the official publication of the los angeles athletic club November/December 2007 • Volume 96 • Issue No. 10 Holiday Events: Apollo + Athena Concert Member Party Children’s Party message from the editor Official publication of The Los Angeles Athletic Club Publisher Steven K. Hathaway Editor Cory Hathaway laac cory hathaway Dear Members, The holidays are here and we are looking forward to a great lineup of Member holiday parties. For our list of holiday events, turn to page 10 and mark your calendars. There is still enough time to book a private or corporate holiday party at The Club. Call our catering department at (213) 630-5287 to review menus and pricing. Looking back on 2007, I would like to recognize the great work of our current Board of Governors. Under John Levy’s leadership we have had an active group of committees creating social events and activities while offering effective feedback from members to management. Welcome and congratulations go out to the new Board of Governors for 2008. Most people are beginning to think about their New Years resolutions as we get closer to 2008. For inspiration, this issue features resolutions from some of our members and employees. A favorite resolution involves getting in shape by adding to classes and workouts. Keep your current routine going through December and by the time January comes around, you’ll be going strong. editorial office Graphic Designer John Parago Contributing Photographer Cynthia Perez John Parago Contributing Writers Eddie Addison Christin Maxwell The Los Angeles Athletic club Steven K. The top 50 men and top 30 women who are preseason frontrunners for the most coveted award in college basketball have been identified and the selection committee has announced the 2008 Legends of Coaching recipient. Pat Summitt will be honored along with the 2008 Men’s and Women’s Wooden Award winners, college basketball’s players of the year, and the Wooden Award All-American teams at The Los Angeles Athletic Club on April 12, 2008 in a nationally televised event. The “Legends of Coaching” Award was adopted by the Wooden Award Committee in 1999, with the first honor going to Dean Smith of North Carolina. Summitt, the first women’s basketball coach to be honored, is collegiate basketball’s all-time winningest coach. In her three decades in orange, Summitt has won 947 games and an unprecedented seven national titles, including the 2007 NCAA crown. Summitt’s teams have played in an incredible 26 consecutive NCAA Sweet 16s, and have won 26 Southeastern Conference regular season and tournament titles, while compiling an all-time record of 947-180 (.840). Amazingly, all of Summitt’s players since 1976 have done two things: Every Lady Vol player who completed her eligibility at Tennessee played in at least one Final Four, and all have graduated. The 2008 Wooden Award Weekend, which will include the presentation of the Men’s and Women’s Wooden Award, the Wooden Award All-American Teams and the Legends of Coaching Award to Pat Summitt from the University of Tennessee, will take place Aprill 11-12, 2008. The top five male and female finalists will be invited to Los Angeles for the Award celebration { 4 } nov/dec 2007 and will receive a contribution from The Los Angeles Athletic Club in their name to their university’s general scholarship fund. On November 1st, the Club welcomed our new head chef – Gerardo Garcia. Known as Jerry Garcia to his friends, Jerry joined us from the Coronado Cays Yacht Club in San Diego where he served as the executive chef. In addition to working in international destinations such as Tokyo, Berlin, Amsterdam and London, Jerry honed his culinary skills at a variety of prestigious Los Angeles establishments including: the Beverly Hills Hotel, Loews in Santa Monica and the Nikko Hotel. With Jerry joining The Club, it reunites his previous partnership with Jose Gonzalez (our F&B Director), both of whom worked together at the Riviera Country Club. As we continue to focus on overall member wellness and health, our new head chef will create healthy choices, while retaining the most popular “traditional” Club menu items. We expect Jerry’s new exciting menus to be rolled out in the beginning of 2008. Stay tuned. In keeping with The Club’s tradition of “keeping it all-in-the-family,” Jerry is married to the Yacht Club’s new general manager, Michele Underwood. Please introduce yourself and welcome Jerry to The Club, and share any thoughts or ideas with him with respect to our food and beverage operations. { 6 } nov/dec 2007 club news/upgrades nov/dec 2007 Canyoneering On September 20th, eight members traveled to the base of Mount Baldy to join guides from Alpine Training Services for a full day canyoneering trip. After dividing up our gear, we carpooled to the beginning of the trail and hiked to the top of the canyoneering route. The day trip consisted of rappelling down six waterfalls ranging from 60 to 100 feet. Everyone made it down safely and had a good time. Based on the success of the trip, The Club will be creating an adventure committee to recommend future excursions for Club Members. Hard to believe but it is now one hundred years with the Club and still enjoying the dining, sports and activities! Unfortunately, we’ll never know of the relationship George Zobelein had with the Club and his activities there, however, as a Los Angeles Pioneer, he left a legacy that most have forgotten and surely could not duplicate. Bavarian born in 1845, and trained as a LAAC Membership Certificates brewer and apprenticed in the dry goods business, George immigrated to the United States in 1867 by way of New York, Panama, San Francisco, and finally, Los Angeles. In the following years he would own and manage several dry goods businesses that took him to Inyo and to Panamint for the gold rush there in the 1870’s. By 1900 George had held several positions at local breweries, eventually purchasing part interest in a local brewery and formed a corporation under the name of Maier & Zobelein Brewery (Telephone: Main 91) located at Aliso, Vignes and Commercial Streets. In 1907 he sold his interest in the corporation and purchased controlling interest in the Los Angeles Brewing Company (the Brewery Artists Lofts today). Here, he built the business George Zobelein that lasted thru Prohibition and two world wars. During the Prohibition era the brewery survived thru the production of apple cider, pineapple juice, root beer and near beer. The obvious byproduct was pure alcohol that was sold to the medical profession, pharmacies, and paint companies. His grandson (my father, Richard), handled this distribution and managed to siphon off a little of this alcohol into a silver hip flask that he took to many parties during the twenties. He would pass the flask around under the table so one could add a little zip to their prohibition cocktail. April 7, 1933 brought an end to prohibition and the brewery was ready to go. The The Los Angeles Brewing Company trucks were loaded with beer and accompanied by treasury agents and armed guards riding shotgun. At the moment of departure, actor Walter Houston said a few words and Jean Harlow broke a bottle over the first truck. When the night was over the brewery had collected over a quarter of a million dollars! Richard Zobelein George died in 1936, other family members took over the business responsibilities and his membership in the LAAC was passed down to my father Richard. In 1948 the brewery was sold to the Pabst family of Pabst Blue Ribbon beer. I acquired the LAAC membership in 1971. Today the family is still around, managing private investments and commercial properties; now just a shadow of its former days. The LAAC is the one place in downtown Los Angeles where you can grow strong physically, emotionally, spiritually and socially. Along with the traditional free weight, treadmills, ellipticals, the LAAC offers a myriad of amenities for achieving optimum health holistically. Holistic health refers to a philosophy that views physical, mental, and spiritual aspects of life as closely interconnected and equal, while being frequently associated with alternative medicine. It is the idea that an entity is greater than the sum of its parts. Holistic concepts of health and fitness involve more than just taking care of all the various components that make up the physical body. Attention must be paid to aspects such as emotional and spiritual well-being. You’ve probably heard that yoga is good for you. Maybe you have tried yoga and discovered that it makes you feel better. What are the specific health benefits you can expect to enjoy from doing yoga regularly? Physical Benefits Flexibility: Stretching your body in new ways will help you become more flexible, bringing greater range of motion to your muscles and joints. Strength: Many yoga poses require you to support the weight of your own body in new ways. Muscle tone: As a by-product of getting stronger, you can expect to see increased muscle tone. Yoga helps shape long, lean muscles. Pain Prevention: Increased flexibility and strength help prevent back pain. Mental Benefits Mental Calmness: Concentrating intently on what your body is doing has the effect of bringing calmness to the mind. { 14 } nov/dec 2007 Stress Reduction: Physical activity is good for relieving stress, this is particularly true of yoga. We have a variety of yoga teachers and classes at the LAAC and in 2008, we are going to offer one-on-one yoga personal training. Basketball is one of the best ways to heighten your cardiovascular strength and endurance. It also affords the opportunity to improve muscular strength and endurance, not to mention the athletic benefits like reduced reaction time, coordination, power, speed and quickness. We all use one if not all of these attributes daily whether they are in the office or on the field. When taught as a team dynamic it promotes resilience, teamwork and a sharp mind and body. One must function physically in unison with teammates for the betterment of the team. It is an easy parallel and transition into “real life” instances where we distinguish when and where to take the lead on tasks, how to maximize use of your resources, when to ask for or when to give help to recognize deficiencies or surpluses in ones operation to improve holistic productivity. Here at the LAAC we offer basketball-conditioning classes that challenge the novice and the expert alike with our knowledgeable and vastly experienced staff, you will exceed your fitness and athletic goals. Circuit training is a type of interval training in which strength exercises are combined with endurance and aerobic exercises, mind and soul nov/dec 2007 while combining the benefits of both a cardiovascular and strength training workout. Can’t wait for a class? Then utilize the interval timers on the 7th floor and design your own personalized circuit. ‘Circuit’ means a group of activities and refers to a number of selected ‘stations’ positioned around the facility that are to be visited in rapid succession. The range of stations includes those comprising resistance equipment (e.g. hydraulic equipment or free weights), as well as allocated spaces to do squat thrusts, pushups, start jumps, sit-ups, and other exercises. As you can see, the LAAC provides the opportunity to shape up in various ways. Each person should complete one station before they proceed to the next station. They continue until they have finished all the stations as required, or until a certain time has been met. If you are uncertain of which avenue to take then try our “Ultimate Body shaping Class” which utilizes yoga, pilates, calisthenics and strength training moves for one great workout. In addition to creating a long lean body, shaping up your body and mind you will be able to experience various types of exercise first hand to help you decide what is best for you. So we’ve tackled the physical now lets touch on the mental. Advantages of circuit training • Easily structured to provide whole body workout. • Participants can work in small groups, allowing beginners to be guided by more experienced individuals, as well as benefiting from the supervision of the instructor. • Can be adapted for any size workout area. • Can be customized for specific goals and sports. Circuit training accommodates all members of all levels of exercise. It is an excellent way to introduce and acquaint yourself to The Club. The LAAC offers many social events and gatherings from seminars, to dance parties on the roof top or simply unwinding with a glass of wine in the bar after a long day at work. Be sure to also take advantage of The Club massage therapy, sauna, hot tub, steam, cold plunge and tanning bed facilities. We will have an onsite hairstylist beginning Decemeber 2007. Next time you’re not feeling at your best or you feel as though you’re having a bad day, ask yourself, “Am I taking full advantage of my ‘Holistic wellness center’ at the LAAC?” The Los Angeles Athletic Club offers morning and evening circuit training classes instructed by a knowledgeable and friendly staff to ensure you will have an effective and enjoyable workout. mercury { 15 } new year’s resolutions nov/dec 2007 Patti Gagan Learn to relax.
