Since the gallery opened in 1982, thousands of people have added comments next to their names and contact details. Consider for a moment how many hours of art appreciation these pages confirm and also the hundreds of artists who have exhibited here. The tome of names also documents the participation of local sculptors in some of the earliest events organized at Gomboc Gallery. These include now highly recognized WA artists such as Margaret Priest, Lou Lambert, Hans Arkeveld, Maris Raudzins, Campbell Cornish, Frank Wilkinson, and many others. Alongside these now senior artists are the names of the “young guns” of the time, including John Tarry, Peter Dailey, and Stuart Elliott. Over thirty-two years, this annual sculpture exhibition has had a number of changes. Ron Gomboc’s extensive travelling to participate by invitation in sculpture symposia around the world, starting in Singapore in 1986, created important connections with international sculptors who expressed interest in exhibiting in the Sculpture Survey. These exhibitions in turn led to numerous residencies at Gomboc Gallery, including artists from Salzburg, Vermont, Seoul, Beijing, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Shanghai. An ongoing cultural exchange with artists from Japan is particularly strong. Local art collectors appreciate Japanese artists’ eloquent manipulation of metal and stone. In the 2015 Survey we see innovatively cut, twisted, stacked and bound metal by Tetsuro Yamasaki that result in spatially dynamic abstract compositions. The chisel-textured organic stone mounds of Akiho Tata sport dazzling geometric patterns in primary colours that we can’t help but touch. Takahiro Hirata’s sharplyhoned stone edges pull the eye up. Kamada Shohei suspends objects in clear resin. From South Australia, and exhibiting for the first time at Gomboc, are Nicholas Uhlmann, Lee Salomone and George Andric. Andric’s parallactic overlapping lines take Op Art to the third dimension. South Korean, but living in Perth, Jina Lee’s bulbous and flowing carvings invoke us to caress cold stone curves. Many of these artists are now also familiar names with Sculpture by the Sea. In 2005, an additional boost was given to sculpture in Western Australia by the inaugural, now annual, Sculpture by the Sea exhibition at Cottesloe. The 2015 exhibition on the beach attracted over 200 project proposals from local, national and international artists. Gomboc Gallery includes the display of sculpture from the Cottesloe exhibitions to further promote sculpture by national and international artists. One of the most important additional components since 1995 has been the involvement of hundreds of students from ECU, Curtin, UWA, Midland TAFE (Polytechnic West), Central TAFE, and Claremont School of Art. Some of these institutions have closed in recent times, and others no longer offer sculpture. However, Curtin and ECU in particular have demonstrated strong ongoing support. To the list of renowned WA artists above we can add ECU graduates who have exhibited internationally including Denise Pepper, Norton Flavel, London-based David Turley, Glasgow-based Darius Kowal, and more recent graduates such as Sebastian Befumo. This year ECU is proud to present the work of 22 students ranging from first to third year. For many local students, the Sculpture Survey is the first exhibition in which they have participated, and the first entry on their artist CV. Based on the experiences gained here, several graduates have gone on to exhibit at Sculpture by the Sea, other biennial events, and to teach sculpture in secondary schools. Please congratulate Ron and Terrie Gomboc for their long-term vision and passion to facilitating and furthering traditional and contemporary sculpture in Australia, Asia, and beyond. Dr Nien Schwarz is an artist and Senior Lecturer in visual arts and art history at the School of Communications and Arts, Edith Cowan University. 2 Tonoiso Hidetsugu Kazenofukutokoro (stainless steel) Naminokatati (stainless steel) Home (ceramic) 4Kyaku (ceramic) Tonoiso Hidetsugu 1963: 1988: 1987: 1994: 1996: 1997: 2000: 2006: Born in Fukuoka. His practise is based on a constantly evolving principle and method of construction which deals with the way complex forms arise from simple elements. The sculptures that he creates are made up of an arrangement of basic units, allowing him to examine the dynamic relationship between the simple and the complex, between the material and the void, between the viewer and the object, and particularly between structure and form. As an artist, George strives to find some sense of order that is independent of the world that presents itself to him – which at times can be deceptive and illusory EDUCATION 1991 Bachelor of Visual Arts University of South Australia SA School of Art SELECTED ARTWORKS ‘Sisyphus’ | Nov 2014 Sculpture(Stainless Steel) Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi Sydney, New South Wales(Collection of D Duncan NZ) ‘Sisyphus’ | Mar 2014 Sculpture (Stainless Steel) 6th Palmer Sculpture Biennial Palmer, South Australia ‘Time and Space’ | 2012 Sculpture (Stainless Steel) Public Art Commission City of Prospect, South Australia ‘everything changes everything returns’ | Mar 2012Sculpture (Mild Steel – Full scale maquette) 5th Palmer Sculpture Biennial Palmer, South Australia ‘everything changes everything returns’ | Mar 2011 Sculpture (Stainless Steel) Sculpture by the Sea, Cottesloe.
