Deanna Smith LA 8 Freak the Mighty assessment Deanna Smith LA 8 Freak the Mighty freak the mıghty - novel questıons Ch. 1 and 2 Inference an educated guess about what a character is like based on information in the story. Fill in the chart with what you can infer about the characters of Max and Freak. Max Freak (Kevin) Assessment: 4321 Deanna Smith LA 8 Motivation reasons why the character did something thoughts and feelings What do you think Kevin's motives might be for his treatment of Max when they first meet? Moodle Questions: What do you think about Kevin? What do you think about Max? Freak the Mighty On a Quest for Music Example #1 Listen after reading ch. 1 The novel Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick lends itself beautifully to a filmmaking experience. It is a story of struggle and success, goodness and evil. In keeping with the plot line and the theme of the text, the following musical selections are recommended as excellent choices to accompany the video footage of the film. Many selections are given, with reference given to the placement of each and justification for the choice. The first song is suggested as the opening number for the film. In the first chapter of the novel, "The Unvanquished Truth", the speaker, Max, talks honestly about himself, revealing his character flaws. The song "Fooling Yourself" by Styx mirrors Max's view of the world. The long instrumental introduction is well suited to establishing the drama of the story. Fooling Yourself Written by Tommy Shaw Lead vocals by Tommy Shaw Make a List of Song Ideas for the Beginning or for Kevin and Max: You see the world through your cynical eyes You’re a troubled young man I can tell You’ve got it all in the palm of your hand But your hand’s wet with sweat and your head needs a rest And you’re fooling yourself if you don’t believe it You’re kidding yourself if you don’t believe it How can you be such an angry young man When your future looks quite bright to me How can there be such a sinister plan That could hide such a lamb, such a caring young man Find the song and listen. You’re fooling yourself if you don’t believe it You’re kidding yourself if you don’t believe it Get up, get back on your feet You’re the one they can’t beat and you know it Come on, let’s see what you’ve got Just take your best shot and don’t blow it You’re fooling yourself if you don’t believe it You’re killing yourself if you don’t believe it Get up, get back on your feet You’re the one they can’t beat and you know it Come on, let’s see what you’ve got Just take your best shot and don’t blow it http://www.lyricsfreak.com/s/styx/fooling+yourself_10226068.html http://lyrics.wikia.com/index.php?title=Styx:_Chapter_Three&image=Styx__The_Best_Of_Times_The_Best_Of_Styxjpg Deanna Smith LA 8 Freak the Mighty Ch. 3 and 4 Foreshadowing provides a hint of what is to occur later What do you think might be foreshadowed by the comments about Kevin's health "...and he sounds like he can hardly breath." (p.12) and "He's able to hump down the steps by himself, except it makes him sort of out of breath, you can hear him wheezing or I guess you'd call it panting, like a dog does on a hot day." (p.15)? Write your thoughts below. Assessment: 4321 Deanna Smith LA 8 Freak the Mighty Ch. 5 and 6 Fact vs. Opinion Fact statements that you can prove Opinion statements that tell what someone thinks about something Find 3 or more examples of facts and opinions in ch. 5 and 6 and place them in the chart below. Facts Assessment: 4321 Deanna Smith LA 8 Opinions Freak the Mighty Ch. 7 Irony a contrast between reality and appearance, or between what is expected and what happens. Max makes the comment, "Me rescuing Freak. What a joke, right?" Do you think he feels that to be an ironic assessment of the situation? Why or why not? Write an explanation of the situation in the novel and give your assessment on why this is an example of irony. Moodle Question: What makes Freak the Mighty such a great knight? What qualities and traits do they have that meet the Code for Chivalry? Moodle Question: If Freak the Mighty were to ask you to choose a location for a quest in this area, what would you recommend and why? Assessment: 4321 Deanna Smith LA 8 Code of Chivalry must read before answering Moodle questions. Freak the Mighty On a Quest for Music Example #2 listen after reading ch. 7 Stand Rascal Flatts You feel like a candle in a hurricane Just like a picture with a broken frame Alone and helpless Like you've lost your fight But you'll be alright, you'll be alright [Chorus:] Cause when push comes to shove You taste what you're made of You might bend, till you break Cause its all you can take On your knees you look up Decide you've had enough You get mad you get strong Wipe your hands shake it off Then you Stand, Then you stand Chapter 6 Close Encounters of the Turd Kind I chose this song for the part when Freak can't see the fireworks so Max lifts him up onto his shoulders. When it says "You feel like a candle in a hurricane...", that is like Freak. When it says "When you stand..." it's like Max. The music has a great beat and it really fits when the two are watching the fireworks. The words have a good significance to this part. Make a List of Song Ideas for Chapter 6 and/or 7: Find the song and listen. Life's like a novel With the end ripped out The edge of a canyon With only one way down Take what you're given before its gone Start holding on, keep holding on [Repeat Chorus] Everytime you get up And get back in the race One more small piece of you Starts to fall into place Oh [Repeat Chorus] http://www.lyricsfreak.com/r/rascal+flatts/stand_20450453.html Deanna Smith LA 8 http://www.freefoto.com/preview/901882/ChristmasCandle Freak the Mighty Example #3 listen after reading ch. 9 Knights of Cydonia Muse Ahhh Ahhh Ahhh Ahhh Ahhh Ahhh Ahhh Ahhh Ahhh Ahhh Ahhh Ahhh Ahhh Ahhh Ahhh Ahhh Ahhh Ahhh Come ride with me Through the veins of history I'll show you how God Falls asleep on the job The next song up is "Knights of Cydonia", by Muse. The song is generally about taking adventures, and the music video implies an imaginary adventure. This goes very well with when Max and Kevin become Freak the Mighty. They start going on make believe adventures, and become nearly honorary knights. The strong, almost hypnotizing lyrics have a very powerful effect on the listener, and the changes of vocals seems to make the main characters of the lyrics very powerful sounding. Just like Freak the Mighty. Make a List of Song Ideas that show Adventure and Fun: And how can we win? When fools can be Kings Dont waste your time Or time will waste you... Ahhh Ahhh Ahhh Ahhh Ahhh Ahhh Ahhh Ahhh Ahhh Ahhh Ahhh Ahhh Ahhh Ahhh Ahhh Ahhh Ahhh Ahhh Find the song and listen. Sometimes a central character in the story tells what is happening, sometimes the storyteller is a minor character, or a narrator who sees everything. Sometimes the writer switches point of view from one character to another. Who tells most of the story in Freak the Mighty? Rewrite an interesting part of the story that you've read so far from a different character's point of view. (12 paragraphs). Please write this on loose leaf and hand in to bucket. /10 marks point of view assignment Deanna Smith LA 8 Freak the Mighty Ch. 15 Suspense a state of mental uncertainty, excitement or indecision. In literature, suspense is a quality of tension in a plot which sustains interest and makes readers want to know what will happen next. How do you feel at the end of chapter 15? What has the author interjected? How do you think this will change the story? Moodle Question: Choose your favorite word from Freak's dictionary, give the definition and explain why you like it. Answer the following question in a paragraph, use evidence from the novel to support your opinion: Can people change? Write this on loose leaf and hand in to bucket before continuing the book. Opinion paragraph assessment /5 What are the benefits and disadvantages of the combo Freak the Mighty? Benefits Assessment: 4321 Deanna Smith LA 8 Disadvantages Freak the Mighty Song 6 listen after finishing novel The final selection is intended for play at the end of the film. It is Pearl Jam's "Man of the Hour", a farewell song to a dying man. Although Kevin is not an old man at the time of his death, the lyrics speak eloquently of a fond farewell to one who has made a difference in the lives of others. This is especially true for young Max in this novel. Because of Kevin, his life will be richer and greater for many years to come. The riveting vocal and instrumental tracks of the song will haunt the viewer and maybe even evoke a tear or two. Man of the Hour Pearl Jam Make a List of Song Ideas that show Friendship: Tidal waves don’t beg forgiveness 'CRASHED' and on their way Father he enjoyed collisions; others walked away A snowflake falls in may. And the doors are open now as the bells are ringing out Cause the man of the hour is taking his final bow Goodbye for now. Find the song and listen. Nature has its own religion; gospel from the land Father ruled by long division, young men they pretend Old men comprehend. And the 'SKY BREAKS' at dawn; shedding light upon this town They’ll all come ‘round Cause the man of the hour is taking his final bow Goodbye for now. And the road The old man paved The broken seams along the way The rusted signs, left just for me He was guiding me, love, his own way Now the man of the hour is taking his final bow As the curtain comes down I feel that this is just goodbye for now. http ://b last bab y.fil es. wor dpr ess .co m/2 010 /10 /go odb ye. jpg http://www.lyricsfreak.com/p/pearl+jam/man+of+the+hour_10203044.html The six selections cited in this quest for music have been carefully chosen for both their lyrics and melodies. They are meant to not only reveal, but illuminate the events and feelings of the story. It is intended that they whisk the viewer away to the time and place of the film, and make her feel like she is there. They will take the viewer on the quest. Deanna Smith LA 8 Freak the Mighty Song 7 listen after finishing novel Chapter 23 is titled "The Empty Book", and at this point in time the reader is aware that Kevin has been living a fantasy, but sparing Max the pain of his imminent death. Kevin's gift to Max is an empty book, ironic in the fact that all along Max has been honest with the reader about of reading and writing skills. In gifting Max so, it is Kevin's hope that their story will be told, and that because of that Max's life will be richer. Natasha Bedingfield's "Unwritten" speaks the same thoughts and also offers hope through the upbeat tempo and repetitious rythyms. This is the fifth selection of this compilation. "Unwritten" Natasha Bedingfield Make a List of Song Ideas for the End: I am unwritten, can't read my mind, I'm undefined I'm just beginning, the pen's in my hand, ending unplanned Staring at the blank page before you Open up the dirty window Let the sun illuminate the words that you could not find Reaching for something in the distance So close you can almost taste it Release your inhibitions Feel the rain on your skin No one else can feel it for you Only you can let it in No one else, no one else Can speak the words on your lips Drench yourself in words unspoken Live your life with arms wide open Today is where your book begins The rest is still unwritten Find the song and listen.
