PODIATRIC PATHOLOGY REPORT
DIAGNOSIS:
SKIN, RIGHT ANTERIOR LOWER LEG, PUNCH BIOPSIES (two):
- SPONGIOTIC DERMATITIS, SUBACUTE, MOST CHARACTERISTIC OF NUMMULAR
(eczematous) DERMATITIS.
- A PERIODIC ACID SCHIFF REACTION FAILS TO DEMONSTRATE FUNGAL ELEMENTS.
COMMENT: These histopathologic features may be seen in association with conditions as disparate as acute
allergic contact dermatitis, early-evolving nummular (eczematous) dermatitis, and Id reaction.
In light of the constellation of both clinical and histopathologic features in this case; one potential therapeutic
course for this patient could include the application of a low potency (class 6-7) topical corticosteroid. The
therapeutic value of such steroids may be augmented by concomitant use of topical urea.
CLINICAL INFORMATION:
Dermatitis. Rule out tinea corporis. Lower leg.
GROSS DESCRIPTION:
Received in formalin fixative are two 2-mm punch biopsy specimens which are submitted en toto for processing in
2 cassettes.
MICROSCOPIC DESCRIPTION:
Sections demonstrate a superficial perivascular infiltrate comprised of lymphocytes. There is diffuse spongiosis
and an admixed compact and basket-woven stratum corneum with intracorneal serum. Scattered intradermal
eosinophils are seen. A PAS stain fails to demonstrate fungal organisms.

I am very pleased to welcome you to NYCPM’s 2013 Academic Convocation and
Scholarship Benefit Dinner, and to have the opportunity to offer my congratulations,
gratitude and good wishes to tonight’s distinguished honorees. Tonight’s event is
one of a handful during the year at which we come together to show our support
for the College in very tangible ways. Our presence here reflects the strength of the
bond we feel with NYCPM, as alumni, faculty, administration or friends of the
College. For each one of us, the College occupies a special place in our lives.
This is an event that has taken on increasing importance for the College in today’s
economic climate. It has become much more than simply an enjoyable event to
attend. It has become one of a few key events during the year at which the alumni
and friends of the College can tangibly demonstrate their pride and their
confidence in this institution, while at the same time helping to strengthen it through
their attendance and participation.
We are assembled here tonight to honor three women who have made significant
contributions to the College as well as to the fields of podiatry and podiatric
medical education, through their service on the NYCPM Board and through their
work in the community:
Susheel Bathla, DPM, CEO of Staten Island Podiatry, a 30-year-old practice in Staten
Island, NY. Dr. Bathla also serves as a doctor of primary podiatric medicine within
the practice, and also has two additional offices, one in Brooklyn and one in
Jamaica, New York.
Kathleen Reilly Fallon, DPM, a Board-Certified Wound Care Specialist and Foot &
Ankle Specialist. She has worked at the Midtown Health Center in Manhattan for
the last 16 years, and for over 10 years at St. Vincent's Midtown Hospital and St.
Vincent's Family Health Center as a doctor/surgeon, as well as a Clinical Supervisor,
Department of Surgery.
Halina M. Semla-Pulaski, DPM has been in private practice since 1990, maintaining

Director, Medical Technologist, and Senior Medical Technologist at such institutions
as Glubczyce District Hospital, in Kietrz, Poland; Long Island Jewish Hospital/The
Hillside Medical Center; and Nassau Hospital (now Winthrop University Hospital).
Each of these three women has in her own way had a major and lasting impact on
the College that we are acknowledging tonight.
Your presence here is very much appreciated. On behalf of the entire College
community, I thank you for your support of the New York College of Podiatric
Medicine.

History of the College
The Field of Podiatric Medicine is Born
Until 1885, chiropody was a craft. Its craftsmen were men and women who
learned from their predecessors that by applying the skill acquired in training, they
could alleviate pain and discomfort for those afflicted with minor foot ailments.
In 1905, the New York State legislature awarded chiropodists the right to organize
and to determine the fitness of individuals desiring to practice chiropody.
By 1911, the New York School of Chiropody had been created, dedicated to
educating and training chiropodists. Dr. Maurice J. Lewi, a physician and educator, then serving as Secretary to the New York State Board of Examiners, was
named the first president of the school.
Dr. Lewi, an activist and leader in educational reforms, formulated the first legislation governing the practice of chiropody. Working in concert with a small group
of educators, Dr. Lewi then devised curricula and training programs for the first
course of study at the school.
He suggested the term chiropody be changed to podiatry as etymologically
correct. Subsequently, the term podiatry was adopted by other colleges of
podiatric medicine and by the American Podiatric Medical Association.
Podiatric Education Becomes Increasingly Rigorous
The admission requirement for the first class in 1911 was one year of high school
education.
Over the years, requirements for entering students changed as the profession
grew and demand for podiatric services expanded into specialized foot care
and treatment programs requiring knowledge of general medical sciences,
orthopedics and surgery. Educational preparation and clinical training programs
were developed to meet these requirements.
In 1919, the College was renamed the First Institute of Podiatry.
By 1940, podiatrists had to possess a doctorate in podiatric medicine in order to
take the licensing examination (required in New York State).
Today, entering students must have successfully completed a baccalaureate
degree from an accredited college in the United States or abroad and have
completed a number of specified science prerequisites.
Basic science prerequisites are important for the student of podiatric medicine in
understanding and applying the scientific concepts and skills of the Doctor of
Podiatric Medicine.
Independence and an Absolute Charter
From 1939 to 1955, the College was known as the Long Island University College of
Podiatry. Upon dissolution of this affiliation, the College became an independent
not-for-profit institution.
In 1957, it was renamed the M.J. Lewi College of Podiatry, in honor of its founder
and first president. In 1969, an absolute charter was granted the trustees of the
College by the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York.
In 1972, the College received its current name, the New York College of Podiatric
Medicine.
Rapid Growth
History of the College
Located in the City of New York, the College had its first home at 125th Street and
rapidly outgrew its quarters. Three successive moves culminated in the erection in
1927 of the present College building dedicated to podiatric medical education
and clinical training. A building grant in 1976 from the U.S. Department of Health,
Education and Welfare enabled the creation of a separate, new clinical training
facility, an expanded, updated library and renovations to the existing College
building.
Completed in 1978, the new facility, the Foot Center of New York, provides clinical
services to the community and continues to be affiliated with the College. The
largest center of its kind, the Foot Center of New York ministers to a wide and diverse
patient load in nearly 25,000 patient visits annually.
In recent years, NYCPM has expanded into the international educational arena with
twice-yearly programs for podologists from Spain; a program at Foot Center of New
York for podiatry students from Canada, and an affiliation with their school in
Quebec; an externship at the Sheba Medical Center at Tel Hashomer, in Israel; and
prominent guest speakers from around the world. The College has also reached out
to its surrounding community, offering foot screenings at numerous neighborhood
health fairs, as well as at such events as the American Diabetes Association’s annual
Diabetes Expo and the Central Harlem Health Revival.
Other College events instituted within the last two decades include the annual
White Coat Ceremony for first-year students, held at the New York Academy of
Medicine; an annual student-initiated, student-run Residency Fair, featuring
representatives from over fifty hospitals; free diabetes workshops offered to
members of the surrounding community; an annual student-initiated and
student-organized inter-podiatric college research fair; an extremely active
on-going series of Continuing Medical Education courses and workshops; and a
Mini-Fellowship Program for surgical training of podiatry residents in the New York
Metro hospitals.
The College has recently completed a series of renovations that have brought its
classrooms and labs to the leading edge of medical education technology. A new
Anatomy Lab and a new Clinical Skills Lab, as well as fully renovated classrooms,
computer rooms, study areas and other College facilities, enable students to work in
an environment optimized for learning and for study. An Interactive Medical
Education Initiative, in which each student is given an iPad Mini in order to be able
to interact with the College’s forward-thinking curriculum, enables students to
consume the many digital assets at their disposal, such as Lecture Capture, Medical
Videos, Lecture Handouts, and Notes. This “iME initiative” is reinventing the podiatric
medical school curriculum, and NYCPM has become one of the first in the nation to
offer a digital, interactive learning environment to its incoming students.
NYCPM is affiliated with a number of leading medical
institutions in the New York City area, including the
Columbia University College of Physicians &
Surgeons, Harlem Hospital Center, Lincoln
Medical & Mental Health Center, Metropolitan
Hospital Center, Morrisania Diagnostic
Treatment Center, Nassau University Medical
Center, New York-Presbyterian Healthcare
System, and Parker Jewish Institute for
Health Care and Rehabilitation. These
affiliations provide additional outstanding
educational and clinical opportunities for
NYCPM’s students.

expressed a desire to become leaders in
Podiatric Medicine and to obtain influential
positions in health care institutions with which
they will become affiliated after residency
training.
Candidates for the Dual Degree Program must meet all eligibility requirements
for both degree programs.
Applicants meeting the requirements for
participation in the dual degree program need not submit two applications, as
acceptance into and recommendation by the Admissions Office at NYCPM will
suffice. Students must maintain a B average in their course work at NYCPM to
continue in the dually sponsored program.
Currently, there are seven students pursuing the dually sponsored degree, with
two graduating in June of 2014. MPH students must complete 32 hours of
didactic instruction, complete a 150-hour practicum, and perform meaningful
research documented in a written thesis. Students’ interests are as diverse as the
NYCPM student population itself, with some having an interest in clinic
demographics, others in epidemiological screening of large populations for
specific diseases, while still others are interested in global health, emerging
pathogens and medical economics. There are tracks for all of these sub-groups
within the program.
The program’s first two graduates are Michael Gazes and Emily Pepyne, both of
whom will receive their DPM and MPH degrees in June. As trailblazers in the
program, Michael and Emily proudly led the way for future generations of
students. They earned the respect of Mount Sinai faculty members and formed
life-long friendships with the Sinai medical students. Other students in the
program are Yasha Mathur & Endri Afesllari (2015), Michelle Kaufman and
Naeemah Ruffin (2016) and Yisheng Cao (2017).

Dear Friends:
It is a great pleasure to welcome everyone to the New York College of Podiatric
Medicine’s Annual Convocation and Testimonial Dinner.
By expanding the use of preventative care and increasing the quality of the services
offered in our hospitals and clinics, we have made amazing gains in public health over the past
decade, and New Yorkers are living longer than ever before as a result. As we work to provide
even more people with access to the treatments they need, we are delighted to have the support
of world-class medical institutions like NYCPM. For more than century, this school has
provided its students with unparalleled academic training and the chance to participate in
residency and post-graduate programs at world renowned health care facilities. Many of its
graduates have gone on to become leaders in the field of podiatry, and we applaud NYCPM and
all those associated with it for their commitment to offering top-quality care to people across our
City and beyond.
On behalf of all New Yorkers, congratulations to this year’s honorees – Dr. Susheel
Bathla, Dr. Kathleen Reilly Fallon, and Dr. Halina M. Semla-Pulaski. Please accept my best
wishes for a wonderful event and continued success.

Dear Friends,
Greetings to everyone gathered here tonight at the New York College of Podiatric Medicine
(NYCPM) Annual Convocation and Testimonial Dinner!
One of the great privileges and joys of serving on the City Council is being able to see first-hand
the extraordinarily good work being done by so many groups and organizations around the city. In
neighborhoods all across the five boroughs, these groups are working hard to help make
everyone’s quality of life better and ensure that our city continues to grow and thrive. Our city is
undoubtedly better off, thanks to their care and support, and we’re so deeply grateful for their
service.
On this very special night of celebration, I would like to thank the NYCPM and its dedicated staff
for being one of the nation’s first medical colleges devoted to educating and training doctors in the
field of podiatric medicine.
Congratulations as well to this year’s honorees, Dr. Susheel Bathla, Dr. Kathleen Reilly Fallon, Dr.
