She will be attending Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, MA majoring in mathematics and minoring in Italian. After she is done with school, her future plans are to work at a university in research or become a professor. Erica also hopes to spend part of her life in Italy. During high school, Erica has been involved in Drama, Forensics, Choir, Band, Wrestling, Cheerleader, National Honor Society, Class Treasurer, and the Student Council Secretary. Erica's interests are biking, volunteering at the Forest Larger Parish, and going to the Concordia Language Villages Italian Camp. She is the daughter of Dale and Mary Ellen Keller of Lakewood. 2011 Wabeno High School Salutatorian Heather Huettl Heather Leigh Huettl is graduating from Wabeno High School with a 3.977 grade point average as Salutatorian. She will be attending the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh majoring in Pre-Professional Physical Therapy. She plans on graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Healthcare Science. Heather will then transfer to Madison to receive a Master's Degree in Physical Therapy. During high school, she was involved in Volleyball, Basketball, and Softball for all four years, Class Secretary (Freshman), Vice President (Sophomore), President (Junior & Senior), Band, National Honor Society, Lions Honor Student in English, WIAA Scholar Athlete, Badger Girls State Representative, Academic All Conference for Volleyball, and Basketball Captain as a Senior. Heather is the daughter of Don and Teresa Huettl of Wabeno. ATV Safety Training Course to be offered in Townsend Red Arrow Snowmobile ATV Club will conduct a DNR ATV Safety Course the evenings of Wednesday July 6th and Thursday July 7th. This class is required for legal ATV/UTV operation by anyone born on or after January 1st, 1988. The classes will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. both evenings at the Townsend Town Hall and attendance at both sessions is required. Pre-Registration forms can be obtained by e-mailing jbrantmeier@athenet.net or mailing a request to John Brantmeier, 17643 Bennett Lane, Townsend, WI. 54715. Returning a $10.00 fee and the completed preregistration form will insure a seat in the class as only 30 seats are available…first come first served. This is a “classroom course” so it is not necessary to bring an ATV or riding equipment. Parents and guardians may take the course or observe based on space available. Do you live outside of the Pioneer Express delivery area? See us at www.PioneerExpressCrandon.com Laona High Valedictorian Heather Zimmer Heather Zimmer, youngest daughter of Gary and Olivia Zimmer of Laona, is the Valedictorian of the Laona High School graduating class of 2011. Heather has maintained a 4.0 GPA, while being an active participant in cross-country, softball, and forensics for all four years of her high school career. Her forensics achievements include two silver medals and two gold medals at state competition. She has been a member of the National Honor Society for three years, serving as Co-President for one year. Heather has played a part in every play and musical of the past four years. These extra curricular activities, particularly the state forensics competitions, sectionals in softball and two trips to the state Cross-Country competition comprise her most memorable high school experiences. She will be majoring in Computer Science with a concentration in Graphic Design and Implementation at St. Norbert's College this fall. Heather would like to extend her thanks to her family, friends and teachers and stated; "I couldn't have made it without them." One of her favorite quotes to pass along as words of wisdom to underclassmen is: "Never be afraid to be yourself. Those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind." Laona High Salutatorian Micheala Chrisman The Salutatorian for the Laona graduating class of 2011 is Micheala (Mickey) Chrisman, daughter of Tim and Anne Chrisman, of Laona. Leo Club and Student Council membership (serving as president one year), managing the crosscountry team, three years of National Honor Society participation and serving as Co-President for one year, are among the things that have kept Mickey busy. In addition, her talented participation in numerous plays and musicals has entertained many audiences. Mickey feels that any moment spent together is a memorable one. Thus, her favorite times have been those many moments spent in the company of her small group of classmates who are like extended family to her. To underclassmen, she suggests that the best approach is to try your hardest throughout high school, rather than just at the end. This consistent hard work will pay off greatly when you are applying and going to college. Micheala will be heading to UW-Madison in the fall to study photography and some psychology to help her determine her major field of study. Krabbe's Sportsman's Bar to open Friday It might not look like this place will be open by Friday, June 10th, but Channon Krabbe was determined last Wednesday to make the deadline. Channon and husband Todd will be running the Sportsman's Bar, on Lake Avenue in Crandon, from now on, and have been painting and cleaning at a brisk pace. Stop in, pull up a stool and say hello! This poor bear tangled with a porcupine. It looks painful! The photographer is asking for a volunteer to help him pull the quills. He said he is willing to pull the quills if someone would offer to hold the bear while he did the pulling. Call the Pioneer if you want to be the holder. Forest County Chamber of commerce to host 1st annual shank open Crandon, WI (June 7, 2011)- The Forest County Chamber of Commerce is gearing up for their 1st Annual “Shank Open” Golf Outing scheduled for Friday, June 24 at Nicolet Country Club in Laona. For only $79.00 per person, golfers will enjoy 18 holes of golf with cart, a continental breakfast, lunch and dinner, raffle prizes, hole prizes, and a hole in one event where you'll have a shot at a brand new vehicle. This is a great opportunity to get out and network with other members of the community and support the Chamber. Registration forms can be picked up at The Chamber Office located at 116 South Lake Avenue in Crandon. ` Also, if you are interested in sponsoring a hole, providing something for the goody bags, or donating a prize for the raffle, please contact Melinda at the Chamber office at 715.478.3450 or by email at director@visitforestcounty.com. Boys and girls needed to sell tickets for a shot at Crandon's 4th of July Royalty The Crandon Fire Department is looking for boys and girls to sell tickets for the July 4th Celebration in Crandon. As in the past, whoever sells the most tickets reigns as King or Queen of the celebration. Ages ten through nineteen are eligible. The boy or girl who sells the most tickets will also receive a check for $200, and other cash prizes will be awarded based on the amount of ticket sales and number of entries. The winner will be crowned on Friday night, July 1st, at the street dance that will be held downtown. The winner and the runner-up will have the honor of riding in the parade on Saturday, July 2nd. Entry forms and tickets are available at Flowers From the Heart in downtown Crandon. More details will be forthcoming on the celebration, but in a nutshell, the parade will be at noon on Saturday, July 2nd. The auction will be held after the parade, and the big tent will be set up, so it happens rain or shine. The band 4th Floor will play Saturday night, and fireworks will be as large as ever at Palmer Park, at dusk, on Saturday, July 2nd. Blood Drive to be held in Carter A Forest County Potawatomi Community Blood Drive is being planned on Thursday, June 23 from 12:00 Noon to 4:00 p.m. The blood drive with the Northwoods Community Blood Center will take place at the Wee Care Center on Highway 32 in Carter, next to the Potawatomi Carter Casino. “Our local hospitals depend on the blood given by volunteer donors,” said Jan Hadsell at the blood center. “Many of today's medical treatments involve transfusions of red blood cells, platelets or plasma. These blood components can only be obtained through the generosity of volunteer blood donors.” Advance donation appointments are highly recommended. People may schedule an appointment by calling Yvonne at (715)478-4319, or going to www.save3lives.org. Scheduling an appointment in advance reduces waiting time, keeping the total time required for a donation to less than an hour. Walk-in donors are also welcome. Blood donors must be at least 17 years old (16 with parental permission), weigh at least 110 pounds, be in general good health, and bring a photo ID. Donors are encouraged to eat a regular meal and drink plenty of fluids prior to donating. PIONEER EXPRESS PAGE 2, JUNE 13, 2011 CGS 4th Graders attend WTC The Country Seed 210 E. Anything outside during those times take a beating and the American Flag outside the Sheriff's Department is no exception. The old flag served for a summer and winter, but Mother Nature took its toll and Monday, June 6th, the Veterans of Foreign Wars presented Sheriff John Denee with a beautiful new flag. Sheriff Denee said he noticed that the flags around town don't last long in our climate and it is important that we have presentable flags flying in our town. A, Pickerel, WI 54465 GET RESULTS WITH PIONEER EXPRESS Wabeno Lions honor Senior Citizens and High School Seniors CL ASSIFIEDS! On Friday, April 29, the Wabeno Lions Club hosted its annual Senior Citizen Fish Fry. As guests of the Lions Club, senior citizens from the area gathered at Madonna Hall in Wabeno to visit with friends, to enjoy a fish dinner prepared and served by the Lions Club, and to enjoy entertainment provided by Lions Leo Lamers and Gregg Tallier. The Lions delivered meals to those who were not able to attend the event. The Wabeno Lions, along with the Lakewood McCaslin Lions, also honored Wabeno High School seniors at its 57th annual Senior Banquet. The senior class and their parents, along with their class advisor, other faculty members, and members of the administration and school board enjoyed a chicken dinner prepared by Pichotta's Pub in Wabeno, held in the high school gymnasium. Lion Mike Richmond was master of ceremonies for the event. After the dinner, the group gathered in the auditorium to hear guest speaker Richard Pintsch, a 1968 graduate of Wabeno High School and owner of Pintsch's Hardware in Townsend. Richard talked about the many changes that have occurred over the years since his graduation and reminded the students that despite the small size of Wabeno's high school, they have received an excellent education that will allow them to be and do whatever they set out to do. He said that a key factor will be in how they adjust to the many and sometimes unexpected changes that will occur in their lives. The Wabeno Lion Paul Newton recognized seniors Erika Keller of Lakewood and Brad McLaughlin of Wabeno with the club's annual service awards. Both young people have been actively involved in a variety of volunteer activities that exemplify the Lions motto “We Serve.” Area Events Laona Quarterback Club Annual Golf Tournament Saturday, June 11th, Nicolet Country Club Registration 7:30-9 am Tee Off Time 9 am Entry Fee is $75 person includes 18 holes, lunch, door prize entry, drink tickets, steak dinner and tons of fun! To the Editor: It has come to our attention that the Town of Lincoln is seriously considering including “an area to hold social events” in their new community building. Did we hear correctly? Social events? As taxpayers who feel we're being bled to death for our small cottage on Lake Lucerne, we are outraged that the Town's supervisors would consider spending our tax dollars on building and maintaining a social hall! Two reasons a social hall should not be part of this building project: 1. Duplication of services. Two social halls are currently available for a nominal fee. The Lake Lucerne Association's structure on County W can accommodate 100; for larger gatherings, the city of Crandon has a community center. Additionally, we have been told that Potawatomi tribal members can use Carter's facilities free of charge. 2. Majority of Town of Lincoln's taxpayers are NOT full-time residents. We part-time cottage-dwellers who pay well over half of the Town's taxes have our receptions, showers, and other social gatherings in our hometowns. And, should we have a need in the north woods for a social hall, as mentioned above, there are options available. The Town of Lincoln president and supervisors need to understand that the silent majority who pay the bulk of the Town's taxes cannot drive from Milwaukee, Green Bay, and other surrounding communities to attend the Town's Monday night meetings. So, before a social hall is included in the building plans, poll us. We'll bet our right arms that the majority of the Town's taxpayers say, “No way!” We would, however, sincerely appreciate if supervisors would remember “the hand that feeds” and provide a real service for all our tax dollars like garbage pickup every other week. These letters are the results of a State wide initiative to inventory and place all sanitary systems on a three year inspection regime. This year over 1000 requests were sent out to homeowners in Forest County. Inspections can be performed by a licensed septage operator (pumper), a master plumber, a master plumber restricted sewer, or a POWTS (Private onsite waste treatment system) inspector. Any of the listed professionals can help you comply with this requirement. Inspection reports are due in the Zoning Office by July 31th, 2011. The presence of contaminants does not necessarily indicate that water poses a health risk. More information about contaminants and potential health effects can be obtained by calling the Environmental Protection Agency's safe drinking water hotline (1-800-426-4791). Some people may be more vulnerable to contaminants in drinking water than the general population. Immuno-compromised persons, such as persons with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, persons who have undergone organ transplants, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune systems disorders, some elderly, and infants can be particularly at risk from infections. These people should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers. EPA/CDC guidelines on appropriate means to lessen the risk of infection by cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminants are available from the Environmental Protection Agency's safe drinking water hotline (1-800-426-4791). WABENO SOURCES OF WATER Source Groundwater Groundwater Source id Well #1 Well #2 Status Active Active Depth in Feet 95 feet 157 feet To obtain a summary of the source water assessment, please contact us at the Wabeno Sanitary District 715-473-2905. EDUCATIONAL INFORMATION The sources of drinking water, both tap water and bottled water includes rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs and wells. As water travels over the surface of the land or through the ground, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive material, and can pick up substances resulting from the presence of animals or from human activity. Contaminants that may be present in source water include: • Microbial contaminants, such as viruses and bacteria, which may come from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural livestock operations and wildlife. • Inorganic contaminants, such as salts and metals, which can be naturally occurring or result from urban storm water runoff, industrial or domestic wastewater discharges, oil and gas production, mining or farming. • Pesticides and herbicides, which may come from a variety of sources such as agriculture, urban storm water runoff and residential uses. • Organic chemical contaminants, including synthetic and volatile organic chemicals, which are by-products of industrial processes and petroleum production, and can, also, come from gas stations, urban storm water runoff and septic systems. • Radioactive contaminants, which can be naturally occurring or be the result of oil and gas production and mining activities. In order to ensure that tap water is safe to drink, EPA prescribes regulations that limit the amount of certain contaminants in water provided by public water systems. FDA regulations establish limits for contaminants in bottled water, which shall provide the same protection for public health. NUMBER OF CONTAMINANTS REQUIRED TO BE TESTED This table displays the number of contaminants, which were required to be tested in the last five years. The CCR (Consumers Confidence Report) may contain up to five years worth of water quality results. If a water system tests annually, or more frequently, the results from the most recent year are shown on the CCR. If testing is done less frequently, the results shown on the CCR are from the past five years. (10:52 p.m.) Vet's Corner Looking Back on the Significance of D-Day D- Day Statement by Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs Acting Secretary Donna Williams June 6th marks the anniversary of “D-Day,” referring to the D-Day invasion in Europe in 1944. This year commemorates the 67th anniversary of Operation Overlord, or “D-Day,” when thousands of American and British troops landed on the shores of Normandy with the objective of securing it from Nazi Germany, through additional land and naval support of other Allied nations. The assault, the largest seaborne invasion in history to that time, is considered to be the turning point in the war towards the Allied victory, but it was not without cost. Total Allied casualties on D-Day are estimated at 10,000, including over 2,500 dead. As our World War II veterans of our greatest generation are passing on, Americans look back on the significance of June 6, 1944 and the historical importance of D-Day. More than 330,000 Wisconsin service members served in World War II, with about 37,000 of them alive today; only a certain percentage of them took part in Operation Overlord. The National World War II Memorial on the national mall in Washington, D.C. was dedicated seven years ago, on May 29, 2004. The National Honor Flight Network is bringing World War II veterans and terminally ill veterans to visit the memorial. There are several flight hubs in Wisconsin with future flights being planned. Also in keeping the historical significance alive, the Wisconsin Veterans Museum preserves the materials and memories of all Wisconsin veterans, including those at D-Day, through the Wisconsin Veterans Oral History Project, as well as archives and object collections. Today, let's look back and remember the importance of the heroic invasion 67 years ago on “DDay.” WOUNDED WARRIOR PROJECT PROVIDING FREE TICKETS TO VETERANS FOR CRANDON OFF ROAD RACING SPRING RUN JUNE 18-19, 2011 All Veterans who have proof of service such as a VA ID Card, a DD 214 Military Discharge, Military or Retired Military ID Card, etc., are eligible for a free ticket to the Spring Brush Run. Post 9/11 and all Service Connected Disabled Veterans are encouraged to register for the Wounded Warrior Project benefits which include discounts to many businesses and services, reintegration assistance, employment assistance and support services. Veterans can contact Bryan Shicks, Vets4Vets Peer Support Provider, at 715.889.2483, to get registered by June 14, 2011. Documentation of Military service is required to be placed on the free ticket list register. There is a limited number of tickets for the event. Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) began when several veterans and friends, moved by stories of the first wounded service members returning home from Afghanistan and Iraq, took action to help others in need. What started as a program to provide comfort items to wounded service members has grown into a complete rehabilitative effort to assist warriors as they recover and transition back to back to civilian life. WPS Announces "Service Club Energy Challenge" Green Bay, WI – Wisconsin Public Service (WPS) is challenging the community service clubs in its 19county customer service area in the first ever "WPS Service Club Energy Challenge." Up to twenty selected clubs could earn $1,000 for learning about energy conservation, saving energy at club members' homes and assisting community members in weatherizing their homes. Service clubs must apply before the July 1 deadline. Participating service clubs from northeastern and north central Wisconsin will undergo a qualifying selection process and be notified by July 29. To receive the $1,000 grant, clubs must complete three energy savings tasks. First, install ten home weatherization kits from WPS into ten residences in their community. Second, host an energy conservation presenter at one of their service club meetings. Third, ten club members must pledge to reduce their energy consumption by five percent during the three months of the challenge (September, October, and November 2011) as compared to the same three months of last year. Results will be analyzed by December 23 and the $1,000 grant will be awarded by January 31, 2012. Qualifying community service clubs are 501 (c) (3) organizations whose members organize work or activities intended to improve their local community. Brainworks was born. It is an after school activity to assist students who need extra help with their homework, projects, or studying for tests. Brainworks for elementary is by invitation, while the high school's Brainworks operates on a “come as you please” system. The 4th - 6th graders usually make up the majority of attendees at the elementary end; in general, the junior high are the regulars attending at the upper level. Many athletes seek help to keep grades up for eligibility. Sometimes teachers will see a downfall in grades or have a clue that a student needs some extra help, and will ask that person to attend. This program is scheduled every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30 to 5:30, with a snack and a quick break during this quiet learning environment. Students are permitted iPods and computers if that technology makes work easier. At the elementary, students draw for a prize at the end of each night. A 21st Century grant made the creation of this program possible in 1995. Programming continues today utilizing donations and tax revenue from the school district; however, with proposed funding cuts from the Governor's office, the future of Brainworks is unsure. Until then, teachers and aids continue to provide supervision and assistance for kids who need extra help at the end of the regular school day, hoping for a bright and positive future. Mrs. Sackett will do her best to keep it going. Most plants are right handed. Honeysuckle is one of the few climbing plants that twines to the left. Marian was the first member of her family to graduate high school, making them all very proud. Marian married Clifford Hansen and together they raised a daughter. Marian now has three granddaughters and seven great-grandchildren. While maintaining an organized household and raising her daughter, Marian also held down a full time job. She was a telephone operator for many years. Marian also did housecleaning and even worked in the woods with her husband. Marian always enjoyed cooking and baking; she made her own butter and cottage cheese. Gardening was another one of her specialties. She belonged to many church organizations and The Royal Neighbors of America. Marian is a great storyteller and has many vivid memories of her family and Laona history. There’s a great amount of time spent observing afield, and just plain watching. I have been particularly impressed this year that so many great Canadian Geese have chosen to remain in northern cities, particularly where power stations, water or fast running streams leave some opportunity for them to get a bit wet if they desire. Where I live, to the south, the winter time offers an opportunity to be surrounded by literally thousands of these great birds and flock after flock of them on the wing. We’re by no means restricted to this group of avian species because there’s lots of other bird action. The other day, for example, we were on a driving trip when a red hawk swirled across our windshield and within our sight caught up with a poor sparrow, smothered him in mid air and I assume carried him off for lunch. It did provide a bit of excitement. Under more calm, frequent glances at our feeders reveal a fair variety of birds and when six or eight or twelve cardinals show up, it is indeed quite a sight. We placed our old Christmas tree right in the midst of our feeders. It’s quite amazing how a good part of our birds visitors end up camping in that dead tree. I suppose there are tons of stories about birds like the Christmas tree or the hawk yarn. One of the most interesting just occured on a journey to Florida when my buddy Bill told me there are no sparrows in his state. And you know something, I couldn’t find any either. Truth or not, there were no Florida Sparrows! Yours and stories are everywhere. On WXPR, and I’m sure other stations, there’s a bird lady section. Her yarns are both amusing and interesting. Try her sometime. Their call numbers are 91.7 I believe. We could go on, I’m sure, but the real purpose here is just to call attention to one of life’s real gifts and treasures. I guess you could say, “It’s for the birds!” MEDOW FARMS ORGANICS $1.69 $1.79 $1.69 $2.99 .5 Cu Ft All Purpose Sand $2.89 Bag SAND BOXES, TRACTION AID, BASE FOR PAVERS, CONCRETE MASONRY USES Now Available: * Healthy Garden Plants * Farm Fresh Brown Eggs * Free-Range Broiler Chickens Order Now your FreeRange "Holiday" goose, turkey or duck. (888) 706-4120 (906) 265-4120 PIONEER EXPRESS PAGE 26, June 13, 2011 Wabeno School District Upgrades to Ipads! The Wabeno School District upgraded to ipads for the 2010-2011 school year so the students have easier access to the internet. With purchasing 20 ipads, the cost was around 11,000 dollars. There are 250 applications on them. Mr. Hommerding is the “keeper” of the ipads, which means they are housed in his room and can be checked out by other staff or students. Mr. Hommerding enjoys teaching with the ipads because it engages students in learning and lets them use technologies they are familiar with. He, along with many others believe it's an excellent investment. The only downfalls of having the ipads is if students don't use them appropriately by playing games or going on sites they shouldn't be on. But, since the school has control of what students go on, they are limited on what they can do. Also they're touch screen so the screens get dirty fast, The advantages on having the ipads are they are on at all times so you don't have to wait for them to boot up or load like you do for the computers. And, like I mentioned before they are a source of quicker access to the internet, There are many restrictions for the ipads also. No personal applications, no personal emails, and no going on Facebook or any other sites like that, Everything is filtered through the school so they know what you do, and do not go on. If students are caught on sites they shouldn't be on or miss using them, their privileges are revoked. The students really enjoy having the ipads to work with. Especially the students who use them every day to work on their math abilities! Teacher Leaves After Seven Years By Annie Champine Mr. Ben Hommerding, a special education teacher at Wabeno High School, will be leaving after seven years as a result of staff reductions due to declining enrollment. He said it will be difficult leaving since he's been here for so long and spent a lot of time helping out the community and being a part of many school activities and sports. Mr. Hommerding will be teaching at Winnconne, Wisconsin, next year. He's going to miss the students, athletes he coached, and the staff he worked with at Wabeno High. At Winnconne, he hopes to make a difference and help to improve special education. Mr. Hommerding mentioned he doesn't have a favorite memory at Wabeno, but overall, he tries to leave things better than what they were when he came. His memories were made in that process. Something he'll never forget about is being part of Wabeno High School and getting to know everyone because of the small district. When he took the job, it was temporary so it wasn't a huge surprise that he was leaving. He mentioned the pros and cons of leaving Wabeno. On the positive side, he and his wife are moving to a larger community, and they are city people at heart. This will also give him an opportunity to begin new programming and help out another community and school. A huge negative is leaving a place where he invested seven years of his life, not only in teaching, but also coaching and participating in the community. Driving to Retirement By: Timothy Tarlton If you have been out on the roads around Wabeno before or after school, there is a good chance you passed bus driver, Pat Exferd. Pat has been driving school bus for thirty-nine years and has decided to retire after this year. Over the thirty-nine years that Pat has been driving, she has put on over one million miles! Pat became a bus driver because her kids were in school, and she was able to be home at the same time they were. Her favorite thing about driving a bus is the little kids. They always have big smiles for her and she always enjoys listening to them tell her about their weekends. The kids will be what she will miss the most. Pat has also driven most of the kids' parents! The scariest thing that ever happened to Pat Exferd while she was driving was three or four years ago, when her bus started to slide down a hill. Pat spun sideways in the road and hit a snow bank. After the accident, Pat had to call for help. The truck that came to pull her out started to slide down the road at her. The funniest incident that happened to Pat while driving was when a radiator hose blew. Pat had to call for a back-up bus. Later that night a mother called her and asked what happened. Pat explained the story to her. The mom listened and replied, “Okay, because my daughter said you couldn't drive the bus because the radio was broken.” Pat's favorite time of year to drive is definitely not winter. “I have been in the ditch many times; winters used to be worse than they are now.” She likes the fall because she enjoys talking to the kids after they come back from summer vacation. Pat says that she thinks Wabeno School District is a great place to work! Pat's advice for future bus drivers is to have a good sense of humor, be understanding, and like kids; the rest will fall into place. Amy Vaclav chosen as "Educator of Excellence" in Wabeno The Wabeno Education Association has chosen Wabeno Science Teacher, Amy Vaclav, as their Educator of Excellence for the 2010-2011 school year. The Educator of Excellence Award is sponsored by the Nicolet/Oconto Retired Teachers Association and it's parent organization, the Wisconsin Retired Educators Association. It is presented annually to teachers who, as determined by their local Education Association, demonstrate exceptional teaching abilities and innovative programs. Pictured are: Dick Lowery, Nicolet/Oconto Retired Teachers Association representative, and Amy Vaclav, award recipient. The Retirement Plan By: Nicholas Ward Mr. Earl Blankenheim, a long-time teacher at Wabeno High School, announced his retirement effective the end of this year. The original “retirement plan” was to stay another year, but he decided to retire this year instead. Mr. Blankenheim has been teaching for thirtythree years, all of them here at WHS. He started teaching in August 1978 as a K-12 Learning Disabilities teacher. Later he started the EBD program in grades 7-12. He earned both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from UW-Oshkosh. “What inspired me to pursue teaching is that I wanted school to be different than the way that I had experienced it. No kid leaves my classroom without some kind of affirmation, even on the days when we don't agree with each other,” Mr. Blankenheim said. He also shared that he had taught everything except drivers education, even a college class, and his favorite classes to teach are civics and math. During his time here at Wabeno, Mr. Blankenheim has taught multiple generations within some families. What will Mr. Blankenheim do now that he is retiring? He will probably fish and hunt more often, go and help his son on the farm, join the retired teachers association, or try a job different than the ones he had before he started teaching. He had many jobs before he began his career as a teacher: bakery worker, semi driver, and even barber. Mr. Blankenheim enjoyed the time here at Wabeno because it's the best career he's had and he has gotten to know and help so many kids. His advice to the teacher who will be replacing him is, “You must like the students, but you are not their friend. Remember that you are the teacher, and more importantly, that failure is not an option.” It's possible Mr. Blankenheim may return as a substitute teacher, as he is going to miss teaching at Wabeno High School. Some wish that he would stay. “I have never had a job I didn't like,” Mr. Blankenheim concluded. Farewell Mr. Blankenheim, and have a happy retirement. Wabeno Special Education Teacher, Mrs. Ashbeck, Moves On Wabeno High School National Honor Society Induction Wabeno Compost Bin By Jordan Smith Wabeno High School is continuing its attempt to “go green” with its newest project: a compost bin. The compost bin will be used to recycle waste product from the school's kitchen, lawn extracts, and leaves to make nutrient-rich soil for the Prairie Restoration Project. Students from Wabeno Area School District constructed the bin, and will maintain it regularly. Pintsch's Hardware donated half the materials to build the compost bin. Kroll's Excavating and Boney Stone and Boulder contributed materials to extend the Prairie Restoration Project. program. The 2011 NHS inductees have met the requirements of junior or senior status, cumulative GPA of 3.5 out of 4.0, and high standards of leadership, citizenship, service in the community, and character. Wabeno High School's National Honor Society induction ceremony for 2011 took place on Sunday, May 22nd at 5 p.m. The ceremony was held at Waubee Lake Lodge in Lakewood. This year's student inductees include: Marissa Bartels, Jordan Demmith, Stephanie Harris, Heather Huettl, Erica Keller, Derek Loch, Kathryn Lowery, Marissa Popp, Kim Spreeman, and Cassidi St. Perer. The guest speaker for the ceremony was Kathie Marsh. By Kim Spreeman The National Honor Society ranks as one of the oldest and most prestigious national organizations for high school students. National Honor Society is recognized in more than 15,000 schools, and, since 1921, millions of students have been accepted into this By Nate Mortson Miss Cheri Ashbeck has worked for the Wabeno School District for the past two years, but will move on to another position next fall. Miss Ashbeck is known as a helpful and caring teacher to her students. She always tries to make teaching and learning fun and tries to “switch it up” all the time. Students take special trips such as swimming, Special Olympics, and other similar events. Becoming a teacher was something Miss Ashbeck always knew she wanted to do. When she was in college, she chose the field of special education after watching people with special needs in the educational environment. That's when she fell in love with seeing them learn new skills to better their life. It took her five years to complete her degree, with a double major at UW-Stout. Wabeno is her first job since college. She enjoys teaching Cont. on page 20 PIONEER EXPRESS PAGE 27, JUNE 13, 2011 NEW 2010 FORD F150 4X4, CREW CAB, LARIAT PLATINUM PACKAGE Choose from 2! BRAND NEW! But how do you know if your expectations are reasonable or over the top? Think short term and long term when deciding how many pounds you want to shed. A reduction of 5 to 10 pounds may be a good start and can bring great health benefits. For the long haul, getting your body mass index (BMI) to a healthy level might be a good target. Take into account your fitness level, health concerns and available time to devote to weight loss. You may need your health care provider’s help. Be realistic about how fast you can lose the weight. A loss of about 1-2 pounds a week is best for most. To do this you will need to take off 500-1,000 calories per day by eating less and exercising more. Evaluate your goals weekly. Make changes if you need to, and remember that roadblocks and setbacks are normal. Plan for success...and for occasional setbacks.
