Pecan roots are very susceptible to damage from drying out. Trees are carefully packed with moisture retaining material around the roots to maintain a damp condition while in transit. Pecan trees are a perishable product. The "liveability" of field fresh pecan trees is much greater than trees which have been dug for weeks or months and are carelessly handled. You will find us referring to western and eastern varieties in this catalog. Eastern varieties are resistant to leaf disease, thus are more able to grow in humid areas. These eastern varieties can be grown satisfactorily in the West. We do not recommend western varieties in the East because of leaf disease problems. For a rough boundary line for eastern and western varieties, draw a line from San Antonio through Ft. Worth to Tulsa. 1 PECAN TREES - Continued PH: 254-893-6497 LIPAN-(1) - Released by the USDA-ARS in 2011. Lipan originated from a controlled cross of Cheyenne and Pawnee in Brownwood, Texas. Excellent scab disease resistance, with medium susceptibility to yellow and black aphids. It has a high nut quality and high yield potential. Medium early nut maturity. Appears to be regular in its yield, increasing yields with increasing age with little alternate bearing. Kernels are cream to golden in color with open, non trapping dorsal groves and rounded dorsal ridge. The nut is oblong elliptic with a slightly pointed apex and rounded base (44 nuts/lb) with a 55% kernel. Add $2.00 Per Tree Limit 5 LAKOTA-(2) - A cross between Mahan and Major. Lakota is scab resistant and has a medium susceptibility to yellow and black aphids. Lakota is showing good production to the northern areas of Texas as well as Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri and Illinois. As one of the more recent USDA releases, Lakota carries the traits of heavy bearing, early to bear, cream to gold kernel color and easy shelling. Lakota’s exterior characteristics include being an oblong oval with an acute point and rounded base. Size for this variety is about 59 nuts per pound and has shelled out 62% kernel. Tree structure is upright growth, vigorous, and strong limb angles. Lakota is eastern variety and is fast becoming our number three best seller for commercial producers. WICHITA-(2) - This is a cross between the Halbert and the Mahan varieties. This pecan has an abundance of dark green foliage and is a consistent bearer of heavy, high quality nuts. We have seen as many as nine nuts in one cluster. Wichita follows Western in sales and production once you get anywhere west of Abilene. With good management, Wichita has performed well in the area just west of the lower I-35 corridor. The nuts are of medium size, about 60 normal nuts are required to make a pound. The nut is moderately elongated in shape, like the Schley. The nuts are usually very well filled. The Wichita is recommended in areas where western varieties do well. • The #1 money maker in the state overall. SIOUX-(2) - A Schley-Carmichael cross. The Sioux kernel is considered the best in eye appeal, shape, taste and ease of shelling. Nuts are small, 60-80 per pound. Has produced well in Central Texas and westward. Can be successfully grown in eastern areas with a good fungicide program. Sioux is the variety that over the years, customers and their neighbors have come back for, once they see the quality of the nut and tree structure. WACO-(1) - The newest of the controlled crosses from USDA. A Cheyenne-Sioux cross. There are about 53 nuts/lb., kernel yield is about 56%. Kernels are cream to golden in color, and have wide, non trapping dorsal grooves. Early pollen shed. Matures mid-season. Recommended for western pecan area. (1) Indicates early pollen shedding, Protandrous. (2) Indicates late pollen shedding. Protogynous. 2 CADDO PECAN FAX: 254-893-3400 WESTERN -(1) - Long well shaped nuts with thin shells. Western is the number 1 commercial variety in West Texas and has shown yield over 7,000 lbs per acre in the El Paso River Valley. CADDO-(1) - A small, football shaped nut with excellent kernel quality. This variety is becoming more and more popular each season in orchards and home plantings. Very disease resistant, vigorous, upright grower. Eastern variety. 60 nuts per pound, 57% kernel. CHEYENNE-(1) - This pecan resulted as a cross of the Clark and Odom varieties. The Cheyenne bears heavy and early after planting. The nuts are medium size (55-60 nuts per pound) and usually contain 57%-61% kernel. The kernels are relatively loose within the shell, making the Cheyenne nuts easy to shell with commercial machinery. The Cheyenne is protandrous in blooming (early pollen shedding) and is an excellent choice for pollinizing such varieties as Wichita. The variety is well tested in the Western area, and is also doing well in Eastern Regions. • Thin shell and high quality kernel. CHOCTAW-(2) - This variety is the result of a cross between the Mahan and Success varieties. This variety does well in practically all pecan growing areas. The nut is large and attractive, resembling the Stuart variety in shape. The hull is extra thin. The kernel, which consists of 58% of the total weight of the inshell nut, is very smooth, high in oil content, bright in color, and rich in flavor. The tree's upright habit of growth and good foliage makes it a good selection for yard plantings as well as commercial plantings. This variety is easy to shell. 3 WOMACK NURSERY CO. PECAN TREES - Continued Shipping Information Pg. 29 PAWNEE-(1) - A cross of Mohawk and Starking Hardy Giant. The nuts have very early maturity which makes the Pawnee an attractive variety for the shorter growing seasons. The nuts have matured as early as Sept. 15th at Brownwood. Protandrous, pollen shed similar to Cheyenne. Pawnee is considered to be an Eastern variety. DESIRABLE-(1) - Large nut, cracks easily. Moderate producer and bears early. Disease resistant. Popular eastern variety. OCONEE -(1) - One of the newer releases from the U.S.D.A. Pecan Breeders. The Oconee is a Barton-Schley cross. Variety has good nut size (about 50 per pound), a 55% kernel and has good disease resistance. KANZA-(2) - This variety has surpassed all other varieties two to one, the last few years. Kanza is very scab resistant, early maturing, and has very good tree structure characteristics. The only trait that has a fault is the size of the pecan. The count is 72 nuts per pound with a 55% kernel. This variety is by far Larry J. Womack’s favorite. HOPI-(2) - The Hopi variety resulted from a cross made between Schley and McCulley. We have observed this variety for over 35 years in our orchard. It is usually the best quality nut produced on our farm. The Hopi is a medium producer, not as likely to over produce one year and skip the next. The Hopi should not be planted in areas subject to scab. An excellent variety for planting in Central Texas and West. Nut size is about 55 per pound with a kernel percentage of 58-60%. Has a bright kernel which keeps well. Good tree shape. NACONO-(2) - One of the newest of the USDA pecan releases. A cross of the Cheyenne and Sioux varieties. Eastern variety. The Nacono has very high nut quality, scab resistance, and excellent tree strength. Nuts are suitable for inshell or shelling trade. Nut size is about 47 per pound and kernel percentage averages 56%. Upright tree growth. Mid-season maturity. LIMIT 10 PODSEDNIK-(1) - The largest pecans we have observed. One sample required only 20 nuts to make a pound. The tree has strong structure and large leaves. Appears to be scab resistant. These are desirable characteristics for your yard trees. Pollen is shed slightly ahead of pistil receptivity. Kernel is well filled and has good color in younger trees. Matures in early November. Eastern variety. Recommended for TRIAL PLANTING ONLY. 4 Ph. 254-893-6497 FAX 254-893-3400 PH: 254-893-6497 BUDDED PECAN TREE PRICES (Note: Some varieties not available in all sizes.) PECAN PLANTING OBSERVATIONS AND SUGGESTIONS Your first consideration in planting is determining if your soil and site are suitable. Some factors to consider are - Is my soil well drained Are large trees nearby which will compete for moisture, nutrients and sunlight? Is my soil a good pecan soil? Are pecans in immediate area growing in a similar soil type? Will the site allow for air movement around the tree and not be a trap for moist and/or cold air? We urge our customers to be ready for the trees when they arrive. The trees are packed at our nursery to maintain moisture in the root zone. If you are not able to plant upon arrival, check for moisture around roots, add water if necessary and reseal package. If weather is extremely cold, hold in an insulated building or straw covered in a barn or shed. ? 30 WOMACK NURSERY CO. (Keep roots of pecan trees covered and moist while planting.) Hole size will be determined by tree size. Usually a 10" diameter hole is sufficient for a 3-4' tree. Trees 7-8' may require 3' holes 16" across. We recommend that the side roots be trimmed to fit the above size holes. We like for the base of the root to rest on firm soil and the tree be planted at the same depth as grown in the nursery row. It is acceptable to plant 1/2" deeper, but do not allow any of the root to be showing after planting. Replace soil which was removed from hole and pack and water the loose soil around roots. If the hole cannot be dug as deep as the length of the taproot, cut off the bottom of the taproot so that the tree is planted at the proper depth. Some growers with heavy soils prefer to cut the tap root to a short length of 12-18". Some growers also prefer to remove 1/3 of the top when planting pecan trees. For many years peat moss has been recommended as a planting addition for heavy soils. Most commercial growers now agree pecan trees transplant better when soil which is removed from the hole is returned to the hole along with the tree roots. The peat moss addition will create a much looser soil texture around roots as compared to the surrounding soil. This condition will increase the possibility that the hole will become waterlogged and the pecan roots will sour before growth begins. Do not be anxious to form the perfect shaped tree. We like a "trashy trunk" i.e., a trunk with many small branches. This growth on the tree trunk helps the tree become re-established and will also hasten trunk diameter growth. A long, slim trunk with only a bit of top growth is subject to sunscald and winter injury. The "trashy trunk" can be gradually removed in 2-3 years as the tree becomes re-established. In selecting branches to serve as permanent limbs, keep in mind that the wide angle branches are the strongest. Limbs which form a narrow crotch are weak and will usually split at the weak crotch. CAUSES OF PECAN TREE TRANSPLANTING FAILURE 1. Lack of soil drainage. 2. Failure to settle soil around roots. 3. Lack of water & failure to control weeds. 4. Too much water - This is especially a problem when soil drainage is poor. 5. Fertilizer used in hole with newly planted tree. 6. Allowing roots to dry during transplanting. 7. Herbicide damage. 31 WOMACK NURSERY CO. PEACHES, APRICOTS, NECTARINES, APPLES AND PLUMS The roots on these trees should be trimmed so as not to be bent around when set. Trim branches back to about 6 inches. When the branches start growth, select 3 or 4 branches and keep the others cut off. Holes for fruit trees are not required to be more than 1 foot deep and foot across. Plant the tree back to where they were growing in the nursery row. It is important to water these trees after planting to settle the soil around the roots. Many growers prefer to remove 1/2 of the top when planting fruit trees. ROSES 1 to 2 year old container grown plants. When received, they will have been taken out of the container. Prepare the bed or rows by spading up well. Place root ball at ground level or a little above. Back fill with soil and water thoroughly. Mulch will help to cool roots during periods of hot weather. BLACKBERRIES We like to plant berry plants about 1 inch deeper than they grew in the nursery row because of the tops being trimmed for packing and shipping. The thorny varieties will only have a small amount of tip exposed. The thornless blackberries will have about 3-4 inches of cane sticking out of the ground. Plant about 4 foot apart in row. Have rows at least 12 foot apart. Keep moist until plants start growth. A mulch will help. BLACKBERRY ROOT CUTTINGS Lay root cuttings horizontally in a 2-4 inch deep trench. Water in well and cover with soil. Mulch the area lightly to conserve moisture. GRAPES Grapes will mostly come untrimmed, just as they were in the nursery row. Some varieties will be pre-trimmed for planting. To prune a grape for planting, remove the top growth back to a single spur with 3 or 4 fussy end nodes. Trim the roots back to about 3 or 4 inches. Plant the grape to the same depth as it was growing in the nursery row. The hole will need to be approximately 6 inches across and about 8 inches deep. Pack the soil around the roots and water thoroughly, to remove the air pockets from the hole. Plant grapes 8 - 12 ft. apart in rows, and plant your rows 12 - 15 ft. apart. 32 Wonderful Pomegranates See Page 17 MAX TAPENER A popular time saver for vineyards, tomato growers and orchards.
