Ford (CVN 78) Scouts to Participate in Christening an Aircraft Carrier Submitted by Mike Walsh On Saturday, November 9, 2013, Newport News Shipbuilding will christen the nation's newest aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) during a ceremony on-site where the ship is being constructed. President Gerald R. Ford was the 38th President of the United States. His daughter, Susan Ford Bales, will serve as the ship's sponsor, performing the traditional honor of breaking a bottle of American sparkling wine across the ship's bow during the ceremony. This is both a significant milestone in naval shipbuilding and historical at the same time; as the Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) is the first of a new class of aircraft carriers, the first new design since USS Nimitz, which was launched in 1972. This will be a very special event for Boy Scouts of America as well since President Ford is the only Eagle Scout to be President. To commemorate this accomplishment we have selected 5 Colonial Virginia Council Eagle Scouts to serve as honorary Color Guard at the ceremony. Aaron Whitehead -Troop 306; Joseph Hamilton - Troop 275; Christopher Dobyns – Troop 303; Brady Reisch - Troop 226; and Nicholas Adams – Troop 6 will be featured at the opening of the ceremony carrying the National, State, and the BSA Council flags before an audience expected to number in the thousands. They will be recognized from the dais and will be covered by a Live Webcast of the event that you may view at www.theFordClass.com streaming at 11:00 am on November 9th . Scouts from the Colonial Virginia Council have assisted at other Shipyard ceremonies over the years in handing out flags, programs, and helping to assist with ushering the VIP guests as elevator operators; but this time the Scouts will be part of the official program. The program includes a processional of 78 US flags (for CVN 78 the Navy ship designation) to be carried by Scouts and Scouters from both the Colonial Virginia Council and Tidewater Council; and a large contingent from Michigan representing the President Gerald R Ford Council, BSA http://cvcboyscouts.doubleknot.com/CMS/PageViewer.aspx?PageID=12963&preview=yes[11/7/2013 4:41:10 PM] in Grand Rapids vicinity of Michigan. Bob Dawson from Troop 316 in Holland Michigan has a Wood Badge ticket he is working to complete. He has arranged for a chartered bus trip to Newport News sponsored by Troop 43 arriving on Friday in time to visit the Army Transportation Museum at Ft Eustis and The Mariner’s Museum. After the Christening ceremony ends and they lunch at the Shipyard, the Michigan bus heads to our Council camp at Bayport Scout Reservation where they will be treated to a tour of the camp and get to witness the afternoon “Pumpkin Chunkin” event. Camp Staff will serve them dinner before the bus heads back for the fourteen hour bus trip to Michigan. Commemorative council service patch commissioned by the Shipyard for just this event.. Update! They explored and identified wildlife, poisonous plants and discovered unique habitats while hiking along the trail. They practiced their observation skills and became a “Naturalist” while exploring and understanding that wetlands are valuable lands that support a rich biodiversity of waterfowl, songbirds, turtles, frogs, fish, and other wildlife. They understand that salt marshes occur along our coastal areas and which are dominated by salt-tolerant plants like cord grass and are greatly influenced by tides. Among our most productive wildlife habitats, salt marshes are important feeding and nursery areas for fish, shellfish, crabs, and waterfowl. The Webelos Scouts also studied the four basic parts of any ecosystem, whether aquatic or terrestrial, are: • A biotic (nonliving) substances (mainly inorganic and organic compounds), • Producers (largely green plants), • Consumers (animals), and • Decomposers (bacteria and fungi).Plants, animals, decomposers, and organics are interdependent with one another. The Webelos Scouts day would not have been complete until they had their close up encounter with “King” which is a King Snake. They learned that this snake is widespread in the Coastal Plain and Piedmont of Virginia. It also occurs in the Potomac River drainage in northern Virginia west of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It inhabits a variety of different habitats, including hardwood forest, mixed pine-hardwood forest, pine forest, abandoned fields, margins of hardwood swamps and freshwater marshes, and along creeks and streams. We would like to give a big “Thank you” to Ms. Katherine and the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center for this opportunity.
