Introduction
Andrew Coleman Friend was the third child of Joseph Friend and Sarah Green.
Andrew was the grandson of “Old” John Friend, founder of Friendsville and patriarch of
the Garrett County Friend Family. Andrew Coleman Friend married Sarah Nancy Harden
and with their seven children lived their lives in the Friendsville area.
Winfield Scott Friend, nephew of Andrew Coleman Friend described him as: 1
Uncle Andrew was a moral man, kind hearted, but look out, though, if you got him
started. He could take a barrel of whiskey, pick it up, and drink out of the
bunghole. Could pick up a boy with one hand and without bending an elbow
transfer him around to the other hand and set him down.” Andrew was a stone
mason, farmer and tobacco raiser. When he died “with a chew of tobacco in his
month.”
We have attempted to outline the recorded history of Andrew Coleman Friend and
his family. Personal histories, photographs, lands deed, wills, military records and
US Census records have been included in this text. It is our goal to preserve the family
history of Andrew Coleman Friend before it is lost to time. As with our previous books
on the Friend family, we have spent countless hours reconstructing this family history
from these multiple recorded sources. Although thoroughly checked, there may be
unintentional errors, for which we truly apologize. We openly encourage additionally
information and corrections to this text.
We have divided the information on Andrew Coleman Friend and his family into
three separate books because of the massive amount of material accumulated during this

project. The first book details the life of Andrew Coleman Friend and all but two
children. Jonathan “Sugar Joe” Friend 2, Joab Jonah Friend 3 and their children were
briefly outlined in this book and will be featured in great detail in two separate books.

At the request of David Kent this deed was recorded Jany. 5th 1860.
This Deed, made this 27th day of December in the year eighteen hundred and fifty nine,
by Andrew Friend and Sarah Friend, his wife, Witnesseth; Whereas Andrew Friend by
his bond of conveyance dated the first day of April, in the year eighteen hundred and

forty eight, sold to Andrew Ryland, late of Allegany County, in the State of Maryland,
All that piece or parcel of land, which is hereinafter particularly described; And whereas,
the said Andrew Ryland afterwards died intestate, before the full payment of the purchase
money which he agreed to pay for the said piece or parcel of land, and before he obtained
a deed, therefore from the said Andrew Friend; And whereas the said piece or parcel of
land was afterwards sold, under a decree of the Circuit Court for Allegany County, as a
Court of Equity, by Ralph Thayer, Trustee, to one David Kent, which said sale of duly
reported to and ratified and confirmed by the said Court, And the balance of the purchase
money owing to the said Andrew Friend, by the said Andrew Ryland, at the time of his
death for the said piece or parcel of land was fully paint out of the proceeds of said sale,
all of which will more fully appear by reference to the papers and proceedings in the
case, numbered Nine hundred and thirty six, on the Equity Docket of said Court, And
whereas the said David Kent, under his deed from the said Ralph Thayer, Trustee, has
become invested with the Equitable title to the said piece or parcel of land, and by reason
of the above recited facts, is entitled to the legal title thereto; And in order to convey unto
him the said David Kent, a full and complete legal title, to the said piece or parcel of
land, the said Andrew Friend and Sarah Friend, his wife, execute this instrument. Now
therefore, this deed Witnesseth; that the said Andrew Friend and Sarah Friend, his wife,
do grant, in fee simple with the said David Kent, all that piece or parcel of land lying and
being in Allegany County, in the State of Maryland, the same being part of a tract of land
called “Resurvey on Grim’s Point” which is bounded and described as follows, to wit:
Beginning for the said piece or parcel at a bounded black oak tree, it being also the
beginning of the whole tract and running thence with the first and part of the second line
of said tract South eighty five degrees West forty four perches to a stone near three
marked white oak trees, North fourteen degrees West thirty six and a half perches to a
large white oak tree, being a corner of that part of the said tract called “Resurvey on
Grim’s Point” which belongs to William Friend, then running across said tract of land
North eighty nine degrees West sixty two and a half perches to a bounded poplar,
standing on the third line of the whole tract, and running with it and part of the fourth line
thereof, South seventeen and a half degrees West twenty seven perches to a bounded
walnut tree, South sixty two degrees, West three and a half perches to a marked hickory
sapling, then running through said tract of land South seventeen and a half degrees, east
forty eight and a half perches to a bounded spruce tree, South fifty three degrees, East
twelve perches to a marked spruce and maple standing on the East bank of the
Youghiogheny River, South eighty five degrees, east ninety five perches to the given line
of the whole tract and with it by a straight line to the beginning, And the said Andrew
Friend covenants that that he will warrant specially the land and premises hereby
conveyed, Witness our hands and seals.

Obituary of Joshua M. Friend. Transcribed by Patty (Friend) Thompson (June 2006)
Joshua M. Friend was the eldest son of Andrew and grandson of Joseph Friend, who for
many years lived on a farm on the east side of the river and adjoining the site of the
present town of Friendsville, and who died at his home there about 57 years ago. Joshua
was born in Belmont county, Ohio, November 20, 1818. While a young man he spent
several years as a school teacher. He afterward learned the stone mason trade at which he
worked for some years. He was married on December 24, 1840 to Miss Sarah A. Van
Sickle, since which he has lived either at or on a farm near the town of Friendsville.
He was the father of nine children, three of whom died in the early life and six are still
living, namely Reese E., David A., Katie M., Hattie, Rufus and Adelia. David A. pastor
of the M.E. Church in Friendsville at this time and Rufus has his home in Arkansas,
where he has resided for the past eighteen years, and all the other children live within the
bounds of Garrett County. In addition to the children there remains an aged widow to
morn the loss of the departed. For the past twelve years the subject of this sketch has been
a great sufferer. His disease was in his feet and for nearly a dozen years he was never
able to leave his room. The last few days of his life were marked with the most intense
suffering. He died July 30, 1902, at 4 a.m., aged 83 years, 8 months and 10 days. The
funeral services were conducted by Rev. H. E. Friend, of Cranesville charge, and the
remains were laid to rest in the family graveyard on the old home place, where they await
the Archangel's call in that great day.

About the Authors
Patricia Ann (Friend) Thompson was born and raised in Garrett County,
Maryland. Pat’s first book on the Friend family was John Friend Sr. of Friendsville,
MD (2007), the patriarch of the Friend Family in Garrett County Maryland. Patricia is a
descendant of John Friend Sr., through his sons John Jr. and Charles. Patricia is also a
descendant of numerous Garrett County families such as Enlow, Harvey, Tasker,
Murphy, Upole and Thrasher. Pat is a Life Member (#889) of the FFAA, currently
serving as 1st Vice President of the organization. Pat is a member (#854484) of the
National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Youghiogheny Glades
Chapter (through John Friend Sr.) and a member of The Swedish Colonial Society.
Patricia currently lives in Frederick County, Maryland with husband, John (Scoop)
Thompson and their three dogs.
Patrick T. Smith was born in Oakland, Maryland and grew up in Western
Maryland. Patrick is a graduate of Frostburg State College (B.S.), West Virginia
University (M.S.) and Texas A&M University (Ph.D.). Patrick is also a descendant of
numerous Garrett County families such as Echard, Harvey, Hinebaugh, Glotfelty,
McRobie and Wilson. Patrick’s first book on the Garrett County Friends centered on the
maps and papers of William H.H. Friend. His second book was John Friend Jr. of
Friend’s Delight, Sang Run, MD, son of John Friend Sr. Patrick is currently Treasurer
of the FFAA as well as a Life Member (#1102). Patrick lives in Frederick County,
Maryland with his wife, Roxanne and daughter Emma Gustav Smith.
