Change OF watch NORDHAVN BROKERAGE NEWS Issue One Where do you turn when it’s time to sell your proven NORDHAVN? June 2008 We know who they are. It is not uncommon for us to put seller and buyer together in a couple of weeks. Boating offers challenges that reward those who venture offshore. Selling your NORDHAVN need not be an adventure in uncharted waters. Sure, you can list your yacht with whomever you choose. However, bringing your listing back to Nordhavn makes sense in so many ways. First, we have a current list of every customer in the world who is looking for your model, outfitted exactly like yours. Second, these customers are ready to buy. Avoiding the up to two year build time has real appeal to a large number of buyers. Nordhavn 64 - 2007 "Samurai" ready to go in Dana Point, CA Third, we spend over a quarter million dollars annually on advertising previously owned Nordhavns. It’s good for us and good for you. Independent brokers can’t spend that kind of money, or cover the large number of marine magazines Nordhavn does. We have about two dozen brokers with vast knowledge of cruising and of the boating industry and contributing much to Nordhavn’s continued growth. Using history as a guide, Nordhavns have a remarkable resale value offering owners and buyers some great deals like the featured boat this quarter: “Samurai” a custom Nordhavn 64 built in 2007. She was featured in the third issue of Circumnavigator 2008-2009 pages 32-43. She has been expertly cared for and her equipment list is extensive. The best dealmaker is just a phone call away. The advertising budget for Nordhavn brokerages is over $250,000 a year and growing. Nordhavn brokers reach out to prospective buyers through a variety of ways in order to generate interest in your yacht. Other brokerages have to limit their exposure of listings simply because they can’t afford it. Doing something well adds value to a Properly presenting your boat to a prospective buyer requires in-depth knowledge of the yacht. Nordhavns are systems-intensive, necessitating a much greater degree of product knowledge than you’ll find from the average boat salesperson. Nordhavn brokers know exactly how the boat is built and performs, and they know how to close the deal on value, not price. service business, that’s why we always go the extra mile. It has worked for us in the past, and it will work for you. Whether you’re buying or selling, getting the “best price” on your Nordhavn means working with the best representation. The Nordhavn sales team knows more about Nordhavn boats and more about the new and resale markets than any other marine brokerage in any port or harbor. Factory-trained, knowledgeable and passionate, Nordhavn brokers bring to the table an expertise beyond that of the “generalist” boat salesperson. For sellers, that’s good. Your Nordhavn will be market-priced, widely advertised and properly presented to select buyers wherever in the world they are. But don’t confuse “market-priced” with “low priced.” As only about two dozen Nordhavns are currently for sale around the world, the scarcity of this top quality passagemaker enables previously owned Nordhavns to command a premium price. Ascertaining that price requires an understanding of not only local markets, but of all markets around the world. In fact, some Nordhavns have actually appreciated in value. The Nordhavn sales team is a network of marine professionals on a global scale. For buyers, that’s even better. No matter what you’re buying, you always want the “best price” and you certainly don’t want to overpay for anything. Again, the indepth product knowledge of your Nordhavn broker gives you options as you make your buying decision. You’ll be apprised of the true condition of the boat, what has been done and what may need to be done. Your Nordhavn broker will also show and demonstrate the true value of the Nordhavn you’re considering. Quality is always found in the details, and it’s good to know that your salesperson knows what and where the details are. Your Nordhavn broker’s involvement doesn’t end with your signed check. After the sale, you’ll be trained on how to use and operate all the systems, what to do if something goes wrong, and how to maintain everything so nothing does go wrong. Nordhavn brokers can give you a “distilled history” of your yacht, and will welcome you into the larger boating community. Most importantly, Nordhavn brokers stay in touch with you all the time. It is not uncommon for our Nordhavn team members to guide their customers through the purchase of three or four Nordhavns in the course of a cruising career. Thus, we welcome you to our brokerage newsletter, “Change of Watch.” In these pages we will share our experiences with you and present our latest collection of proven Nordhavn yachts. For additional information please see the brokerage section on our website: www.nordhavn.com Your satisfaction in buying or selling a Nordhavn is only a phone call away. www.nordhavn.com Nordhavn brokers “The follow-up from Nordhavn on my purchase of a previously owned Nordhavn has been extraordinary!” Nordhavn 47 owner, Dave Edwards If you own a Nordhavn, you’re part of the family. Many boat manufacturers disassociate themselves from used boat sales. The potential problems are too onerous, especially if the builder used cheap parts and systems in the first place. A few years can turn a poorly-built multi-million dollar yacht into a multi-million dollar hole-in-the-water. Nordhavn, conversely, builds boats to be multigenerational, a long-term treasure to exude quality and confidence beyond just one owner. When Dave Edwards decided to invest in a previously-owned Nordhavn 47, he got more than what he bargained for: he got “outstanding” support from Nordhavn and a complete handson education in the operation and care of his “new” N47. “I had grown up around boats,” explains Dave. “My father had a powerboat on the Great Lakes and we enjoyed the family trips and cruising. But it’s been many years – with the onset and success of my career – since I had done any serious boating. Now I have a wife and three boys, a well-established professional career plus bi-continental interests, and a strong desire and the time to incorporate a boat into our lifestyle. I wanted enough space onboard for all of us and the reliability of a well-built yacht, but I didn’t want to wait years for a brand new boat. After looking at several other yachts, the timing, my personal needs and my expectation of quality led me to Nordhavn and broker Dave Balfour.” As he does with all his clients, Dave Balfour, Nordhavn broker in the Rhode Island office, Dave Edwards enjoys his N47, taking a well-deserved break from his embarked on a extensive program of training professorship at Harvard and his art and science cultural center in Paris. Edwards in the care and feeding of the N47. Says Edwards, “If it wasn’t for Dave Balfour’s expert guidance through the sale and comprehensive knowledge of the boat, the sale would have never happened.” Just as important, Edwards says Nordhavn and Balfour helped him integrate into the boating community in general. “Since my family and I will be splitting our time between Boston and Paris,” says Edwards, “there will be unique issues that we will encounter. Balfour made me comfortable with everything about the boat and most everything else we’ll be dealing with.” Without a doubt, Nordhavn has earned its reputation for building world class trawlers and continues to strengthen its reputation for afterthe-sale support, new AND used. Call, click or visit your Nordhavn brokerage to experience what it means to be part of the Nordhavn Family. power up for you! Meet our NORDHAVN Northeast Sales Team Successfully buying or selling a Nordhavn requires an expertise you won't find at just any yacht brokerage. Every Nordhavn office is crewed by some of the most knowledgeable, experienced boating experts in the industry, and each of our brokers is completely fluent in Nordhavn systems, construction and performance. Our brokers make it easy: If you're buying, you can expect the best value. If you're selling, you can expect the best price. This issue of Change of Watch features the Nordhavn Northeast office experts: Dave Balfour, working out of P.A.E.’s northeast office, brings well over 20 years of nautical know-how to the Nordhavn sales experience. Avid fisherman, sailor, skiing aficionado and rumored to play a pretty mean bongo, Dave is one of the more technically/mechanically knowledgeable salesmen at Nordhavn, and his clients and colleagues consider him to be a true hands-on salesman. In fact, Nordhavn 43 owner Jim Fuller "hired" Dave to serve as crewmember on last year's Med Bound voyage specifically for his mechanical skills (well, that, AND his sparkling personality). Unassumingly, Dave describes himself as, “Pretty much just a water rat, frozen or not,” and it is that same unpretentious attitude that clients enjoy and benefit from as they consider their next Nordhavn. Contact Dave at dave.balfour@nordhavn.com. Also in the Northeast office we have Ben Sprague, Smart, nice, diplomatic, very level headed. He lives by the PAE credo of “do the right thing”. It’s a far cry from the typical practice of brokers in cutthroat brokerage houses, but Ben is happiest when he knows his clients have been treated fairly and served well. Ben began cruising at age15 aboard a 75year-old Danish cargo ketch from the Gulf of Mexico to the mosquito coast of Honduras. Since then his ocean voyaging has taken him from Newport to Newfoundland, across the Atlantic, half a dozen times to Bermuda and into the teeth of a late season hurricane in the Bermuda Triangle. Enduring hundred-knot winds and forty-foot seas Ben and three shipmates survived their boat’s sinking with an eight-foot dinghy, a lot of luck and the timely arrival of a Cuban tanker. Thirty years and a successful marine industry sales career later, Ben found Nordhavn Yachts a perfect fit for his firsthand knowledge of what works at sea: the best designed, engineered and built ocean going trawler available anywhere.
