WATER CONSERVATION STRATEGIES
Vortex has developed several water conservation strategies to be used in conjunction with our
Splashpad® solutions:
Recirculation
Between 150 to 400 GPM (570 to 1515 LPM)
Recirculation occurs when the water used in a
Splashpad® is contained within a closed system,
filtered for debris, and then chemically treated to
prevent algae and bacteria proliferation before being
used again in the Splashpad®.
This solution is generally used with large high flow
Splashpads®. These types of Splashpads® are usually
referred to as Destination Splashpads® within a park,
a resort, or a commercial site where people are
entertained with big water features.

Recirculation requires an extensive initial capital
investment for the water quality management system
(WQMS) and the basic infrastructure which includes a
holding tank for the Splashpad®.
Trained staff from an Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO)
may be required for these types of facilities in
order to test and verify water quality and chemical
treatment process.

Smart Flow
Between 40 to 200 GPM (150 to 760 LPM)
Vortex has developed its Smart Flow System to
optimize the water consumption in a Splashpad®.
With the Smart Flow System the water is supplied
to the play features and then drained away to a
wastewater or sanitary system in a single pass.
Combining these nozzles with operating sequences
programmed for all the play features, could reduce
the total GPM by 30% to 50%.
Water conservation and optimization is derived from
Vortex designed reduced-consumption nozzles, which
can decrease water consumption up to 40-50%.
Implementing a Smart Flow System can allow you to
decrease an original 400 GPM (1515 LPM) Splashpad®
design layout down to a 200 GPM (760 LPM) flow
consumption.
Smartpoint
Between 25 to 40 GPM (95 to 150 LPM),
*up to 72 GPM (270 LPM) with 2” 50mm water line
Micro consumption installations are equipped with
the Smartpoint Command Center and operate within
25-40 gallons per minute range*. This represents only
10% of the High Flow scenario and a mere 20% of the
Smart Flow water conservation strategy.
Vortex is also developing new ideas to operate small
Splashpads® solutions with water consumption as low
as 72 GPM (270 LPM) for resort or hotel settings.
A Splashpad® reaching a higher level of micro
consumption can be coupled with a recirculation
scenario and/or with additional LEED practices or
principles. For example, hook up to a holding tank,
or to a rooftop water collection system and repurpose
for roof garden drip irrigation.
