We plan to utilise an inquiry-based learning model for each of these units.
Inquiry-based learning can have many definitions and can be compared
directly to other forms of instruction such as problem-based learning. In a
general sense, we define inquiry-based learning as a process where
students formulate investigative questions, obtain factual information from a
variety of sources, and then build knowledge that ultimately reflects their
answer to the original question.
During our Term 3 unit LETS Innovate and Create, students will focus on
understanding:
• And exploring attributes of being innovative, creative and entrepreneurial
• The importance of business in developing and maintaining a prosperous
community
• That success comes from knowing how to work individually or as part of
a group
• That people appreciate, interpret and express their ideas, beliefs and
cultures through various art forms.
Each class will use a different context for this study. Please check with your
child’s class teacher is they have not already informed you of this.
Planning for our new Information Centre is advancing rapidly. This project
will see a new Information Centre built on the grass area between Room 4
and the existing library. Our current library will be converted to a classroom.
We hope to be in a position to call tenders for this project later this term.

Our school theme for 2009 is LETS – Learning and Exploring Together to
Succeed. Each term students will be involved in a unit with a school-wide
common theme. LETS integrated themes during 2009 are as follows:
• Term 3 - LETS Innovate and Create
• Term 4 - LETS Compete and Challenge
20/40 HOUR FAMINE MAY 22-24
Cotswold School had 47 children from Years 4-6 and one teacher
participating in famines. Children chose their own famine – the classic No
Food famine, the no technology famine, the No talking famine (popular with
parents), and the theme famine where the children chose a theme for 20-40
hours.
Famine funds raised will help children living in poverty in developing
countries. We raised an impressive total of $2538.90. A special mention
needs to go to Bella Stewart, Brooke McBeth and Brianna Tipa who each
raised over $100! Great efforts girls.

THANK YOU - KAPAHAKA UNIFORMS
While our Kapahaka children were performing on Monday 8 June for the
Bishopdale Probus Club they were wearing their brand new Cotswold
Kapahaka uniforms. All the boys uniforms have been carefully made by Lyn
Cotter, a grandparent of our school. The girls uniforms have been made by
Heather Baker, Leanne Baker and Lyn Cotter.

In Term 3 our Kapahaka will be performing for the first time in the Town Hall
at the Cultural Festival. I am sure they will all enjoy the experience and do
Cotswold proud!

Lead by Alesha MacKenzie in the front, the group performed a variety of
waiata including poi and rakau sticks. While there were a few nerves at the
start, by the end of the performance the children had grown tremendously in
confidence and were really enjoying themselves.

NGA TAI TAMARIKI AROHA – KAPAHAKA PERFORMANCE
In April, Cotswold School received a call from the Bishopdale Probus Club
asking for a group to come and perform at their club’s birthday morning.
Nga Tai Tamariki Aroha – Cotswold’s Kapahaka group were chosen to
represent our school. Together with specialist Kapahaka tutors, Tania and
Willy Nathan, 20 Year 5 and 6 children practiced and performed for more
than 150 people on Monday 8th June.

have the best possible start to school and in order to do
this we need to plan for their transition to school. We can
only do this if we know the details of children who will be
attending our school well in advance of their planned
enrolment date. Pre-school organisations do not provide
us with this information.

LIONS CHRISTCHURCH SCHOOLS’ MUSIC FESTIVAL
The Cotswold School Choir will be performing on Wednesday 14th
October, 2009 at the Christchurch Town Hall. If your child is in the choir
they should have received a ticket order form already, if not please collect
one from the school office. Please make your cheque out to Cotswold
School and have your orders returned to school no later than Friday 14th
August 2009. Late orders will not be accepted.
SEWING HELPERS
The Junior syndicate are having a "Kiwiana" show at the end of the term
(dates to be confirmed). All children will be performing on stage and if
possible we would like them all to wear a costume. We need people to sew
some costumes for our show. If you are able to assist please see Liz
Lapthorne or Paula Fleming-Connell.
TUESDAY TOUCH AT NUNWEEK PARK
This is a popular mixed gender competition (6-Aside). This year the
competition organisers will be running a graded competition in some
grades. It is hoped this will even up section play. Games are always on
Tuesdays and children can compete in the following age groups:
• Y0-2
• Y3-4
• Y5-6
Registration forms will be issued for this competition during week 3/4 of
Term 3. Once teams are established the school will issue invoices for
payment (approx $25). This competition runs during Term 4 this year and
Term 1 2010. Children must be prepared to play for the whole season.
Last season the school had 17 teams competing in this competition. This
year, if possible, we would like to have smaller teams, this means more
game time for the children involved. To do this we need PARENTS who are
prepared to coach and GIRLS. Interested parents please see Mr Harper.

Aotearoa Showcase is the Cotswold Performing Arts Extravaganza of the
year! This even features groups from all levels of the school: Dance
Groups, Drama, Recorder, Jam and Kapa Haka.
Dates to Remember
• 7th September - Tickets go on sale 8.30 -8.55am and 2.30 -3pm
Cost $4 per seat.
• 23rd September – Matinee Performance 1.30 – 3pm
• 24th September – Evening Performance 6 – 7.30pm

SWIMMING TERM 4
During term 4 the Year 2 and 3 children will be involved in swimming at
Jellie Park weeks 3- 4 (October 27th- 6th November. The total cost for
swimming will be $45 for the two weeks- this price includes payment for 9
swimming lessons and the bus to and from Jellie Park. Students will be
invoiced for this amount later in the term.

Rhythmic Gymnastic is a sport that combines elements of dance,

sense of rhythm while building confidence. You are invited to come along
and observe or have a go in our warm and friendly environment. We are

Any knitting yarn, wool, acrylic or wool/acrylic mix to be used for knitting
jerseys, beanies and scarves for children in the slums of India.
Lynda spittle is taking a team of volunteers over in January and these items
have been requested. Small bits and pieces are fine as colourful stripes are
very popular with the children. We have willing knitters ready to work.
