St. Luke the Evangelist Church May 24, 2015 Pentecost Sunday Dear Parishioners: As many of you probably saw last weekend, there is a slate of seven candidates for the Parish Council election (for four seats), that will be conducted at the Masses next weekend. Please make sure to take the time to get a flyer with the candidates’ biographies and information, and prayerfully choose whom you think would be the best four candidates for our parish to serve St. Luke in this capacity. With summer’s heat coming on, it’s time for the annual reminder to all of you about appropriate dress in church, men and women. If one attempts to visit the American cemetery in Normandy or Brittany and is not properly attired, that person is denied entrance to the cemetery and memorial. That’s a cemetery, and the regulations are there. Try going to Antoine’s Restaurant in New Orleans without proper attire, and you might get pushed out the door. That’s a restaurant, and they have held their dress code for over 170 years. What we have in church is even more important, because we come face to face, sacramentally speaking, with the living God. Now I’m not going to mandate what you should wear, but since we are encountering Jesus every week, it stands to reason that young or old, rich or poor, we ought to be able to put on our best for God. From the negative side of things, if someone isn’t properly covered, they can become a distraction (al least) or on occasion of sinful thought (at worst), for the people in the pew around them. We need to consider these things when preparing for our weekly (or daily) encounter with the Lord in the Eucharist. Thanks for your attention to this, and to making what changes you may need to make in this regard. I have been consistent in informing you of the level of our debt when we had it, and how much further we had to go on retiring it. Since that debt has been paid off, it seems reasonable to let you know what we now have in savings with the Archdiocese. As of this writing, we have just over $54,000 on deposit, which I have earmarked for the church roof repairs. I have been in contact with the Building Office and will be meeting soon with the directors to come inspect our church roof, and start the process of contractor’s bidding on it for us. I’ll keep you informed of developments here as they arise. God bless you all, Father Pat St. Luke Church Office will be closed on Monday, May 25th Memorial Day Holiday Responsible stewardship is the obligation of all Catholics. Thank you for your continued support of St. Luke Parish, Good Sams and various other collections.
