With a background in design, graduating from College of Fine Arts in 2005, Kareena works using a variety of media, including pencil, gouache, tea and ink, and often combines traditional drawing with contemporary digital graphic techniques. Unique and refreshing in its simplicity, her work often captures young children in moments of endearing expression as they discover their imaginary worlds. Mysterious giants and fragile creatures populate these shadowy worlds; like the curious owl, who simply says ‘hello’, or the deer alone in the silent woods. Kareena has exhibited in solo shows in Sydney and Melbourne, as well as in numerous group shows across Australia. She also works on commercial illustration projects for the music, fashion and advertising industries. We think she is like waking up on a rainy morning to pancakes and sweet tea and realising that you finally own a pet owl…. 14 THE FAVOURITE LIST Album The first that comes to mind, for the minute, is Doves - Lost Souls Film ‘La Cité des Enfants Perdus’, I think... Hmm. I watched ‘Love Actually’ twice last week... Oh, and ‘Up’ that was cute. Book I’m nearly finished reading ‘Superfreakonomics’ (surprisingly I mostly read non-fiction) Scene in a film From Amelie, when Nino is late and Amelie can only see two explanations Daydream As a child I used to have a daydream that at night the horses on a carousel would come to life and run free. Bird/animal I think finches are probably my favourite bird, as for animal, I’ll say my Italian greyhound, Pelle. 2 colours together Charcoal and duck egg blue. Word or words together Elephant Artist Salvador Dali, Egon Scheile, Michael Zavros... Memory When it felt like the stars aligned. Hero Samuel Beam or Michael Gondry.. Heroine Little Pelle - she keeps me sane! Smell Wet gravel on a sunny afternoon... or the sweet smell of pine trees when driving through the windy mountain roads in Samos, Greece. 16 18 Quote ‘We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars’ Oscar Wilde. Food I can’t decide between Miang kham (little Thai betel leaf appetisers) or Peking duck. Era 1920s. Pencil weight Sharp 2B. Flower Poppies. Ponytail or Plait? My hair is too short for a plait, so ponytail. Colour in the rainbow The blurry bit of colour between green and blue. Field or the sea? The sea. Nursery Rhythm Character? We like to wake up quietly with our family, to play with our friends...to be still. For this issue we share with you the very unique world of artist Alex Hudson ( also one of papier mache’s good friends) Alex’s universe is a little piece of magic..just the type of magic that we love. We spent the day with Alex, partner Moses, her sisters, 5 nephews and 2 nieces in the sunshining Australian bush. 23 “ Behind this process I like to come from an informed position, from technique to ideas and issues I feel strongly about, so behind the act of creating I put a lot of time into exploring, learning, discovery and engaging in that which I am drawn to. This involves drawing, reading and writing and these are what I see as the foundations behind creation. 25 THE FAVOURITE LIST Favourite ever song Fish and the Bird by Tom Waits Album Nick Cave double album Lyre of Orpheus and Abattoir Blues Film Phar Lap Book Mists of Avalon or Here on Earth by Tim Flannery Scene in a film When Phar Lap comes running out on the field at Melbourne Cup after his been in hiding from people trying to kill him because he was just to good, the crowd goes wild and he is magnificent in his coat, I still cry. Daydream I often daydream of the feeling you get from running free through a field of long grass under a bright blue sky Bird/animal Horse 2 colours together Red and Pink Artist Carravaggio for the classics David Hockney and Enrique Martinez Celeya Memory Galloping up the beach on the shore line with dolphins by my side keeping pace Hero David Attenborough although I think Julian Assange deserves a hero status as well Heroine Frida Kahlo Smell Rain after a hot day, jasmine in the spring and tomato plants cause they just smell so wholesome Quote “Drawing is the act of wrapping a line around your dreams” by Charles Blackman Food Italian Pencil weight 6B Flower Jasmine or Gardiner Ponytail or Plait? Ponytail Colour in the rainbow? All of them 27 “ I’d describe myself as an intuitive artist. I try not to get too intellectually involved in the meaning as that always works itself out in the end. When I approach a painting I never plan it out or think of what the end result will be. I let myself be guided by the thoughts and feelings I’m having at that moment, and as moments do, they shift and changed rapidly, so I prefer to let the work evolve rather than control it too much. 31 “ I believe if you want to make the world a better place you need to start with yourself, take responsibility for oneself and how we exist, coexist within the world, easier said than done though and I quite often find myself at a loss as to how to go about achieving it but it’s a thought that gets me back on track after I’ve fallen into ‘the billabong of depression’ as John Olsen would put it. Creating helps me navigate the ups and downs of my internal world and in finding some clarity, harmony and to just generally make sense of it all. alexhudson3@yahoo.com.au 33 34 CREATIVE I want to get lost in your world THE FAVOURITE LIST Song Love Generation - Bob Sinclar Album In Between Dreams - Jack Johnson Film Cinema Paradiso - Giuseppe Tornatore.
