Priscilla A PUBLICATION OF THE WOMEN`S REPUBLICAN CLUB
THE Trunkline A PUBLICATION OF THE WOMEN’S REPUBLICAN CLUB OF NAPLES FEDERATED www.wrc-naples.com AUGUST 2015 Letter from WRC - President Dear WRC Members, The presidential primary campaigning officially began last evening with the “Voters First Forum” in New Hampshire. Although the various candidates have been actively pursuing voters in NH, Iowa and SC as these states have the earliest primaries, last evening’s Forum allowed almost all of the candidates an equal opportunity to answer voters’ questions. Many pundits, rightly so, compared the format to “speed dating.” In my opinion, FOX’s format for the 1st Presidential Debate is flawed because it doesn’t allow all of the candidates the same platform. It relegates 7 candidates to a “2nd tier.” How much better would it have been to split the candidates into 2 groups by drawing numbers out of a hat and then having two, back to back primetime debates? Alas, I was not in charge of organizing this debate! On another note, School Board members Erika Donalds and Kelly Lichter need our support. The Dems do not want to lose control of the School Board. To that end, they have established an active campaign to oppose anything and everything Erika and Kelly suggest or would like to be considered. For example, they would like the Board to have its own attorney. Presently, the attorney reports to and is supervised by the Superintendant, including completion of his performance evaluation. How can he properly represent the Board’s concerns or issues that the Superintendant opposes when his job performance evaluation is determined by the Superintendant? There is obviously a conflict of interest. The Dems , including members of the ACLU and teachers’ union, attend School Board meetings in great numbers. It would be a tremendous support to Erika and Kelly if more of us were present to support them. The next meeting is Tuesday, August 11th at 5:00pm. Let’s show the Dems that conservative principles and values are what made this country strong and what our students need! Many of you have asked about photos taken at the various WRC and CCREC events. Photographer Darren Miles has memorialized recent events,. Evans - Immediate Past President - susandevans@gmail.com Obama Defies Congress by Going to UN on Iran Deal by: Fred Fleitz Even though the Corker-Cardin bill (the Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act) gives Congress 60 days to review the new nuclear agreement with Iran, the U.N. Security Council approved the agreement this morning (July 27, 2015) by passing a U.S.-drafted resolution. I believe this was a tactical error by the Obama administration which will significantly increase congressional opposition to the Iran deal. Obama officials have tried to downplay the significance of the Security Council vote by claiming the Iran agreement won’t be implemented for 90 days, which will give Congress 60 days to review it. There were bipartisan calls for the Security Council vote to be delayed until after Congress reviewed the deal. Republican Sen. Bob Corker and Democratic Sen. Ben Cardin, the chairman and ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, sent a letter to President Obama that said voting on the Iran deal before Congress reviewed it “would be contrary to your statement that “it’s important for the American people and Congress to get a full opportunity to review this deal . . . our national security policies are stronger and more effective when they are subject to the scrutiny and transparency that democracy demands.” Sen. Ted Cruz is livid over the Security Council vote. He said in a July 16 letter to President Obama: “It seems your administration intended all along to circumvent this domestic review. That [U.N. Ambassador] Samantha Power has already introduced a draft resolution to the Security Council portrays an offensive level of disrespect for the American people and their elected representatives in Congress.” The chief U.S. negotiator in the talks, Wendy Sherman, dismissed calls for the U.N. vote to be delayed when she told reporters last week that "It would have been a little difficult when all of the [countries negotiating with Iran] wanted to go to the United Nations to get an endorsement of this, since it is a product of the United Nations process, for us to say, 'Well, excuse me, the world, you should wait for the United States Congress.'" Yesterday on ABC’s “The Week,” Secretary of State John Kerry responded to congressional demands that the Security Council vote be delayed by saying, “It’s presumptuous of some people to suspect that France, Russia, China, Germany, Britain ought to do what the Congress tells them to do. They have a right to have a vote.” According to The New York Times, Kerry wanted Security Council consideration of the Iran deal delayed until after Congress reviewed it but “he ran into a wall of opposition from Iran, Russia, and even the United States’ closest European allies, who argued successfully that Security Council action should come first.” Make no mistake: Today’s Security Council vote flouted Corker-Cardin since it approved the Iran deal and the lifting U.N. sanctions against Iran regardless of what Congress does. And don’t be fooled by reports that the Obama administration tried to convince other parties in the talks to delay the U.N. vote. Iran succeeded in inserting a condition into the nuclear agreement that part of the deal required approval by the Iranian parliament. I have no doubt the Obama administration could have delayed U.N. approval of the Iran deal if it wanted to. The arrogant statements by Kerry and Sherman about the right of other countries to vote on this agreement in the U.N. before the U.S. Congress reviews it will further anger Congress. There is growing bipartisan opposition to the Iran deal as members of Congress discover this agreement will shorten the timeline to an Iranian nuclear weapon, has extremely weak verification provisions and and will provide Iran with billions in sanctions relief that it likely will use to fund terrorist groups, the Assad regime, and other efforts to destabilize the Middle East. Congress is also under strong pressure from pro-Israel and Jewish groups such as the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, the Combined Jewish Philanthropies in Boston, the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, and the Zionist Organization of America to reject the Iran deal. It will still be an uphill battle for Congress to reject the Iran deal under Corker-Cardin since a veto-proof majority will be needed for a “resolution of disapproval.” However, the Obama administration’s refusal to defer to the Corker-Cardin bill by delaying the Security Council vote is such an affront to Congress that it may cause Democratic fence-sitters to oppose the deal. A LITTLE GUN HISTORY DON'T THINK FOR A MOMENT, THAT THIS COULDN'T HAPPEN IN OUR COUNTRY ALSO !!!!!! In 1929, the Soviet Union established gun control: From 1929 to 1953, about 20 million dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated. ----------------------In 1911, Turkey established gun control: From 1915 to 1917, 1.5 million Armenians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated. ----------------------Germany established gun control in 1938: From 1939 to 1945, a total of 13 million Jews and others who were unable to defend themselves were rounded up and exterminated. ----------------------China established gun control in 1935: From 1948 to 1952, 20 million political dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated. ----------------------Guatemala established gun control in 1964: From 1964 to 1981, 100,000 Mayan Indians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated. ----------------------Uganda established gun control in 1970: From 1971 to 1979, 300,000 Christians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated. ----------------------Cambodia established gun control in 1956: From 1975 to 1977, one million educated people, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated. ----------------------56 million defenseless people were rounded up and exterminated in the 20th Century because of gun control. ----------------------You won't see this data on the US evening news, or hear politicians disseminating this information. • Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property. • And, yes, gun-control laws adversely affect only the law-abiding citizens. • With guns, we are 'citizens,’ without them, we are 'subjects.' • During WW II, the Japanese decided not to invade America because they knew most Americans were ARMED! • Gun owners in the USA are the largest armed forces in the World! • If you value your freedom, please spread this anti-gun control message to all of your friends. • The purpose of fighting is to win. There is no possible victory in defense. • The sword is more important than the shield and skill is more important than either. SWITZERLAND ISSUES A GUN TO EVERY HOUSEHOLD! SWITZERLAND'S GOVERNMENT ISSUES AND TRAINS EVERY ADULT IN THE USE OF A RIFLE. SWITZERLAND HAS THE LOWEST GUN RELATED CRIME RATE OF ANY CIVILIZED COUNTRY IN THE WORLD!!! IT'S A NO BRAINER! DON'T LET OUR GOVERNMENT WASTE MILLIONS OF OUR TAX DOLLARS IN AN EFFORT TO MAKE ALL LAW-ABIDING CITIZENS AN EASY TARGET. CONUNDRUMS The definition of the word Conundrum is: something that is puzzling or confusing. Here are six Conundrums of socialism in the United States of America : 1. America is capitalist and greedy - yet half of the population is subsidized. 2. Half of the population is subsidized - yet they think they are victims. 3. They think they are victims - yet their representatives run the government. 4. Their representatives run the government - yet the poor keep getting poorer. 5. The poor keep getting poorer - yet they have things that people in other Countries only dream about. 6. They have things that people in other countries only dream about yet they want America to be more like those other countries. Think about it! And that, my friends, pretty much sums up the USA in the 21st Century. Thoughts to Ponder Over Morning Cup of Coffee 1. Americans are advised to NOT judge ALL Muslims by the actions of a few lunatics, but we are encouraged to judge ALL gun owners by the actions of a few lunatics. 2. Seems Americans constantly hear about how Social Security is going to run out of money. But we never hear about welfare or food stamps running out of money? What's interesting is the first group "worked for" their money, but the second didn't. 3. Why are we cutting benefits for our veterans, no pay raises for our military and cutting our army back, but we are not stopping the payments or benefits to illegal aliens, and foreign aid. "A gun is like a parachute. If you need one, and don't have one, you'll probably never need one again." You don’t want to miss out on the fun!! 2015 FFRW Biennial Convention October 9-11, 2015 Orlando, Florida About seven WRC members attended the last Biennial Convention and we had a fabulous time. There were outstanding speakers including Michelle Malkin and KCarl Smith, along with Gov. Rick Scott. In addition, it was a great opportunity to meet with and to get know our fellow Republican Federated Women from across the state. This Convention is extremely important as state officers will be elected. FFRW must elect qualified and competent officers as 2016 not only includes the presidential election, but also a US Senatorial election to fill Sen. Marco Rubio’s seat, which he is vacating to run for president. Because of the number of WRC members, WRC is entitled to at least 12 voting delegates. The official “call to convention” will be 45 days before the start of the Convention. However, hotel reservations can be made now. The Doubletree at the entrance to the Universal Gate will be the host hotel. Room rates are $99.00 per night and parking is $8.00 per day (valet $16.00). This rate will be good from the 6th through the 14th for those who would like to extend their time in Orlando. Below is the link for the POG Page for reservations or you can call 1-800-327-2110 and the Group Code is FFR. http://doubletree.hilton.com/en/dt/groups/personalized/M/MCOUNDT-FFR-20151006/index.jhtml?WT.mc_id=POG Hotel rooms can be shared and we can caravan it up to Orlando depending upon the number of WRC members wanting to attend the Convention. If you are interested in being a delegate for the 2015 FFRW Biennial Convention in Orlando, please send me an email (pwgrannis@comcast.net) so that I can provide you with the registration paperwork once it is available. As many of you already know, Seattle is pretty much the birthplace of the $15.00 per hour minimum wage. When the concept was being "discussed" a few years ago, many folks warned about unintended consequences; and, as they say, those chickens continue to come home to roost. Seattle Employees Ask for Reduced Hours So That Jacked-Up Minimum Wage Won’t Cost Them Subsidized Housing By jacking up minimum wage, Seattle has provided a valuable lesson in liberal economics. The plan has now backfired. Nora Gibson, the executive director of Full Life Care, told KIRO 7 that she saw a sudden reaction from workers when Seattle's phased minimum-wage ordinance took effect in April, bringing minimum wage to $11 an hour. She said anecdotally, some people feared they would lose their subsidized housing so they have asked that their work hours be reduced to remain eligible for all government subsidies. It doesn't stop at $11/hour. The law puts it up to $15 starting January 1, 2017. They will have to reduce their work hours even more to remain eligible for handouts. Good thing the minimum wage wasn't raised even higher as most would not work at all. They prefer to be spoon fed and remain on the government plantation. Remember free market capitalism? Under that system, the harder and smarter you worked, the higher your standard of living. But that was found to result in income inequality, so now we have a system where wealth is bestowed by bureaucrats, and working harder doesn't always make sense.
