads place 2nd. The distance squad had an impressive 2nd place finish in the Distance Medley and they won the 4 x 800 relay with Ben Tso, Shawn Hutchinson, Anthony Morelli, and Praveen Vulimiri. At the state individual championships, the team was led by Shawn Hutchinson and Anthony Morelli who finished 1st and 2nd in the 3200 and Evan Adams who won the state championship in the High Jump. In addition, Shawn Hutchinson qualified for Nationals in the 2 mile and broke the school record in the event. Three teams place 5th at the state meet including: High jump (Gina Bischof and Katherine Damato), 4x55 hurdles team (Gina Bischof, Christen Biche, Michelle Carrie, and Alyssa Pernini), and the 4x2 Team (Gina Bischof, Christen Biche, Michelle Carrie, and Katherine Damato). The girls from the 4x2 placed 6th at the state meet for their performance in the 4x4 (Gina Bischof, Christen Biche, Michelle Carrie, and Katherine Damato). The girls had a few Meet of Champions Qualifiers including Gina Bishof (high jump) and the 4x4 team (Gina Bischof, Christen Biche, Michelle Carrie, and Katherine Damato). Special Awards: Sportsmanship Award: Lisa Jordan Most Improved: Caitlin Reyes Coaches Award: Katherine Damato MVP: Gina Bischof ICE HOCKEY The team had a rebuilding year but they still had many exciting and competitive games. In fact, they played many close games with some of the top ranked squads in the state. They compete in the highly competitive Gordon Conference, which features the best NJ high school ice hockey programs. During the season they defeated local rival Gloucester Catholic in two out of three meetings. The team participated in both the conference playoffs and qualified for the eleventh consecutive season for the state playoffs. During playoff action the team beat Holy Spirit in the first round. Individually Senior, 160 pound captain, Zach Pharo and junior 170 pound captain Nick Guiliano each earned 21 and 20 individual wins this season. Zach also won a 3rd place medal at the Nottingham Tournament. Freshman Mike Fisher, at 103 pounds, along with Zach Pharo each earned a 4th place finish at the District 27 tournament. The team looks forward to an improved squad next year with many returning wresters.
