Inspiring Possibilities - Celebrating Life Through Community Living
LOCATIONS
by Jennifer Creeden
Community Living
Renfrew County South
was honoured to host the
major photographic
exhibition of over 60
photos of people across
Ontario supported by
Community Living
agencies. The exhibition
illustrates how people
with an intellectual
disability are leading full
lives in the community
through work, play,
leisure, home life and
volunteering. Each photo
is a testimony to how
these extraordinary
people and Community
Living are inspiring
possibilities.
PhotoSensitive is a not-for-profit collective of professional
photographers who donate their time and talents to using the power of
photography to bring about social change and awareness. Community
Living Renfrew County South would like to express their sincere thanks to
Fred Chartrand who not only made several trips to Renfrew to take photos
but continues to stay connected to us and the individuals we support through
his photography and friendship.
Community Living Renfrew County South would like to thank
everyone who came to view this wonderful display, the Renfrew Legion for
providing us the location to host the exhibition and special thanks to Diana
Wakely, Leslie Cross and Jo-Anne McDonald of the Renfrew Art Guild for
the loan of the backdrops and easels and the assistance with arranging the
display for everyone to enjoy.

Adaptive Sailing
by Christopher Dregas
by Carolyn Miller
On Tuesday, July 14, 2009 we went to the
Nepean Sailing Club.
There were lots of apartment buildings
in Ottawa that we could see across the river.
I went for a bouncy, bumpy ride in a
sailboat. There were lots of waves and it was
windy. Julia was the volunteer who helped me
sail.
We had a picnic lunch. I had fun and
I’d like to go there again!
Wow! What an awesome time we had on Friday, July 10,
2009!! Beth Van Dusen (pictured in the sailboat), Gilles
Jodoin and Doris Pierce went to the Nepean Sailing Club
and tried their hands at sailing!! There were two sailboats
to choose from and three volunteers there to help them
into the boat. Doris used the sling to get down into the
boat while Gilles and Beth stepped down into the boat on
their own. The sun was shining and the wind was blowing
that day which were perfect conditions for a sail around
the harbour. Dick Bell Park is extremely wheelchair
accessible, which makes it so much easier for some of us
to get around there.
We look forward to several more Fridays spent
happily sailing or enjoying our picnic lunch and watching
the world go by. What a day!!

Montreal Trip by Janice Lee
On June 17, 2009 Ruth Karras, Jerry Hodgins,
Garry Inglis, Mary Ellen McNulty, Eldon Behm
and I went to Montreal for a couple of days. When
we got there we checked into our rooms at the
Quality Inn and talked about what to do that night.
We decided to see Old Montreal and take a tour on
the Horse and Buggy. It was a lot of fun, we took a
lot of pictures of Old Montreal. It was nice to see
the old and modern buildings in that part of the city.
After that we went for supper at a Greek
Restaurant, a real nice place.
Thursday morning, June 18, after breakfast
we headed to Parc Safari to see the animals, there
was lots to see. We drove through the park first and
saw a lot of animals such as elephants, giraffes,
zebras, lions, tigers, and took a lot of pictures.
There were some rides as well. Garry, Mary Ellen, Eldon and I went on the ferris wheel and some
other rides while Ruth and Jerry watched us. We had a lot of fun. We went back to our hotel rooms to freshen
up a bit to go out to a nice buffet restaurant in the city. There were lots of restaurants to choose from. On
Friday, June 19 we headed for home after we had breakfast.
Prehistoric World by Jennifer Roche
On July 10, 2009 we went to
Prehistoric World near Morrisburg.
Jesse Stroud, Kevin Ostroskie, Pauline
Deslaurier, Tom Welch, David
Kenopic, Sharon Dellaire and I had a
great time.
We saw some real looking
dinosaurs made from concrete. Some
of the dinosaurs we saw were
stegosaurus, brontosaurus, triceratops
and tyrannosaurus rex, they were
giants.
We had lunch and walked
around the park.

M. Sullivan & Son Golf Tournament
Volunteers by Laura Pirie
by Tina MacLaren
Our Association is fortunate to have so many caring
people in the community that want to be involved
and enrich others lives; these people are volunteers
and they are an asset to the successful operation of
Community Living Renfrew County South and an
asset to our community.
An appreciation luncheon was held on April
20th; a small gesture and an opportunity to thank
our volunteers. It was a full house with over 60
volunteers attending and enjoying the occasion to
visit with one another. Thanks to all our volunteers
for your support and kindness.
The M. Sullivan & Son Golf Tournament was held
May 29th at the Madawaska Golf course in Arnprior.
Thank you to the golfers, sponsors and
businesses who contributed to the success of the day.
This year $14,000.00 was raised enabling 12
teenagers and 4 children to participate in day camp
activities.
Plans are already underway
for our 10th annual tournament next
year.

Bullying Workshop by Joanne Vincent
As part of our Personal Outcome
Measures presentations, 30
individuals attended the Bullying
Workshop on Wednesday, July 15,
2009 at the Renfrew Legion.
Maria Hawkins from
Ottawa along with her guitar player
did the presentation. Community
Living Renfrew County South
staff Frank Campbell played the
other guitar. Maria used lots of
music and dancing in her
presentation as well as role
playing about bullying situations.
We learned to hold up our
hand and say STOP.
We talked about how we
feel when we are bullied.
Maria had a special gift for
everybody.
I enjoyed everything about
the workshop.
Pool League by Anne Dregas, Sarah Senack
The Pool League was great and we
had a lot of laughs. This year we
went to Rocky Mountain House for
dinner which was good. Good
friendships were made. We talked
about sports and our pets. There
were two winning teams this year,
they were Geraldine Prince and Ryan
Hickey, and Tom Welch and Sarah
Senack. We are learning a new rule
every year and all of us are getting better.
We are looking forward to playing pool
next year.
A Great Evening at the Bobby Orr Hall of Fame by Ron Windle
One of my lifetime goals has been to meet
the legendary hockey player Bobby Orr.
On Saturday, June 13, 2009 I
travelled to Parry Sound with Dave Kenopic
and attended the Bobby Orr Hall of Fame
induction ceremony. After the ceremony
and a performance by Tom Cochrane I met
both Tom Cochrane and Bobby Orr. I also
met the inductees and got autographs from
everyone.
Bobby was very friendly and
genuinely interested in who I was and what
I did.
It was a special time for me to meet
Bobby Orr - the Hockey Legend.

Taking A Trip On The Wild Side by Jessalyn Harper and Meagan Lance
As camp leaders for the 2009
Youth Summer Program we
would like to extend our
sincerest best wishes and a
safe summer to all on behalf
of the members of the day
camp.
Despite such a rainy
start to summer, we have
made the best of it through
trips to museums and zoos, an
arcade and the Bonnechere
Caves. And that’s just to start!
We have been working on many summer long projects, one of which includes a memory box. We have been
filling these up with precious memories. Some of these memories are represented with pins, granite rocks,
sponge insects, many pictures, ceramic paintings, and ticket stubs. We have the pleasure of working with
seven teenagers this summer, and have engaged them in many activities, sports and community events. Some
of these which will occur in the near future are: the ‘go bananas’ festival, the Beachburg Fair, a trip to the fire
station, a presentation from a police officer, a trip to Logos Land and much more. The picture seen here, was
taken at the Museum of Civilization, one of the many trips we have taken so far. This picture includes
members and leaders of the Youth Camp, standing amidst a dragon; one of the many mythical beasts we got to
see that day.
From both of us, a wonderful summer to all.
Yard Sale by Cathy Cuff, Pauline
Victorian Tea by Gloria Tunn
Deslaurier, Isabel Rusenstrom, Connie Gale
On June 6, 2009,
we held a yard
sale which was a
huge success.
Thank you to all
of you for your support.
We would like to thank
all our friends, families and staff
who donated or assisted us with
our sale. A special thank you to
Carol Cuff, Jim Panton, Helen
Deslaurier, Mitzi Bertrand, Willa
Smith, Peggy and Bill Rochon
for all the extra things you did
and for always being there for
us.
Our 4th annual Victorian Tea is
coming upon us, again. The tea is
being held at the Armouries. The
proceeds will be going to Kids Corp
and their program for pregnant
mothers. The theme is “Mothers
and Daughters”, as well as “Linen,
Lace, and Pearls”.
The Victorian Tea Hostess
meeting will be September 15 at
6:00 p.m., downstairs at
Community Living Renfrew
County South. We hope to see
many hostesses this year as we keep
growing for our charities. If you
have any questions or would like to
be a hostess, please contact me at
613-432-7520.

Our Outing by Bill McAdam, Gordon Shean, Clare Kenopic, Donna
On June 28, 2009 individuals and staff from 874
Raglan St. S., travelled to the beautiful area of the
Five Span Bridge at Pakenham, Ontario.
A surprise for the folks and an outdoor
picnic lunch was enjoyed by all. Some great
weather and lots to see - a canoe coming up the
river, a kayak, lots of birds, a plane flew overhead
and a butterfly even landed on Clare’s shoulder!
Yantha, Dwane Votour and Maureen Springer
After lunch, a short walk about - a black lab was
in the shadows looking at the minnows there. Lots of
people walked in the shallow waters, over the many
levels of flowing water.
There were quite a few trucks and boat trailers.
We even saw a fisherman pull in a fish!
Some photos, some sun, and the great weather
made this a day to remember.
Summer Opportunities in Arnprior by Vicki Colotel & Matt Sharpe
Once again this year Summer Opportunities - Youth Summer Camp has kicked off to a
great start in Arnprior. Vicki Colotelo and Matt Sharpe are back for their third summer
with Community Living and have planned a ton of amazing activities and trips for the
teens in Arnprior. Already this year the camp have gone to Papanak Park Zoo, spent the
day on the slides at Logos Land and explored the dark tunnels of the Bonnechere Caves.
New this summer, the teen camp has planned a Baseball BBQ Day for July 30th. Make
sure you come out for some baseball, food, swimming and more. Although it has been a
relatively wet summer so far, the St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church has
provided an amazing space for camp headquarters. Despite the rain the camp
has still had plenty of time to spend at the beach at Robert Simpson Park and
to play around in the brand new Splash Pad! The teens have had an amazing
summer so far and have a lot to look forward to. Within the next few weeks
the camp is planning a birthday party for everyone at the camp and more
trips such as the Kanata Wave Pool, Museum of Civilization and Midway
Arcade!
Multi-Sensory Room by Sandy Shean
Community Living Renfrew County South has started fundraising
for a multi-sensory room! Our first donation of $1000.00 for the
project has been made by the Town of Arnprior Hockey Club.
The club raised the money through their 17th Annual Employees
Only Hockey Tournament recently hosted at the Nick Smith
Center. We would like to thank the club for their generous
donation. The multi-sensory room will be available to people of
all ages with disabilities who live in the catchment area of
Renfrew County South. The room will provide a safe, nonthreatening environment with state of the art technology that will
provide lighting, sound, aroma, tactile surfaces, moving images
and other sensory experiences. Our goal is to raise enough
money to open the room by Christmas 2009.

Marking The End Of An Era by Jennifer Creeden
Anchor’s Aweigh by Nicole Brown, Alana Peer,
Gloria Tunn
Community Living Associations across Ontario
marked the closing of the institutions at the end of
March 2009. Finally, the doors of Rideau Regional
Centre, Huronia Regional Centre and the Southwest
Regional Centre are closed forever.
Community Living Renfrew County South
had the privilege of honouring this momentous
occasion in a ceremony with Community Living
Upper Ottawa Valley. Christie and Jennifer took part
in this event which included sober reflections on the
past, celebrations for the future, lighting of the
Celebratory Candle, music and a plaque presentation
to John Yakabuskie, MPP Renfrew – Nipissing –
Pembroke.
Congratulations to Margie Munhall, Arnold Wall,
Mary Ellen McNulty, Rebekka Zimmerling, Clare
Kenopic, Teresa Powell, Tom Welch, Brian Moore
and Debbie Broome who have all shared in the
winnings.
Anchor’s Aweigh, a weight loss system,
meets weekly to explore awareness and encourage
healthy lifestyles through hands on teaching, using
techniques such as videos, activity, portion size,
and real life situations. Participants have certainly
enjoyed going home with nutritious recipes to try,
as well as seeing themselves shedding pounds with
positive results.
We welcome ideas and information
supporting a healthy lifestyle.
CCR and Outreach have been providing
meals in conjunction with this philosophy. Our
pizzas are now whole wheat loaded with veggies,
served with the added choice of juice and water.
Menus are made in advance as our meals are served
with Canada’s Food Guide in mind, offering
opportunity to purchase meals of choice. To be
successful, team work is necessary as “many hands
make light work”.
Blue Jays by Dwane Votour
“Fresh baked” pies, cakes, squares,
cookies, assorted fudges and
chocolates, etc. for sale. Goods
baked with Splenda available.
By order only, phone
613-432-6763, and ask for Gloria
or Alana.
On July 21, 2009, Bill McAdam and I
went to Toronto on the train to see a Blue
Jay’s ball game. We stayed at the Hyatt
Regency, which was only a few blocks
from the Rodger's Centre. Bill enjoyed
taking the train from Ottawa to Toronto.
Toronto played against Cleveland, and
our seats were just up behind third base.
Unfortunately the Jays lost with a score
ending 2 to1 for Cleveland, but what a
game. Bill is already planning for next
years trip to Toronto to see his favourite
team, so I guess we will see you at the
game next year.

Bingo/Games by Gloria Tunn
Friends!!! by Gloria Tunn
Connie Gale had a hip
replacement earlier in the
summer. Since she was
not able to come to work
we took our June Bingo/
Games night to her. Our
Thursday Ladies Group
also took a lunch over to
enjoy with her. Everyone
is looking forward to
seeing Connie back to
work in September.
From left to right are
Margie Munhall, Mark
Humphries and Connie.
This past year saw us saying
“goodbye” to friends and
saying “hello” to new ones.
Major Linda Watts
from the Salvation Army,
moved to Sydney, Nova
Scotia.
Connie Ryan sold
“Best Regards” in Renfrew.
AARS Ceramics has
closed up shop, and so Arlene
will be missed.
We have lost Cindy
Mohns, Chris Emond, Hajro
Avdovich and Walter Miller.
Staff member Blanche
Dalziel retired July 24 after
eight years with us and
Valance Cornect moved to
Newfoundland.
Majors Glenn and
Jeananne Wirchowsky have
moved from Cornwall to lead
at the Salvation Army, and to
lead the Faith Group.
We now have Karaoke
night at the Legion in
Renfrew, and Bingo/ Games
night is new.
Richard and Denise
Gagnon are new faces seen
around different events.
Janice Rozycki is a new face
at CAS in Renfrew. There are
many new faces working as
support throughout
Community Living Renfrew
County South. So, “goodbye”
to the old and “hello” to the
new.
Barnet Cottage by Joanne Vincent
Everyone went to Barnet Cottage
for the day. We sat indoors most of
the day because the weather was
very cold. Even though it was cold
people were in good spirits.
The theme was Hawaiian
and most of us dressed up. We
played games, had a sing song and
people took pictures.
The rain held off for awhile
and we had really good burgers
with pineapple in them and dessert.

2009.
There was lots of music, clapping hands
and dancing feet. The place was jam packed. I
had lots of fun and the actors were funny. My
picture was taken in front of the “Grease

also came home with a CD from Taylor Hicks
who played Teen Angel in the play and was a past

there and I hope to go again. Thank you to

We Will Remember!
by Tina MacLaren
Cindy Mohns passed away at the
Arnprior Hospital on July 5,
2009. Cindy had been a part of
Community Living day supports
for many years. Here are some
ways in which her friends in
Arnprior remember her; Cindy
loved to go to the restaurant for
tea and lunch, she enjoyed
folding laundry and being
helpful, she was really good at being the banker in the
"Money Game", she always played cards with Helen
and won! She was generous with her things and with
her compliments, "You are so beautiful" was a comment
she would often give to her friends. She was a good
friend and would invite you to her place for a party and
would remember your name and your birthday even if
you only told her once. Cindy loved her family and
would regularly share with her friends all about what
they were up to. Cindy's friends remember her nice
smile, her sense of humour, and that she was pleasant to
be around. We are thankful for the memories that each
of us will keep of Cindy and grateful to her for the way
in which she showed us how to be a friend to one
another.
Good bye Cindy, we will miss you.
by Cyndi Wilson
On Friday, July 31,
2009 at Our Lady of
Fatima church in
Renfrew, friends and
family gathered to
say goodbye to one of
Community Living’s
earliest service
recipients. Walter
(Joseph) Miller
passed away at home
on July 27, 2009 at
the age of 67.
Walter was active in ARC Industries
woodworking business as early as 1969, and
began receiving residential support in 1985.
Walter was also active in a variety of sporting
ventures over the years, i.e. ball, floor hockey,
bowling and curling.
Walter will be missed by his long time
companion Margie Munhall.
Rest in peace.
