Welcome to the 53rd Come-See-Me Festival; Rock Hill’s historical kick-off to a beautiful spring. My wish is that these 10 days
fill residents and visitors alike with warm memories of family entertainment, music, food, and fun!

History
Rock Hill’s annual salute to spring brings more than 70 events and activities to attendees. Loaded with frogs, music, and fun the
Come-See-Me Festival brings together friends, neighbors, and festival-lovers from all over the US and the world.
Official sponsors of the 2016 Come-See-Me Festival are Carolinas HealthCare System, The City of Rock Hill, Comporium, Rock Hill
Coca-Cola Bottling Company, and Williams & Fudge, Inc. Their support allows the Festival to provide events at minimal or no
charge. Come-See-Me is considered the largest, all-volunteer festival in South Carolina and attracted nearly 120,000 participants
in 2015. Guests came from 23 states, Canada, Germany and France.
An award-winning Festival, Come-See-Me recently was named the 2015 South Carolina Event of the Year and ranks as one of the
South’s Top 20 Spring Festivals for more than a decade. Debuting spring of 1962 as a community project to encourage tourists,
relatives and friends to visit Rock Hill during its most beautiful season, the Festival began as a weekend event. Over the years it
grew in popularity and expanded to 10 days. Created by C.H. “Icky” Albright, former Rock Hill Mayor and State Senator, ComeSee-Me also was nurtured by Rock Hill resident, the late Vernon Grant, nationally acclaimed illustrator and creator of Kellogg’s®
celebrated gnomes, “Snap, Crackle and Pop®.” Grant created the Festival’s mascot, “Glen the Frog”®, of which Grant designed
more than 30 different styles. Each year the festival chair selects a new logo and updates its design and colors.

Community Service Merit Awards
Awarded to dedicated volunteers who improve our community through their selfless service and commitment to others,
the Come-See-Me Community Service Merit Awards are determined by a panel of judges. Community members submit
nominations each fall. Visit ComeSeeMe.org to nominate a future selection. This year’s winners are:
Lawrence Brown – Better known as Coach Brown because of the multitude of kids he has mentored, Lawrence
personifies the heart of a volunteer. A coach in the sense that he guides his players to know and excel in their sport, he also
leads them to become quality people. This is apparent in the time and dedication he shares with his teams, their parents, and
all others affiliated with youth sports. Whether he is coaching for the Upper Palmetto YMCA or a recreation league, he gives
his all. During football season, he typically gathers his players to see a high school game; providing transportation and more
importantly, someone for the kids to look up to and learn from.
Coach Brown’s impact is obvious in the skills and advancement visible in his players as well as in their long-term admiration.
Doug Cole – A former Rock Hill Police Officer, Doug’s dedication and energy stay focused on improving the world for
children. A tireless supporter of the Worthy Boys & Girls Camp, the Children’s Attention Home, and Palmetto School, Doug
has developed creative ways to raise money and recruit volunteers for these organizations. From Mardi Gras Galas to golf
tournaments, he consistently offers leadership and guidance to better serve the kids benefitting from these events. Doug
also served as a Come-See-Me Festival team leader. He is currently a volunteer for the Culture & Heritage Museums and Grace
Lutheran Church.
Harry Dalton – A passionate environmentalist, for decades Harry has dedicated time, energy, and expertise to bettering
York County and beyond. His involvement with the Sierra Club helped save both Nanny’s Mountain near Clover and Worth
Mountain on the Broad River near Hickory Grove. He raises awareness of environmental issues through his involvement with
the Nation Ford Land Trust, the York County Community Foundation, the Palmetto Conservation Foundation, and Governor
Riley’s Environmental Council.
Though his consistent leadership and vision, Harry has been instrumental in changing the face of downtown Rock Hill via
renovation and restoration of buildings to his support of the arts. He is currently a catalyst for the Dalton Downtown Arts
initiative to encourage collaboration among area galleries.
Cindy Downing – Powered by a servant’s heart, Cindy gives countless hours helping those who can’t help themselves.
Whether by organizing blood drives, motorcycle benefit rides, or relay teams to support CureFest for Childhood Cancer, she
actively contributes to changing circumstances. As a Comporium Pioneer, Cindy coordinated sending care packages to a
coworker and his unit in Afghanistan, and acts as a Guardian Ad Litem for children in the York County court system.
Holding seats on the Salvation Army Advisory Board and Foundation for Abused and Neglected Children/Youth (FANCY),
Cindy’s kindness and passion for giving are her personal trademarks.
Sylvia Echols – A tireless ambassador for what’s best for children, Sylvia has advocated for them in all areas; collaborating
with businesses, nonprofits, schools, and the community at large. Her efforts are apparent in the success of programs she has
developed including The Number 1 Question, “is it good for the children?” and Success by 6, which has expanded into the Early
Learning Partnership. These initiatives contributed to York County placing first in the State for child well-being.
Claire Robinson – An enthusiastic volunteer, Claire serves in numerous clubs and activities at Northwestern High school
as well as donating time and energy to the Come-See-Me Festival and ChristmasVille. Possessing a gift for compassion, Claire
has consistently reached out to those less fortunate; including gathering stuffed animals for children impacted by Hurricane
Katrina, assembling and distributing care bags for homeless people, and obtaining formal wear for girls to wear to prom.

4th Annual Doggy Couture Pet Fashion Show

Let your pet strut his/her stuff on the “cat” walk in
the 4th Annual Doggy Couture Pet Fashion Show
& Pet Expo. Judged in three categories-swimwear,
formalwear/evening attire, and crazy outfits/costumes
pets win prizes and raise money for local pet rescue.

lovingly grown by area Master Gardeners. Selections

sample in a plastic bag and a Master Gardener will

Promise of York County’s 5th Annual Bed Race.
Proceeds benefit Family Promise of York County, a
homeless shelter program serving families. Fivemember teams create themed beds on wheels and
race with one rider and four runners pushing the
bed. Teams race two at a time. Prior to racing, riders
must put on their “pajamas” before getting onto the
bed and heading off. Place a one dollar vote for your

Vernon Grant’s Leap Into Spring – An Art
Exhibition

with springtime-themed art created from the 1930s
through the 1970s by Vernon Grant. Rendered
for magazine covers, storybooks, and product
advertisements, these delightful illustrations
showcase his keen wit, mastery of color, and fanciful
flair for design. Grant’s role in co-founding Rock Hill’s
annual Come-See-Me spring festival and creating
its mascot, Glen the Frog, will be highlighted with
promotional artwork created by Grant from 1962
through 1986. Price included with Museum admission.
