In November 2006, he, and Ann along with his daughter & granddaughter relocated to Aiken, South Carolina. Without missing a beat, he immediately joined the Hammons Marine Corps League Detachment. For the past nine years he has served as their Detachment Commandant for two years and became the Junior Past Commandant in April 2015. Also, he volunteers his time and support as the Detachment Boy Scout Coordinator. In fact, Dick has already presented nine Good Citizenship Award Certificates to Eagle Scouts at their Court of Honor! Moreover, in the Military Order of Devil Dogs, he was elected to Police Dog after serving three terms as Mad Dog in the local Pound. Then Dick was re-elected as Mad Dog for a third term in the Pack of South Carolina. On June 6, 2015 at the Department Banquet Dinner in North Charleston, Marine Dick Schreck was awarded the Department of South Carolina 2015 Marine of the Year Award. CONTINUED GOOD HEALTH TO YOU BOTH! SEMPER FI L/CPL Robert J. Slattery, Marine Corps League Det #206, NEWSLETTER, Jul 2015 - #9 New Jersey Fallen Service Member Tree Memorial Ceremony Picatinny Arsenal On June 13, 2015, I had the honor of representing Commandant Robert Beck and The LCLP Robert J. Slattery Detachment at the New Jersey Fallen Service Members Ceremony. It was an impressive dedication for the families of those who have given their lives since September 11, 2011. This solemn observance commenced in 2008 dedicating 119 trees to those who lost their lives through 2007 including Operations Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, and New Dawn. As of 2014, 174 memorial trees are now planted on the installation in memory of New Jersey’s fallen service members. Each spring the tradition carries on honoring the fallen service members from the previous year. Moreover, the red oak was chosen because it is our state tree. It represents the heroic measures these service members freely made for their country and commitment to duty. This year as we entered Linder Conference Center, Army Brigadier General Patrick W. Burden welcomed guests and family members. While waiting in the gathering area, I greeted many friends at Picatinny both civilian and military. I had the pleasure of visiting with Cheryl & Ray Doltz, parents of Army Sgt. Ryan Doltz. Also attending were Slattery detachment members Shirley & Nino Parrello, parents of LCLP Brian Parrello. Slattery, Marine Corps League Det #206, NEWSLETTER, Jul 2015 - 10 New Jersey Fallen Service Member Tree Memorial Ceremony Picatinny Arsenal Continued from page #9 The ceremony started at exactly 0930 hours with heartfelt remarks given by General Burden following was a moving rendition of our National Anthem sung by Mrs. Saveria Campanile. Proceeding, Major Patrick D. Farrell read the names of all 174 New Jersey Fallen Service Members with a complete reverence from the auditorium. As typically played during any military funeral honors, a 21-gun salute, a bagpipe rendition of "Amazing Grace" and bugle playing "Taps" were included with an Armed Forces Medley. At the conclusion, the families were transported to the Memorial Tree location. Here, the red oak trees had been planted with a granite marker inscribed with the name of each New Jersey’s fallen service members from the prior year. I chose not to accompany the families; I paid my respects earlier, quietly before the ceremony. As I walked through out the site I replaced some old worn out small flags with new ones. It was a time for reflection and to collect my thoughts. I decided to sit on one of the benches and noticed everything from the perfectly manicured grass to immaculate kept granite markers. I watched as soldiers made last minute preparations at the tree sites. Civilian workers surveyed the area to see what needed attention. No matter who passed, I expressed my sincere thank you and job well done. This is a solemn and sacred area. To look out across the landscape and see all these beautiful majestic trees and know what sacrifice was given to behold them. As each tree matures it is a symbol of strength and endurance, for the families healing, for their lost loved one, for their country. Whenever you have the opportunity to be a visitor at Picatinny Arsenal I wholeheartedly recommend paying tribute with your reflections and prayers at this significantly inspiring Tree Memorial site. Slattery, Marine Corps League Det #206, NEWSLETTER, Jul 2015 - 11 Flag Day festivities take over downtown Somerville (Left) Marines perform Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima (Right) USMC Gunnery Sergeant(Ret) Mario Monaco gives children spent shells SOMERVILLE – The "Second Annual Flag Day Festival" took place Saturday afternoon on the lawn of the historic county courthouse on East Main Street. Live music, interactive exhibits, contests with prizes, historic military vehicles, modern SWAT vehicles and historical re-enactors were featured. There also were games, entertainment and arts and crafts for children of all ages, as well as food and snack vendors. The festival was organized by members of the Somerville Elks, YMCA, Boy Scouts, John Basilone Parade Committee, American Legion and others, and also has the support of AT&T. All proceeds from event sponsors and advertisers will go to fund programs through the Somerville Elks Charitable Trust, benefitting local veterans. Part of the entertainment for the day was a performance contest called the "American Flag Day SuperPatriot." The contest was run through the School of Rock in Somerville and these musical performers demonstrated their patriotism while showcasing their talents. Participants were encouraged to bring non-perishable food items, which will be sent by Operation Jersey Cares to service members overseas. Worn flags were collected for proper retirement by the American Legion. Visit www.FlagDayFestival.org or on Facebook www.facebook.com/FlagDayFestival Gunny, Thank you and your team of Marines so much for performing your moving reenactment at Flag Day Festival. This was my absolute favorite part of the entire day! And I received many other comments from people in attendance who enjoyed it very much as well. The shells being fired remind us of the cost of freedom as the reenactment brings this momentous event to a younger generation. We hope that you are able to come back next year - we have tentatively scheduled June 11 for the event and June 12 as the rain date. Thank you for your efforts to keep this important event in the minds of our citizens on Flag Day and throughout the year. Regards, Michael Minaides
