Within the last year the process has been named I-Brite. To many, making the eyes whiter may simply seem like a cosmetic procedure. The opposite could not be more true. Unbeknownst to those without the condition, people who live for many years with discolored whites of the eyes have the emotional effect of a more traditional ‘disfigurement’, such as missing Before I-BRITE Eye Whitening. a limb. At the American Academy of Ophthalmology in San Francisco in October, I was warm! The weather there is often opposite to what you’d expect in that city. Mark Twain once remarked, “The coldest Winter I ever spent was the Summer in San Francisco!” At this conference, I presented research on C3-R (transepithelial collagen crosslinking) for Keratoconus. Specifically, we reported safety data. We have never had any adverse side effects aside from temporary scratchiness. Re-treatment data was also presented after 4 years which found that only 1% of patients required a second C3-R treatment which is the same retreatment rate as the more invasive epi-off crosslinking technique. All of our presentations are now posted on our site www.keratoconusinserts.com/research. For those who wish to learn more about reasons the epithelium does not need to be removed, please see www.keratoconusinserts.com/crosslinking. I-Brite™ Eye Whitening was featured on Dr. Phil’s The Doctors and CBS News—both news segements can now be viewed by searching the term I-Brite on www.YouTube.com. I-Brite was also covered by a number of other shows and news stations which will air shortly. In the radio world, Dr. Bruce Hensel kindly invited me to be on his radio show to speak about LASIK vision correction. The Mancow Radio show interviewed me about a variety of topics: Steve Holcomb's story about Keratoconus and the upcoming Olympics, LASIK, and restoring vision to those who are blind; we were also supposed to talk about stem cells for macular degeneration but ran out of time. The next newsletter will give you an update about this promising stem cell research for macular degeneration which is just starting in the United States. I was really touched when a colleague of mine dedicated his new book Color Atlas of Ophthalmology to me. I really don’t think of myself as being of the type (or of the age) to have such things dedicated on my behalf, but it gave me pause to realize that my work and research over my career thus far has had some effect on others.
