Brown Heating & Cooling JULY 2016 | FELIX GRUNDY FESTIVAL | 11 Kricket Alley highlights 2016 Felix Grundy entertainment By Rob Maharry The Grundy Register GRUNDY CENTER- There’s plenty of entertainment on the docket for this year’s installment of Felix Grundy Days in Grundy Center, with a mix of both local and regional artists taking the stage to play songs for festival goers on Friday and Saturday. The fun kicks off on Friday at 5:00 p.m. with the Johnson Family Strings, based out of New Hartford, who play old-time religious string music. Patrons are in for a treat from 7:00 to 8:00 on the gazebo as the Brazilian 2wins, who originally hail from Rio de Janeiro but now play around the Midwestern U.S., put their unique spin on pop, jazz and reggae hits. Walter (electric violin, vocals) and Wagner (ukulele, keyboards) are the twins for which the band is named, and they are joined by Riley on bass, Evan on lead guitar and Raqwon on drums. Wrapping up the schedule on Friday night is Ultimate Entertainment karaoke from 7:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. Saturday kicks off with the New Horizons Band playing in the high school auditorium from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., and the Grundy Center Sports Hall of Fame, Magic Mike, junior girls dance, movement dance and Allie Bagenstos will all be on the gazebo throughout the afternoon beginning at noon. Saturday evening’s entertainment starts at five with a performance from the high school drill team, followed by the Philbo Baggins Band from 5:30 to 6:00. Local singers Treye Schupbach and Hailey Junker, who are alums of Grundy Center and Dike-New Hartford high schools, respectively, will play from 6:00 to 7:00 and 7:00 to 8:00 before the main show from 9:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. featuring Kricket Alley, a country and rock variety cover band based in Waynesville, Missouri. This will be the first time the band has played in Iowa, but judging from their experiences across small town Kansas and Missouri, lead singer Christina “Kricket” Webster believes they will fit right in at Felix Grundy Days. “I love small town festivals; I am from a small town myself. JULY 2016 | FELIX GRUNDY FESTIVAL | 3 )HOL[*UXQG\)HVWLYDORȾHUVQHZ HQWHUWDLQPHQWIXQIRUWKHZKROHIDPLO\ By Michaela Kendall The Grundy Register GRUNDY CENTER – This year’s Felix Grundy Festival promises to offer all the tried-and-true festival favorites, as well as several fun, new additions. The most notable addition to this year’s festival is the carnival rides being offered by entertainment company Amusement Associates. On both Friday, July 8 and Saturday, July 9, there will be rides set up in the festival area. There will be around 10 to 12 rides, which will be suitable for kids all ages. The rides will range from thrill rides to a mechanical bull to jousting and more. In order to fund the rides, the Felix Grundy Festival committee will be offering pre-sale wristbands and tickets up until the start of the festival. There are two different wristbands for sale: one for Friday and one for Saturday. The wristbands will allow the rider to go on almost every ride, with the exception of the mechanical bull, for the day that the wristband is valid for. On Fri- day, the rides will run from noon to 9 p.m., and on Saturday they will run from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Another new event at this year’s festival is an outdoor movie showing at the courthouse yard, sponsored by Engelkes Abels Funeral Home. The movie being shown is “Nanny McPhee,” the 2005 Fantasy/Comedy about a man who hires a nanny to care for his seven rambunctious children, who have chased away all previous nannies. This nanny, Nanny McPhee, uses mystical powers to instill discipline to the children. When the children’s great-aunt threatens to separate the kids, the family pulls together under the guidance of Nanny McPhee. The movie will be showing at 8:30 p.m., and has a run time of 1 hour and 39 minutes. Popcorn will be sponsored by the Center Theatre. Among other events new to this year’s festival are several new Gazebo Entertainment acts, including: the Johnson Family Strings, Brazilian Twins, Magic Mike and much more. Two offices to better serve you! :HҋUHYHU\SURXGRIRXUQHZRIÀFHDQGWKHPDQ\ZD\VLWZLOOPDNH LWHDVLHUWKDQHYHUWRPHHW\RXULQVXUDQFHQHHGV6WRSE\IRUDYLVLW MEET YOUR 2016 Felix Grundy Festival hosts Mindy Greany - Festival Chair This is my 8th year on the festival. I enjoy being on the festival as it is a way for me to give back to the community. I love to be able to provide many children and adults with a weekend full of great activities, food and music!!! We look for new and different activities each year with this year bringing back the carnival rides, and many new acts performing on the gazebo!! Carrie Theesfeld This is my 7th year on the festival. I enjoy being involved in the community of Grundy Center, even though we don’t live here, my husband and I both work here so we enjoy being part of the festival. Shannon Simms This is my 3rd year on the festival. The part I love most about the Felix Grundy Festival is all of the fun things for our kids to do; the parade, rides and games. I’m on the committee because I want to be able to give back to the community. When I first joined my goal was to get our rides back and I am elated that we have finally reached that goal this year. Katie Simms Toni Nederhoff Agency 1120 Edgington Avenue Eldora, IA 50627 (641) 858-2318 www.toninederhoff.com 803 G Avenue Grundy Center, IA 50638 (319) 825-2318 Bus (888) 320-9487 Toll Free This is my 3rd year on the festival. What I love most about the festival is: all the activities that are provided for people of all ages. I’m on the committee because growing up I lived across from the courthouse square where we were always in the heart of all the activities happening around the festival, it was something I looked forward to every year and have a lot of memories enjoying the rides and activities. I joined the committee to make sure the memories I have as a child from the festival are passed on to my children and others in the community. Jenn Boege This is my 1st year on the festival. I love the family atmosphere. I chose to be on the committee to help bring more family activities to Felix. Whitnee Beenken This is my 1st year on the festival. I chose to be on the committee so that I could hopefully add a fresh perspective and new ideas. My favorite thing about the festival is all the people it brings to town. I love seeing old classmates, people from neighboring towns and people from out of state. It is a great seeing all those people out and about. A message from the committee: We would like to thank all the sponsors for supporting Felix 2016. We are always looking for volunteers to be on the committee, setting up and tearing down, or helping with the weekend activities. If interested, you can contact us on the website at www.felixgrundyfestival. com/ If anyone has any questions during the festival, the committee members will be wearing pink tank tops, so just look for the gals in the pink Felix tanks! Earlier this year, Davis won a design contest that was held within the Grundy Center art department. The contest was a joint effort between the Grundy Center Police Department and the school art department to come up with a fun, unique squad car design that could be printed onto the outside of the police department’s brand new squad car. After countless designs were submitted to the police department, Davis’ design was chosen as the winner. The prize for her winning design was 100 Chamber Bucks and, of course, her design printed on the squad car. Another part of the prize is that Davis will have the chance to join Police Chief Doug Frost at the head of the parade lineup, and lead the crowd across town in the brand new squad car sporting her own winning design. You can see the new police car yourself at the Felix Grundy Festival Grand Parade starting at 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 9! ‘Future is Bright’ to be the theme for 2016 GNBee Kids Club Junior Parade The 2016 Felix Grundy Festival includes an opportunity for children to be ‘on parade.’ The Junior Parade is scheduled for Friday, July 8 at 6 p.m., beginning near the Grundy Center Elementary School playground, and heading north on 8th Street to the Courthouse Square, just in time for the opening festivities of the Festival.
