This fabulous route along the Roman walls is truly unique in the Benelux. 4 At the end of the Leopoldwal carry straight on until you come to the start of the Maastrichterstraat. This takes you to the Veemarkt with its renovated fountain and benches. In addition to the many stands that you can visit this is also an excellent spot to stop for a drink and something to eat. This is why we advise you to write down a list of the top five items you would like to buy. You may need to look around, but you can also ask antiques dealers who will be able to put you in the right direction. You will find regulars at the antiques market of course such as the antiques dealers in the picturesque shops around the antiques market, but there are also a lot of individual dealers. If you don’t find what you are looking for on one Sunday, you will find a lot of new dealers the next week with their latest offerings. Real antiques lovers are also regulars to the antiques market. 5 come rain or shine... We all love sunny weather of course, but the an antiques market also has lots to offer in rainy weather or in the winter. If we are having a bout of typical Belgian weather, you will find the antiques dealers in the Eburonen Hall or in the Julianus car park. Tongeren has something for everyone, no matter what the weather. A warm pick-me up on a cold winter’s day tastes just as good as cool pint of Amburon in the summer! 120125_antiekmagazine(EN).indd 13 31/01/12 14:41 i i oven h s n a M Erwin s n a j r e V a Natasch e eren.b tong @stad n e v sho .man r erwin nage e eren.b tong @stad s n ja er cha.v rkets natas n ma tratio is in adm a ets m mark 7 6 the antiques shops 2000-year guarantee The antiques market also acts as a magnet drawing people to the antiques shops along the whole circuit through Tongeren. This passion for the past is the driving force that sends thousands of visitors to Tongeren every Sunday, and you must admit … what better item to have in your sitting room than a knick-knack with a story to tell. 8 negotiating margin Bargaining is as old as Tongeren itself. You find the price being asked is a bit too high? Then put in an offer that also shows respect for the antiques dealer. A bit of negotiating is part of the whole experience of buying at the biggest antiques market in the Benelux. 120125_antiekmagazine(EN).indd 14 31/01/12 14:41 9 the logistics of the market Are you planning to purchase a large cupboard or antique building materials? Make sure you have the right kind of transport. Most antiques dealers will be happy to help you out with tips and advices. 10 from seller to seller Have you caught the Tongeren antiques market bug? Then empty your cellar or your attic of your grandmother’s old stuff. On Sundays the stars of the market in Tongeren are the antiques dealers and you too can experience what this feels like. For a small rental fee you can have your own stand. It’s a great hobby that can also put a few euros in your purse! 120125_antiekmagazine(EN).indd 15 31/01/12 14:41 sold to t Moscow 120125_antiekmagazine(EN).indd 16 31/01/12 14:42 o the Museum in We met a slightly tired, but enthusiastic Mr and Mrs Buurman at their stand in the indoor halls. “This morning we were already here at 5 a.m. That’s when the professional dealers turn up and when we sell our biggest volumes” declared the Dutch antiques dealers. “We have been here in Tongeren in the same hall for in Tongeren just in time at around 5 o’clock in the more than 18 years, every week at the same spot.
