Organic Materials Review Institute
The Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) evaluates the
acceptability of products for organic use. Its evaluation process now
takes NOP specifications into consideration. Many organic certifiers
have long relied on OMRI’s lists to simplify the process of determining

Washington State Department of Agriculture
The Washington State Department of Agriculture also has an organic
program that looks at the acceptability of products for organic use, and
maintains a list of products they have determined are NOP compliant.

Aphids getting you down? Got the Powdery Mildew blues? Take
courage! Achieving organic control of pests IS possible! It is well
known within the sustainability movement that an integrated
approach to pest control is the best way to go. Technically, the term
is “Integrated Pest Management” (IPM), and it basically means
applying several well-considered methods of control to address a
pest problem. If you are new to organic growing, the big change
will be from the “silver bullet” approach (using one, highly potent
chemical to achieve total eradication), to a “systems” approach;
viewing a farm or garden (and its’ inhabitants) as a part of the
greater ecosystem. This kind of systems approach will expand your
view of how to address a problem to include cultural control (iephysical manipulation of the environment by pruning, placement of
plants, cleaning, etc.), biological control (ie-using natural enemies
including insect predators, disease, and parasites), and applying leastharmful pesticides derived from natural sources. IPM requires good
conscientious observation, knowledge of pest life cycles, tolerance for
minimal damage, and patience.
Identify Your Pest
Time to play detective. Where did the holes in your leafy green come
from? Before you blame the slugs, take time to observe. Soon you may
discover that the holes are coming from the birds. Knowing what pest
you’re trying to control will of course determine what methods you
use. Assuming your pest is not as obvious as a bird, you may need
to use a trap or head out to the garden at night with a flashlight to
identify your pests. Try reference cards, books or websites to help you
find the name of mysterious pests. Once you know your pest, you can
effectively alter the pest’s habitat or reproductive cycle.

Natural Predators
Have aphids? Ladybug larva can eat as many as 1000 aphids in
a single day. This is a classic example of nature at work, creating
balance in your garden. In addition to ladybugs there are many other
organisms that can help in similar ways.
Beneficial organisms attack pests, not people, plants or pets. Tricia
reviews how easy it is to effectively use them in two videos: Beneficial
Insect - General Predators & Beneficial Insect - Parasitic Organisms.
Beneficials are not pesticides; they need some lead time to work. They
should be used as part of an integrated system of pest management
which also includes fertilizing, hygienic cultural practices, planting
pest-resistant varieties, intercropping, proper irrigation, monitoring,
trapping, etc. For maximum effectiveness, beneficial releases should
begin when pest densities are at low to medium levels.
If your pest problem is already severe, it may be better to apply a safe,
short-residual pesticide to kill a portion of the pests and then introduce
the beneficials. Use the chart on the following page to help determine
which beneficial insect or parasitic organism will fit your needs.
Once you’ve introduced a beneficial insect population, you want them
to stick around. Beneficial insects are a natural army of pest control
allies and it is important to provide them with suitable living conditions
if you expect their help. In addition to providing pests to eat, provide
pollen from a hedgerow. Watch Tricia’s video on How To Plant a
Hedgerow where she grows our Good Bug Blend (at right). In order to
reproduce, beneficial insects need nectar and pollen. If they do not find
these in your field (and they are very particular about which flowers
they want), they will leave and may not return.

In their adult stage, these insects need pollen and
sugars, which are often not present in sufficient
quantities. Beneficial insects especially need additional

Pollinators
Bees are essential for pollination. Mason Bee colonies
can do over 200 times the pollinating of similarly
sized honeybee colonies. Unlike honeybees, Orchard
Mason Bees (Osmia ligneria) are small, black, gentle
bees. These native bees are excellent pollinators, it is
their primary purpose in life. Orchard Mason Bees
build their nests in holes in wood, not in hives for
producing honey. Native to most of the continental US, they are not social bees like honeybees, and will not bother humans or pets.
Keeping Bees In the wild, Mason Bees find holes in trees to nest in; they build their homes
using mud, hence the name Mason. To invite them to stay around your garden you only need

Use these traps in agriculture, food
processing, livestock operations,
waste management, horse ranches,
recreation, and home. The operation
of these traps is a two step process.
First, the flies enter the trap in an
effort to access an odorous bait. Then the flies travel towards

About Shippable Nursery Stock Orders Seasonal products (perishable plants) are stocked for a limited duration (harvest and weather
dependent). Orders are filled on a first-come first-serve basis. Due to
these factors and limited storage space, we are unable to accommodate
any delay ship dates, beyond our set shipping schedule. We strongly
recommend that you place your order as early as possible after receiving

Catalog Pricing Although we do our best to maintain published prices
for an entire catalog term, product prices and bulk seed increments may

Shipping Information Simply put, we are always looking for the
cheapest method of shipping available for your order. Most items ship
via standard FedEx or USPS by weight and zone method. Our call center or website can calculate your shipping. To get a rate quote for items
listed with a ship method "Truck" or “Drop Ship,” give us a call and we
will find you the cheapest freight.
Drop Ships Items shipping directly from the vendor are noted as such.
Drop ship orders will often be delivered within two weeks of ordering,
but in some cases these orders can take longer due to product availability
and weather delays. Once an order has shipped, your order cannot be
cancelled.
Shipping to Hawaii, Guam, Alaska, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin
Islands Items generally ship to these locations via USPS Priority Mail.
USPS does not guarantee transit time and Parcel Post can take up to
several weeks to AK, HI, and PR. FedEx Service is available but is generally quite a bit more expensive. Boat and Barge shipments for palletized
orders are available. Call for a quote. Perishable items and beneficial
insects cannot ship to these locations.
Turnaround Time and Back Orders Orders where all items are instock typically ship within 1–2 business days, but turnaround time does
vary by season. Expedited shipping options are available upon request.
Tracking Your Order If shipping by FedEx, a tracking number will
be e-mailed to you the day after your order ships. Please contact us immediately if you think your shipment is lost or if your shipment arrives
damaged.
Receiving Your Order When your order arrives, open the package
immediately and inspect the content against the packing slip; it is especially important to check viability on living plants. Notify us immediately of any shortages or damage, do not discard any damaged items or
shipping cartons. The shipping company may require an inspection prior
to approving any claim.
For truck shipments Do not sign for the shipment until you have confirmed the shipment is complete and has no apparent and/or concealed
damage. If there is a shortage or damage it must be noted on the proof of
delivery, or we cannot accept responsibility.

everything we can to reduce, reuse,

When it comes to shipping, you may be
interested to know that we reuse cardboard,
collected from local businesses, as packing material.
We feed it through an expensive, German-made,
heavy duty machine which shreds it into a cushy
pattern. You can recycle it as you would cardboard
or make it into an art project or animal bedding as
some customers have reported doing! Thanks for

Return Policy
3-Day Return Policy For Perishable Merchandise Within 3 days
of purchase, you can return any perishable merchandise that doesn’t meet your
standard. We guarantee the perishable merchandise we sell (included but not
limited to, garlic bulbs, flower bulbs, seed potatoes, onion transplants...etc.)
to be in good, viable condition when we sell them. However, because these
items will deteriorate over time, we strongly encourage you to inspect them
carefully upon receipt and plant them without any delay. Should there be any
quality problem, you must notify us within 3 (three) days of your purchase, or
of receipt, whichever the latter, to request an exchange or a refund. Beyond 3
days from the date of purchase, or of receipt, whichever the latter, perishable
merchandise is not returnable nor refundable under any circumstances.
30-Day General Return Policy Within 30 days of purchase, or of receipt,
whichever the latter, you can return any non-perishable item for a full refund
(excluding shipping charges if any), provided the product is in unused, like-new
condition and in its intact original packaging. Otherwise, we reserve the right not
to take the item back unless you agree to a 20% restocking fee (item will be sold
as “used” and/or “open-box” at a corresponding discount). Special orders, dropshipped items, custom mixes, custom cuts (i.e. greenhouse poly, shade cloth...etc.),
live plants, nursery stock and beneficial insects are not returnable nor refundable
unless there is an obvious problem upon purchase (if so, contact us immediately).
For products that are covered under Manufacturer’s Warranty (Solo sprayers,
Young Mixer Proportioners...etc.), we will honor the manufacturers published
warranty. Items deemed “defective”, i.e. stopped working and/or broke after a few
days, must be inspected by a Customer Service associate or store staff member.
Replacement or credit will be issued if the item has not been misused or abused
and is still covered under the warranty time period.
Food Processing Items We must re-sell as “open box” (hence, at a
discount) any returned food processing item with an opened box, due to
hygiene concerns. Thus, a 15% restocking fee will apply.
Limited Replacement Guarantee For Dormant Bare-Root
Nursery Stock If your bare-root fruit or nut tree (incl. potted fig or
pomegranate), artichokes, asparagus, grape vines, kiwi vines, blueberries,
caneberries, strawberries, and horseradish does not leaf out in Spring, contact
our Customer Service by June 1st and return the dead plant to us for inspection.
We will issue you a credit for the paid price of that plant (excluding shipping
charges if any), provided it does not show damage (from rodent, mechanical...)
or root rot. This credit is redeemable toward the purchase of any other bareroot item of your choice the following season. We reserve the right to not
issue credit for replacement of already replaced items. This guarantee applies
only to Dave Wilson bare-root or potted trees (fruit and nut - except Pecan
(see disclaimer), artichokes, asparagus, grape vines, kiwi vines, blueberries,
caneberries, strawberries, and horseradish. This guarantee does not apply to

Pheromones
Pheromone traps are used to monitor and/or disrupt the mating
activity of certain pest insects. A pheromone is a nontoxic speciesspecific scent produced by the female insect to attract the male.
Th is scent has been laboratory duplicated for particular insects
and concentrated in time-release “lures” that attract the male to a
sticky glue trap. Lures and traps are purchased separately or in trap
kits and arrive with full instructions for assembly and use. Two
different-shaped traps, Delta and Wing, are available in bulk. Each
is recommended for use with particular lures, as specified. If you
purchase extra lures, store them in the freezer until needed.
Pheromone Confusion Lures
Highly effective, confusion lures use pheromones to flood the
orchard with female scent, preventing the male from locating a
female and mating. Traps are only needed for monitoring.
Pheromone Glue Traps
Pheromone glue traps are used by orchardists, grain merchants and
home gardeners to “trap out” male insects thus preventing mating
and reducing the egg-laying capacity of the female. Trapping out
has proven useful for Codling Moth, Oriental Fruit Moth, Peach
Twig Borer, Grain Moth (especially in storage areas) and others.
Use 1–2 traps per tree in the home orchard. Commercial growers,
please ask about volume discounts.
As Monitoring
Pheromone traps are most often used commercially to monitor and
anticipate the mating activity of insects. By counting the insects trapped
over a given period and using data provided about the pest insect’s
cycles, you can determine the best time to release beneficial insects or
apply protective sprays. For monitoring use 1-3 traps per orchard. To
monitor grain moths, use 1 trap/30,000 cu ft of storage area.

Sticky Insect Traps
Many insects (including beneficial insects) are attracted to the color
yellow and organic growers have been using sticky yellow traps for
years in orchards, row crops, vines and greenhouses for pest control.
In low-dust environments, these traps are documented to be effective
for monitoring or trapping out leafhoppers, whiteflies, aphids, fruit
flies, leafminers, flea beetles, fungus gnats, cucumber beetles, etc. As
these traps also attract beneficial insects, it is recommended to use
them wisely. Blue sticky traps are used for thrips and leafminers. Green
traps attract thrips, flies and hoppers. The traps come in the form of
cards or tape. All have a brightly colored surface, coated on both sides
with special non-drying sticky glue. You can make your own traps or

disturbed. They overwinter as adults
in soil, in leaves, and in brushy or

Isomate CTT dispensers are similar to
Isomate C+ in performance, general
appearance and packaging. However, with
Isomate CTT, each dispenser consists of 2
parallel tubes filled with pheromone and
joined and sealed at the ends. The gap in the
middle allows the Isomate CTT dispenser
to form a loop that can easily and quickly be
placed over the end of tree limbs or fruiting
spurs (pictured). They are faster and more
economical to apply than the traditional Isomate C+ dispensers and
are applied at half the number per acre. They also contain 5% more
pheromone and last 20 days longer. Use 200 of these new dual-lures
per acre every 140 days (every 110 days in hot weather). Apply within
one week of 90% petal fall. CA, AZ and NM growers may need 2

The C+ has a long history of success around
the world. It attaches by twisting around

CYD-X Infects and kills the larvae of codling moths
Each virus particle is naturally microencapsulated within a protein occlusion body
(OB) that protects it to some degree from
degradation. Lab studies have determined
that a dose of 1 to 2 OBs is all that is required
to cause a lethal infection in half of the
codling moth larvae tested. A single ounce
of CYD-X biological insecticide contains
nearly one trillion OBs. CydX should be
applied at least twice during each larval
generation. For homeowners: One teaspoon of CYD-X
mixed with 5 gallons of water may be sprayed into the

Natural Insecticide Glossary
Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt)
There is a concern that the Bacillus thuringiensis
(Bt) genetically engineered into GMO corn, which
is killing monarch butterflies and other beneficial
insects, is the same Bt that organic gardeners have
used for years. This is not true. The Bt sprays that
we sell contain Bt bacteria spores that are naturally
encapsulated in a matrix that allows the toxin of
the Bt to be released only when it is ingested by an
organism with an alkaline pH gut, including the
targeted Lepidoptera order. Although monarch
butterflies belong to the Lepidoptera order, organic
gardeners only spray Bt on specific crops, such
as tomatoes, that are not normally food for wild
butterflies. (Monarch butterflies specifically need
milkweed.) Also, the Bt spray that we sell degrades
quickly in sunlight, so even if a butterfly consumed
the recently sprayed pollen of a tomato, there
would only be a few days when it might consume
the active Bt. By far the most-used biological
insecticides are Bts. Bt is a naturally occurring
bacteria with many powerful insect-specific strains.
Like other biologicals, Bts biodegrade in sunlight
and may require reapplication.
Biological Insecticides
“Biologicals” are naturally-occurring insecticidal
organisms, usually bacteria, which attack only
specific pests. Biologicals are, and always have been,
central to organic pest control because they are
highly effective, insect-specific, biodegradable and
nontoxic to humans, animals, beneficial insects and
the environment. They will not cause secondary
pest outbreaks. Biologicals are the foremost
organic choice for the control of many pests, such
as caterpillars, grasshoppers, fungus gnats, fire
blight, and more. Biologicals work best if the pH
of your spray water is between 5 and 6, and if they
are applied in early morning or late afternoon. The
addition of a spreader/sticker such as NuFilm (see
Foliar Spray Enhancers) will significantly extend
the life of many biologicals such as Bt. However,
they are still short-lived in sunlight and may require
reapplication under heavy pest pressure.

NATURAL INSECTICIDES
Botanical Insecticides/Fungicides
Made from plants which are shown to have
pesticide qualities. Generally, some of these
materials, while safer to the user and the
environment than chemical pest controls, are
very strong and should be used as a last resort.
Used inappropriately, these stronger botanicals,
like pyrethrin, can cause more trouble than they
relieve by upsetting your biological balance and
triggering secondary pest outbreaks. For severe or
transitional situations they can be fully warranted
on a temporary basis. Use a respirator, protective
clothing, and follow the label instructions exactly.
Neem Extracts
This botanical insecticide is extracted from
the seed of the tropical neem tree. The active
ingredient, Azadirachtin, repels, prevents molting
and suppresses feeding. Does not harm humans,
birds, plants, or earthworms. Neem has been used
for centuries against aphids, whiteflies, thrips,
hornworms, leafminers, gypsy moths, weevils,
webworms, loopers, sawflies and more. Neem is
most effective against insects which pass through
all stages of metamorphosis. Use as a last resort.
Neem extract can harm beneficial insects.
Neem Oil: Broad Spectrum
Insecticide/Miticide
A unique, broad-spectrum pesticide which acts
as an insecticide, fungicide, and miticide. As
fungicides, they are most effective when used
as a preventative or when disease pressure is

is important. As an insecticide/miticide, use when
insect/mite pressure is light to moderate. Suffocates
insects and mites on contact and is especially
effective on whiteflies, aphids and other soft bodied
insects. Also acts as a repellent. Since this product
is an oil, it can also kill bees if they are exposed to
direct treatment so we recommend applying this
product when they are not visiting your plants.
Oil products
Can be used as dormant oils, growing-season sprays,
or spray adjuvants for smothering such pests as
overwintering scales, mites, aphids, and peach twig
borer. May be unnecessary for most small scale
users unless past experience has indicated a serious
problem with these pests. There are many orchards
which are doing well and have never been sprayed
with oils. In commercial applications or serious pest
outbreaks, the use of oils may prove necessary.
Pyrethrins
This broad-spectrum, contact-kill insecticide
is an extract of the crushed, dried flowers of
Chrysanthemum cinerariifolium, a perennial
daisy-like plant from Kenya. Pyrethrin has at least
6 active insecticidal qualities. It is known for its
unique “knock-down” quality which stuns flying
insects, causing them to quickly fall to the ground.
Pyrethrin is also called an “exciter’’ because it gets
insects out of protected hiding spots by irritation,
exposing them to predators and bringing them into
contact with the spray. Insects have never developed
resistance to it in over 100 years of use. Pyrethrin is
used against a wide range of insects including ants,
aphids, army worms, beetles (asparagus, blister,
cucumber, Colorado potato, flea, Mexican bean),
cabbage loopers, caterpillars, cockroaches, earwigs,
fleas, flies, harlequin bugs, fruit flies, leafrollers,
leafhoppers, mosquitoes, psyllids, thrips, ticks,
whiteflies, & more. Pyrethrin is toxic to fish and
has some ill effect on beneficials. However, for the
user, it is far safer than chemicals and is one of the
safest botanicals available. Quickly broken down in
the sunlight, so it has a short residual in the field.
For this reason it may require repeated applications.
Spinosad
A nerve and stomach poison derived via
fermentation from the naturally occurring
bacterium Saccharopolyspora spinosa. New
chemistry represents an alternative to Bt for worm
control and offers excellent control of targeted pests
and low toxicity to nontarget organisms, including
most beneficial insects. It has a low mammalian
toxicity and helps conserve beneficials.

Fungus & Disease Control Glossary
Biological Fungicides Beneficial microbes protect plants
from soil-borne pathogens, like pythium, botrytis, as well as air
borne pathogens like fine blight, powdery mildew, and more. Unlike
some mineral-based fungicides, they supplement rather than harm
biological life in soil.
Botanical Insecticides/Fungicides Made from plants
with pesticide qualities. These materials, while safer to the user and the
environment than chemical pest controls, are very strong and should
be used as a last resort. Used inappropriately, these stronger botanicals,
like pyrethrin, can cause more trouble than they relieve by upsetting
your biological balance and triggering secondary pest outbreaks. For
severe situations they can be used on a temporary basis. Use respirator,
protective clothing, follow label instructions exactly.
Neem Oil Best used as a preventative or in low disease pressure
situations for fungus problems. Use to control diseases such as powdery
mildew, anthracnose, botrytis, rust, leaf spot, and flower blight.
Oil Products Used as dormant oils, growing-season sprays or
spray adjuvants for smothering pests such as overwintering scales,
mites, aphids, peach twig borer and some fungal diseases. May be
unnecessary for small scale users unless experience shows a serious
problem with these pests. Many orchards do well and have never
been sprayed with oils. In commercial applications or serious pest
outbreaks, the use of oils may be necessary.
Mineral Fungicides Generally considered acceptable for
organic production, but should be used as a last resort. Other options
are highly preferable to mineral-based fungicides because they do
not harm beneficial microbial populations and leave soil’s “immune
system” intact. If you do use mineral fungicides, follow the label to
the letter. As some people are sensitive to sulfur and copper based
materials, we recommend the use of respirator masks and protective
clothing. Note that copper is alkaline with a tendency to accumulate
in the soil, so minimize its use. Sulfur, on the other hand, is acidic
and is assimilated by the plant and soil as a nutrient.
Copper Fungicides The strongest and most broad-spectrum
fungus controls we offer. Use only when other techniques have failed.
Copper can be detrimental to plants and soil when applied in rates
above the recommended amounts. Often used in the dormant season.
Read the label!
Sulfur Fungicides & Miticides Sulfur is broad-spectrum
with little detrimental environmental effects. Can be irritating to the
eyes, ears, and nose during application, use protective clothing and
masks. Used for the control of powdery mildew on grapes and other
crops and is effective against most species of pest mites, brown rot,
rust, and scab. Often used in the dormant season.

New to Beekeeping?
Where Do I Get Bees?
Get a good book, join your local beekeepers’ association, and set-up
two hives! Why two? How will you know what’s normal? Comparable
observation is the best tool for beginning beekeepers. Paint the outside
(only the outside) of your hives with a clear varnish (try PolyWhey) or
paint to increase the durability of your hive. Did you know that bees
can distinguish between colors? If you’re getting more than one hive,
consider painting them different colors so the bees can easily identify
their home & colony.
There are hundreds of apiaries or bee yards nation-wide. Many sell
packaged bees and some can mail bees through the postal service!
We recommend one three pound package of bees with a queen per
hive. Depending on the weather, these packages may be available
in April or May and reserving your package of bees ahead of time is
recommended. You may also be able to collect an unwanted swarm
of bees from a neighbor. Contact your local beekeepers’ association to
find out if there’s a swarm catching crew and whether you can assist.

Why 8-frames and not 10 like commercial bee yards? Once full of comb
and honey, a super (the wooden box full of frames) can weigh up to 90 lbs! This is an
unmanageable amount of weight for many people. So we’ve designed this hive to hold 8
frames per box which is more manageable for a hobby beekeeper.

We’re proud of the quality of materials used to construct our beehive.
With the exception of the cedar hive stand, the hive is constructed from hand selected
Ponderosa pine from the Northwest. To prevent warping, each board is moisture metered
before it is precision milled. Uniform interlocking joints add strength and holes are predrilled before nailing to prevent splitting during assembly. You’ll receive a fully assembled
hive and we want you to know we’ve done our best sourcing our materials.
What’s in a frame? A beehive with top bar frames allows you to remove and inspect
the comb for brood development, pest monitoring, and honey production. Our frames
come pre-assembled with a plasticell foundation coated in beeswax. Bees can more quickly
draw their honey comb when given a foundation to work off of and this is most common in
commercial apiaries. Given a little extra time, honey bees can draw their own comb within
an empty frame.
What’s in the Beehive Kit:
Copper Roof This hive cover protects the hive from the weather and invaders with style.
Inner cover constructed of wood frame & sturdy masonite is strong, durable & will not
shrink thanks to mortise and tenon construction. Helps insulate hive from heat and cold.
Two 6 5/8” Tall Honey Supers with taper cut handholds made from ponderosa pine.
This is where the bees will store their extra honey which may be harvested by the beekeeper.
Add the first super after both brood boxes have at least 12 frames full of comb. Add the
second super after the first super is half way full of honey.
Sixteen 6 1/4” Top Bar Frames with plasticell foundation (which is easily removable).
Metal Queen Excluder Precisely spaced welded wires and bound metal edges will keep
your queen in the brood boxes and prevent her from laying eggs in the honey supers.
Two 9 5/8” Tall Brood Boxes with taper cut handholds made from ponderosa pine.
This is where the bees make their home, where the queen lays eggs, and the bees store
enough honey and pollen for the hive to survive during winter. The beekeeper should not
“harvest” honey from the two brood boxes. Start with one brood box. When 6 frames are
full of comb, add the second brood box.
Sixteen 9 1/4” Top Bar Frames with plasticell foundation (which is easily removable).
Solid Bottom Board & wooden entrance reducer made from ponderosa pine. Seal up
the bottom of your hive with a bottom board. Use the entrance reducer to keep critters out
and to help the guard bees keep other insects out of their hive.
Rustic Cedar Hive Stand Keep your hive dry and off the ground with rot-resistant
cedar. Either the solid bottom board (included) or a screened bottom board (see online) will
fit atop this stand.
Boardman Entrance Feeder When pollen supplies are low, you may need to feed your
bees. This feeder makes refilling easy without opening the hive. Simply put a sugar syrup in
a standard mason jar (not included), screw on the perforated metal cap (included), and set it
in the boardman stand. Fits very snugly at the entrance of the hive.
