Community Vision Celebrates National Disabilities
Awareness Month by Unveiling “Operation 3,000”
October is National Disabilities Awareness Month, a time to celebrate the advancements that have
been made to further the civil rights of people living with disabilities. This year marks the 16th
Anniversary of the American’s with Disabilities Act, a groundbreaking law that is working toward
removing barriers from the lives of people with disabilities, allowing them to live more independent
and inclusive lives. While we want to celebrate this great month, we are all too aware of the
problems that confront people with disabilities right here in Oregon. Currently, there are over
3,000 families on a state waiting list to receive services for a disabled family member.
We can’t think of a better way to celebrate National Disabilities Awareness Month than to unveil
“Operation 3,000”, a bold new initiative that aims to eliminate Oregon’s waiting list and provide
services that will help people with disabilities live independently, with dignity - one person at a time.
“Clearly, there are many people with disabilities in Oregon that are asking for help,” said CV
Executive Director Joe Wykowski. “We, quite simply, are just doing our best to respond to their
plea.”
In order to increase our support base, Community Vision will be implementing new fundraising
initiatives, including expanded efforts in the areas of grants, foundation giving, major gifts, planned
giving and a new fundraising luncheon (“Home for the Heart”). To be a part of this bold new goal

CV Announces Annual Fundraising Luncheon
On February 20, 2007, Community Vision will host the first annual Home for the Heart
fundraising luncheon at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry. The event will raise funds
to provide services to the 3,000 families on Oregon’s waiting list who are yet to receive support
services for a disabled family member.
“We are very excited to announce the Home for the Heart luncheon,” said CV Executive
Director Joe Wykowski. “There are many families in need of support, and this event will help us
reach out to them.”
This annual event will bring together Community Vision’s supporters, staff members, along with
those benefiting from CV’s services. The luncheon will be from 11:30am to 1:00pm, and will
feature guest speakers that are connected to Community Vision’s mission of providing services
that empower Oregonians with disabilities to live, work and thrive in the communities of their
choice.
Tables that seat eight to ten guests are available to purchase for a $1,500 donation – individual

Dear Community Vision Friends and Supporters I hope this edition of our newsletter finds you well. The fall always seems a
great time of year to think of transition, and it rings true for Community Vision
as well. So much of our efforts started with a few seeds of vision and commitment many years ago, and it’s time to continue our growth and further meet the
needs of individuals with disabilities in a bigger and better way.

We have been very lucky to add a number of talented new staff members to our
management team. I have never felt better about the depth and ability of our
agency - thanks to so many of our dedicated staff, volunteers and board members.
Currently, our Family Visioning Program is underway. We’ve had many new
referrals to serve individuals living with their families who want support inside the
family home or want to live in their own apartment or home in the future. We
look forward to this opportunity to support more families.
This fall we will proceed one person or family at a time while remembering that
over 3,000 individuals and families are waiting for services.

CV Teams Up with Mayor Potter to Break Down Barriers
On August 17th, Executive Director Joe Wykowski, CV clients Linda Rutherford and John Calhoun, and a number of
Community Vision staff and supporters participated in a public forum hosted by the Mayor’s office. The public meeting
was attended by Mayor Tom Potter, who has shown great interest in the needs of individuals with disabilities.
The mayor’s office asked for this public meeting to be held as part of his larger initiative titled “Vision PDX” which
includes the public voice of all Portlanders to assist in the planning of our
city’s future.
Both a general forum with the mayor and small planning groups were
conducted to document the need of Portlanders with disabilities in respect
to what assistance would be needed to assure each person who has a
disability can participate in Portland’s future plan.
In addition to identifying obstacles and opportunities for participation in
the planning process, the small groups documented many daily barriers
that need to be overcome including to provide each and every individual
with the opportunity to participate in community life.
The overall feedback from all the participants was favorable and will
foster a unique opportunity for dialogue with the mayor’s office in the
future.

Cycle for the Vision: June 4, 2006
This year’s sixteen Cycle for the Vision riders completed a 100-mile bike ride around beautiful Lake Tahoe to raise both
money and awareness for Community Vision’s programs. The team was coached by Sandy Earl, who brought a wealth of
cycling experience and a supportive demaeanor to this year’s event. Every cyclist came to this team with different cycling
skills and abilities -- and each one crossed the finish line in Lake Tahoe! We are so very proud and appreciative of them and
all of their hard work in support of people with disabilities.
John Calhoun, an individual supported by Community Vision’s programs, went down to Lake Tahoe to cheer the team on.
He met them at the finish line, outfitted in a Cycle for the Vision jersey. John currently owns his own home and is a selfadvocate, who promotes civil rights for people with disabilities. He is one of many courageous people at Community Vision.

This year’s riders included Joe Wykowski, Joe Bauschelt, TC Cairns, Margaret Shoemaker, Dave & Stacy Bellwood, Chip
& Mary Horsley, Rebecca Miller, Russell Brownyer, Miriam Steierman, Chris & Jacy Booren, Daniel Rockholm and Lelah
O'Shaughnessy. Each of our 15 riders was paired with an individual that Community Vision serves, providing an opportunity
for the riders to be personally invloved with the organization and the individuals that we are serving.

Tee Time: 4th Annual Vision on the Green a Huge Success
The 4th Annual Vision on the Green was held on September 15, 2006 in support of Community Vision and the people we
serve. The event featured a great day of championship golf at the world-class Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in North Plains,
Oregon. Over 150 golfers, volunteers and Community Vision staff members came out to have a good time, but also to raise
funds for those supported by Community Vision.
The event was presented by Washington Mutual and supported by Intex Custom Homes, Olson Institutional Pharmacy and
Olson Medical Services. The Vision on the Green will have a lasting impact on the lives of people with disabilities - the
event raised over $60,000!!! We would like to thank all of the sponsors, committee members, participants and volunteers
for coming out and making this event possible.

Jim Staley, an individual supported by Community Vision’s programs attended the day of the event, and was treated to a
tour of the entire golf course by Community Vision volunteer Rebecca Miller. An awards banquet sponsored by Intex
Custom Homes followed the golfing and featured a live and silent auction, raffle drawings and a presentation on the work
that CV does every day in the local community.

Arlene Needs Your Help!
Not only is Arlene one of the many people that Community
Vision supports, but she is also an amazing local artist. As
you can imagine, on such a limited budget, it is difficult to
pay for the many supplies needed to express herself
through her paintings. Arlene has a garage sale every
Friday to raise money to pay for art supplies and other
living expenses. While the garage sale is only during the
summer months, she is always looking for donations for
next year’s sales. Arlene recently chose to move into a
group-home setting to accomodate the support she needs.
Because of this, she has had to sell all of her belongings,
but doesn’t want to stop painting. Arlene is looking for an
area to call her art studio - a place where she can store her
supplies and work her magic!! If you can help her in any
way with the garage sale or an art space, please contact

Community Vision at A Midsummer Night’s Dream
This annual charity benefit was held Thursday, July 27th.
The annual grand opening of the NW Natural Street of
Dreams was an elegant and lively black tie charity benefit
that provided the opportunity to raise over $50,000 for
twelve local charities. Community Vision is proud to be
one of the benefiting charities for the event and hosted the
Stone Ridge Custom Homes, Inc. house. The night
featured a live performance by local jazz artist David
Cooley, dinner, drinks and dancing in the streets amidst
these most exquisite homes.

Since 1989, Community Vision has provided services for individuals moving from nursing
homes, institutions, homes of aging parents and people who are experiencing a life crisis.
Community Vision is currently building an endowment fund. Our goal is to ensure that

work at jobs they chose over the course of their lifetimes.
