New OrleaNs la september 24 - Louisiana Nursing Home Association
New Orleans, LA
September 24-26, 2012
Meet You At the OK Corral at High Noon
Actually, that’s the New Orleans Hilton on Monday,
September 24, 2012. Our theme for this year’s LNHA
Convention and Trade Show is the Wild West, so pack
your boots, boleros and jeans, and plan for a rootin’
tootin’ good time.
We have an outstanding line-up of excellent speakers.
No, not Wyatt Earp, Matt Dillon or Annie Oakley. But we did rope in
Dr. Susan Nelson, Kim Byers, Theresa Bennett, Carolyn Dell, Tom Baker,
Senator Sherri Buffington and many more.
Instead of a quick draw contest, we will have a golf tournament at
Lakewood Golf Course. The President’s Hootenanny will be held in lieu
of a barn dance.
And, on Wednesday, September 26, 2012, we will honor those cowboys and
cowgirls who have demonstrated “excellence” in their fields at our
Best in the West Awards luncheon.
So, don’t make me send a posse’ for you. Sign up now. I might even buy you
a sarsaparilla.

Roundin’ Up
Quality Care
Howdy partners! Do you have a gallon cowboy hat that is collecting dust? Are you
drawn to pointy snakeskin boots and chaps? Come and be a part of LNHA’s 2012
Convention and Trade Show where our Wild West theme promises to be a foot stompin’
rootin’ tootin’ good time! Louisiana Nursing Home Association represents long term
care providers and professionals offering long term health care. This convention will
offer the whole kit and caboodle... oh and don’t forget to show up with yer boots on!
LNHA’s fall conference combines education of conference attendees through seminars
and the opportunity to view new products and services - with networking opportunities,
which afford exhibitors the opportunity to market their products and services. The
seminars offered to conference attendees attract owners, administrators, department
heads, and other facility personnel. With the new quality initiatives and regulations,
all disciplines will need education on these topics. We have provided individualized
training in each of these areas in this year’s session.
In addition to structured marketing opportunities (exhibits), LNHA offers exhibitors
more casual ways to interact with attendees. These opportunities include both the
tennis and golf tournaments on Monday, September 24 and the President’s Reception
on Tuesday, September 25. Many of LNHA’s exhibitors have been around
for years. We thank them for their loyalty and look forward to
seeing their familiar faces. All attendees are encouraged to
make every effort to visit with exhibitors and thank them for
their support of the Association as well as the innovative
products they have to offer to our profession.

About our Presenters...
Theresa Bennett is the oldest of six children and has always been

has lived in a nursing home since December 2010. Theresa cared for her
mother for 13 years before that time. As you might imagine, she has a
particular interest in changing the culture of nursing homes.
As a registered nurse for more than thirty-nine years, Theresa worked
for nineteen years as a critical care nurse. She managed a 20-bed unit as a

positions including program reviewer, training coordinator, and program manager.
In May 1993, she came to the CMS Dallas Regional Office as a

nineteen years. Her responsibilities have included State liaison with oversight of State Survey
Agencies, and Program/Policy Coordinator for Long Term Care providers and Long Term Care
Enforcement. She has served as Acting Manager for the Long Term Care Enforcement and
Review Branch. Currently, she is Technical Advisor for the Division of Survey and Certification
for Region VI. She enjoys the challenge of working with the diversity of three branches that
make up the Division. She brings the unique perspective of working experience with each branch
throughout her CMS career. Theresa has a particular interest in quality assessment and quality
improvement and leads a group known as the Quality Improvement Coalition for Region VI.

Legislative Update
Tom Baker - Managing Regulatory Risks in a Changing Economy
Regulatory enforcement initiatives compel all nursing homes to assess their compliance with the complex matrix of statutes and regulations that govern the health industry.
Since the long term care industry relies on governmental reimbursement programs for a substantial portion of its revenue, regulatory non - compliance may mean financial
disaster. Also, the long term care industry has been targeted by the United States Department of Justice and the state Medicaid fraud units for potential criminal sanctions
or False Claims Act charges. In other words, regulatory compliance stakes are high.
This session will provide a holistic presentation that explores all of the nuances of managing regulatory risk, including the following:
• How individuals can become personally responsible for regulatory non - compliance;
• Critical areas of regulatory scrutiny, such as relationships with hospice providers and pharmacies and submission of correct claims for payment; and
• Implementation of Corporate Compliance and Ethics Plans as the principal tool for managing regulatory risk and mitigating potential damage, including specific focus
on topics such as compliance with the Deficit Reduction Act of 2005 and what is required under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010.
11:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. OK Corral Showdown with plenty of chow to go around!
Kim Warchol - Improve Quality Indicators and Maximize Revenue through Effective Alzheimer’s/Dementia Care Interventions
Alzheimer’s/dementia and other conditions such as delirium and depression are underlying root causes of many challenges faced in LTC, and yet they are often undetected
or poorly managed. This presentation describes an innovative and proactive interdisciplinary dementia model ideal for LTC including application for both the short
term and long-term say client. Strong theoretical foundations underlie these practical evaluation and care techniques. When successfully implemented this dementia care
approach can facilitate positive care outcomes and resident quality of life, maximize operational efficiency including enhanced Medicare reimbursement and census, and
improve staff and resident safety.
(Administrators, Social Workers, Nurses, Activities).

8:30 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. Cheryl Field - Rehospitalization: (Avoid) Paying the Price
Rehospitalization has garnered the attention of consumers, regulators and all segments of healthcare providers along the continuum. Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNFs)
once again find themselves in the spotlight and challenged to prevent rehospitalization, specifically of Medicare residents. Several CMS initiatives incorporate your
rehospitalization rates. Where is this coming from? Can you calculate this yourself and improve? This session will shed light on the many different places your
rehospitalization rates are appearing, along with proven evidence-based practices for lowering these rates. The discussion will also address the need for resident and family
education regarding advanced care planning to assist in reducing transfers of residents who are terminally ill or on a palliative care plan.

William G. Day, D. Ph. FASCP - Proactive Approach to Psycho - pharmacotherapy Management: A Road Map for Success
This presentation illustrates a proactive systematic approach to achieve compliance with the new CMS initiative regarding “Off Label” use of antipsychotics for residents
with Dementia and the goal of a 15% reduction in the number of residents receiving antipsychotics by December 2012. The approach identifies the intrinsic and extrinsic
factors associated with Dementia such as co-morbidities and medications which can inhibit cognition. This program also presents a guide for establishing appropriate
use of an antipsychotic in the nursing home setting and identifies the importance of IDT involvement in the total care of the resident which can lead to increased case-mix
interventions and increased RUG rates for the facility. Proactive Outcomes, the future is now.

The Equestrian Angels will make equine therapy interactions a realistic option
available for everyone to enjoy and show you why an equestrian encounter really is
the best medicine! These miniature horses visit nursing homes, special needs schools,
community hospitals, hospice and Alzheimer’s patients, group homes and more, all the
while encouraging memories, bringing joy and eliciting a smile or a simple gesture of
understanding from those they visit.
You can visit these horses in the OK Corral on Tuesday, September 25, 2012.
