When
Regional
and Local
Series Work
Together
Everyone
Wins
By Mike Schorn
I
was recently looking at the karting forums and I came
across the following opinion: “Biggest thing that is killing the regional program are promoters unwilling to stand
behind a series format.” I say that in general as I know
that there are few that would support it. It comes down to
money. Many promoters do not want to give up their entries
when the series goes to another track for a series race.
I felt this was a common issue and all kart regions struggle with the same or similar issues. I have experience in several different regions and feel that most regional programs
could be improved by taking a different approach to the
common issues. In the Pacific Northwest, the IKF Region 6/
NW Gold Cup/Rotax Max Series Annual Awards Banquet
weekend has also been holding a two day karting conference for the last 25 to 30 years to help resolve or eliminate
some of the common regional karting issues.
NW Gold Cup Member Clubs and Promoters have listened to their racers or customers and are trying to meet
the needs of all the local and regional racers by having
strong local and regional series. Most local race series are
based on the current Regional Series Competition Rules
and the local series typically includes the local regional
race as part of their local championship. This collaborative and cooperative approach has increased participation
in the regional series and provides the local racer with the
opportunity to test their skills against the region’s best
drivers without the added expense of traveling to other
race tracks. This common mind set has lead to a combined
regional series that has IKF, Rotax Max and SKUSA racers
10
all racing for the single regional championship in Oregon,
Washington, Idaho, Montana, and Canada. This has resulted in increased regional entry numbers that are equal or
better than has been seen in the past ten years.
Event scheduling is the most important issue that is
resolved by the karting conference each year so that a racer
does not have to choose one race track or series over another. All NW Gold Cup Member Clubs are allowed one NW
Gold Cup Sprint Event and are not allowed to schedule a
club or local race on the same weekend any NW Gold Cup
Sprint or Road Race Event.
Four years ago the NW Gold Cup Clubs agreed to listen
with an open mind to combining Rotax Max and SKUSA
series into the existing IKF race weekends. Many were very
apprehensive (including myself) of the whole venture, but
we all agreed to at least listen with an open mind.
The result of this meeting is that now the Northwest
kart racer has one larger regional series that consists of IKF,
Rotax Max and SKUSA race classes with a different track for
each event. There are one day classes and two day classes,
2-cycle and 4-cycle classes. Participation records are kept
for Rotax Max and SKUSA national races. The region has
a traveling race crew under contract that provides a race
director, tech crew, registration crew, grid crew and chief
flag person. The changes have provided the regional racer
with one single regional championship with fair and consistent race administration for the whole season at a different
race track each event.
We are now in the fourth year of this change and I am
happy to say that there has been growth each year since
the changes. Racers from our region regularly compete on
a national and international level with excellent results.
It all starts with our local clubs promoting a successful
regional program by working together to bring out the best
racing for the racer.
The IKF Policies and Procedures are generated as a
guide or aide for IKF Governors, Regional Coordinators,
Member Clubs and Race Promoters. This guide is to help
in establishing, planning and implementing a successful
regional series that has a consistent, fair and level playing field for all the karters, promoters and clubs. Regional
leaders and planners need to see beyond the immediate
short term gains or concerns and look on a broader scope
to see what is good for all of our racers or the growth of
clubs, race promoters and kart dealers. As we continue to
work to grow the regional programs, our local programs
will also grow and prosper.
2009 will be a challenge in several ways, mostly economically, but I have hope that we as karters, clubs, promoters
and dealers in a collaborative and cooperation approach rise
to the occasion and keep your region alive and well this year
and in years to come.
So the question is to our fellow karters, promoters and
clubs out there: “Are you willing to be open to changes or
open to ideas of change that will improve your sport, club,
region, or organization?”

KARTER NEWS - ApRil 2009
ith karts just barely cooled off
from the season finale the week
before, The colorado Junior
k
karting
club played host to this year's ikf4 regional championship series banquet
4a
on october 5th 2008. coined as the cJkc's
“
“year
end family celebration,” the event
was held for the second year at the denver dave & buster's restaurant and arcade.
w
with the average age of a cJkc participant
being about 9 years old, this popular location is a no-brainer. The biggest challenge of
the evening seemed to be just keeping them
in their seats through the awards presentation before they descended on the arcade
like ants at a picnic. Their enthusiasm is
understandable however considering that
each club participant and their siblings all
received a $20 game card along with their
buffet style dinner.
even with the huge arcade just outside
the door calling them by name, they were
all very attentive as the evening kicked off
with a 20 minute ““season highlights” slide
show put to some great music. The show
featured everything from on-track racing
shots to podium awards presentations and
candid photos that brought nonstop oohs,
aahs and chuckles from the packed house.
f
following the slideshow, dinner and cJkcikf decorated cakes for dessert; the evening
got down to business with a short ""state of
the club" address by cJkc president scott
h
hannum
followed by the many club patron
awards presented by cJkc vp and ikf
r
regional
Track coordinator Jay Jacobellis.
next, the club welcomed the evening's
guest speaker; 1996 indy 500 winner and
2000 irl series champion buddy lazier.
b
buddy
took to the microphone telling stories about his path to indy victory, a few
13
funny bumps along the way and many
encouraging words for those young drivers
dreaming of motorsports stardom. buddy
even brought his solid silver mini borgwarner trophy and his winner's diamond
ring and literally passed them around the
room from table to table giving everybody
a chance to hold what few people have
ever seen let alone touched with their own
hands. we can't thank buddy enough for
taking the time to spend the evening with
us and giving all the kids, (mostly the dads)
such a rare treat!
now all eyes focused on center stage
where a large black and white checkered
table was covered with year end awards
and flanked on each side by this year's class
champion karts. as each participant was
announced, a short personalized season
review was read while action photos and
candids were displayed on the huge 10' x
10' big screen behind the stage. each driver
was also given an opportunity speak to the
crowd giving may thanks to sponsors and
their parents for all the support.

special thanks also go to shockwave
karting of denver for helping to create
the amazing solid billet aluminum steering wheels which were then mounted to
solid granite pedestals and awarded to the
top three in each class. There where also
laser cut steering wheel awards given to
fourth through last place in both classes,
(nearly 30 awards in all) and of course
the ikf regional series champions jacket
was much appreciated, they don't know
whether to wear it, or frame it?
after the 2008 cJkc ikf-4a series championship podium positions were awarded,
the kids were released to invade the much
anticipated arcade while parents, sponsors
and relatives relaxed and reflected on the
many highlights of this 2008 season and
were already making comments like, “you
know what we should do next year...!”
The colorado Junior karting club
would like to thank all of their members,
patrons, member tracks, officials and the
ikf for an outstanding year of racing and
they look forward to making 2009 even
bigger and better!

King of the Streets changes to Spec Honda
at Rock Island Grand Prix. Rotax, Leopard classes added; junior class dropped
from race lineup.
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Organizers of the
Rock Island Grand Prix, the world’s largest
karting street race, have announced significant changes to the class lineup at this year’s
event, Sept. 5-6, 2009. Presenting sponsors of
the event are AT&T and Mazda. Other major
sponsors include Kart Expo International
and Jumer’s Casino & Hotel, Rock Island.
This year’s ninth running of the Superkarts!
USA King of the Streets race will feature the
Spec Honda power plant and follow SKUSA
rules. Touch and Go (TAG) class offerings
have also been expanded and there will be
no junior class in 2009.
“The decision to switch to stock moto (also
termed Spec Honda) was made jointly by
the Rock Island Grand Prix and Superkarts!
USA. We believe that the change will rejuvenate the King of the Streets event which
has historically been one of the most coveted titles in karting,” said Roger Ruthhart,
president of the Rock Island Grand Prix. “We
will still offer a venue to race ICC and tuned
motos, which have been the engines that
powered the King of the Streets race in the
past. But we believe at this point in time that
the new Spec Honda format will provide
bigger fields with closer and more exciting
racing for the thousands of spectators that
come to the Rock Island Grand Prix.”
King of the Streets will run at a weight of
395 pounds in an effort to attract both lighter and heavier drivers to the race, Ruthhart
said. If registrations exceed 40 entries, the
class could be divided and weights adjusted. This year’s winner will receive a $2,000
check, entries to the Superkarts! USA SuperNationals and the Florida Winter Tour January 2010 opening round, and a special Kart
Raiser Electric Kart.

LAS VEGAS, NV An evening of incredible
racing and friendly banter all to raise funds
for children was held last night, Thursday,
February 26, at Pole Position Raceway, 4175

Kurt Busch hosted the inaugural Sprint for
the Kids. The event raised more than $30,000

and his team with the winning title.
Participants in the Sprint for the Kids competed in an hour-long team endurance kart race
on Pole Position Racewayís indoor speedway.
Twelve teams total competed in the event.
Teams were paired with one NASCAR driver,
who acted as team captain. NASCAR drivers participating in the event included, Kurt
Busch, Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin, Sam Hornish Jr., David Stremme, Hermie Sadler, Kelly
Bires and Justin Algaier.
“The event was amazing,” said Kurt Busch.
“The racing was competitive and I was
happy to be a part of the winning team.”
The top three teams in the Sprint for the Kids
event are as follows:
1st place- Get Real Water

in philanthropic initiatives and has made significant contributions to many organizations
and charities, including the Victory Junction
Gang Camp, A.C.E. Charter School and The
West Side Recreational Program. On May 16,
2006, The Kurt Busch Foundation formed a
partnership with the Victory Junction Gang
Camp, beginning with an initial $1 million
dollar donation, which helped fund the Kurt
Busch Superdome that opened and was dedicated in 2008.
