NAIDOC Day
Uncle Mark Flanders with our students
Mullaway Primary School celebrated NAIDOC Week with a
focus day on Tuesday, June 23rd.
The focus day was integrated with our Peer Support
program with group rotations participating in; boomerang
artwork, tasting bush tucker prepared by Sue Tomkins,
dreamtime stories with Aunty Ange, hunting and
indigenous games and a bush tucker walk with Uncle Mark
Flanders.

Central Network Dance Festival
The annual Central Network Dance Festival was held in the
evening of Thursday, June 18th in Coffs Harbour and
Mullaway Primary School had two entries; our 3-6 Dance
Troupe and our K-2 Dance Troupe.

Miss Eichmann’s 3-6 Dance Troupe performed an upbeat
routine to Bruno Mars’ Uptown Funk whilst Mrs. Athorn’s
K-2 Dance Troupe was certainly one of the audience’s
favourite for the evening, particularly our male
saxophonists.

Chelsea Watson-Sinclair, our School Captain was one of
the comperes during the evening, stepping up to the role
which is usually reserved for High School Captains. Well
done Chelsea, you did a fantastic job, calm and confident
throughout the evening!
Thank you to all of the staff and parents who supported
the evening. In particular, I would like to acknowledge
Miss Eichmann and Mrs. Athorn for their commitment in
choreographing, costuming and coordinating two excellent
dance routines.

Our four representatives were the finalists of our intraschool competition held in Term 1; Kai Nudd, Quinn
Watson, Dayne Watson-Sinclair and Leevon Young.
Each student had to present a prepared speech followed
by an impromptu speech.
Kai and Quinn, our Stage 3 competitors presented a
speech on Learning Languages and Refugees respectively
and their impromptu topic was Facing Problems.
Dayne and Leevon, our Stage 2 competitors presented a
speech on Bullying and Racism and Every Family Has A
Story respectively and their impromptu topic was Against
The Rules.
Well done to our public speaking foursome!
Mullaway Primary School, one of the smallest schools in
the competition, has a proud record of students placing in
the top three. This is largely due to our public speaking and
debating initiatives led by Mr. King and a team of talented
and committed teachers.

Multicultural Public Speaking Competition
Congratulations to Kai Nudd who was the Stage 3 winner
for the Coffs Harbour / Clarence 20th Multicultural
Perspectives Public Speaking Competition held at
Westlawn Public school on Wednesday, June 17th.
Congratulations also to Leevon Young who received a
Highly Commended (2nd place) for the Stage 2
competition.
We welcome Allissah (Year 2), Markus (Year 2), Lillee (Year 4) and
Charlotte (Kindergarten) who started at Mullaway this week.
Green Canteen Term 3 Menu
students had to not only complete the mathematics
questions with 100% accuracy but also do fitness activities
such as; bench dips, tuck jumps and burpees, in between
doing the number problems.
Well done to Dayne Watson-Sinclair our Stage 2 winner
and the overall winner, Carolyn Kearns, our Stage 1 winner
and Kai Nudd, our Stage 3 winner. Thank you to Miss.
Eichmann who coordinated the Times Tables Terminator
challenge.
Kids in the Kitchen
Our Green Canteen
Our Term 3 Menu will start on Thursday, July 16th
(Wednesday, July 15th is our Athletics Carnival).
Our Green Canteen menu just keeps getting greener! The
Term 3 menu will include pizzas, quiches, sausage rolls,
fried rice and spaghetti, all freshly made, and sugar,
preservative and additive free. We will also see, in our
Afternoon menu, healthy snack options (Mullaway
Munchies) such as carob buttons, dried nuts and fruits, soy
crisps and cheddar cheese and biscuits, which are vacuumsealed and packaged by our canteen volunteers.
Wherever possible, our volunteers’ source produce locally.
I would like to acknowledge our fabulous canteen
committee; Davina, Tina, Rebecca, Haley and Julie who are
committed to our students having the opportunity to eat a
diverse range of healthy and fresh foods.

Year 5 students with local chef and Mullaway father Jo Fallon
Kids in the Kitchen returned to Mullaway on Monday, June
15th and this term we made corn and pumpkin soup, flat
bread and fresh orange juice.
Thank you to all our parent and community volunteers, the
success of our Kids in the Kitchen initiative is due to the
wonderful support that we receive.
Thank you also to our teachers, who show great passion
and commitment to ensure that our Kids in the Kitchen
program is constantly evolving and improving.

Staffing Term 3 at Mullaway
We wish Mr. King all the best in Term 3 as the relieving
Principal at Tucabia Public School. Miss Hills will be the
relieving Assistant Principal at Mullaway Primary School
during Mr. King’s secondment. Mrs. James (formerly Miss
McPherson) will be our Year 6 teacher during Term 3.
We farewell Mrs. Athorn, our librarian! Mrs. Athorn will be
teaching full-time at Woolgoolga Public School from Term
3. I would like to acknowledge Mrs. Athorn’s contribution
to Mullaway this year, in particular with our Book Fair and
our wonderful K-2 dance troupe, who performed at the
Central Network Dance Festival last week.
We welcome Miss. Nichols who will be our new librarian
for the remainder of 2015.
Our Term 2 Terminators; Dayne, Carolyn and Kai
Our Term 2 Times Tables Terminator was held on Tuesday,
June 23rd. This term there was a new format in which the

Working Bee 2
We had fabulous community support for the second stage
of our working bee, which was held on Sunday, June 14th.
It involved the completion of our sensory garden, the
construction of our sustainable garden beds and the new
planting of our fruit trees.

Thank you to Gareth and Lisa Owen, the owners of Big
Garden Furniture and former Mullaway Primary School
parents, who have generously donated a beautiful solid
timber picnic bench for our new Sensory Garden.
The picnic bench compliments our solid timber bench seat
which is also from Big Garden Furniture.
Our students and the Mullaway School community
appreciate the support from our local business supplier.
The Sensory garden was completed by our teachers; Kathy
Gray and David King, the Wells family, the Nudd family, the
Corbett family and Deane Frost. Darren Gray was on the
machines the entire day, digging holes, clearing and chain
sawing.
Adam Sinclair, David King and Matt Batty cemented our
sustainable garden poles. Thank you to Matt Batty who
donated over $100 worth of extra cement to get the job
done on the day!
P&C BBQ
Our P&C held a sausage sizzle outside the new Woolgoolga
Woolworths on Saturday, June 13th, selling 192 sausage
sandwiches and raising over $350.00 for our school.

Thank you Rebecca, Chelsea, Dayne, Haley and Julie
Thank you to our wonderful parent volunteers; Rebecca,
Julie, Haley and to our hardworking student volunteers;
Chelsea (our school captain) and her brother Dayne.
We also appreciate the generous support of our
Woolgoolga Woolworth's management team; Matt,
Andrew and Nikki.
We now have thirteen fruit trees planted in our new
orchard thanks to Mark Garrett, Deane Frost, Josh Corbett,
Adam Sinclair and Haley Watson who planted, mulched
and watered in the new trees.
Rebecca Woodrow and Chelsea Watson-Sinclair kept the
troops watered and fed throughout the day.
Thank you again to the Watson-Sinclair family, Batty
family, Corbett family, Wells family, Nudd family, Gray
family, David King, Mark Garrett, Deane Frost and Rebecca
Woodrow. A wonderful achievement!
Winter Vacation
This Friday is the last day of Term 2 and students will be
receiving their mid-year reports. We wish all our students
a safe and relaxing holiday

Road safety - Your child’s safety
depends on you
When Driving:
Make sure your children are in an appropriate
child car seat that is fitted and used correctly.
Make a rule that every child passenger must be securely
buckled into a seatbelt or child car seat before you start
the car.
A sleeping child must remain firmly buckled up while
the car is in motion.
When riding on the footpath, cyclists must keep to the
left and give way to pedestrians. Children need to take
special care at driveways where vehicles may be driving
in or out. At intersections, children must dismount and
wheel the bicycle across the road as a pedestrian,
following the ‘STOP ! LOOK ! LISTEN ! THINK !’
procedure.
Remember, drive safe - our child’s safety depends on
you!
Always give way to pedestrians particularly
when entering and leaving driveways.
It’s safest for children to get out of the car
on the kerb side of the road to be away
from passing traffic.
When Walking:
Always hold your child’s hand. Children need your help
to spot dangers such as vehicles coming out
of driveways. They can also be easily distracted
and wander into traffic.
Talk with your children about Stop, Look,
Listen and Think every time they cross the road.
STOP! one step back from the kerb.
LOOK! for traffic to your right left and right again.
LISTEN! for the sounds of approaching traffic.
THINK! whether it is safe to cross.

When Cycling or Using Scooters, Skateboards or
Rollerblades
Your child must wear a helmet when riding a
bike in any public place – it’s the law.
Your child’s helmet must comply with the Australian
and New Zealand Standards. It must be securely fitted
and fastened on their head.
Check that your child wears a bicycle helmet
whenever playing or riding on wheels – bikes, foot
scooters, rollerskates, skateboards or rollerblades. The
helmet should be firmly buckled so it fits without
wobbling or slipping to the sides. It must protect the
forehead.
Although children quickly learn to pedal, steer
and brake, they are not ready to cycle near traffic or
on the road.
Children under 12 and adult riders accompanying
and supervising them may ride on the footpath, unless
there are signs specifically prohibiting cycling.

many opportunities that children are allowed
to eat ‘sometimes’ foods.
Try to think about some healthier options that
you could serve at your next child’s party.

 toasted Lebanese bread and vegie

Our school is participating in the Amart Community
Kickbacks Program. Under this program, the school can
earn 5% of your purchases at Amart All Sports as instore
credit to spend on our school sports programs. All you
need to do is join Team Amart, select our school from
the list of participating groups and swipe your loyalty
card every time you make a purchase at Amart All
