THE METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART
Dear Members and Friends of The Metropolitan Museum of Art,
With the holiest of cities for Hindus and one of the most famous buildings in the world,
enchanting palaces, and intricately carved temples, North India has much to offer both the first-time
visitor and those who return to experience her splendors again and again.
Begin with three nights in the exuberant Indian capital of New Delhi, before experiencing the
wonders of the Ganges at dawn in Varanasi. Continue to Khajuraho, famous for its ornate temples;
and to Orchha, with its secluded palaces. In Agra, discover the consummate symbol of India, the aweinspiring Taj Mahal, as well as the majestic Red Fort. See the beautifully decorated Amber Fort in
Jaipur and conclude in romantic Udaipur, one of the world’s most beautiful cities. An optional threenight stay in Jodhpur is offered, following the main program.
We will stay at extraordinary hotels, one a former royal palace, and the magic of India will
cast its glow over all our activities. I hope

This morning we explore Old Delhi, including the
impressive Red Fort and Jama Masjid, both built in the
17th century by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. Lunch
is arranged at the Lodi Restaurant, in the famed Lodi
Gardens, before a visit to the National Museum, housing
an excellent collection of Indian sculpture and paintings.
The evening is at leisure.

Morning on the Ganges River, Varanasi.
Wednesday, January 30
Over the last thousand years, Delhi has been the capital
of seven empires, and there are traces of its Hindu, Muslim,
and British builders throughout the city. Today, Delhi
consists of the 17th- to 19th-century Old Delhi and the
newer sections constructed from 1913 to 1931 under
the supervision of British architects Edwin Lutyens and
Herbert Baker. Following an early afternoon lecture by
Christopher Noey, visits in New Delhi begin at Humayun’s
Tomb, a prototype of Indian garden tombs. Drive along
the broad Rajpath, then see the 13th-century Qutb Minar,
the world’s tallest minaret. Gather this evening for a
welcome reception and dinner.

VARANASI
Friday, February 1
Depart on a morning flight to Varanasi, the Hindu
holy city on the Ganges River. Upon arrival, transfer to
the Taj Gateway Hotel for lunch and check-in. In the
afternoon, visit the Bharat Kala Bhavan Museum at the
Benares Hindu University to see the collection of fine
paintings and sculpture. Prior to dinner, you may wish to
board a small private boat to witness an evening Hindu
Prayer Ceremony on the Ganges, a moving ritual that has
been observed for centuries.

An important place of pilgrimage, Varanasi regularly
draws Hindus for whom a morning dip in the sacred
Ganges is a daily ritual. Rise early for a boat ride on the
river at dawn. Following breakfast at the hotel, drive to
Sarnath for a visit to the Archaeological Museum to see
the sandstone sculpture collection. Continue to the airport
for the short flight to Khajuraho, where we will have lunch
and check-in at the Lalit Hotel. Khajuraho’s fame rests on
the artistry of its temple sculptures, carved 1,000 years ago,
that depict gods, guardians, dancers, and myriad erotic
scenes. Tour the nearby Western Group of temples, built
between 950 and 1050 C.E. during the Chandela Dynasty.
Return to the hotel for dinner.

Perhaps the consummate symbol of India, the Taj Mahal is
a masterpiece of elegance and grace. Built between 1632
and 1648, it was created by the Mughal Emperor Shah
Jahan in memory of his wife. We will visit the Taj Mahal
at sunrise to experience the magnificent views. After
breakfast, visit the 16th-century Red Fort, encompassing
the imperial city of the Mughal rulers, including many
palaces and two mosques. Continue to the jewel-like tomb
of Itmad-ud-Daulah, begun in 1622 for the Emperor
Jahangir’s father-in-law. Return to the hotel for lunch. In
the late afternoon, attend a lecture by Christopher Noey.

JAIPUR
Depart for Fatehpur Sikri, Emperor Akbar’s glorious and
deserted 16th-century city of red sandstone. After lunch,
continue to Jaipur, arriving at The Oberoi Rajvilas in the
late afternoon. Dinner is at the hotel.
This morning focus on the Eastern Group of temples
before we drive to Orchha, arriving in time for lunch.
See the 16th- and 17th-century palaces, beautifully set
on an island in the Betwa River. Many of these palaces
have been abandoned, but we can still marvel at the
intriguing architecture, including hanging balconies and
beautiful murals. Dinner and an overnight are at the Amar
Mahal Hotel.
