C L U B FU TUR E S S Q UA D C HR O N I C LE NOVEMBER 2015 Sizzling Summer and Frenzied Fall at MLTC!!!!! Every Chronicle it just gets better!!! Summer 2015 and Autumn 2015 has produced the best set of performances recorded by the Club Futures Squad players across the age groups. We have dominated at tournaments, representing Berkshire in inter county events and then our Juniors dominated at the MLTC Club Tournament and National AEGON League. I will attempt to list the achievements seen by our players and Squads: during the past 6 months:· Boys 12&U won National Aegon Div 2 South West (Gregor Webster, James Okonkwo, Elkan Dillon, Alex Okonkwo, Josh Hills) · Lewis Brown, George Hedley, Oliver Okonkwo and Holly Russell all represented MLTC in the Mens / Ladies AEGON National Division 1 · George Hedley and Chloe Lant left to studya nd paly tennis in USA on Tennis Scholarships · Oliver Okonkwo and Holly Russell dominate Senior MLTC Club Finals. Both Mens and Ladies Singles Champions · Gregor Webster and Alex Okonkwo have been invited to a National 12&U Camp at the National Training Centre. · Shreya Walia has attended the Girls 10&U National Talent ID Day · Shreya Walia, Eva Lancaster, Amber Knight,(Gilrs 10&U); Steffi Swanson, Lily Doherty, Dina Kamel & Lizzy Burrows (Girls 9&U) are attending LTA Winter Regional Camps and are being accepted and competing at the Winter National Grade 2 events · Gregor Webster was invited to guest for Croatia in an International Match during Summer 2015 · Oliver Okonkwo reached the Winter National Tour 16&U for the first time. · Jemma Lancaster and Gregor Webster were awarded the Manning Davenport Awards by Berkshire LTA during 2015 · 24 Reception and Year 1 school children were invited to join Project Red Squads in Summer 2015. · The following players represented Berkshire in LTA County Cup:- Jemma Lancaster;Gregor Webster;James Okonkwo; Elkan Dillon;Phoebe Fox; Xanthe Ashe; Eva Lancaster; Alex Okonkwo; Jack Graham; Arda Dramali; Booby Pocock; Dina Lipovski; Sarah Vickers; Lizzy Burrows; Steffi Swanson; Holly Russell. · The following palyers represented Berkshire at the Lionel Cox Trophy:- Bobby Pocock; Alex Okonkwo; Gregor Webster; James Okonkwo; Elkan Dillon; Eva Lancaster; Daisy Doherty; Shreya Walia; Steffi Swanson. I am sure that I have unwittingly omitted a fantastic achievement (if I have, I am so sorry!), the above list illustrates how successful we are being as a LTA Performance Centre. Congratulations to everybody (Players and Coaches) in the Maidenhead CFS Squads that make them such a successful Performance Squad structure. COX GREEN INDOOR DOME FUTURE ASSURED In 2011, MLTC financially supported the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead in the erection of the Dome at Cox Green School. The money has been repaid by the council through the usage of the Dome by MLTC members and CFS Squads. In 2015 the leisure services (including Cox Green Dome) were contracted out to Legacy Leisure (Parkwood Leisure) for a period of 10 years. Maidenhead LTC opened negotiations with Legacy Leisure (profit making company) at the beginning of 2015 but they were reluctant to commit to a deal and subsequently decided that it would invite parties to tender (sealed bid) for the exclusive usage of the Dome. This was prompted by a local commercial Tennis provider expressing a serious interest to acquire the Dome. Over the past 3 months Maidenhead LTC has been compiling a competitive tender for submission in late November. It’s with great pleasure, we can confirm that Legacy Leisure awarded the contract to MLTC as the exclusive “Tennis Supplier” for 2016 and 2017. Upon receiving the great news, Nigel Mann said “I am delighted that we were successful in the tender and I would like to thank Sue Topchik (Chairman) and John Coleman (Treasurer) and the committee for their support and expertise in the application process. The competitive nature of the tender and the historical low court hire charge will result in increased court hire charges but we will still able to offer fantastic value for indoor tennis to both our performance players and MLTC members”. By lot Carolyn Pocock MLTC New Junior Secretary For those of you that don't know me, my name is Carolyn Pocock and I am the new junior representative on the MLTC committee. I have been a club member for nearly four years, my son Bobby is a green ball player in CFS. During my time as junior rep I would like to look at the following things: Getting more juniors involved in club nights including our CFS players. This is an opportunity to allow our children to socialise and have some fun as they work so hard at their squads. I'm thinking of starting a tuck shop, or offering a drink and biscuit after each club night, to encourage the juniors to stay and socialise for a while after they have played. I also plan on running an event each half term, this might be, movies, quizzes, table tennis etc. Ideas and volunteers are very welcome. Getting parents involved, I'd love to see more parents at the clubs social events and meetings. The juniors are the future of the club and we need to look after their interests. If you don't play tennis you can be a social member for £26 a year which gives you full voting rights. Unfortunately there will be no winter teams this season, there weren't enough volunteers to run them. We hope to enter plenty of Aegon teams to start in May, each team will need a parent captain in order to run, with help from myself and the coaches of course. I am very open to your and your children's ideas on how the junior section should run over the next couple of years! Please email me with any ideas carolynpocock@gmail.com The sign up sheets for the junior Christmas parties are now on the junior notice board. Red and orange players on Thursday 10th December, I understand Father Christmas is hoping to come along. The older players party is on Friday 11th December. The bar will be open both evenings so please stay and have a drink if you can! A Story of a 12 year old Junior Player One day a junior tennis player, whilst riding in the car with his coach to a tournament, was discussing his match and the tactics he needed to employ to beat his opponent. The match was played on clay and it was a match he was favoured to win. His coach told him "Today I want you to serve and volley every point" The player proceeded to look at his coach with bewilderment as he never serve and volleyed and replied "What? But I can beat this guy if I play my game from the baseline" His coach was adamant that he wanted him to serve and volley every opportunity. The match was played and the junior lost and was very upset afterwards and even held some resentment towards his coach. As they drove home the coach turned to the player and said " Well done. today you showed me why you will be a champion. You trusted me we're prepared to go out of your comfort zone and showed me we can work together as a team" Who is the well known player???? (See page 15 for answer) A record 9 Maidenhead LTC players represented Berkshire at the Lionel Cox County Tournament in May. Bobby Pocock, Shreya Walia and Steffi Swanson represented Berkshire 9&U, Alex Okonkwo and Eva Lancaster played in the 10&U county event, and Elkan Dillon, Gregor Webster, James Okonkwo and Daisy Doherty played in the very strong 12&U event. This year it was based in the fantastic venue of Queenswood Girls School in Hertfordshire, where over 180 children competed across 26 courts. The results from the boy and girls age groups were combined and after a long weekend Berkshire managed to come 7th out of 10 (very strong) counties from across the east region. A big congratulations to the U10 girls age group where Berkshire came 2nd overall narrowly losing to Middlesex in their final. A fantastic achievement from the Maidenhead players showing the strength of the club. Top performances (8 –10U) during Apr—Oct 2015!!! overview of term COACHING CORNER - THE VOLLEY 00:01 Preparation Phase 00:01 Unit Turn 00:01 Hitting Phase In the preparation phase note the athletic balanced position, with the feet a bit wider than the shoulders, and the upper body leaning slightly forwards. Having just finished the split-step, knees are bent and head and shoulders are level, with arms in front of the body. This phase marks the beginning of the stroke where the shoulders turn in conjunction with the racket and the body. This stored energy will later be transferred to contact with the ball. You can also see the first step which initiates movement to the ball. Note how the non-racket arm is used to maintain balance. As the hitting phase begins notice how the racquet is lined up behind the flight of the ball. From this position the racquet will move forward and slightly downward to the ball which enables the player to impart backspin. You can clearly see how the player unleashes the stored energy loaded in the muscle groups in a sequential order. 00:01 Contact 00:02 Follow through and Recovery At contact the speed in which the ball is struck is a combination of forward lower body movement coupled with the forward swing of the racket. The wrist is very stable at contact with little or no flexion or extension occurring. In this phase, recovery is seen by the squaring of the shoulders, the return to the classic ready position and the player again beginning to prepare to execute a split step to address the next shot. Note that the follow through of the racket is minimal Okonkwo stars in Maidenhead tennis finals OLIVER Okonkwo was the star on show at the 2015 Maidenhead Lawn Tennis Club finals with five wins at junior and senior level. Okonkwo, who is tipped to be a future champion of the sport, won the Men’s Singles Open title after a 7-6(5), 6-3 win against runner-up Andrew Flynn. He was then crowned Under-18 (U18) Boys Singles winner following a 6-1, 7-6 (5) victory over Tom Swanson. Was a great story told to me by Emilio Sanchez a few years back at his academy as to what makes Rafa so great. One thing parents and players must ALWAYS remember is that it is a long developmental journey and results can take too much of a priority over developing a player to reach the long term goals that are set. Whilst building the right foundations technically, tactically and physical are of upmost importance it's the look in the eyes and the desire of a junior to be willing to do whatever is required, and be prepared to take a fall. Like Rafa, when someone is put out of their comfort zone, that is truly when a person's true character is on show. And that's part of the reason why Rafael Nadal is arguably the greatest and fiercest competitor in world sport today! The LTA have introduced FAST4 which starts in September 2015 FAST4 Tennis provides a simple, exciting way of speeding up a conventional tennis match. The fundamentals of tennis remain the same, but there are four rules that ensure matches are fast, competitive, exciting and can be completed in a reasonable period of time. FAST4 Tennis is being introduced to the British Tennis junior competition structure from September 2015 with the winter county tour (Grade 4 and 5) events using this format for 10U - 18U. Some other competitions across Great Britain will also use this format. It doesn’t matter how you get there, just make sure you do before your opponent does! At 3 games all a tiebreak is played to 5 points. A deciding point will be played at 4 points all. If the score reaches deuce, it’s a sudden death point. The receiver choses which side to take the serve on. This also applies in doubles with the receiving pair deciding who receives the serve - however the pair cannot change positions. In mixed doubles the player of the same gender shall receive. If the serve clips the net and lands in the service box, there’s no let and the ball is in play. If you are playing doubles either the receiver or the receiver’s partner can play SARAH HYLTON – LTA STRETCHING PROGRAMME shoulder stretch forearm stretch bicep stretch chest stretch upper back stretch tricep stretch waist stretch thigh stretch hamstring 3 way stretch groin stretch hip flexor stretch piriformis stretch stomach stretch figure 4 stretch lower back stretch
