Episcopal Greetings
This is your 2010 Holston Annual Conference
Journal. This is an accounting of our faithfulness
to the promises we made to God, to each other
and to ourselves. I want to thank you for your
faithfulness and for those of you that walked the
extra mile. We entered into a covenant with God
that we would “Offer Them Christ”. We also
made promises to God for the year 2011. We said
we would try diligently to teach ourselves to
“tithe” to God thus enabling our local churches to
give a tithe to our annual conference and general
church for the financing of our corporate ministry
throughout Holston, the United States and around the world.
This was a bold new step for us as we seek to follow the teachings of God.
We continued to be a mission minded Annual Conference supporting the move of
the Holy Spirit to lead new people to Christ, Start New Churches, equip people to
be Principled Christian Leaders, Develop Intentional Ministry with the Poor and to
work with the Healer to Improve Health Globally.
As we continue to “Offer Them Christ” it is my prayer that the covenant we have
made with God through Jesus Christ may become a reality in all the places where
the people of Holston Conference serve.
I end where I began presenting this journal to
you as a tool to hold us accountable to the
promises we have made and to thank you in
advance for following Christ as authentic
people.
Yours in Christ,

John 14:1-6
I would like to thank Hills Union Church for approving
me for ministry and the confidence they placed in me. I
also wish to thank all the churches that I have served: Del
Rio Circuit (my first appointment), Cosby Circuit,
Madisonville Circuit, Mechanicsburg Circuit, French
Broad Circuit, Thornsprings-Wesley Memorial Circuit,
Tellico Plains Circuit, and Looney’s Creek-Sulphur Springs
Circuit. All these appointments total 30 years of service.
There are no words to express what a joy I have had being a servant of Our Lord
and Savior Jesus Christ in these churches. As long as I live, I will cherish the
memories of all the people who encouraged me throughout the years of ministry. I
thank those who gave me encouragement, and I thank the churches of Holston
Conference for giving me a chance to be His servant.

I am a second-career preacher, although I think God
called me when I was a little girl. My father was a Baptist
preacher, and I loved to imitate him; at the age of 6 or 7, I
would stand in the front yard and preach, just like he did.
My first career was as an RN, which leads me to how I
became a Methodist. One of the nurses that worked with me invited me to sing at a
ladies’ meeting at her church one Saturday morning in February 1994. Her church was
Valley View UMC in Claxton, TN, about 2 miles from my home. I went back to sing
several times, and by October we knew God was calling us to that church.
We got involved in Lay Witness Missions, and during one of those I surrendered to
my call into the ministry.
During my four years at Asbury Theological Seminary, I had the privilege of
meeting students from all over the world, including the United States. That gave me a
new understanding of the way our culture influences the way we worship and present
the Gospel message. The same holds true in every church and every community; their
social customs and cultural norms will influence the way we present the Gospel
message.
As a pastor, my greatest joy has been in the lives that have been changed because of
the teaching and preaching of God’s Word. In every situation we can rely upon the
Word of God for guidance, wisdom, instruction, correction, forgiveness,
encouragement, and strength.

In my view, it is regrettable that the shelf-life of the
second-career pastor is not as lengthy as one might wish. At
some point the homilies sound a bit repetitive, and it takes
the body longer and longer to recover from the high holy
days. The ability to recognize the arrival of this
relinquishing point comes through God’s grace. The same
benevolence that called me and carried me throughout my ministry is helping me step
back and make the graceful exit.
My heart sings when I reflect upon the blessing it is to be an ordained pastor, and I
am ever so thankful that the conference took a chance on me 12 years ago. Another
retiree once said, “Every exit involves a sense of future, and every exit line becomes
an entryway.” If this is true, there will always be ways to serve; God will see to it!

I Sing the Almighty Power of God
God of the Sparrow God of the
Psalm 46, Luke 24:13-35
One spring afternoon in Chattanooga, I went to a home to
visit with a couple about their children’s upcoming baptisms.
Their oldest child, Houston, 5 years old with blond hair and
bright blue eyes, was standing at the front door watching me as I approached. As I
stood at the door, he turned and called out, “Mom, the creature is here!”
At age 63, I increasingly appreciate this truth announced by a 5-year-old and
affirmed in scripture: “Know that the Lord is God. It is God who made us, and not we
ourselves; we are God’s people, and the sheep of God’s pasture” (Psalm 100:3-4). We
do not create ourselves, sustain ourselves, or save ourselves by ourselves. Like sheep,
we are creatures who are dependent upon our Creator, each other, and creation itself,
and we can flourish only in community and communion with other creatures, with
God, and with creation.
For too long I was afraid to acknowledge, much less accept, my creaturely status
and my deep need for community and communion. I believed that if I studied and
worked hard enough long enough, I could learn everything I needed to know to be a
pastor. How mistaken I was!
Fortunately, through CPE supervisors and fellow chaplains, pastoral counselors Dr.
Bill Balch and Dr. Jim Philpott, and other therapists, colleagues, and family, as well as

through a marriage crisis and a season of depression, I’ve learned to appreciate how
little I or anyone can know about ourselves, others, God, the Bible, or ministry, apart
from God’s grace and the guidance of others. We are all on an ongoing journey of
discovery.
I’m deeply grateful for my family – my parents Bob and Kathryn, my wife Marie,
our daughter Sarah, our son and daughter-in-law Wil and Rebecca, our grandson Sam,
my sister and brother-in-law Mary and Jim – and for my home church, First UMC,
Oak Ridge. More than they know, they have been a means of grace.
I’m also deeply grateful for the care, counsel, and mentoring influence of pastors
along the way: Cecil Hardin, Ben St. Clair, Gordon Goodgame, Curtis Schofield, and
Richard Looney during high school, college, seminary, and my earlier appointments;
later, Dick Timberlake, Bill Kilday, Laura Trent, John Ripley, Bill Mooney, Gordon
Ridenour, Bishop Ray Chamberlain, and Pat Clendenen; and all along the way,
Charles Neal and Dr. Bill Balch. These persons and some exceptional staff and lay
servants whom I’ve been privileged to know have also been a means of grace.
In retirement I look forward to enjoying family and friends, reading, writing,
playing golf, and finding a part-time form of ministry that will be challenging and
fulfilling. For the journey that is now ending and for the new journey that lies ahead,
thanks be to God!

I never dreamed retirement would come so soon. The
truth is, there is no retirement here on earth for us. Our
retirement plan is out of this world.
As I look back on my ministry, I see a number of defining
moments, but one sticks out above all. In my first
assignment as a student pastor, I was passing out communion. I went by first with the
little wafers and a little 5-year-old lady waved me off. When I came by with the grape
juice, I assumed she didn’t want any, and I passed her by. Etched in my memory like
it was yesterday is what happened after communion was over. This beautiful 5-yearold grabbed the hand of the patriarch of the church and, as he looked down, she said,
“He skipped me, and I was thirsty, I mean really thirsty!”
As my heart broke, a light went on. Just because a person won’t accept Christ in
one form, don’t assume they won’t accept Christ in another.
There are many thirsty people, I mean really thirsty. If they won’t accept Christ in
the usual way, find a way in which they will!

Jesus, What a Wonder You Are!
Psalm 103:1-5
I entered the St. Charles United Methodist Church for the
first time on a cool morning in the spring of 1947, in the
arms of my mother, Loraine Corbin. In January I had been
born in a house 100 yards away in sight of the church. I’m
sure no one present that morning had any idea that many years
later I would become their pastor in July 1979. Some present that first morning were
still attending St. Charles Church, and I would later officiate at their funeral services.
Mrs. Etta Goins loved to introduce me to her friends as her pastor and would tell
them, “I knew him before he was born.”
I am so thankful for the call of God in my life to preach the Gospel and to the
Methodist Church for calling me to be the pastor of the St. Charles and Robbins
Chapel Circuit. The two churches have been and remain a tremendous blessing in my
life. They have allowed me to travel around the world with World Evangelism and the
World Methodist Evangelism Institute with Dr. H. Eddie Fox, Dr. George (Sonny)
Morris, and Dr. Winston Worrell preaching and teaching the gospel in at least 45
countries with more than 65 trips.
It is very humbling to have been used of God to bring hundreds to His Kingdom in
the almost 31 years Ruth and I led the two churches. There have been many ups and
downs, but the victories for Christ have far outweighed the defeats. I love Jesus with
all my heart and will continue to serve Him and the Kingdom. Someone said to me, “I
didn’t think preachers retire.” My reply was, “Preachers don’t, but Pastors do!” I
don’t think I shall ever quit preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and I know that my
love for the United Methodist Church and the people called Methodists will never
cease.
The one God chose to be my lifelong soul mate and helper in His ministry, Ruth
Turner, was born in the house next door to the church, and we were married in 1967.
There are no words to adequately express the love and appreciation I have for Ruth.
We have been blessed with two beautiful daughters. Rachel is married to Dr. Charles
Lafon, and they have given us two granddaughters and one grandson; and Rebecca is
married to Dr. Eric Stickle, and they have given us three more grandsons! (So far.)
I am grateful for the influence, patience and support of all my clergy peers in the
Holston Conference over the years and to the laity for providing us a measure of
security and dignity in retirement.

As I reflect over the years of my ministry, blessings and
joys come to mind that Carolyn and I have experienced. We
are blessed with some of the greatest friends in all the
world, all of whom we met through the church. (When I
said that to one of my minister friends, he said, “Jerry isn’t
that the Body of Christ?”)
To be able to work with people like Richard Looney, Juanita Boyd, Bob Lundy,
Norman Vincent Peale, Charles Lippse, and Keitha Cross and others has been such a
blessing.
To be a part of a family’s journey during a birth, baptism, wedding (the highest of
highs) or a life-threatening illness or funeral (the lowest of lows), what an honor.
To travel with young people to third-world countries on mission trips and watch
their personal and spiritual eyes come to a new awakening has been so rewarding.
To be with students as a young family is handed keys to their new home by way of
Habitat for Humanity has made me much more hopeful.
To be a part of the Emmaus Walk, Chrysalis, and Journey has so enriched our lives.
Dag Hammarskjold best summed up my sentiments at this time:

For what will be – yes!”

It has been a privilege and an honor to have been a United Methodist pastor. I will
always be grateful for the laity who loved me and cared for me not because of what I
did right and in spite of my shortcomings. In my first appointment, some of them
were Ben and Marie at Sunbright, John and Brenda at Rugby Road, and Andy and
Kathy at Burrville.

Throughout the years, God in His goodness has provided in every congregation
people of grace and faith who encouraged me to become a more effective pastor and
shepherd.
I am so grateful for the love and support of my family. My parents, Than and Marie
Galyon, made tremendous sacrifices as all loving parents do for their children. They
raised me in the church where I was loved into faith by their example and the
example of so many others.
I am blessed that my sister, Miss Carolyn Galyon, has been and continues to be a
wonderful sister whose care and concern have been unwavering. She has been my
rock and my friend.
The greatest joy of my life is that I have had the amazing opportunity to be the
father of my son, Philip. He inherited from his mother a pure and godly heart. Even
though he is 20 years old, Philip has already grown into a courageous and powerful
servant of Jesus Christ. He has accepted the call of God upon his life to serve Him as
his vocation.
I want to say a word of deep appreciation to my friends who have been there for
me. They have loved me and stood by me. They have cared enough to challenge me
to accountability. They have reminded of who I was and who I was called to be when
I have been on the verge of forgetting.
While this time of my life is ending, a brand new chapter is opening up. God has
blessed me with the opportunity to be married to Ms. Sue Ellen McMath. Her love
and faith in God daily lifts me up with joy and hope. She is truly an angel sent from
Heaven.
Even in the midst of change and new beginnings, I continue to trust in God whose
Son has been my Savior and whose Holy Spirit has been my inspiration.
Truly, as Wesley proclaimed, the best is yet to be!

Favorite Hymn: God Will Make a Way
I began my career at the young age of 3 when my mother
took me by the hand and led me up a flight of steps to the
older ladies’ Sunday School Class at St Andrews Methodist
in Chattanooga, TN. My mom placed me on the piano
bench, and Miss Minna introduced me. I played Jesus Loves
Me.
When finished, as I walked down the aisle to leave for my
own class, I received kisses, hugs, and nickels, dimes, and
quarters – not bad for a 3-year-old. I decided at that moment that playing instruments
in church was a good thing to do.
My mother was an organist/director of music, and for many years I served as her
pianist in the church. Then when I was a senior in high school, I received a call from
a Presbyterian church who needed an organist and “would I be interested?” I wasn’t
interested until I realized that the salary would pay my car insurance each month.
Being a senior in high school, I realized that I could do anything – even if I had never

played an organ. Since August 1970, I have been employed either in the United
Methodist Church or the Presbyterian Church continuously.
I received my call to serve the church through becoming a Diaconal Minister in
mid-1980. I later was ordained a permanent Deacon in Full Connection. I am not
retiring from working. I have been the minister of music at Pleasant Grove UMC for
the past 11 years, additionally I am still working with the music team at the UM
Publishing House leading conferences and occasionally doing some writing. In
addition to my church activities, I am also an Education Specialist teaching in Dalton,
GA, where I teach 227 students – chorus students!
Life has its ups and downs, but the love and guidance of God and our great church
are always constant. My favorite hymn may surprise some – it is actually a chorus.
On the night of my ordination, as I sat in the front row with my fellow Ordinands,
Douglas Grove DeJarnett began to lead us in singing, “God Will Make a Way where
there is no way.” That night, this familiar chorus touched my heart, and the spirit
began to help me through the knowledge that my marriage of over 20 years was
ending. As the tears flowed nonstop, I knew that God Will Make a Way!
As I began my life as a single mom and then went through a total loss apartment
fire, the loss of a job, and cancer, the song continued to swirl around me – God Will
Make A Way.
When my husband died of a sudden illness in 2009, the song played again, God
Will Make A Way. His way is perfect. When a door closes – there is a reason.
I have learned to trust Him in beautiful ways. I have also learned that if you want to
hear God laugh – tell Him your plans.
Journey on!

My journey with Jesus and the Methodist Church began in
Montgomery County, VA. It was at an early age, at a little
Methodist church, where the first song I learned was “Jesus
Loves Me.” It is still my favorite hymn. It tells how Jesus
really loves me. I was raised in Speedwell Methodist
Church, which is my home church. It was here that I
accepted Christ as my Savior in 1955.
As I take retirement, I look forward to ways that I can
serve Jesus and the Church.
There are so many people I want to thank who have helped me through the years.
People who helped this farm boy make it through. A special thanks to Speedwell
UMC for their prayers and support, to my wife Louise and my children, to Reverends
Ted Anders and Randy Morris, to all my District Superintendents, and to all the
Bishops under whom I have served. I give special thanks to the newly named Grace
Circuit (Brumley Gap UMC, Greendale UMC, Rich Valley UMC) where I will serve
in retirement. Thanks to Henry Holt for giving me the chance to serve in the Fries
Methodist Circuit (all six of them) and the many friends I made on that circuit.
Finally, thanks to Kim and Jim Goddard and Emmit Wilson for helping me to get to
Associate Membership.
I hope to serve my Lord for many years yet.

with thanks, and I wished that I had realized that 19 years
before. Over the time I’ve been in Holston, I appreciated all of

encouragement. I also appreciate the wonderful time that I have had being involved in
camping ministry. It’s a glorious time when people make professions of faith, and I
have had the privilege of seeing God at work in this way.
During this time I have had the support of a loving family, and I know that I will

have served in the Wytheville District of the Holston
Conference for the past 32 years. God has allowed me the
opportunity to serve some of the finest churches who taught me so much about
discipleship and faith. Each congregation where I was appointed was the home of
people who loved Jesus and their church. Among my countless blessings and gifts
during this incredible journey is my wife, Carol Sue. She was been my best supporter
and committed partner in ministry. She has turned every parsonage into a home for
our son, Shawn, and daughter, Michelle. We are blessed to have six wonderful
grandchildren as well. God is so good ...
Loving God and his church has been an illuminating experience in so many ways.
The greatest among these has been sharing Christ with others. As I take leave of this
active part of my ministry, I do not anticipate anything other than a greater
opportunity to serve Christ in whatever capacity he places before me. I look to the

Decades ago I got to traverse the length and breadth of the
conference with the Holston Conference Drama Team with
several other youth who are now familiar faces in our
Conference. That play was Don Q Rides Again. I came into
ministry with a sense of that same adventure; a sense that
there were places to go with unusually grand things to see, marvelous people to meet
and some challenges to confront. I have not been disappointed. I have hoped to share
that the living Lord really will have a relationship with all sorts of people; a
relationship which will transform how we live and act as well as give us a peace
within.
It has been a great blessing to have the love and support of my wife Marion. She
also found herself on this adventure and has been an uplifter and caregiver wherever
we have served. The gift of three kids who accepted that home was anywhere in the
conference was a glorious thing. The help of loving people in the churches who
helped raise them and who showered them with attention and stuff is a permanent part
of our family.
Perhaps it is a short attention span which made me really appreciate all of the
varied responsibilities and opportunities of pastoral ministry. I’ve agonized over it, but
I love preaching, teaching, and meetings. I’ve been blessed to be a part of camping
ministries for 40 years. Youth work, older adult work, mission teams, work teams,
grief counseling, community organizing, teaching college classes, radio time and just
hanging around with folk have all been fulfilling. I have been honored to be pastor in
both times of joy and of sorrow.
Many prepared the way for me and have helped me along the way. I pray that I
have done that for others.

Our ministries will not end, but simply change. I intend to spend a lot of time
catching up as a grandfather, writing, and taking care of Judy to the best of my ability.
To my young clergy sisters and brothers, beloved, be diligent in your calling and

Retirement has become a time of reflection and
assessment of the past 47 years of ministry. The years I
have spent in the pastoral ministry have afforded me the
privilege of meeting and ministering to many people and
being ministered to by many. I am blessed to have been a
part of their lives, however limited, in their Christian journey.
It is my prayer that I have been able to be of help to the churches I have served and
that they have grown in the knowledge of Christ. It is also my prayer that I have
ministered unto the Lord and brought glory to His name. When I stand before Him on
that day, my desire is that He will say, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant:
thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things:
enter thou into the joy of thy Lord.”
My years in ministry have also given me the opportunity to interact and serve with
many dedicated ministers, who have faithfully served, and are faithfully serving, the
Lord and His church.
I am very thankful for my wife, who has been my partner and helper during these
years, and as we enter another phase in our earthly journey, our desire is to continue
in His service.
