Kick-start for a tolerant society

HUNDREDS braved the
recent cold weather to join
in the festivities to promote
multicultural societies
during Celebrate Durban
month.
Communities from wards
26, 27, 30, 31, 32 and 33
gathered at the Albert Park
Hall for a multicultural
family fun day.
The event, organised by
the Municipality and a team
from Gedley’hlekisa zone,
was aimed at encouraging
unity in diversity and to
instill pride and national
identity in citizens.
Calls for an end to
xenophobia were made.
The Speaker of the
KwaZulu-Natal Legislature,
Prof Willies Mchunu, in his
capacity as a Ward 33
member, said: “Our city is
known for harnessing
diversity and it is our
obligation as citizens to
ensure we encourage
tolerance within a diverse
society.”
Ward 31 Councillor, Gloria
Borman, said: “We don’t
have to change each other,
but must continue to
support one another, and
thus harness each other.”
Councillor Mpume
Chamane praised the
communities for joining
hands with the City to
promote multicultural
societies.
“This is indicative of our
commitment and efforts to
shape the future of our city
as caring citizens with a
common goal.
“This, and other similar
events, are a crucial vehicle
for promoting and

The yearly “Comrades of
cycling”, as it is known in
cycling circles starts from
Pietermaritzburg, and finishes at Durban’s Suncoast
Casino.
The race, which enjoys the
support of the Municipality,
follows the same route as the
Comrades Marathon, meaning the cyclists will have to
