With the .090" thickness, these members do not need to be made of galvanized steel. The four-box-rail framing of the front end, with full-box construction for both the upper and lower front rails, is another outstanding feature of this new body. Other engineering advances are described with the individual features. lsolated front torque boxes are separated from the floor toe riser and dash panel to keep vibrations from passenger compartment. This isolation helps keep power train vibration from passenger compartment vertical members for the front-end assembly. The large-size towers accommodate the wide spacing of the upper front suspension arm pivots and contribute to stability of the assembly. The towers are welded to the lower front rails and the aprons as well as to the No. 2 crossmember. The .075" steel used for the towers is more than double the thickness of the steel used for most body panels. No. 1 crossmember -This galvanized steel box-section crossmember extends across the car at the ends of the lower front rails to complete the fully boxed lower structure. lt is welded to the radiator support member as well. No. 2 crossmember-This is a galvanized steel box section, shaped as a yoke t0 pass beneath the engine. lt is welded directly to the spring tower on each side. Front engine mounts are installed on the crossmember. Fenders-These are bolted on. A splash shield with rubber flange is bolted in at the rear. Front fender apron and radiator support panel-0ne of the largest stampings in the 1966 Comet body is the lront fender apron and radiator support panel which extends full I t width across the front of the car. Adjustable roof bows (No. 2 and No. 3) can be adjusted vertically for better, tighter sealing above side windows. Nylon bushings are used at all pivot points for reduced friction, smoother operation and life-of-car lubrication. The 1966 Comet convertrbles are larger, roomier and all-new Single-piece webbing side pad-Side pads for the top are in construction as well as style. a single piece of cotton and nylon webbing which replaces the These convertibles have unique double-box side rails and special crossmembers which provide an exceptionally rigid floor and perimeter structure. 7-piece built-up pad cases. The webbing side pads serve to improve top appearance, reduce wrinkling of top when folded, reduce stack height of folded top. Connected front torque boxes are tied to the front body Cable retention for top sides-A flexible aircrafltype cowl panel by a welded-in steel plate. stainless-steel cable is used to hold the top sides against the side rails for more effective, pressure-type weathersealing. The cable extends from the header bow rearward to an eyebracket at the front of the rear rail. Mid-car crossmember ls welded to floor pan. Double-wall construction in the rear quarter area of the passenger compartment affords extra strength for the convertible body. The top mounting bracket enclosure at ends of the rear seat extends all the way to the floor. This is welded to the quarter panel and to the floor pan. Power top-The power top has a l2-volt electric motor to drive the hydraulic pump for the two power cylinders which are trunnion-mounted in the left and right side linkage arms. This arrangement allows the power cylinders to travel with the linkage arms to apply force directly into linkage for smoother operation, reduced wear. Precision-made bodies-Comet convertibles are assembled with use of a master c0ntr0l p0int system. ln thjs system, locating points are called 0ut 0n engineering drawings for common usage at all levels of tooling and fabrication. Both the b0dy sheetmetal and the convertible t0ps are made with this precision. As a result, the convertible tops are made with "zero tolerance," and the completed top can be installed on ihe precision-made body simply by attaching the tacking strip and by conneciing the top operating linkage. 5-ply top material-Top is laminated for maximum strength durability:(i) Layer of black cotton drill with attractive herringbone texture. (2) Layer of butyl rubber bond. (3) Woven cotton sheeting. (4) Diamond texture coating lamiand nated to the cotton sheeting. (5) Soil-resistant vinyl coating. All-vinyl bead over No. 4 bow is a dovetail assembly of two extruded vinyl strips. The U-shape bottom piece is laid over the top material and secured to the metal bow underneath. The second piece fits snugly into the channel. Anti-ballooning attachments at the No. 2 and No. 3 bows limit the amount the top material can raise when the car is traveling. These attachments, full loops of a durable material, extend full widih across the underside of the top at the bows. This provides flexibility while limiting the distance the top material can move away from the bow. Top boot is sewn padded vinyl in colors matching the car interior. Bright edge fasteners are used. 1966 Mercury Comet Hoods The sheetmetal hoods for Comet 202, Capri, Caliente and Cyclone models are double-panel construction with a full inner panel and with 3-ply edges forming a high-strength frame. The inner and outer panels are bonded with a mastic which expands and cures when heated (in baking oven) to provide a secure, continuous sound-absorbent seal' Easy access for service-The spacious engine compartment and extremely wide hood make the engine easily accessible for service. The hood measures 50" wide over the exterior sheetmetal. Extra strength built into the front-end sheetmetal eliminates need for braces between aprons and cowl' The hood latch, mounted on the hood panel, is a new design with a single-action release operation for easier opening' Comet Cyclone Twin ScooP GT Hood The molded glass-fiber hood for the 1966 Comet Cyclone GT models is stronger than the steel hoods and 16 pounds lighter. (0ptional for Cyclone). Both the outer panel and the inner panel are made of heavy-duty .090" thick fiber-glass sheets which are molded to required shape in matched steel dies. The finished panels are cemented by an epoxy adhesive. With this new hood-locking mechanism the customer gets double-latch security along with the convenience of a one- Fiber-glass reinforcements are installed at the hinge mounting areas at the back. These are attached with aluminum rivets. hand release. The double scissor-arm hinges, used with other Comet hoods, are installed. An aluminum wire screen is installed between The latch assembly includes a cam-type primary latch and an integral auxiliary (safety) latch. Both are positively springloaded for security. The striker is mounted on the hood lock support on the bodY. Pressing one lever under hood lip releases both the cam-type latch and auxiliary catch, simultaneously but independently' Counterbalanced hood hinges are double scissor-arm design incorporating a coil assist spring for easy opening and closing. The hinge assemblies receive the phosphate and oilcoat anti-corrosion treatment. This helps keep the compartment neat and rust-free on the showroom floor and helps preserve appearance of engine compartment in service' The hood insulator, standard for Caliente and steel-hood Cyclone models, is glass fiber with high binder content which pad makes a more stable material with greater durability' The is 1" thick with black surface. Mechanical retention is provided by plastic Plates. 1966 Comet Rear Deck Lid The rear deck lid for the larger 1966 Comet luggage compartment is double-panel construction with a full inner panel. The inner and outer panels are bonded with an intermittently applied mastic adhesive which expands and cures when heated (in the baking oven) for a secure bond. Highlights: Easier working, quieter rear deck-lid hinges with largediameter, low-friction roller and wide-track hinge arms' o Double-panel rear deck-lid construction with 3-ply edges. o o Reversible key and convenient pop-up when unlocked' o Counterbalanced through cam action of roller in hinge arm and adiustable torsion-bar springs. o Large deck lid affords spacious area for loading and unloading the enlarged 1966 Comet trunk compartment' o Easy 1-hand operation for either opening or closing' deck-lid lock is a lever type with a notched latch which engages the side of the square striker plate mounted on the Rear body. Key is reversible type. Double anti-corrosion protection is provided by zinc plating and the chromate dip' panels for radio shielding. Gounterbalanced hinges for i966 Comet rear deck-lid are a new design incorporating die-cast magnesium rollers which move easily and quietly in deep, wide tracks in the hinge arms. The hinge arms are 1-piece U'channel stampings made of %" thickcold-rolled steel. Shape of the hinge arm radius acts as a cam to set up the counterbalance function. The two torsion bars are mounted conventionally between the left and right hinge assemblies. Ends of the torsion bars serve as spindles for the rollers. The rollers move aft, winding up the bars, as the deck lid closes. The bars unwind and rollers move forward as the deck lid oPens' The turned-down end of each torsion bar engages the notchedhinge mounting bracket. Three notches in the bracket permit adjusting torsion-bar tension. Minimum tension in bars normally provides about 8" pop-up for deck lid. lncreased tension available in the 2nd or 3rd notches on the bracket provides full counterbalance action to raise lid all way up' The die-cast magnesium rollers have diameter of 2%" and overall width of l%". Magnesium offers maximum strength in relation to the weight. The channel for the rollers is 7q" deep and lyz" wide between the flange edges. 1966 Mercury Comet Seats The bucket seats for Comet seats offer features, comfort and appearance which are comparable to some higher priced cars. The seats are a balanced-spring design which has considerable cushioning effect built into the springs. Seat-back angle adjustment-Several degrees of angular change can be affected by adjusting the two setscrews beneath the hinged seat-back. The Comet bucket seat-backs fold straight forward to full-down position to provide maximum entrance room to rear compartment. Seat framing-Cushion and seat-back have stamped frame. The platform seat cushion springs have formed-wire elements running fore and aft with formed-wire V's at front and jack spring for additional support at each side. Seat-back springs-The formed-wire elements running horizontally are shaped to provide firm support at edges and softness in middle. All-foam padding ranges in thickness from j.%,, lo 3ya,, for the cushion, and from lVq,, to 3,, for the seat-back. Mercury Comet Front Seat Tracks* Comet bench-seat manual track is a new roller- and ballbearing track with an improved side latch control. This straight track with 5" travel is mounted direcfly to the floor pan riser. Fore-or-aft adjustment el can be made by dealer. The new design provides two solid ye,' diameler steel rollers and four ball bearings for each assembly. The rollers carry the weight while the four steel ball bearings serve as low-friction guides. Stop rivets are installed at each end of track to help keep seat from breaking loose on impact. l', Gomet bucket-seat manual track is a straight roller-bearing track with Va" sleel rollers and low-friction plastic slides. Travel is 5" with provision for l" fore-and-att adjustment, Power-operated bench-seat track adjusts seat through 5" fore-and-aft range and changes seat angle. The angular change is accomplished by raislng or lowering front of seat through 1.56" distance, rotating about pivots at the rear. Fore-and-aft adjustment is achieved by the dual rack and pinion mechanisms powered by a reversible permanent magnet electric motor. A rack and pinion mechanism with a bellcrank lifts the front of seat for angular tilt. Dealer can reposition seat track 1" fore or aft. Power-operated bucket-seat track has the rack and pinion mechanism on the left side and an equalizer to right. Angular change is controlled by the bellcrank linkage. Travel and tilt are same as for power bench seat. *Power seats are factory-installed as opt. extra-cost equipment. w 1966 Mercury Comet Glass . Highlights: o Electric wiper motor moved from passenger compartment to engine compartment to remove motor sounds o New rubber-cushioned wiper linkage is mounted in cowl plenum chamber instead of passenger compartment Door-belt rubber seals on the outside turn away water to keep moisture from inside the door and body panels. When window is up, the metal frame strip on window glass lower edge presses against T-shape rubber seal. Polypropylene pile weatherseal on inside is more wear-resistant and moisture-resistant than fabric. Advaniages of polyplopylene pile are: Less friction . . . windows work easier... greater durability... does not absorb moisture. o Wiper pattern cleaning more area at left side of windshield o New 16'wiper blades for optional lnterval Selector Wipers o New wiper motor with 1Oft higher torque output Flocked rubber runs-All The standard wipers are constant-speed, electric-powered. The electric wiper motor does not slow down on hills or during acceleration. The windshield wiper frames for the standard 15" blades are a "Y" shape that reflect less light toward the driver. All wiper blade arms for 1966 Comets are dull-finish chrome for reduced brightness. lnterval Selector Windshield Wipers, optional, are l an exclusive for Comet in its class. The coaxial switch, utilizing electro-pneumatic control, has a dwell adjustment at the center for timing intermittent wiper operation and 3-position outer control as the selection switch. Positions are "ofl", "constant" and "intermittent", the latter providing the selective period of dwell between wipers. In heauy rains, lhe wiper will maintain constant highspeed action of 140 wipes per minute. For all but heauy rains, the wiper can be adjusted so as provide a "pause", or "dwell", between each wiping to cycle, Pause is adjustable by driver at from two to more than 10 seconds. For passing, temporary continuous high-speed operation is automatically provided during acceleration. 1966 Comet windows, including the station wagon back window have low-friction, double-lip glass runs. The double-lip seals press against both sides of the glass for effective air and water sealing. The low-friction dacron flocking reduces effort necessary to raise or lower window. Stud-Anchored Molding Clips Comet windshields and back window moldings are installed with stud-mounted molding clips- The siuds, approximatelY %" hieh wilh %" diameter heads, are welded to the sheetmetal surrounding the windshield and rear window 7" spacing. at Spring-steel clips, which retain the bright exterior moldings, are snapped in place on the stud. These clips provide more positive retention of moldings while reducing potential for leaks. This improved windshield retention is an exclusive Ford Motor Company development. The windshield washer, for 1966 Comet, is a new pulsating type which is activated by the windshield wiper motor. The solenoid-driven piston-type pump sprays washer fluid intermittently when the spring-loaded washer switch is pulled to the "on" position. Non-clogging windshield washer nozzles have rubber tips which stretch, opening up the spray hole to permit obstructions to escape. Frames are provided for side windows for all hardtops and convertibles. These neat, trim bright-finish frames contribute to strength, durability and finished appearance of the side windows' Many competitive cars do not have the brigh!finish stainless-steel frames. Unfinished appearance of unframed competitive windows is conspicuous any time alt windows are not all the way up. lmproved lgnition Switch Three improvements are made in the 1966 Comet,s ignition switch which contribute to luxury-car feel and convenience. (1) Easy-to-use reversible key. (2) Screw-on bezel that provides positive attachment of the ignition switch assembly for better appearance and smoother, more uniform key operation. The threaded bezel is tightened down on the switch assembly with a special tool. (3) lntegral lock cylinder spring reduces variations in clearances and eliminates looseness in operation of switch. Wide-Beam Vertical Headlamps The sealed beam units arethe5%" diameter size. The upper lamps, with 50-watt element at center of each bulb, provide low-beam illumination. All four lamps serve for high-beam lighting with dual lighting power that is greater than with single headlamps. High-reliability small bulbs for taillights, stoplights and turn signals are longer-lasting type with heavy-duty filament and filament mounting. Gomet interior lighting is engineered for safety and convenience. lnstrument panel light intensity can be adjusted by rotating headlamp switch. Dome lamp with i5-candlepower bulb is operated by rotating headlamp switch, or by front door-operated courtesy light switches. Courtesy Light Group-lncludes glove-box light, ashtray light, luggage compartment (or station wagon cargo) light, 2 instrument panel-mounted courtesy lights (standard on convertible), rear door pillar switches for 4-door models and parking brake warning light. (0ptional) Emergency flasher unit, operating front and rear turn signals, is operated by switch in glove compartment. This is a premium-quality, 4-position switch with accessories, off, on and starter positions. o Circuit breaker for auxiliary lights-The protection for auxiliary light circuits is provided by the circuit breaker for the taillights, parking lights and stop signals. Circuit-breaker protection for auxiliary lights is a safety feature, With this arrangement, the tail lamps, stoplights and parking lamps would be interrupted intermittently by a short. The thermally actuated cycling circuit breakers automatically reset to restore the circuit. With a fused circuit, the lights would be out until the fuse is replaced. Circuit breaker in the headiamp wiring system protects the main light circuit. The independent headlamp circuit would not be affected by shorts or flaws in other wiring circuits. lndependent fuse block is located below instrument panel Headlamp switch-The 8-terminal headlamp switch incorporates circuits for headlamps, parking lights, dome lamp and a rheostat swltch for instrument panel lights. Mechanical Stoplight Switch, mounted on the brake pedal arm, is actuated directly by movement of the brake master-cylinder push rod. The switch turns the stoplights on as soon as the pedal is depressed. Advantages of the mechanical switch are: (1) Nonadjustable design, cannot go out of adjustment. (2) ls independent of the brake hydraulic fluid system. (3) Switch and all connecting wiring are in passen ger compartment. Goaxial taillight socket-Comet taillights are connected with a coaxial socket which eliminates the usual loose single wires in the luggage compartment. The coaxial socket has one terminal on a post and the other on a surrounding collar. This design makes a neater installation. Multiple wire connectors including as many as eight circuits are used in Comet's electrical system. Each of the gang Fuse Link in Convertible Top Circuit The safety fuse link, a 6" long rubber-coated copper wire with zinc-coated brass terminals, is installed between the battery side of the starter relay and the terminal block. The location in the engine compartment makes the fuse link easily accessible for inspection and service. Since the fuse link is, by design, the weakest wire in the circuit, a short in the convertible top circuit would burn out the fuse link before causing damage to other wires. When this occurs, the link has to be replaced. Mercury Comet dealers can obtain fuse links for replacement purposes. Shunt-type ammeter-The 2-pole ammeter for the 1966 Comet is designed to permlt elimination of the return wire to the battery. The ammeter is connected by a shunt and two small wires from the alternator circuit. connectors is matched only with its own mate. The multipleterminal disconnects for the steering column circuits are a miniature design, made of nylon and incorporating a locking Low-current horns-The 4" low-current horns are actuated directly by the steering column switch and do not require a relay. Coach joints are formed when two flanged surfaces are welded. . o lncreased use of galvanized steel for underbody structure. Use of rustless steel body side moldings with greater resistance to surface corrosion. (Aluminum side moldings are also used in some applications.) . Use of plastic molding retainers for all body side moldings. The galvanized steel used for vital underbody members of the 1966 Comet bodies resists corrosion twice as long as conventional steel. The 1966 Comet bodies include more galvanized steel than previous models. Galvanized is used for rocker panels and side sills, rear underbody rails, and the upper front-end rails; also for parts of torque boxes, reinforcements, gussets and crossmembers. Special Anti-Corrosion Treatment for Body Zinc-rich paint primer is applied liberally on interlor surfaces of the Comet body following phosphating and before the first paint primer coat is applied. The zinc-rich primer is approxi' malelyg0/6 concentrated zinc solution. Areas covered include: o . joints on the Comet body are on the upper back panel junction of rocker panel and rear quarter. at and Coach Comet license plates can have improved appearance with the cadmium-plated bolts an d nylon retainers which are provided for attachment. The plastic retainers will not rust. Either plastic or rubber insulators are pro- vided to separate license plate from bumper. Plates can be changed quickly and easily with a screwdriver as the only tool. Front fender area above headlamps. The 1966 Comets have 1-way valves installed in the rear quarter panel extension, about 3" behind the rear wheel cutout. These valves consist of a rubbercovered steel frame with two rubber retaining plugs and a rubber strap covering the hole in the body sheetmetal. The valves are approximately 2%" long and 1/s" wide. One is installed on each side of the car. The stainless-steel screws used to retain the wheelhouse moldings on 1966 Comets and in other exposed areas on Comet bodies are premium-quality non-magnetic SAE 30305 steel. The screws are low-silhouette cross-recessed type. Nylon Side Molding Retainers All 1966 Comet body side moldings are installed with plastic retainers with insulator tabs which keep the moldings away " from the enameled body sheetmetal. The retainers are made of nylon, reinforced with glass fiber and coated with an epoxy resin. Two types are used. One is made with a drive pin which flares out to lock on inside of the body panel when pin is struck on the other end. The other retainer is turned to lock. Advantages of retainers are: (1) Eliminate contact between molding and body to allow water to flow under molding. This prevents entrapment ll ti of salt and other contaminants which could cause corrosion. (2) Reduces damage to enamel by molding edges. Since the moldings rest on the insulator tabs, the enamel is less likely to be damaged by penetrations. (3) Reduces galvanic corrosi0n due to electrical (battery) action between different metals. The nylon insulators serve to interrupt the circuit. (4) The plastic retainers can't rust or damage the body sheetmetal through abrasion or scratches. Vinyl-Covered 0xford Roofs are available for the 1966 Mercury Comet 3-Coat Acrylic Super Enamel Comet's 3-coat, baked acrylic enamel finish is the industry's finest. The acrylic enamel is baked on to form a protective cover over the body sheetmetal, while providing the deepluster beauty of baked-enamel finish. Before the triple coats of enamel are applied, the body receives allover rust protection and two coats of tough, tenacious epoxy primer. Each primer application is followed by wet-sanding of the exterior surface. Acrylic baking enamel is a product of modern chemical research. During the oven baking, the paint molecules are rearranged for tighter interlock. (Competitive air-dried lacquers do not get the molecular lockup which occurs in Paint Preparation- 1966 Mercury Comet The phosphating treatment is applied to the entire body to provide proper paint adhesion. Steps in phosphating are: (1) Thorough cleaning of body sheetmetal by hot alkali solution to remove all dirt and grease. (2) Two separate high-pressure, clear-water rinses. (3) There is no difference in the ingredients of the red and gray primer other than the color. Red shows plainly when the sheetmetal is properly covered. Gray shows that a full second coat has been applied and prevents removal of too much material duri4g the sanding operation. Advantages of Acrylic Enamel Ford Motor Company paint specialists list the following advantages of the new acrylic-based enamels over the alkyd-based enamels used previously. (l) Acrylic enamel finish is 50/e harder than alkyd-based enamel. Greater toughness means greater mar-resistance and increased impact-resistance to prevent chipping. (2) Acrylic enamel produces better appearing metallic finishes. ln the metallic acrylic enamels there is practically no mottling caused by agglomeration of aluminum particles in any colors. The result is a more homogeneous finish and better color matching of separately processed fenders and bodies. (3) Acrylic enamel's hardness permits mechanical polishability without subsequent dulling. The quality of the finish can be improved by polishing either by hand rubbing or with a wheel. (4) Acrylic enamel metallics offer advantages in improved gloss retention during sunlight exposure (over the alkydbased enamels and GM's acrylic lacquer)' Second rinse eliminates any carryover. (4) Allover rustproofing. Corrosion inhibitor with zincphosphate base is sprayed over all body surfaces with high-pressure jets and then baked. Special attention is paid to spraying inside doors, body posts, and other Comet's baking process.) Epoxy Primer System-Steps in the epoxy primer system: (1) Red epoxy primer is applied to body inside and out. (2) Gray epoxy primer is applied to outside surfaces, baked and then welsanded. 1966 Mercury Comet 202 2-door sedan, Capri and Caliente 4-door sedans, and the Capri, Caliente and Cyclone 2'door hardtops as optional extra-cost equipment. These are available in two colors-black and white-with all body colors. closed sections. All seams and solder areas are sealed with hlghly adhesive epoxy-type glaze. (5) Clear-water rinse. (6) Washing with chromic and phosphoric acid solution that neutralizes surface. (7) Hot-air baking for thorough drying before first primer coat is applied. Thorough inspection before painting. 1966 Mercury Comet Bumpers The bumper system, for 1966 Comets, is designed to maintain for the heavier vehicles the same impact-absorption level as previous Comets. o Both front and rear bumpers are l-piece full-width o design, made of the SAE 950 modified high-strength alloy steel with .106" thickness. All Comet bumpers are chrome-plated with the white-brass pr0cess. o All Comet front bumpers are face-mounted. A sheetmetal stamping approximately 4" wide shaped as a "U", and with flanged ends, is bolted to end of underbody cross' member for the left and right side mounting. o Rear bumpers are face-mounted for passenger cars and arm-mounted for station wagons. Larger, finer door handles-The new exterior door handles are a long trim design with a large handgrip area and a long rectangular release button. Fine-car quality is evident in construction, appearance and function. Overall length of the handles at the base is 8"-17/.a" larger than on previous models. Feel of the door handle is improved by the solid grip bar which replaces the U-shape hollow bar used previously. The handles are richly chrome-plated for durability and sparkling appearance. ,-a--'' Construction Features Mercury Comet Deluxe Air Conditioner A completely new combination reheat air conditioner and air-blending heater, custom-designed for the new bodies, is available as optional equipment for 1966 Comet vehicles. Cars ordered with this unit in place of the standard heaterdefroster have the combination system built into the car at the factory. The evaporator (cooling) core and the heater core are contained in a common housing which is mounted against the dash beneath the instrument panel. Four registers are provided in the instrument panel for discharging cold air. Performance is outstanding for cooling, heating or defrosting. C00LlNG-Delivers approximately 200 cubic feet of dry-cold air per minute... as cold as anyone would want it. HEATING-Delivers approximately 165 cubic feet of heated air per minute. DEICING-Delivers approximately 140 cubic feet of hot air per minute to the windshield, about 40/s more than previous Comet defrosters. a The excellent performance is a result of an all-new design utilizing air mixing valves to obtain cooled air or heated air at the desired temperature, and the reheat function to obtain drier air that isn't too cool for comfort. The air ls cooled in the evaporator to about 34"-just above freezing. This dehumidifies the air, removing as much moisture as possible. The cold air is then mixed with heated air to raise it to desired temperature. Because the evaporator coils are wet, air is cleaned of dust, pollen and other foreign matter as it passes over the coils. The system operates on either recirculated or outside air. Recirculated air can be useC for quick cool-down. A thermometer held in front of a register could go from 140'F. to 65"F. in 10 minutes. (The 140" represents a heat-soaked car under hot sun.) 0wners would use recirculated air only for quick cool-down or possibly for a hot day in the desert. Dehumidification keeps relative humidity of discharged air below the 35/srange. . . far down in the comfort level. Air distribution can be controlled to direct cool curtains of air over the side windows, or to direct cool air to the roof to provide cooler air at passengers'breathing level. The combination heater and air conditioner unit for the 1966 Comet vehicles is installed under the instrument panel in place of the standard heater. Both the evaporator core and the heater core are installed in the common housing. Gompressor drive is a magnetic clutch which is engaged and disengaged by a temperature-controlled switch in evaporator. Compressor operates only when needed for cooling. The condenser is installed in front of the car radiator. Controls are conveniently located in the instrument cluster at left of the steering column. The air handling system includes a plenum chamber, ducts to the four instrument panel registers, a single-piece defroster nozzle and provisions for hot-air discharge to the front and rear compartment floors. Three vacuum-powered servos are used. These are: the door selecting outside or recirculated air for the air conditioner, the heater or air conditioner air-distribution system selection door, and the defroster 0FF-0N door. The mixing door in the air handling system, operated by a cable from the temperature lever, affords modulation at any point between all cold and all hot air. Functions of Heater-Air Conditioner Maximum cooling-Recirculated air is taken from passenger compartment through the right duct (right air vent on nonair-conditioned models). lt passes through the blower and then through the evaporator coil where it is cooled, cleaned and dehumidified. The cold air bypasses the heater section and goes directly to four instrument panel registers. Cooling with outside air-0peration same as with recirculated air, except air is taken into blower from cowl intake. Modulated cooling-0utside air passes through the blower and then through the evaporator for cooling, cleaning and dehumidifying. Part of the cold air then passes through the heater core for reheating. The cold and heated air are then mixed to bring the discharged air up to a comfortable level. Heating-Refrigeration is shut off when the system is set for heating or defrosting. The heater delivers approximately 165 cubic feet of 150'air per minute. The flow of hot water to heater core is controlled by a vacuumpowered 0FF-0N valve in the incoming hose. When tempera- ture lever is at minimum, the flow of water through heater core is shut off. Air bypasses the heater. No heat is picked up. Customer Benefits-Comet's New lntegral Deluxe Air Conditioner Comet's new integral air conditioner affords many customer benefits and product advantages. No cars in the industry will have better cooling. Drier air adds to utility-The Comet air conditioner can contribute to improved comfort in a wide variety of weather, Gomet's combination heater'air conditioner saves space and reduces weight because the heater and air conditioner In moderately cool weather (40'F. to 60"F.)-The air use common housing, controls and other parts. conditioner can be used to get dry warm air. Any change in the temperature lever, toward high or low, affects the bodies. ln this heater, temperature of discharge air is controlled by mixing outside unheated air with heated air. This provides temperature of the delivered air immediately. quick response to the temperature lever setting. panel, the housing normally isn't seen. No parts of heater in sight line-Mounted against dash The heater-delroster, a major improvement over any previous Comet heaters, offers many significant customer benefits' lt makes Comets as warm and comfortable in cold weather as any cars on the road with standard heater-defroster systems' Several factors contribute to this: High-capacity defroster-The higher capacity and con' trolled air distribution afford an important gain in defroster High heater capacity-Delivers 165 cubic feet of heater air at 150' per rninute at 150'temPerature. maximum heating. Three vanes in the defroster nozzles direct the flow across the windshield. A screen is provided in the nozzles to prevent objects getting into the system. Mercury Comet Body Weathersealing The weathersealing for 1966 Comet bodies incorporates new materials and methods. The new body is designed for better, more effective air and water sealing. Door weatherstrips are neater and less conspicuous than on previous models. :N -""sW Highlights: o Sealing lines are smooth . . . free of abrupt changes. c 100% mechanical retention of seals in channels or with plastic drive pins. . New materials with better sealing characteristics, increased lubricity and better color stability. o . Shingling (overlap) action at belt at junction of the roof rail and door seals. Reduced scuffing and abrasion of weatherseal as a result of new design of body parts and hinges. Swing of doors is designed to minimize abrasion of door weatherstrips. Comet vent window seals are delivered at the assembly plants as finished pieces, precision-made to seal the particular opening. These are made of a new synthetic rubber which is nonstaining and maintains its black color. Previously it was necessary to add ozone protection to the rubber compound. This would stain paint and in time cause discoloration of rubber with a yellow tinge produced by blooming action. Sealing of the convertible top to reduce air and water leaks and to reduce wind noise makes a major contribution to the improved comfort Ievel of 1966 Comet convertibles. The weatherseal between the windshield header and No. I roof bow is made of five pieces, vulcanized together into a Butyl-Tape Windshield Seals All 1966 Comet windshield and 2-door hardtop rear windows are installed with the new butyl-tape bedding compound method which can virtually eliminate water leaks. Besides providing better sealing, the butyl compound permits installing the bright-finish exterior moldings directly against the glass for improved appearance. The usual black rubber band around the glass is eliminated. installation:(l) lnstall windshield molding retainers in opening. lnstall the continuous sponge spacers. (2) lnstall the extruded butyl tape on body all around windshield opening. (3) Glass is installed on extruded tape. Because Steps in windshield the extruded tape is uniform size throughout its length, the right amount is provided. No trimming is necessary. (4) An air-bag-powered fixture applied to glass exerts about 1500 psi. This beds the glass into the butyl to provide sealing, precise positioning and proper retention. The butyl materiai adheres to both glass and metal. single U-shape assembly. A new feature is the adjustable weatherseal strip for the rear half of the door window. This seal is retained in the side rail channel by studs installed in elongated holes. The strip can be adjusted to close gaps at either end to eliminate air and water leaks-a Ford Motor Company innovation. Plastic drive pins retain door weatherstrips below the belts. The pins are integral with the molded closed-cell sponge rubber. The weatherstrip assembly is made to fit the door opening. The pins are driven into prepared holes in the inner door panel. Another improvement in convertible top sealing is the unique design for the rear quarter window seal at junction of the roof rail at the belt. A rubber baffle is here added to reduce water and air lea kage. The axles are the semifloating hypoid-gear design with the pinion offset ly2" lo lower the drive-line and floor tunnel. All axles are straddle-mounted with two tapered-roller bearings ahead of pinion and one straight roller bearing behind. Gear ratios range from the high-economy 2.80:1 to the 3.50:1. Ring-gear diameters are increased combinations for 1966. for several power train Comet's conuentional rear A single filler plug is provided for checking fluid level and adding lubricant as needed. (No drain plug is provided.) axles are built in three sizes and a selection of standard As the axle is filled with life-of-car fluid at the factory, draining isn't necessary. and optional ratios. All pinion gears are straddle-mounted. Straddle mounting provides a double row of tapered-roller bearings ahead of the pinion and a single row of straight roller bearings behind. Straddle mounting maintains more accurate ring-gear tooth alignment for smoother, quieter operation and longer service. Rear Axle Specifications Type.... Differential... .... . Wheel bearings.... Cold-extruded steel is stronger because the surface is worked in compression. The shafts are made by forcing the steel, cold, through extrusi0n dies-always under compression. The torsional strength of the axle shafts is measured by the yield point. Typical Comet axle shafts have yield point of 33,000 pounds, compared with 24,000 pounds for hot-forged shafts Rear axle vent to dormant area-The tube extending from the rear axle to the enclosed underbody rail provides venting of axle t0 a dormant enclosed area. Venting to a dormant area prevents road contaminants from reaching the rear axle gears and lubricants. Power Transfer Axle* is simply a conventional axle plus of the same size. Comet axle shafts have integral flanged outboard ends and pressure-rolled splines on inner ends. These axle shafts are made better . . . are stronger . . . than shafts in some of the highest priced cars. All Ring-gear and pinion sets-The ring gear and pinion for each Comet rear axle are manufactured as a matched set. They are run in as a set during the lapping operation. The final tests for smooth, quiet operation are made as a set. the clutch pack. The conventional differential case and case cover are machined to provide notches for the dog'eared steel clutch plates, while a differential lubricator is added as well as a pair of lubricant scoops for additional cooling of the clutch pack. The facing material for the bonded plates is similar to that used for automatic transmission clutch packs. Advantages of the optional extra-cost Power Transfer rear axle are shown in the comparison table. *Optional at extra cost. Controlled-Slip (Locking) Rear Axle Conventional Non-Locking Axle Permits differential action at all times. Resists differential action at all times. The rear axle shafts are locked in the differential so the wheels work in unison until the car changes direction. ln turns, the clutch in the rear axle breaks loose to permit controlled (limited) slipping until the car returns to a straight course. Divides engine torque equallY shafts. lf one wheel loses traction due to lifting or slippery surfaces, it is prevented lrom rotating faster than the other wheel and thereby provides traction on the biting wheel to the extent of the clutch capacity of 350 foot-pounds. Wheel with least traction will Wheel between left and right axle spin under poor traction conditions. with least traction turns at same speed as wheel with bite.
