Medical Assistant’s Week
To celebrate National Medical
Assistant‟s Week, and to help
prepare our students for their
certification exam, the Spartanburg
Chapter hosted a Bowl of
Knowledge during the monthly
meeting in October.
Students from Spartanburg
Community College and students
from Virginia College were invited
to participate in the bowl of
knowlege.
Patty Licurs, CMA (AAMA), hosted
the Bowl of Knowledge, Peggy
Edwards (AAMA) and Pam
Vaughn, CMA(AAMA) served as
judges while Connie Hembree,
CMA (AAMA) and Doris Becknell,
CMA(AAMA) were the time
keepers.

Monthly Meeting Highlights…
Meeting called to order by our newly elected president, Connie Hembree, CMA(AAMA). Speaker was
Kevin Konz, from Proaxis Therapy, topic was, Ergonomics in the Work Place. During the business
session, it was decided that the Special Projects Committee would handle refreshments for the monthly
meeting with reimbursement made to them by the chapter. This duty was added in the Policy handbook
and the Bylaws.
Vice President, Shivali Shah, CMA (AAMA) gave an over view of ICD10. Attendees were given a cross
word puzzle and a copy of the ICD10 draft to solve the puzzle . The 2014 Conference Committee had
been working hard, and gave updates on their progress including the location, registration fees and
possible speakers.
Donna Wade, Nurse Practitioner presented a program on Diagnosis and Management of Gastro
esophageal Reflux Disease in Pediatric Patients. The 2014 Conference Committee distributed
application forms and encouraged everyone to help get ads and vendors.
Speaker of the evening was President, Connie Hembree, CMA(AAMA) who reviewed and presented
updates on HIPAA. During the business session, the chapter voted to add a new standing committee;
“Policy Handbook Committee”.
Lisa Rutchik from the Children‟s Hospital at the Greenville Hospital System gave an informative
program on the Role of Pediatric Occupational Therapy. During the business session, Peggy Edwards,
CMA(AAMA) presented the chapter with her final draft of the updated chapter history.
The annual Bowl of Knowledge was a success!!!
Our speaker for November was Mary Barnes, RD,CDE and the topic was Diabetes Education.

Everyone enjoyed the „Left, Right” story by Sandra Williams, CMA (AAMA) during our ornament
exchange! (Empty trays proved that the food was delicious!!)
Spartanburg Chapter‟s most dedicated member!!
He has been a faithful attendee for many years. Always
the first there and the last one to leave. Quietly
participates in all events with a smile.

Manual”. This was
needed for some time and
will be most helpful for our
newer members. The
Manual lists the duties of
officers as well as the
duties of our Committee
Chairs.

A Message from our President:
Connie Hembree, CMA(AAMA)
First and foremost I would like to commend each and every
member of the Spartanburg Chapter of Certified Medical
Assistants. This past year has been an exciting and challenging
adventure. The support and kindness I have received during my
tenure is a testimony of true professionalism from each member. I
am honored to have had the opportunity to serve and hope that I
have performed m duties in a way that would hold true to the
values of Medical Assisting. The Spartanburg Chapter of Medical
Assistants has a bright future ahead and I am certain that it will
continue to be a source of inspiration to new members of the
profession.
We are looking forward to the upcoming SCSMA Conference in
March that will beheld at Summit Pointe in Spartanburg. I know
that it will be a great success and much lots of fun! I hope to see
everyone there.
Always remember that Medical Assisting is an exciting and
rewarding profession. Reaching the Summit of medical assisting is
great but the climb is half the fun!
