MARTIN HoPERThe Bride
new CD from HOOB out now
It was in Williamsburg’s Puerto Rican
quarters, amidst laundrettes, Hasidic
Rabbis and newly arrived hipsters
that most of the songs on the album
The Bride came to life. There, in a
small shabby looking flat on South 3rd
Street, bassplayer Martin Höper spent
six months practicing and composing,
influenced by the vibrant, avantgarde
New York music scene.
Any music connaisseur, in Sweden at
least, is sure to have heard Martin
Höper play many a time, but possibly
without knowing it was him. You’ll find
him at the big festivals, hidden behind
whoever is currently in the spotlight.
Or you might spot him in one of the
jazz clubs, accompanying tomorrow’s
most promising stars, as well as the

jazz veterans of the older generation.
You’ll hear him through the speakers in
cafés and restaurants, as he skillfully
injects life and musical credibility into
the jazzier tunes of Pop.
Martin Höper is one of Sweden’s best
renowned bass players, with Koop,
Rigmor Gustafsson, Thus:Owls, Gustav
Lundgren Quartet, Fredrik Norén Band
and many others added to his portfolio
over the past ten years.
In other words, this is no newcomer
presenting himself to us on the album
The Bride. Still, it is the first time that
Martin appears as both bandmaster
(kapellmeister?) and composer. He does
so chosing to return to a more scaled
down expression and to the classical
jazz quartet format with all its possibili-
ties allowing for sensitive interaction
as well as individual expression.
The result is an embrace of all the the
musical expressions Martin has faced
during the years. Miles Davis as well as
Nirvana, Jobim and swedish folklore.
Linus Lindblom - saxophone
Martin Höper - bass
Jonas Östholm - piano
Chris Montgomery - drums
