Celebrating Bach and Mozart
In 1735/6, while he was in Leipzig, Bach wrote four short Masses which have come to be known as the
“Lutheran Masses,” so-called because they had only a Kyrie and a Gloria, the only two Latin liturgical
movements used in the Lutheran liturgy. The Bach Society was proud to present the Dayton premier of
one of these little-known, but wonderful works, the Mass in A Major.

We wound up our 2005-2006 season with a particularly upbeat program, ending with a touch of whimsy.

performance of John Rutter’s musical setting of the familiar fable, “The Wind in the Willows.”

Best of Brahms
This concert featured our community outreach project for the year, and a performance of a seldom-heard
version of Brahms German Requiem. The project combined the Bach Society chorus with four Dayton area
school chamber choirs in a presentation of selections from Brahms’ lovely (and lively!) Liebeslieder Waltzes. Each chorus performed individual selections from the Op 52 collection, and joined forces for a finale.
The so-called “London” version of the Requiem was less familiar - the arrangement for two pianos instead
of orchestra was made in Brahms own hand specifically for venues where orchestra was not available.

Motets and More
The centerpiece of this concert featured two of Bach’s six motets: BWV 228, possibly the first that he
wrote, and BWV 225, felt by many to be his most significant motet. As part of our continuing focus on
community outreach and in keeping with our goal to help encourage the next generation of choral singers,
selected Xenia High School students under their director, Brent Manley, will be integrated into the Bach
Society of Dayton Chorus for the motet performances, in an event called “Project Sing.”

A Celebration of Spring
In a refreshing change of pace, we presented a “mostly 20th Century” program of music, from the serious
to the joyous. The Vaughan Williams “Mass in G Minor” was a fitting capstone to our 6th season, and the
Dello Joio “A Jubilant Song” sent the audience out the door wanting to come back for more.

Our opening concert featured choral works from three of the world’s most famous organists, including
one with extraordinary talent but who is seldom heard today – Josef Rheinberger. This performance also
marked the return to Dayton of Peter Ciaschini, former concertmaster of the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, playing Rheinberger’s Suite for Violin and Organ.

The Art of the Magnificat
We presented music and art spanning several centuries in an exciting collaboration with the University of
Dayton Marian Library. This concert focused on the Annunciation and the Visitation of Mary mother of Jesus, through the combination of music and art in a multimedia production. The “Magnificats” of both J.S.
Bach and John Rutter were the musical showpieces, complemented by images from the Marian Library’s
extensive art collection projected on large screens in the sanctuary of the Kettering Adventist Church.

The opening concert of the season featured some of the pieces our audience and chorus identified as
their favorites. This included the magnificent Plaudite by Giovanni Gabrieli, who was all the rage in Venice
at the turn of the 16th century, as well as works by current choral “rock star” Eric Whitacre, creator of the
worldwide virtual choir. The centerpiece of the concert was a work based on ancient psalm texts by 20th
century American composer Norman Dello Joio, who won the Pulitzer Prize for music. The concert also
featured a commissioned arrangement by Steven Winteregg of Elgar’s Imperial March for brass and organ.

St. Matthew Passion
J.S. Bach’s moving portrayal of Christ’s last days is told through the words of the Gospel of St. Matthew
and heart-wrenchingly beautiful music. Considered one of the greatest works in western classical music,
Bach’s St. Matthew Passion was composed for double chorus, children’s choir, soloists, and double orchestra for a surround-sound musical experience. The work is believed to have been first performed on Good
Friday 1727 at the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig, Germany, where Bach was music director.

Mass in B Minor by J.S. Bach
J.S. Bach’s Mass in B minor weaves together some of his greatest pieces along with new, less familiar compositions. It is an established part of the choral repertoire but is also an enigmatic work. At what point
did Bach, a Lutheran Protestant, plan to write a full Roman Catholic Mass? Did Bach really intend the full
work to be performed on a single occasion? Although infrequently performed, the Mass in B minor has
long been considered a true masterpiece.

Celebrating Dance and Song
This concert was cutting-edge, creative, and also a true collaboration of two of the area’s quality performing arts groups: Bach Society of Dayton and Dayton Contemporary Dance Company (DCDC). The
collaboration began with a casual conversation between two individuals from each organization and grew
to a mutual commitment to choreograph modern dance to music drawn from the Bach Society’s normal
repertory.

From Leipzig to Vienna
The first concert of our 2014-15 season began with the The Mass in A Major, unusual for Bach in that it is
not a cantata or a passion but rather is a setting of the Ordinary of the Mass with a Latin text. The concert
continued with Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 4 in G Major and highlighted our superb instrumentalists, including violinist Aurelian Oprea. We also welcomed The University of Dayton Chorale to our stage,
first to sing excerpts from Bach’s Magnificat in D Major and then to join The Bach Society Chorus in Bach’s
Cantata 150. The concert closed with Schubert’s Mass in C with orchestra and soloists.

South American Accents
South American Accents concert marked a series of significant firsts for the Bach Society—a cultural collaboration with the Hispanic community in our area, major choral works sung in Spanish, and a connection
to the City of Dayton’s commitment as a welcoming community for immigrants from many regions of the
world, plus a significant collaboration with noted Dayton guitarist Jim McCutcheon. We sang sweet music
about love and the ending of the day, from a variety of geographical settings and languages.

Salute to American Masters
Salute to American Masters continued the momentum of Bach Society’s participation in American Mosaic, a Schuster Center gala affair which honored 50 years of service to the Dayton arts community of the
Miriam Rosenthal Foundation for the Arts. Salute to American Masters focused on music from our own
country: from Aaron Copland to Eric Whitacre, from William Dawson to Jonathan Bailey Holland, this concert brought something fresh and vibrant to the audience and welcomed Bach Society’s longtime friend,
renowned singer and choral director William Caldwell to the stage.

Songs of Mystery and Praise
This concert marked Bach Society’s first performance of the Fauré Requiem in our 13 year history and
offered works based on two of the texts most frequently set to classical sacred music: Mary’s Magnificat
from Luke 1:46-55, and the Requiem Mass. The composers span two centuries and distinctly different
styles—but both Bach’s and Fauré’s masterpieces inspire us with tonal and rhythmic beauty and spiritual
meaning.

The Music of Downton Abbey
This concert of instrumental and choral works took us back to the post-Edwardian era portrayed in Downton Abbey, which in the television series spanned the period 1912 to the dawning of 1926. Each piece in
this concert has a strong connection to England, with some of it composed in the decades just before or
following the death of King Edward VII in 1910. But we also reach back to G.F. Handel and T.A. Arne—writing nearly two centuries before—for music widely used in ceremonies to honor and remember
monarchs and to hail Britannia’s majesty.
