Mark off area with garden water hose filled with water, safety cones, or similar boundary markers. Make sure children understand they must drive only inside this safe area. Be sure there are no curbs, tables, porches, decks, or overhanging objects in or near this area a child may run under or into that would injure them. Running 4 to 6 vehicles requires a space of 30 x 40 ft. or more. Traffic Driving School uses 3 flags. Red (stop) / Green (go) / Yellow (caution-careful) One way signs and stop signs you can make up. Kids love to help! Our Formula 5 Racing School uses 5 flags. Red (stop) / Green (go) / Yellow (caution-careful) / Black (no intentional bumping) / Checker (winner-race over) DRIVER RULES: NO INTENTIONAL BUMPING OR DRIVING INTO THINGS !!!!! Best maximum driver weight: 60 lbs. Height: 44“. Drivers learn ABC’s, “Always Be Careful!” Do not operate children’s vehicles near other moving vehicles, in parking lots, on streets, sidewalks, or down hills. Instruct children to take foot off pedal to stop. Beware of dogs that chase cars. Keep other children a safe distance away from car when occupied by a driver. Keep children in a separate safety zone outside the driving area. WHAT WEATHER, TYPE OF SURFACES VEHICLE CAN RUN ON Indoors and outdoors. Never operate in rain, water puddles, mud, or sandy surfaces. Vehicle operates best on dry, clean, and level hard surfaces, and moderately well on hard packed earth and very close-cut dry grass. Best operating temperatures: 60 to 90 degrees. The harder the track surface the longer the batteries will operate the car before recharging is necessary. Be sure batteries are fully charged before any driving begins. For running in grass, hard dirt, some owners have added a 1” thick foam type air filter inside the body panel under the rear of the car. Just remove the 10 screws and panel, trim the filter to 5 3/8” x 7 1/4” to fit inside the air duct. Reassemble. The filter will keep out most dust and dirt. Safety Rules require adults assemble vehicle, recharge batteries, and supervise children during use. 6 easy steps to assembly. ABC - Always Be Careful! Tools Included 1. Don’t operate near tables, porches, near vehicles or other obstacles where a child may not stop, can run under, or into something that would strike them. Helmets: Are not required by law but we recommend that you purchase one that fits and help the child get used to wearing it. Always suggest using the seat belt. It’s the law! Never Operate In Wet Weather: Don’t drive through water. Be prepared to assist child to enjoy the driving experience safely. ADULTS CHARGE BATTERIES AFTER EACH USE FOR 8-12 HOURS Do not run car when it starts going slowly in high gear. It is time to charge batteries. They can be recharged 300 times or more when properly recharged after each use. Be careful when handling batteries. Never drop batteries or casings may crack open. Battery acid is dangerous and corrosive. Replace any battery with case damage. Always dispose of old batteries at a government approved lead-acid recycling center, local seller of automobile batteries, or contact Waste Management Inc. in your area. Use the charger supplied and charge the batteries 8 - 12 hours. Never more than 20 hours. Be sure to charge them after each use (no matter how long you’ve run the car). The more you charge the batteries after each use the longer they will last (300 times or more) and several years. If you don’t charge them they will lose power and won’t hold a charge very long. They discharge quickly. If you use replacement battery charger, be sure it meets the charging recommendations of the battery. The battery charger voltage should read 12.50 DC Volts (or more) when plugged into the wall outlet but not connected to the batteries. Check the plugs two outside terminals. The battery charger when connected to the batteries and charging, the voltage will be 14-15 DC Volts or more. A digital voltmeter is the best way to check battery voltage. About one hour after taking off charger each battery should read 6.40 to 6.70 volts. If not, you need new batteries. HOW TO SAFELY CHARGE BATTERIES Always LOOK at the battery plugs before pushing them together! The Battery Charger, and all wire harnesses use simple male / female auto trailer type connectors so there is no possibility of making a mistake when connecting together if you look carefully. Charger and batteries are stored under seat (also tools). Remove battery cover screws and battery hold down brackets to remove charger and access batteries. Batteries are fully charged before shipment. However, for stable power supply charge batteries 8-12 hours before using vehicle first time. No more than 20 hours. Before using charger be sure local household voltage is the same as shown on the label of the battery charger! US 110 Volts AC ! WARNING! The battery charger is not a toy for playing with. Keep out of the hands of children! Never leave plugged in or charging batteries more than 20 hours! Follow Instructions for charging batteries shown on the battery box cover decal or this manual. Twin Battery Pack Two 6 VDC 10 Amp Lead Acid Sealed Gel Cell Safety “No Spill” Type Protected with Two “Auto” Type 35 - 40 Amp Fuses & Thermal Circuit Breaker VEHICLE WILL NOT RUN AFTER CHARGING BATTERIES 12-20 HOURS 1. Check sound and motor switches on dashboard. Be sure in ON position. 2. Check that battery plug is connected to plug inside battery box under seat. 3. Check fuse in each battery is plugged in correctly and not burned out. Remove batteries to install fuses. Fuse terminals must fit in sockets correctly to work. 4. Check wires on battery terminals are securely fastened. 5. Check voltage of each battery at terminals - and battery plug is 6.25 - 6.50 volts. 6. Check two wires on each motor (remove bottom body panel) are on both motors. 7. Check rear wheels turn by hand without locking up gears. 8. Check foot pedal operates accelerator/brake switch. Push foot go - Foot off stop . IF - any wires are loose vehicle will not run - or will run slowly. IF - battery voltage is low charge batteries 12 - 20 hours and check voltage. IF - battery shows no voltage check fuses in each battery again - may be burned out. IF - battery won’t take full charge or discharges quickly - batteries must be replaced. VEHICLE RUNS SLOWLY 1. Check if batteries need charging. If voltage below 6.25 volts each charge 12 - 20 hours. 2. Check the batteries again. Replace if they don’t fully charge or discharge quickly. 3. Check all electrical connections. Make sure all are connections are correct and tight. 4. Check battery charger. Output voltage when charging batteries should be 14 - 15 volts. Low household power and long extension cords can affect charger voltage. 5. Check that rear wheels can be turned by hand and motors turn. It is normal for the wheels to be hard to turn. However, If gearboxes or motors are broken or something is wrong inside gearbox or motor you will feel difference, or hear the difference 6. If gearbox or motor is locked up, disassemble and check for broken parts. 7. Warning! Do not lose screws, washers, and nuts when working around motors. Motor magnets attract metal parts that can get inside motors and ruin them. IF YOU CANNOT CORRECT PROBLEM Phone (866) 595-4530 for advice. CHECK CHARGER DURING CHARGING It is normal for battery charger to get warm while batteries are charging. If charger is not warm it is not charging. Check battery fuses. They may be burned out. Replace with 30 or 40 amp rated automotive fuses available at auto supply stores. REPLACEMENT BATTERIES - FUSES: Two 6 volt 10 amp sealed gel cell lead acid re- chargeable batteries are used to supply the 12 volts. Low gear and reverse gear uses 6 volts to operate. Gearshift switches batteries to 12 volts to operate high gear. These safety batteries are used for industrial applications in power tools, security systems, and medical electronics and are available world wide from industrial suppliers. The battery size is 5.95” x 1.97” x 3.84” wt. 4.41 lbs. Each battery has it’s own 35 - 40 amp replaceable automotive plug in fuse located in the special wiring harness supplied with the car. Replacements available at auto supply stores. ! WARNING! The battery wiring harness as installed is correctly marked for polarity. If removed to replace batteries be sure to connect wires same way or short circuit and electrical fire can result. Extra battery wiring harnesses are available. Check the parts list. ! WARNING! Store battery charger under seat or safely away from children. It is not a toy for playing. It is to be used only as recommended. Adults charge batteries. ! WARNING! Check all electrical wiring. Any bare wires, burnt wires, any wire damaged in any way replace. ! WARNING! Never attempt to substitute a paper clip or any other type of wire to replace a fuse. HOW TO STORE VEHICLE WHEN NOT IN USE Turn both switches on dash to off. Charge batteries 8 -12 hours. Leave batteries unplugged from car, or remove from car. Store at room temperature in animal safe area. Animals have been known to chew on electrical wires. Recharge batteries every three months for 8 -12 hours as they lose their charge when not being used. HOW TO TRANSPORT OR SHIP Fits in the back seat of most vehicles. Weight 47 lbs including batteries. Measuring 54” long, 28” wide and 17” high it can be placed on it’s side across the rear seat as the batteries are sealed gel cell safety type. If space is too small, remove 4 wheels, slide them on the rear axle for safe keeping. One screw removes the rear wing if necessary. If shipping car anywhere, install both battery brackets securely over batteries with screws. For easy moving on the ground, reach under the front bumper find the “hand hold” and lift up. The rear of the vehicle will rest on the “luggage type roller wheels” under vehicles rear end. Vehicle will move like a hand truck. When vehicle is new the gearbox, wheels and axles are tight and require a “breaking in” period like real cars. Run 5 - 10 minutes, then let cool down 5 - 10 minutes for the first hour or two. 1. There are two ON/OFF switches on dashboard. The left one turns on engine sound, the right one the motors. Always turn switches to “Off” position when not in use or in storage. 2. Step on foot pedal on floor and the vehicle runs. Take foot off pedal and vehicle stops. 3. This vehicle is equipped with a two speed gearshift. Push forward for high speed 5 MPH and backward for low speed 2.5 MPH. To operate vehicle in low speed for training, temporarily remove the fuse in the battery that has the Red and Black wires attached. Replace fuse when two speeds are again desired and when you recharge batteries. 4. Vehicle has “forward/backward” (reverse) switch in front of gearshift handle. Push forward to go forward, backward to go backward. This vehicle will only go in low speed (2.5 MPH) in reverse regardless what position gearshift is in. 5. Explain to child, NOT TO push “Forward/Backward” switch when vehicle is running. Always stop vehicle first before changing direction to protect electrical system and child’s safety. Do not permit child to rock switch back and forth. It can damage the electrical system. 6. Adjust seat so child’s foot reaches pedal. Child must wear shoes. Adjust seat belt. If seat belt is too long turn car upside down and tie knot in seat belts to shorten. Remove body panel underneath car to locate right side seat belt. 7. Adjust steering wheel to fit driver. Adjust mirrors. If mirrors become loose tighten screw in mirror mount underneath car. When the vehicle is overloaded or used wrongly, the vehicle will shut off for 15 - 20 seconds and automatically reset itself after conditions return to normal. Both batteries are protected by their own fuse. Each battery has its own replaceable for automotive type 35 - 40 amp fuse that plugs into the wiring harness on the battery terminals. To see if a fuse is burned out, remove the batteries, remove the fuse from the side of the battery and look at the wire inside the fuse. If it looks burned out, replace fuse from auto parts store. HOW LONG WILL VEHICLE RUN BEFORE RECHARGE BATTERIES Drive Time: 2 to 5 hours per battery charge. Time depends on drivers weight and surface being run on. The lighter the driver and more level and harder the surface, the longer the vehicle will run because less battery power is required to operate the car. It takes more battery power to drive through grass or other high drag soft surfaces. HOW TO INCREASE DRIVING TIME 1. The more the driver steers the wheel back and forth the more battery power required. Teach driver to drive smoothly, using both hands on the steering wheel at all times except for shifting. 2. The more the driver stops and goes (it takes lots of power to start the vehicle moving) the more battery power required to get it started. Starts and stops drain the batteries. 3. Battery powered vehicles perform best when allowed to cool off after every 5 - 10 minutes of running. If you run 5 or 10 minutes, let cool off the same time. It’s better to have a number of short races than long ones. HOW TO WASH, SHINE, KEEP VEHICLE CLEAN Never use a water hose! Never leave out in rain. If vehicle gets wet, do not operate! Dry out in sunny dry weather for several hours until no sign of moisture! Test carefully! To clean use a soft cloth dampened with one teaspoon of dish washer detergent in quart of water and another with plain water so you have one to clean with and one to rinse. Use soft cloths to wash and wipe. Paper towels scratch the plastic surface. Windex also works. Do not use car polish or furniture polishes containing wax. Use only Plastic polish for colored plastics as some clear plastic polishes will dull surface. Always test a small area first. Sprays like Meguiar’s “Auto Detailer” work well, plus they keep the dust away. HOW TO PAINT, CUSTOMIZE AND DECORATE YOUR KIDRACER New plastic spray paints work fairly well. Krylon’s “Fusion” in 16 colors is one of them. Painted surfaces will get scraped and scratched in competitions so be prepared to repaint. Follow the instructions on the spray can carefully. Wash off plastic car parts several times with detergent liquid soap and water to clean surface and dry thoroughly before painting. Disassemble before painting! Do not paint seat, steering wheel, battery box cover, wheels, gearboxes, inside of drivers compartment, or panels under body. Auto Striping tape in different sizes is available in most auto parts stores that carry auto paints. Color coded PVC electrical tape 3/4” wide is available in hardware and auto parts stores and works pretty well. It generally comes in a 5 color pack. 3M and others make it. It sticks well and goes around corners. Don’t stretch it when you apply. It’s also easy to remove. Names and Decals. There are numerous instant sign shops that can design and make decals for you. Racing decals are available from race shops and teams. Any modification of O.E.M. electrical and mechanical drive parts as installed by the factory or replacement of other than O.E.M electrical and mechanical drive parts approved by the factory voids all warranties and liability. The installer assumes all risks of modifying original parts or installing unauthorized parts. Authorized Replacements: Nuts. bolts, washers, of same specifications Replacement batteries of same specifications RACING TUNE UP TIPS ELECTRIC CONNECTIONS: Every terminal and connector must be tight and showing no sign of corrosion. If loose, you will have no electrical current and vehicle will not reach full speed, or may not run at all. Radio Shack type stores sell a liquid to apply to improve electrical conductivity but it is not necessary unless there are signs of corrosion. TIRES AND WHEELS: The wheels have inner and outer “lifetime” nylon bearings and must spin on the axle freely. No lubricant is necessary. Some owners spray the bearings with Teflon dry spray lubricant. To keep the rubber tire belts clean use liquid detergent and water, and rinse with water. Be sure the rubber tire belts fit inside the grooves in the wheels. Be sure to press them in grooves tightly. WHEEL LUG NUTS: If you remove the wheels more than 20 times be sure the 8 mm nylon lock nuts still secure the wheels when you tighten with socket wrench. Keep socket wrenches and screwdriver under seat. If nuts become loose, replacement 8 mm nylon lock nuts are available at major hardware stores. RACE QUICK STEERING: Precision steering using Ackerman geometry and rubber tire belts give smooth control. Car can be steered in 14 ft. circles and zip around closely spaced safety cones with ease. The racing style steering wheel adjusts to fit any driver. Setting up a driving course will improve child’s driving skills. Also provides more fun. DUAL GEARBOXES AND DUAL MOTORS DRIVE BOTH REAR WHEELS: The two high performance electric motors are mounted on each gearbox with two screws. The pinion gear on the motors drive 7 racing type straight cut gears which directly power each rear wheel. Dual rear wheel drive is best for all types of driving. HOW TO REMOVE GEARBOXES TO CHECK GEARS AND LUBRICATION: To re- move the gearbox for inspection or lubricating: (1) Remove the rear wheels. (2) Remove the bottom panel from the underbody ( ten screws ). (3) Remove the wire terminals from motors by depressing the locking tab on the terminal with the point of an open paper clip. WARNING! Replace same way or motors may run wrong way!! (4) Remove the two screws, washers, and nuts holding the gearbox to the body, then slide the gearbox off the axles. To disassemble the gearbox: (1) Remove the screws from the cover and carefully separate. (2) Check and be sure there is grease on all the gear surfaces, shafts and bearings. The factory uses heavy grease. Some owners remove it and use a lighter lubricant of their own choice. Any commercial grease suitable for plastic gears will work. Check the teeth on the gears. If teeth show excessive wear, replace gearbox. HOW TO REMOVE FOOT PEDAL TO CHECK ACCELERATOR BRAKE SWITCH Some models have a pop in - pop out accelerator pedal. (1) Turn vehicle upside down. (2) Place the blade of a large flat screwdriver against the bottom edge of the pedal and hit the screwdriver handle smartly with a medium size hammer. (3) The pedal should pop right out. Two long screws attach box covering wires to accelerator / brake switch inside cockpit. To reassemble, install top side of pedal in hole in floorboard first then tap in bottom part. GO RACING CHECK LIST! 1. Check rubber tire belts clean and in grooves 2. Check wheel nuts - don’t lose a wheel 3. Check steering parts, smooth and not loose 4. Check batteries fully charged, wiring all okay 5. HOW TO APPLY DECALS 1. Before applying decals on car, carefully wash down car several times with mixture of one teaspoon of liquid dishwasher detergent per pint (16 ounces) of water to remove any residue from plastic. Rinse with plain water and dry. Use soft cloth, as paper towels can scratch plastics. DO NOT get any water or moisture near any electrical wires or parts. 2. Decals can be applied direct to dry surface. Measure and mark off where you want them with a piece of masking tape or erasable pencil and carefully position and apply. Be careful of wrinkles and bubbles. Make a pinholes in any bubbles to let out air. 3. Another method is to wet down the body with a mixture of 1 teaspoon of liquid dishwasher detergent per quart (32 ounces) of water which acts as a “wetting agent” so the decal can be positioned on the wet surface of the body without sticking. After placement the water is squeezed out from underneath using a credit card or similar object. The decal will lay flat without bubbles or wrinkles and dries over night. Drivers Names - Other Decals. Check your local instant sign shop for custom made names, logos, decals. Racing decals are also available from race shops and teams. Sometimes ... Free!
