A Kaleidoscope of Experiences
By VDG Carleen Rajala
Kudos to DG Bev Greenwood’s District Convention Co-Chairs PDG Thelma Brown and RC “Mo” Greenwood for providing a
kaleidoscope of activities and experiences for the Lions of District 17-A!
International Director Mike Molenda updated local Lions on LCI. He encouraged District Lions by quoting Vince Lombardi who
said in the “Drive to achieve perfection (one) achieves excellence”. IP Molenda’s style was informative and friendly. It was apparent that is why his motto is Service+Fun=Lions.” He definitely set the tone for the convention.
Senator Jerry Moran, also a Lion, spoke to the qualities of working hard, looking after neighbors and serving the community--all aspects of our motto “We Serve”.
Since only 2% of the population is directly related to feeding the population, many of us did not know of the constant behind
the scene battles for the safety of our livestock in Kansas. State Veterinarian Dr. Lewann Schneider provided an overview of the
diseases and efforts to control them.
Lion Linda, wife of I.D. Mike Molenda, used her own experience with a heart attack to remind Lions that heart attacks are “Not
for the Ladies Only and certainly Not for the Men”. Because she was in denial about her symptoms, she wants to warn others to
take them seriously.
Other topics addressed include the creation of a new type of cyber Lions Club using the Miami County Traveling Lions Club as
an example, a review of LCI‘s internet resources by Lion Steve Everley, an overview of “Cattails” complete with furry friends, and
previews of both the State Convention in Lawrence and International Convention in Hawaii. Lions also had an opportunity to meet
and offer support to our International Director Candidate Bill Phillipi and his wife Lion Vickie.
If one is a fan of music and the arts, there were several opportunities to enjoy them. Friday night’s “Sisters of Hope” concert
appealed to Lions of all ages. Those who love to sing themselves were delighted to join in singing 5 songs. The display of this
year’s Peace Posters in the halls brought art to all attendees. Theme baskets also provided an artistic outlet while earning over
$800 to purchase books for distribution with vision screening.
“Fun”d-raising over the week-end included the annual PDG Pound Auction. It provided fun, frivolous gifts and funds (about
$1600 for scholarships).
What? No business? All of the business was completed in the one hour time allotment for the District Cabinet meeting and
District Convention. Congratulations to the 2015-16 District Officers and new Foundation members
The convention reminds one of the song “Something for everyone”. Great job Convention Team!!

It’s not too late to …“HOP ON THE ROAD TO 50 YEARS” WITH LCIF!!
In 2018, Lions Clubs International Foundation will become 50 years old! In order to celebrate the upcoming birthday, the Lions
of Kansas are being asked to commit to “The Road to 50 Years”.
How does “The Road to 50 Years” work? You commit to donating $10 during the 2013/2014, year, $20 during 2014/2015, $30
during 2015/2016, $40 during 2016/2017, and then $50 for the 2017/2018 year.** Not only will this help LCIF continue to support its many projects, but it increases the donations made to LCIF by Kansans. Just because you may have missed last year,
doesn’t mean you can’t still participate. Just sign up this year with your $20.00 pledge!!
Besides feeling great for making your donation to LCIF, there are benefits for you too!
You may choose to have certain donations count toward contributing member pins, or toward a Melvin Jones Fellowship. All five
years of donations can count toward a Melvin Jones Fellowship, OR, for your $20, $30 & $40 donation you can receive that year’s
bronze contributing member pin, and for your $50 donation you can receive that year’s silver contributing member pin. And
remember, you can always give more!
In addition to the individual donations, we are adding a CLUB portion this year. We are asking each club to donate a minimum of
$250.00 a year for the next four years. At the end of the four years, you will have enough to name a Melvin Jones Fellow. We
will then have a special Melvin Jones Fellowship presentation in 2018!!
Consider everything that LCIF has done for the Lions of Kansas and Hop on the Road to 50 Years with us!!
See your District Coordinator or MD District Coordinator to Hop On!

KU EYE LIONS FREE CLINIC on MARCH 21
The next KU Eye Lions Clinic will be on March 21, 2015. The location is at KU Eye Center at 7400 State Line Road in
Prairie Village, KS. KU Eye Lions get referrals from several sources but depend heavily on other Lions clubs to send individuals in need to the Clinic.
Process for Referring Individuals to KU Eye Center Free Clinic
A local Lions Club determines the need for financial need in whatever manner the club deems appropriate (lack of insurance, not eligible for state aid, etc.)
The KU Eye Center Lions Club will not ask for any further evidence of need. The clinic services are available to anyone
referred by a Lions Club.
A club representative calls the front desk at the Eye Center, 913-588-6600, and asks that the referred individual be
placed on the schedule for the next available quarterly clinic.
The club member needs to provide the individual’s first and last name, date of birth, a contact number, and the reason
for being seen. Parent or guardian information is needed for children under the age of 18.
The scheduling desk for the Eye Center will call the patient to confirm the date of the appointment; all appointments are
set for 9 a.m.
If it is known in advance that the visit will be specifically to obtain eye glasses, a check for $50 needs to be sent to the
Optical Shop, along with a copy of the referral form that can be found at the end of this newsletter. (Do not give a
check directly to a client.) If the client does not keep the appointment, the check will be returned to the Lions Club
making the referral and sending the check.
A referral form does not need to be completed if money for glasses is not to be provided by the club. A phone call is sufficient.
Next Clinic: March 21, 2015
Leos are going to Hawaii!! They have begun fundraising and are working hard to make this trip a reality. Here’s how you can help:
1.
Cost to feed a Leo per day in Hawaii is $45.00 per Leo per day (5 days total)
2.
They will be traveling as a group and we want them to have “look-alike” backpacks to help (a) keep
them together and (b) keep them organized! ($35.00 per Leo)
3.
Lodging will be approximately $400 - $500 per Leo based on the number of people per room (we are
trying to get 3 Leos and a chaperone for each room).
4.
We want each Leo to have 10 Leo pins for trading ($30.00 per Leo)
The Leos are NOT expecting a free vacation! Our kids have already paid for the airfare and are now working
to pay for the rest. No funds given by Lions are used for the sponsors – your support is for the Leos! There
are currently 12 Leos from Kansas planning to attend.
If your club can help in any way, it would be appreciated. Please send donations to the Kansas Lions Foundation with Leos to Convention in the memo line. If you could also let me know it was sent, that would be
greatly appreciated. Lion Cheryl Kerns

District 17-A Lions Continue Recruitment Efforts
Lions in clubs across our district are continuing their efforts to add to the Kansas Pride of Lions. As of February 24, 10 new Lions
have been added to club rolls. Five Lions were dropped from club rolls for various reasons, including death. These numbers result in positive growth of +5 for the month.
March has been designated by LCI leadership as a Membership Growth Month. Let’s see what we can do during March! A fertile
field for recruitment is the numerous partners (wives or husbands) of current Lions who are not members of a Lions club. Fellow
Lion, if your spouse is not a Lion why not “Just Ask.” That individual you live with may have just been waiting for an invitation
from you.

Lions: This is why we collect eyeglasses.
I contacted you last December about some eye glass donations for a Honduran mission trip I will be leading
the last week of May. I'm taking a team of 34 individuals and we'll be helping about 3,000 Hondurans with
basic medical care. Is there any way we could get some glasses for those we'll be serving? We'd be so
grateful to help them get stronger glasses instead of just reading glasses and sunglasses, which is what we
typically provide.
Thank you again for being so generous with my team. I'll be sure to bring back pictures of those who receive them. The Hondurans walk for literally hours overnight just to receive glasses. They are so badly
needed and it's heartbreaking in some ways, but also so rewarding and fun to see the smiles on their faces
when they can see clearly. This is my third year to travel to Honduras.
Your donations will be greatly appreciated! Jackie Doyel
Olathe Lions club (evening) will be having a pancake/Biscuit & Gravy breakfast on April 18th from

Dear Lions,
Last year, we set a goal to help 100 million people in celebration of our Centennial in 2017. I'm happy to announce that Lions have
helped 20 million people worldwide in the first six months of the challenge. That means we're on our way to achieving our goal
thanks to the incredible response from Lions like you!
Great things happen when Lions work together for the benefit of their communities and the world. From the Centennial Service
Challenge to the Lions Worldwide Week of Service in January, Lions everywhere are coming together to serve and celebrate LCI's
100th anniversary.
We're off to a great start, but we still have a ways to go. I hope you'll keep serving and supporting the Centennial Service Challenge. Visit Lions100.org for more info and start planning your next Centennial service project today. Remember, when Lions come
together to serve, we can change the world!
Together in service,
Joe Preston

Vitamins for Children
By Lion Margy Sundstrom
Children and Youth Chair
Our drive for Vitamins for undernourished children was a success. I feel I can say that since it was our first
one, so there is nothing to compare it to! We sent 43 bottles of children’s vitamins to ODIM
(www.odimguatemala.org) missionary group. The vitamins were delivered by Pastor Jeff Clinger with the
Tonganoxie United Methodist Church.
Pastor Jeff reports“We delivered the vitamins to the clinic in San Juan. The clinic is in San Juan La Laguna. ODIM also operates a clinic
in neighboring San Pablo. The two clinics together served 7,000 patients in 2014 and they anticipate serving even
more in 2015 (the San Pablo clinic wasn't opened until March 2014).
The children's multivitamins that you sent will be a fantastic resource as one of the greatest health concerns is malnutrition and the complications that it brings.”
I would like to thank Jeff Stockom with Walgreen’s in Bonner Springs for his generosity. Also thank you to
Overland Park Host, Shawnee, and Washington Lions Clubs for their participation.
I am working with 1stVDG Carleen Rajala to see how we can make this project bigger and better for next
year!
In Lionism,
Margy
