F or many of us, the Pride Festival is a high holy day. What we celebrate today is what we try to live out all the time: pride in ourselves, pride in our lives, and pride in our community. That’s what our theme is about this year: celebrating our lives and our PRIDE -- 365 days a year. PRIDE 365 has special meaning to Liz Edman those of us who are part of Hudson Pride Connections Center. While the Festival is the most visible part of what we do, we also work hard to provide services and support to our entire community, 365 days a year. Hudson Pride is a HOME for our community. When our youth need a safe space or a friendly face, we’re it. When our seniors need to get out and feel the bond of family, we’re the destination. Hudson Pride is a VOICE for our community. When media want an LGBT perspective, we are the first call they make. Our PRIDE GUIDE features businesses that have supported our festival and our Center, and I encourage you to support them right back! This year’s Guide also gives you a great read on what is going on at the Center. Take a look, and if you are moved by what you read, get involved! The Center welcomes your ideas, your fabulous energy, and your presence, every day of the year. Happy Pride – today, and every day!! Carmen Hernandez 29 Teen Help Youth Suicide and Bullying: A Response O ver the coming year, Hudson Pride will mount a series of events to lift up the interrelated issues of bullying and youth suicide. We will examine New Jersey’s Antibullying law and its impact on our youth in Jersey City and Hudson County schools. We will also mount a major exhibition that will tell the stories of boys, girls and transgender youths who have killed themselves in recent years. 30 Some of the suicides have gained widespread notoriety but many have gone virtually unnoticed. Hudson Pride is planning to commemorate as many youths as possible, through a series consisting of a commemorative art exhibition, a memorial rite, public policy discussions and collaborations with local school boards and other service agencies. Our objective is not only to raise awareness and stir-up a response, but to mourn the tragic loss of actual irreplaceable young lives. Help is needed to create these events. Your energy and ideas are welcome. If you are interested in being part of this important effort, please email liz@hudsonpride.org. 31 Why Pride 365? By Renata Moreira D o you have any friends who just don’t get why our (LGBTQ) people still need Pride celebrations in 2012? “Didn’t Obama come out in support of same-sex marriage?” Some have asked me, as if all institutional discrimination would simply vanish after his statement. “Even Clint Eastwood said he doesn’t give a f--- about who wants to marry who, for god’s sake!” Hmmm... I generally take a deep breath and, with as much compassion as I can muster, share heartfelt stories of visibility, love, community, and empowerment, as well as very real tales of rejection, exclusion, and oppression that our LGBTQ identified youth, seniors, couples, families and friends still experience in the 21st century great U.S. of A. Most seem sincerely shocked to see how uninformed they are. Some downplay our reasons as “It’s a lot better now than it used to be… It’s just a matter of time… It’ll be different once baby boomers die off.” Do they expect us to stand by quietly, as Every Thursday 32 second class citizens, waiting for history to unfold? Even worse, a few still question the need to continuously organize ways to affirm our dignity and increase awareness our very real concerns. For the skeptical ones out there, here are a few less than festive reasons why the show must go on 365 days a year, 24 hours a day: • Only 16 states in the nation ban discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. • LGBTQ youth are 2-3 times more likely to commit suicide (and comprise between 20-40% of the homeless population). SAGE is a social networking group that provides workshops, day trips, outdoor activities and much more for 40+ GLBTQ We meet: Wednesdays, 6:00-7:00 P.M. SAGE at Hudson County also provides access to important resources and referrals regarding: health care, social services, and community activities for all the 40+ GLBTQ participants. 33 • It is completely legal to fire someone because they are LGB in 29 states (34 if you are Trans)! • There are only 6 states (and DC) where same-sex marriage is legal, yet 30 that restrict marriage to one man and one woman through state constitution and 11 that restrict marriage by state law. • Committed same-sex couples are denied 1,138 federal benefits available to opposite-sex couples under the so-called “Defense of Marriage Act.” • Hate crimes against LGBTQ people comprised over 16% of all hate crimes last year alone. • One out of every three same sex female couples are raising children (1/5 male couples), but second parent adoption is only legal in 18 states and DC. Yes, it is great to see the President finally coming out in support of samesex couples, but the reality is that many of us across the country still get kicked out of our homes, fired from jobs, denied pension and visitation rights, excluded from health benefits, and so on… simply for being lesbian, gay, bi, trans, or queer identified. Pride, then, is needed so we can transcend our collective pain to embrace who we are and to empower other LG- Health & Wellness Education Series Presented by Edward Ramos, Health & Wellness Coach, Nutritional Consultant Topics include: • Eatinghealthyontherun • Nutrition&diseasemanagement • Understandingproductlabels • Goodfoods&superfoods • Bloodsugardiseases • Enzymes&digestion Every 1st & 3rd Thursday of the month. 6:00 P.M. 32 Jones Street, Jersey City, NJ 07306 (201) 963-4779 www.hudsonpride.org 34 Everyoneiswelcome! BTQ people to do the same. Most of our friends see a day of fabulous parades, performances, rallies, and parties, but Pride is much more than that. It’s about building community across and beyond the rainbow at every opportunity, all year long. About calling on businesses, service providers, neighbors, teachers, and clergy to fully support LGBTQ people, no matter where we live. It’s about demanding a comprehensive response from our elected leaders to ensure that all of us are granted fundamental freedoms, rights, and protections to be able to care for each other and our families. Ultimately, LGBTQ pride is about healing our communities, love for self & others, and securing social justice for all. So next time friends ask you “Why pride?” again, I hope you, too, will take a deep breath and engage them in an authentic conversation that is bound to touch their hearts and help create a more inclusive world for LGBTQ people and allies. Renata Moreira is the Policy Director of Our Family Coalition, a California based NGO working to promote the equality and well-being of LGBTQ-headed families through educational, advocacy, and policy initiatives. www.ourfamily.org 35 Thank You Volunteers: T his year’s Pride festival would not have been possible without the tremendous help and support from many individuals. We are truly humbled by the outpour of unselfish support, encouragement and time donated by an amazing team of dedicated volunteers. By Jon Lucas P LGBTI Community Groups. In May of 2001 Paul and Miguel posted fliers all over Jersey City calling for all LGBTI’s to join them to meet and form a community group. Out of these meetings came “Jersey City Lesbian and Gay Outreach” later to be called JCLGO for short. Reprinted from the 2004 Jersey City Pride Guide One of the greatest contributions that came out of Paul and Miguel’s initial concept to form JCLGO was the tradition to have an annual pride festival in Jersey City every year. To this day, it is still important and necessary for all of us to come together from time to time to celebrate our differences and commonalities, build a community in the face of adversity, and to continue to make strides towards issues that are important to our community. It is for this tradition that we thank the founding members and on-going volunteers of JCLGO for establishing a wonderful tradition. artners Napoleon Paul Mendoza and Miguel Cardenas co-founded Jersey City Lesbian & Gay Outreach in May 0f 2001. They moved to Jersey City in 1997 because of the closeness to NYC and the reasonable rent at the time. For the first three years they were not part of any community in Jersey City instead they always looked to NYC to satisfy their social needs and interactions with in the LGBT community. As the years went by, they noticed there was a fast growing population of Queer folks moving into Jersey City, but no real sense of community. That is when Paul started to investigate just what groups were available for LGBTI individuals in New Jersey because it was obvious a LGBTI identity was needed in Jersey City. To his surprise, the support and encouragement for a Pride Festival was there from both the residents of Jersey City and from other 2012 Stage Design 38 RESOURCE DIRECTORY ADVOCACY American Civil Liberties Union of NJ (ACLU ) Post Office Box 32159 Newark, NJ 07102 Phone: 973.642.2084 Email: info@aclu-nj.org www.aclu-nj.org GABLES of Cape May County PO Box 641 Cape May Court House, NJ 08210 Phone: 609.861.1848 gables00@email.com www.gablescapemay.com Gay Activist Alliance in Morris County (GAAMC) PO Box 137 Convent Station, NJ 07961 Phone: 973.285.1595 Email: info@gaamc.org www.gaamc.org GPBN Gay Pride Business Network Website: www.gpbn.org National Organization for Woman of NJ (NOW-NJ) 110 West State Street Trenton, NJ 08608 Phone: 609.393.0156 now-nj@nownj.org www.nownj.org The Our Youth Center St. John’s Church 155 North Street Jersey City NJ 07307 Phone: 210.839.5869 Ouryouth2006@yahoo.com Myspace.com/our_ youth Planned Parenthood of NJ P.O.
