Dear Members:
I wish you all a safe and Happy Thanksgiving. I have
been watching too many Thanksgiving and Christmas
stories on the Hallmark channel the past couple of weeks.
These movies inspire me as they are filled with stories
about family traditions, finding that one true love and a
sense of belonging among strangers (who meet often
through Angels and Santa). Yeah, it’s a bit sappy and I
am not advocating watching the Hallmark channel, but if
you want to be taken back to a time of fun, fellowship and
the true spirit of the Holidays this will hopefully stir up
some good memories. It disappoints me that the stores
are open during a traditional day of celebration, but we live in different times and maybe what we
know as tradition is changing. If you are sentimental, like me, you will understand.
You may be asking why I am writing about this in the Prez Sez, so let me preface this with the
sense of nostalgia as Tom Ward, the former Prez, gave me a bin full of history on the BVSA ski
club. I opened a couple of files and found some old membership lists from the early 90ies. The
board actually had a contest to increase the size of our club from about 50 members. Ski trips
were offered as incentives to join the club if a member could sign up a minimum of 7 new members. Whow, some members (and you know who you are) have been with us for over 2 decades.
I hope that some of the new members will appreciate BVSA history and will remember the club
as fondly as I do right now and in years to come. I read very basic meeting notes, not as structured as they are today. I found the original hand typed By-Laws and I wonder if that was before
laptops or Microsoft Windows Software. Did you know that in 1994-95 meetings were held at
Georgio’s in Downingtown, then moved to 10 Downing Street, and then to Ruffini’s in Thorndale.
So four moves in 20+ years is not too bad. I found old board minutes discussing club and trip
insurance and the member application had a rather lengthy Release of Liability on the back
page. Bob Frame was President in 1995. Bob, where have you been? We miss you. The board
only raised the cost of membership and activities attendance $5. Not a big increase for 20+
years, so that should tell you something about our BVSA family tradition.
Who remembers the club from 1985? Does anyone care? The board is chewing on the idea of
having a “Then (past) and Now (present)” theme for one of our general meetings. I have taken
pictures over the past 12 years capturing my memories of our club. Imagine what some of our
members looked like 20-30 years ago. So Dick Riley, Charlie Lindsey, Tim Noonan (before Eva)
Joan Lane/Sorce with longer blonde hair and Barb Hainey with curly locks (prior to Ned) get out
your scrapbooks filled with trip memorabilia. I do hope you will embrace the idea and share
them with us.
December’s general meeting will be hilarious so make sure you wrap that special something to
make it fun. The more times gifts are stolen, the more valuable they become. I remember one
year Mable Evons ended up with a giant red Poinsettia that I wanted desperately. Joan has had
her gifts stolen more times than anyone else in the history of the club (at least to my knowledge).
AND, if you haven’t sent in your check for the Christmas Party (naughty, naughty), it is the last
hoorah for the end of the year.
2012 was another great year for our club. Thank you board members for all your hard work and
dedication. Without you, as volunteers, we would not have changed venues, purchased database software, improved our newsletter and increased our membership. We have money in the
till, great ski trips planned and another year of keeping some things traditional. Some things
change and some things just get better. See you soon.

Holiday Exchange Game Rules All that wish to participate in the Holiday Exchange should bring a wrapped gift. Do not label the gift in any way. The gift should be valued at $15. Please be kind and do not bring a garage sale item. The game begins with each person participating picking a number from the basket. The person that draws the number one begins the game. This person must pick from the wrapped gifts available. The second person can either steal the gift selected by player number one or pick from the wrapped gifts. The game proceeds with each subsequent player deciding whether to steal from the opened gifts or selecting from the remaining wrapped gifts. In order to keep the game moving along, there are only two steals allowed within the round. This means that if two gifts are stolen during a turn, the second person that had his or her gift stolen MUST pick from the pile of wrapped gifts. There is NO limit to the number of times a gift can be stolen throughout the game. After the last player has played, the person that started the game, player number one, has the opportunity to make a direct ex‐
change with anyone in the room. 2013 Ricketts Glen Camping Trip July 18th to July 21st Trip of a Lifetime

BVSA Halloween Costume party
Saturday, October 27th
We had great weather for the 2012 Halloween party held at the Barn in Liongate. There were some great costumes
which can be seen on the BVSA Yahoo groups website. Over 50 people attended, bringing some delicious food and
sporting some awesome costumes. Joan provided the tunes and the BVSA babes strutted their stuff on the dance floor.
The 1st Place winners of the costume party were Tony & Sandy in their faux nude Adam & Eve outfits that were complete with fig leaves and an edible snake Stromboli. Ian took 2nd Place - he was spooktakular in his bloody table top. 3rd
Place was won by Mark & Cathie who paraded as a dog and her fire hydrant. There were so many contestants who were
deserving of prizes, like Joan in her regalia as the Queen of Hearts, Raggedy Ann & Andy by Ned & Barb for creativity,
and Jack Sparrow and the Renaissance costumes for their authenticity. We look forward to next year and will be prepared with more awards for different categories.. Thanks to all of those who attended. ….Joyce

Briggs Bonfire Bash
Friendships, Food, Fire, Fun and Music to boot
See what $10 gets you today!!
We had the perfect crisp, clear night for the annual Briggs Bonfire!!! Those who listened
to the advice and dressed in layers still had to snuggle up to the fire for warmth or go
shake their booty on the dance floor to get heated up.
Friendships were rekindled while others were started. Whether this was your first or
20th, you understand why this event is the best attended event of the ski club year.
What a variety of food. We had butternut squash soup, salads, sides and desserts to go
with the 15 gallons of chili - still need some help cleaning the pot. Think we should sell
a cook book??
With the weather getting chilly later into the evening people moved from eating in the
house, to the fire pit and then off to the music. This circle was repeated by many
throughout the night with a stop or 10 by the wine table or the keg. Think we can kick 2
kegs next year?
How about that band!!! The wide variety of genres and the talented musicians made for
an unforgettable evening of music, dancing and our own singing with the band. Thanks
guys you were great but we missed you Mike??
Special thanks to Ben for opening his home to all of us & for making his fantastic chili
again this year, the valet parking staff (heard they got over $200 in tips), Jeff Klein for
grabbing the beer and Terry Fite for helping set up and organizing the clean up.
The Bonfire signifies the end of outdoor parties and now we focus on the skiing part of
the club. Thanks again for all those that made the night special and until spring - enjoy
the snow!!
