What’s all this about, then?
our company, mum, The Entertainment Factory, who we are, what we do, y‘know.

professional design software?! um...designing stuff, mum - look, some of it moves on screen!
bunch of Apple Macs?! creatin’, drawin’ ‘n’ writin’ stuff, mostly, mum.
This sounds very expensive...
It doesn’t have to be! We specialize in creating products with high production value at low cost.
We collaborate with a range of talented creative individuals and companies who are always
willing to join with us on new projects, either becoming co-producers/partners in the project or
offering us reduced rates, as we do for them on their projects – it’s all about sharing the love, mum,
just like you always say.
Plus, we have most of our own equipment, so we can cut down on rentals and .

Who do you make this stuff for?
Everybody, mum - in our diverse and amazing country, there’s a story on every corner, and the
stories we tell are universal, ones that anybody could identify with, because they draw upon our collective
humanity, our commonalities (or perhaps better stated - our common insanities or inanities, since
we love comedy above all other genres!).
In whatever we do – movies, TV shows, advertainment, corporate or industrial videos – this is the
core principle that we strive towards.
How do you do that?
We make it a priority to see the story in everything, mum, the heart, the people. Then we wrap
every important detail inside that story, & we make sure that, however it’s told - in words, in
pictures, in ideas - it jumps inside your head and it stays there.
please note - p. 32
I hope you’re remembering to eat right while you’re doing all of this.
That’s not a question, mum. How else could we have the energy to do all of this? Er...yes, mum,
three squares a day, mum. Yes, spinach too.

introduction
iN BuLLet PoiNts
The Entertainment Factory...
was founded & is directed by filmmakers/writers/creatives Robert Delport & Anusha Naicker
both incredibly brilliant, talented, versatile & modest individuals (see next page)
is a digital production company with a focus on strong content, innovative concepts and creative ideas
we put the utmost care & effort into every project we undertake
is based in Cape Town, South Africa
Africa, Earth (blue planet 3 away from Sol), Solar System (± 4.37 light years from Alpha Centauri), Milky Way
Galaxy, Multiverse (Univ. ID: TEF)
holds the highest respect for the craft, the work, the sensitivity and the integrity that is prerequisite to
storytelling in all forms – and believes that a continuing commitment to education, self-empowerment and
skills diversification allows it to maintain the high skill level to meet those prerequisites.
is always cognizant of the power of entertainment, its role in enriching our diverse social landscape and the
responsibility of the artist to educate, illuminate and spark debate
In that vein, we have produced material for many clients at reduced rates when the project or message of the
piece is of merit. Examples include non-profit organizations (e.g. Reach For A Dream–stills shoot, The Animal
Anti-Cruelty League–storyboard & illustration work); the government (e.g. covering the 16 Days of Activism
campaign for The Department of Justice & Constitutional Development); & pro bono work for many talented
individuals (e.g. several musicians, actors, comedians, writers, filmmakers and photographers) who are unable
to afford the essential tools (e.g. show reels, script work-shopping, marketing materials, technical help,
equipment loans, elements of post-production) needed in the extremely competitive entertainment industry.

introduction
About Rob:
About Nush:
Robert began his 23-year
old career in 1987 as a
precocious 13-year old
starring in the Christmas
panto Robin Hood and the Babes In The Wood.
R
lport
obert De
Anusha is a New Yorktrained filmmaker who cut
her teeth on non-crystal
sync Arri-S 16mm cameras
and Steinbeck editing tables at the tender age of 16.
Having literally grown up avidly studying both the old
school and new school of the art and craft of making
moving pictures gives her a unique approach to every
project, applying the classic traditions of storytelling,
cinematography and visual design in conjunction with
modern technologies and techniques.
More stage productions than he can remember
followed, before he decided, at the wise old age of
18, to write and direct his first professional stage
show (Alice in Boogie Wonderland at the Artscape) –
further entrenching the budding megalomaniac’s
passion for the arts.
Rob began writing and editing for a number of local production
companies, and was one of the first in South Africa to begin using Final
Cut Pro (vers. 1.0) in the ‘90’s while directing and editing inserts for the
RWC TV channel in 1995.
He began to produce and edit music videos for a number of local
artists, was involved in a number of independent movie and TV
projects (many with Hakeem Kae-Kazim and Eubulus Timothy) at
around the same time.
The Sum Of His Parts, her stop-motion animated short film, was
recently featured in the 2010 Out Of The Box: Moving Things Festival.
As if there isn’t enough for her to do, she is currently writing her first
novel, The Mayzson (working title).
It was not long before he was producing his own feature-length movie:
A Bloody Stage, a mockumentary shot with no budget and starring 40
of South Africa’s top actors and even a Springbok rugby star. Robert
also wrote, directed, was a 1-man crew, and edited the movie.
She’s also a dab hand at applying her slightly manic imagination to her
WACOM digital tablet and stylus and is a general know-it-all and
smart-mouth.
Not long after, Robert met his creative- and life-partner, Anusha, and
the two teamed up to form their own production company – and The
Entertainment Factory in its present incarnation was born.

a Naic
ker
Her colourful ride through Zen and the Art of
Filmmaking led her to a myriad of jobs that typify the maverick nature
of the young, up-and-coming SA filmmaker: From gaffing and gripping
on commercials sets (not the most enjoyable endeavour for a short,
slight female with the upper-arm strength of a fruit-fly) to storyboarding
(most notably, the 2003 ICC Cricket World Cup Opening Ceremony,
most humorously, the 2006 Cialis 72-hr effective ED pill commercials)
to writing, directing, cinematography, editing, digital design and
animation, her skills are very diverse. DOP credits include a plethora of
student and indie movies, several music videos, short films, multimedia
projects and dozens of corporate and research videos.
He went on to appear in over 100 productions,
directed more than 20, and has had 15 of his scripts staged. Being a
movie geek of the highest order (and sporting a savant-like memory for
all facts celluloid), it was only a matter of time before the film industry
lit up on his radar.
<<
Anush
While working as a camera op on a behind-the-scenes doccie on
Sithengi 2003, Nush met Rob (also working a cam on the doccie) and
found the flip side of her coin – also, he had a Final Cut Pro-based edit
suite to match her Sony PD-150!

These services encompass:
While post-production may seem purely technical in nature, it is in fact a multi-faceted endeavour
that requires far more of the editor than a competent knowledge of the software.
Post-production workflows at The Entertainment Factory are run and executed by editors who possess:
•
a profound sense of narrative structure - story is all-important;
•
the ability to gauge cinematography and performance with a discerning eye;
•
the ability to identify and stay true to the heart-line – the emotional subtext that underpins every
project and gives it its value;
•
the savvy to use the psychological and emotional connotations of composition, rhythm, colour,
lighting and sound to effectively communicate the desired message/emotion to the audience;
•
The skill and experience necessary to obtain good pacing, a properly executed mise en scène
and thematic continuity.
It is our belief that these skills are as necessary to a well-edited timeline as an in-depth knowledge of
the tools that achieve these ends.

EADING FROM THE COMPUTER SCREEN, SHE ENUNCIATES CAREFULLY:
“THE JOY OF THE WRITTEN WORD IS ONE THAT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO DESCRIBE VERBALLY - MAINLY, WE BELIEVE, BECAUSE IT IS AN IMPOSSIBLE
PHENOMENON TO DESCRIBE ADEQUATELY WHILE NOT SIMULTANEOUSLY EXPERIENCING IT.”
“WHO SAID THAT?” ASKS HE.
“I DID,” SAYS SHE.
“RIGHT, BUT WHO DID FIRST?”
“I DID,” SAYS SHE, AGAIN.
“AW. WOULD’VE BEEN GOOD IF SOMEBODY WROTE IT.”
“I DID,” SAYS SHE, GROWING IRRITATED, “JUST NOW.”
“TRY FIND SOMETHING BY TWAIN, PEOPLE LIKE TWAIN.”
SHE GLARES AT HIS BACK, THEN LOOKS BACK AT THE SCREEN. A FEW ONOMATOPOEIC-C-C-CLICKS LATER:
“‘MAN IS THE ONLY ANIMAL THAT BLUSHES, OR HAS NEED TO.’ - MARK TWAIN”
HE TURNS, WREATHED IN TENDRILS OF SMOKE AND THE SUSPICION OF DOG HAIR, AND SAYS, “NOT REALLY RIGHT FOR AN INSIDER’S GUIDE TO
T.E.F., THOUGH, IS IT?”
SHE GRUMBLES, “I’D SAY ABOUT HALF-RIGHT.”
THE SEARCH FIELD ON-SCREEN METHODICALLY FILLS WITH THE WORDS: ‘AMBROSE BIERCE’.

ILLUSTRATION: A picture really does paint a thousand words – whether it’s a specific
communication tool like a storyboard or poster, part of a larger ideation process, like concept art or a
textbook diagram, a narrative medium like a comic, caricature or storybook illustration, or a decorative
illustration that speaks to your soul.
The Entertainment Factory practices many forms of traditional and contemporary illustrative styles and
techniques in a diverse array of media.
ANIMATION:
The word, ‘animation’ literally means bring to life. It is a medium wherein each and
every element represents a definable act of creation. The effort involved in creating any kind of animation is
painstaking and time-consuming, but it is well worth it when you end up with a dream made real, your
imagination manifested and playing before your eyes.
The Entertainment Factory currently offers basic 2D and 3D computer animation, animatic sequences (moving
storyboards), stop-motion animation (traditional, paper, mixed media, claymation), as well as (and in
conjunction with) animated text and object sequences (i.e. motion graphics - see post-production)
