Issue No. 118: Friday 21st March 2014
HEADTEACHER’S NEWS
Our week began last Saturday with the Choral concert at Brentwood Cathedral. It was a fabulous occasion with a
number of Junior School pupils performing as part of the large choir—it was a wonderful experience for them being
part of such a prestigious event in such beautiful surroundings. I know that those there would agree wholeheartedly
with me.
On to weekly matters…...and the school has again been very busy in all areas. I have continued to see a wide variety
of good work this week which is, as ever, very pleasing. There has been lots of sport going on with House netball
and U12 Boy’s hockey, but the real highlight has been the appearance of our Under 13 Football team in the Independent Schools National Cup Final yesterday. The boys and two coachloads of IVth form supporters travelled to
Burton Albion FC to contest the final against Whitgift School. The boys competed magnificently in challenging circumstances, given that Whitgift have over 200 boys per year group! We came away as runners up, but their heads
were still held very high and deservedly so. To have got to the final in itself was a magnificent achievement and we
are very proud of their season long endeavours (and the coaching staff!). They have been fantastic role models for
the Under 11 boys who also compete in their own National finals early next term—such success!
Today is our “sporty” themed non-uniform day in aid of the cancer charities we are supporting at the moment. A
variety of sporty outfits have adorned the school today and we have raised over £600 to support Mrs Punt’s London
Marathon run in aid of Cancer Research. May I thank you all, as ever, for your exceptional generosity.
Our German Exchange partners arrived last night from Hamburg for their week’s stay. They are staying with our
host families and are visiting several places, including the sights of London and Brighton this week. We hope they
manage to improve their English along the way—I’m sure they will!
Next week sees the annual BBC School
Report day on Thursday as well as the end
of term on Friday. Lots to fit in between
then and now and I wish you an enjoyable
week ahead.

QUESTION
OF THE
How can people

WEEK
Headteacher’s Awards.
Answer to last week’s Headteacher’s Question:
Why do people fear losing things that they do not even have yet?
People fear losing things they do not even have because they want
things so much.
One example is a sports player who was in a final, he wanted to win
so much he would fear losing the game and his victory.
The fear of failure effects his performance so he will lose anyway.
Matthew UIC
People fear losing things they do not even have
because they make plans for the future.
While making these plans they often imagine
things that they would like to have.
They keep wanting these things again and again
and soon it almost becomes a part of their
lives.
That is why they fear losing things.
Adi LIIM
I think people fear losing things they don’t even have yet because it is natural to be scared of losing things.
For example if you really want a new gadget and you haven’t got it yet but you are really excited about getting it.
Doubts come into your mind that you might lose it and won’t be allowed another one.
Or you are doing something that will earn you respect - like doing something well. You are scared to lose the trust
and go down in society.
These are examples of what I think people fear of losing and why. I think it is natural to feel this way.

My Vampire Grandad by Roy Apps
Life for Jonathan Leech is on the verge of taking a toe-curling turn for the worse. Or
is it? He’s about to discover his family’s dark secret, Grandad! But that’s not
all. Jonathan makes some unusual new friends who are going to teach him a few
bloodcurdling things about himself, too….
Meet Jonathan and the grisly neighbours of Goolish in the first of a series about the

JUNIOR SCHOOL ART
After the Easter break the pupils will be starting some new projects in their
Art lessons and we would like them to bring in the following items that they
will need:
LI—Please could your child bring in a shoe box with a separate lid , as we will be making jungle boxes.
UI—Please could your child bring in a shoe box with a separate lid, as we will be making Tudor houses.
LII—Please could your child bring in some samples of cotton fabric as we will be doing a fabric decoupage project
next term, it must be cotton as this is easier to cut. I have explained to the children what is needed.
Thank you from Mrs Tilbrook.
It was a sporty day at Chigwell School today
and the pupils really entered in to the fun of
the event by dressing up in something sporty
for the day.
Well done to everyone who joined in and to all
the extra fund raising activities that took place.
We raised a most fantastic sum of £600!! This is to go
towards Mrs Punt’s 2014 Marathon fundraising for
Cancer Research.
Please also see page 11 for details of the next fundraising
coffee morning next Friday in the Costa Coffee bar.
As part of their studies on WWII the UI’s were set the task of making their own Anderson Shelter. I am sure you will

For the past couple of weeks LII have been developing their persuasive writing skills. We have also incorporated
speaking and listening into this unit, learning about formal debating methods. On Tuesday, LIIM shared their ideas
for a debate based on their own passions, which led to the class deciding on the motion:
“This house believes that exotic animals should be kept in zoos for their protection”
Each side then had time to prepare their arguments and justifications and present them to the class – with the
opposing team tasked to think on their feet to defend their points. It was a lively and interesting debate, with a
range of issues raised. On the side ‘for’ the motion, concerns about poaching, loss of land, extinction, scientific
research and entertainment were defended, whilst the opposition countered with lack of space, the effects of
human presence, the importance of living wild, the rights of animals and the climates of different countries.
After all the points were made, we voted, with a resounding majority going against the motion! Well done to everyone in the class, who researched and discussed their ideas, then presented them so persuasively to the rest of
the class.
Here’s something to think about over the weekend: how would you have voted?
This week the UI classes have been studying newspaper reports and how to write their own. They visited the
Pre Prep and interviewed the pupils and staff and then wrote their own article afterwards. Here are some
wonderful examples:
In September 2013 Chigwell School’s brand new, state of
the art Pre Prep opened it’s doors for the first time. Mrs
Gibbs, the head teacher, told us that she thought it was so
peaceful and a lovely place. All the teachers are so kind
and helpful. There are 109 lucky children. The reception
lady said “I love it. It feels like I am in a magical castle”.
Everyone loves the pre prep. It has lots of different activities they can do, such as cooking. They cook homemade
bread, gingerbread men and rice crispy cakes, yum! This is
what the year twos think of the school dinner. “Yummy,
delicious and nutritious”. The children love all the lessons.

The children can have music lessons to learn instruments such as guitar,
drums and violin.
They have a library with

bright and colourful and they help the children communicate and concentrate. They like to go on nature walks and
add up pine cones for maths. They even have a little pond.
The library is full of nice books and on World Book Day they
had to wear pyjamas from a bedtime story or just their
own PJs. Mrs Gibbs even teaches some lessons.
I asked Mrs Gibbs if they are naughty and she said “they
are all as good as gold”. Mrs Gibbs says it is exciting and
fun being a head teacher”.

Chigwell School’s U13 football team played against a very
strong Whitgift School in the INVESTEC Independent Schools
FA national cup final held at Burton Albion F.C. on Thursday
20th March.
This was the second national final in two years after the U16
team won the ISFA small schools shield last year. Reaching
the final was an outstanding achievement in itself as 71
teams from across the country had entered the tournament. The vast majority of schools who entered have far
more boys in a year group than the 44 boys that Chigwell has
to choose from.
The squad stayed in Nottingham overnight and enjoyed a
late breakfast before an impromptu stroll down the River Trent, even finding time to visit the City Ground, home of
Nottingham Forest.
The final was always going to be tense with Whitgift fielding their maximum allowance of 5 academy boys but Chigwell started extremely well and held off the early Whitgift attacks. However, after 17 minutes Whitgift struck
through a lovely piece of individual skill on the counter attack. Not to be deterred, Chigwell kept the game at 1-0
until after half time after Alex (IVS) made some fine saves in goal, but Whitgift struck the killer blow with 10 minutes
to go by making it 2-0.
Louis (IVT), who was playing his first game since September found himself through on goal for Chigwell but could
only fire wide and that chance would have made the last few minutes very interesting. Whitgit’s talented central
midfield player scored his hat-trick in the final minutes to make it 3-0, however the Chigwell team defended
throughout the game with intelligence and should be extremely proud of their achievement.
Over 120 supporters from Chigwell made the trip to Burton, including practically all the year 8’s and numerous family and friends. The supporters certainly created an excellent atmosphere to make the day extremely special for all
involved. The U13 team were also runners up in the IAPS national sixes tournament back in November and enjoyed
a fantastic tour to Barcelona in October so competing in this final was the icing on the cake after an incredible season.

Friday 14th March saw Chigwell's U10 Netball team take part in the Year 5 New Hall Netball Tournament. It was a
hot, sunny afternoon with plenty of netball to be played. Nine teams were entered and the first stages saw
Chigwell play all eight teams. This resulted in a fantastic six wins, one loss and one draw. This included wins against
Ursuline, Alleyn Court Prep, Widford Lodge and New Hall.
As a result of this fantastic display of netball Chigwell were placed 2nd out of the nine teams. The top four schools
were split into two semi-finals of which Chigwell faced Ursuline; a school they had already beaten earlier in the day.
At the full time whistle the scores were tied at 3-3 meaning that a golden goal would now be played. Unfortunately
for Chigwell it was Ursuline's centre pass which they managed to score on.
Now came the 3rd place play-off match whereby Chigwell faced Alleyn Court Prep School. Again a school they had
already faced earlier in the day and won against. The hot afternoon was starting to take its toll on the Chigwell
players and Alleyn Court proved too much for them with the match resulting in a 4-1 loss. Nevertheless this was an
awesome display of netball today from the Chigwell players. They not only played excellently but they were professional on and off the court. A huge “well done” to the girls.

Yesterday, 20th March, Capoeira Agora came to work with UI’s. The whole of UI
took part in a Brazilian dance called Capoeira. It was a fantastic experience because
it was something new and we had never heard of it.
Capoeira is a traditional Brazilian art form. It is the second most popular sport in Brazil after football. It is a mix of dancing, martial arts,
singing and the playing of different instruments. But the main rule is:
you must not touch your opponent, there is NO physical contact.
The teachers, Justyna and Colin, taught us a variety of moves, such as
sweeping over people’s heads, cartwheels, sweeping legs, scissors,
sliding and jumping.
We also played games against the teachers and each other. Whilst we were playing Capoeira some children
were playing the instruments and the others were singing and clapping.
We had a brilliant day, learnt lots and we were very tired afterwards.

This week in L1 the children have been exploring how a plant’s roots
and stem work:
We set up an experiment using celery, water, food colouring and a
plastic cup.
First, we gathered our equipment which was some celery, food colouring, a plastic cup and water.
Next we added food colouring to the cup of water.
After that we placed a celery stalk into the cup of water.
Finally, we left the celery in the coloured water for a few hours and
we observed it throughout the day and the following day.
We noticed that the celery was drinking the water up through its stem and into its leaves. The stem of the celery started
to turn red and blue, then the longer we left it we noticed the leaves started to change colour too, to red or blue.

HAY FEVER ALERT
Please remember to take your medication BEFORE you come to school.
Hay fever medication is NOT available at the Medical Centre.
Suggestions to help are:
Take your medication every day even if you think the pollen count may be
low.
Vaseline applied lightly around the nostrils may prevent some inhalation of pollen.
Washing your eyes and hands with water may also help.
You may find it useful to click on the link below for more information.
