To avoid leftover paint, calculate the amount of paint needed for each project and then only buy enough paint to complete the job. If paint is leftover after a project, consider either using up the paint by recoating or properly storing the container for future touch-ups. Household hazardous waste (HHW) includes such unwanted items as spray paint, paint thinners, solvents, yard chemicals, pool chemicals, harsh cleaners, mercury, antifreeze and hobby chemicals. These items are accepted at HHW collections sponsored by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA). Macon County Environmental Management encourages residents to take advantage of these free collections which are only periodically offered downstate. Empty paint cans and cans containing dry paint are to be placed in the household trash with the lid of the can removed. Unwanted liquid paint must be properly disposed according to it characteristics— either latex or oil-based. For more information regarding HHW collections, visit the IEPA website www.epa.illinois.gov/topics/waste-management/ waste-disposal/household-hazardous-waste/ collections/index. Latex (water-based) paints are not considered hazardous and may be dried out by mixing with an absorbent such as kitty litter or sawdust. Once dry, the paint and container may be placed in the household trash with the lid removed. Oil-based paints, including stains and varnishes, are not recommended for home processing since these products are characterized as hazardous due to their toxicity and flammability. As a last resort for disposal, unwanted liquid paint in its original, labeled container may be brought to a paint collection sponsored by Macon County Environmental Management. Latex and oil-based paint, which is without a label must be brought to a HHW collection.
