L
ife in Belgrade is the real
challenge for those who have
decided to spend part of their
lives in the Serbian capital.
Referring to this, one of our collocutors
in this magazine issue was the most
emotional - Dragan Kapicic, one-time
basketball ace and the actual President
of the Basketball Federation of Serbia.
Belgrade is also the city of secrets since
it has become a settlement a couple
of thousands years ago. Mysteries
are being revealed almost every day.
The remains of the Celtic, Roman,
Byzantine, and Turkish architectures
are entwined with the modern ones
that have been shaping Belgrade since
the end of the 19th century.
Secretive is also the strange world
of underground tunnels, caves and
shelters that we open to our readers.
Many kilometres of such hidden places
lie under the central city streets and
parks. They became accessible for
visitors only during the recent couple
of years.
Also, Belgrade has characteristic
bohemian past that is being preserved
in the traditions of restaurants and
cafes. This phenomenon of the first half
of the 19th century is picturesquely
presented in one of the texts we are
offering our readers.

ADA CIGANLIJA THE PEARL OF BELGRADE
Beach in the
Centre of

Sport, fun,
cafes, and boat
restaurants
make the
former Sava
River island
one of the
biggest
attractions in
this part of the
Balkans
C
itizens
of
Belgrade
dubbed Ada Ciganlija the
Belgrade Sea and that is
not so far away from the
mark. Ada has everything seaside
resorts have, including some six
kilometres long beach, water
sports, and possibility to have fun
in 70 cafes and restaurants. One
time island, just four kilometres
away from the centre of the city,
has become the great recreational
and amusement centre just 50
years ago when it was decided
to connect it with two isthmuses
with the mainland. That way the
part of the river has become the
lake and Ada available for visitors,
hundreds of thousands of them
during the long season, starting
from spring and ending with the
first days of autumn.
Today, beside the Kalemegdan
Fortress, Ada Ciganlija is the
biggest attraction of the Serbian
capital. In the summer time,
Ada Ciganlija daily has several
hundreds of thousands of people
who wander about numerous
sports courts, cycling-paths and
footpaths. Moreover, all of them
leave Ada happy and satisfied.
Swimming in the lake or rowing,
riding a bike, bungy jumping,
water skiing, volleyball, tennis,
basketball, fishing, golf, or just
sitting in one of the numerous
cafes make the magic of the
relaxed fun at Ada.
This oasis of nature also
lives during the night. Cafes
and restaurants, nearby boat
restaurants, lit footpaths and
mainly live music are the part of
the unusual ambience that lingers
long in everybody’s memories.
Those who prefer picnic and
family gatherings can use one of
the several barbecues located
in different spots and organize
their own party. What is equally
interesting and important is that

stay at Ada Ciganlija and use of
all the infrastructure is free of
charge. The fee has to be paid only
for sports courts and equipment.
Ada with its lake and nearby
smaller island Ada Medjica lies in
the area of about 800 hectares.
The lake is 4.2 kilometres long,
approximately 200 metres wide,
and its depth is from four to six
metres. Many rowing competitions
were held on this lake and according
to Mr. Predrag Petrovic, the
Director of the Public Enterprise
“Ada Ciganlija,“ famous Harvard
and Yale eight-oared shells will
compete on the Ada Lake this
autumn. Before that, the rowing
competition will be held within
this year’s Univerzijada. This is
going to be a great pleasure for
young sportsmen since the Sava
Lake is one of the five best rowing
and kayak lanes in the world.
Ada is equally acceptable
for solitary walks as well as for
sports fishing. Not far away from
the big lake the small one was
also made that is full of fish and
therefore gives an opportunity for
competitions or pleasure fishing.
Golf courts can be used by
both the beginners and the
experienced competitors. All the
baseball clubs that have been
founded in Belgrade during the
last decade are located at Ada.
Field hockey can also be played
here, and rugby, beach volleyball,
but the biggest interest remains
for the traditionally popular sports
in Belgrade – basketball, football,
and tennis.
At Ada Ciganlija there are
several dozens of registered
sports clubs that use 50 sports
courts, including the water sports
lanes. The biggest attractions are
some relatively new sports such
as climbing up the artificial cliff
or paint ball. Nevertheless, when
big European or world rowing
competitions are organized here
there are more spectators on the
stands and along the beach than
in the city stadiums at important
matches.
Ada Ciganlija is in the centre
of one of the biggest Belgrade

attractions. Those floating houses
started their life here some fifty
years ago as houses on water.
Their builders were the Belgrade
artists, intellectuals, but also
ordinary people who are in love
with the river. For decades they
were the source of inspiration for
painters and writers who were
socializing with fishermen and
strange Robinsones who lived
solitaire life at Ada, just a couple
of kilometres away from the city
throng. Today more famous are
boat restaurants as places fit for
nightlife. From places for family
gatherings, many of them turned
into restaurants and cafes, often
very luxurious ones, but still quite
intimate thanks to the regular
guests.
Ada is also connected with New
Belgrade. There are boats that
take passengers from one to the
other side of the river every ten
minutes. New Belgrade riverside
and the left Ada bank make
very picturesque amphitheatre
surrounded
with
the
boat
restaurants that are reflected in
the Sava River water during night.
There, with the sounds of music,
the time passes very quickly and
parties last until dawn.
Most precious thing that
Ada Ciganlija has is its natural
surroundings. Oak and elm forests,
American poplar and ash are the
habitat of various kinds of birds.
Once there were wild boars on this
island but now you can only come
across a doe or different kinds of
small forest animals. No matter how
urbanized and organized it is, Ada
has preserved the spirit of wildness
so that it is possible to explore wild
tracks in relatively small area and run
into unusually entwined vegetation
untouched by the human hand.
Ada Ciganlija is the pearl of
Belgrade. The city gives its best to
preserve it as an oasis of nature
and still to keep the spirit of joy,
relaxed atmosphere, pleasure, and
adventure. Therefore, this part of
the city has become the symbol of
Belgrade that everybody loves, the
reason to come to visit and revisit
the Serbian capital.

INTERVIEW – DRAGAN KAPICIC,
THE BASKETBALL LEGEND
My Country
Is Belgrade
I do not know a man who has visited our
city just once. All those who accidentally
or intentionally take a walk down its
streets and feel the spirit of its life feel
the need to come back
B
asketball is his alter ego.
During his long career he got
used to successes. For fifteen
seasons he wore the Crvena
Zvezda (Red Star) jersey as a member
of the team and generation that is still
being talked about in superlatives.
They were the champions of Yugoslavia,
winners of the national Cup, and
the European Cup of the Cups. Mr.
Dragan Kapicic’s scores that were also
precious in the Yugoslav national team
(162 matches, 1.391 point) where he
won seven gold medals at the biggest
international competitions supported
all the successes. The stock of valuable
trophies is completed with silver
and bronze medals acquired at the
European and world championships.
Press clippings from the last century
sixties and seventies prove that he
and his generation launched Yugoslav
basketball into the world jet set.
Even when he finished his career, he
remained under the baskets. As a sports
official his merits in making Crvena
Zvezda one recognizable and powerful
club are literally immeasurable. He
took part in the National Federation
work at various functions and two
months ago he became the first man of
the Serbian basketball – the President
of the Basketball Federation of Serbia.
He was unanimously elected – the fact
that is not the Balkans’ characteristic.

He has travelled the whole world,
seen unseen wonders, and had numerous
offers to prove himself as a basketball
player outside the borders of his
country. Many were surprised that he
never left, but he was not. Here is his
explanation:
“Belgrade is my city, my country. In
many things it maybe looks like other
megalopolises but, again, it is special,
and before all, it is unique, and not only
here, in the Balkans. One must admit,
though, that it has been seriously limited
thanks to its geopolitical location,
not only today but also probably since
its creation. Nevertheless, Belgrade
managed to create itself and its being
and become a city that everybody falls
in love with at the very first sight. It is
unbelievable, but I am positive many
envy us the fact that those who were
born in it and those who came to spend
a part of their lives in it equally love it.
Similar impressions also have occasional
guests of the Serbian capital. I do not
know a man who has visited our city
just once. All those who accidentally
or intentionally take a walk down its
streets and feel the spirit of its life feel
the need to come back.“
What makes your emotions for
Belgrade so strong?
“Belgrade is the megalopolis of
spirit. There is no place like Belgrade in
the whole world where you can inhale
freedom with full lungs, and of that I
am absolutely sure of that. This is the
only place where one is allowed to
express oneself and his or her values.
This particular distinctiveness singles
it out of the stereotype and enables
Belgrade to show it is not a salve to
any model or routine. Belgrade is the
European New York. This is the fact
we, who live here, have to be aware
of as well as those who come to visit it
since they know and point that out.“
You have a lot of friends all over
the world and many of them come to
Belgrade. What are the things that
you proudly show them?
“All that Belgrade is today and what
is its characteristic that everybody will
enjoy in – Belgrade is the city of cafes.
Those who come to Belgrade do know
that for sure and they want to see
what the whole world already knows
– the so-called Silicone Valley, i.e.,
Strahinjica Bana Street full of cafes. I
am very pleased when I see my friends,
foreign guests, overwhelmed with all
that beauty strolling up and down this
street and its cafes and moreover with
the way of life in that, as they say,
wonderful ambience. It is mandatory
for me to take them in a beautiful
restaurant at the Sava pier, ’Magacin.’
There they can see some other face
of Belgrade and its inhabitants in
different atmosphere characteristic
for that place. I save dessert for the
end – fascinating boat restaurants on
the Rivers Sava and Danube. Upon
seeing all this and becoming a part of
the whole crazy atmosphere and fun
it is absolutely natural they declare
and feel they would never ever leave
this city.“
What else do you use to fascinate
your guests on the Belgrade tour?
“Those are historic and natural
beauties of Belgrade that is bigger,
more beautiful, and richer from year
to year. It is nice I notice it since I live
here, but much nicer is that those who
come to Belgrade over and over again
are fully aware of that. The one who
comes to Kalemegdan feels the need
to revisit it. Fortunately, this centuries
old fortress is changing and being fixed
up but unfortunately, there are still
places that are not accessible. In fact,
in Kalis one can learn the history of
Belgrade. What I am proud of the most
is the truth that Belgrade is beautiful
per se, that all what the guests admire
and like is what the nature has given
it. There is no master builder in the
whole world who would be able to
present a sight that would be more
beautiful than the mouth of the
Rivers Sava and Danube or the scent
of the Tasmajdan Park. Some other or
many world cities, unlike Belgrade,
have to shape their places of interest
in order to loud themselves in front
of their guests. Through the time and
the way of life Belgrade has created
its natural monuments that leave no
one indifferent.“
You have walked through many
world metropolises. Comparing to
them – where is Belgrade?
“Belgrade does not have the
capacity of Paris or London or
some other European or world
metropolises. It also does not have
that financial richness or that
miraculous monumentality that are
the characteristics of Madrid or
Rome. In many things comparisons
are impossible, among other things,
because the Belgrade history is
completely different from the one that
has created today’s image of Vienna
or Prague. Through many centuries
Belgrade has been demolished,
destroyed, and maltreated many
times but it has always found a way to
revitalize itself. Therefore, today it
presents a kind of compilation of the
past and present, history and present
day and also the mirror of the truth
that it is possible to change, disfigure
or beautify everything except what
exists in a person. And thanks to the
people, Belgrade has been and still
is the city of the open heart. Paris
has incorporated its values through
centuries; Belgrade is the creator of
something new. There is something
with which Belgrade will always be
able to compete with other cities
and always be more successful – its
multidimensional characteristic of its
sphere of spirit.“
How big was the sport’s
contribution to Belgrade to become
the European centre?
“Enormous. Sport is the true
value of this city. In fact, it is very
important component that Belgrade
has incorporated in the quality of its
being. My basketball is generally the
first sport of this area – the pride of
Belgrade and Belgrade citizens. We
painstakingly struggled for that stand
and what makes us, belonging to the
basketball world, especially happy
and pleased is the fact that Belgrade
has recognized that value in the right
way. Basketball players paid back in
honourable way and that is why the
achieved results have the world value.
However, basketball players are not
the only pride of the sports Belgrade.
Serbian capital has also football club
that belongs to the society of the
chosen, the club that was once the
Continent and even the football planet
champion – its Crvena Zvezda whose
name is pronounced with respect in all
parts of the world. And not only Zvezda.
I would be unfair not to mention
successes of our handball, volleyball,
water-polo players, athletes, shooters,
tennis players, boxers, wrestlers…
Fortunately for Belgrade this list is very
long and there is not enough space to
mention all the world and European
champions, Olympic medal winners…
All of them, in fact, are the icons of
Belgrade.“
Who are the sportsmen who
impressed you the most?
“Those who had and maintained
something of their own through their
careers, something that singled them
out in their approach to sport and
play and those who pictured Belgrade
with their skill and within themselves.
I am talking about those who were
called charmers and bohemians by the
public and journalists. In water polo
it was marvelous Zoran Jankovic, in
football unique virtuoso and confirmed
young man Dragoslav Sekularac who
was admired by not only Belgrade
but also the whole football planet of
the last century sixties. In basketball?
One and only is Zoran Slavnic, current
selector of the Serbian national team.
His energy, charm, and basketball
ingenuity give the eternal mark to this
sport.“
How do you spend your leisure
time as a first man of the Serbian
basketball?
“I meditate. It was a joke. I have
many obligations especially since I
have been elected the President of the
Basketball Federation of Serbia. There
are many problems and their solutions
cannot be delayed. I work a lot and
there is little leisure time. No, I am
not complaining. I enjoy everything
I am working on and I love to hold
on to what I have as a goal. When
you organize your time well there is
always a couple of hours when you do
not think about your work. In order to
round it all and be satisfied there are
family and friends… “ Zoran Secerov

SPIRIT OF THE OLD BELGRADE
Myths of the
Kafana Life
Although kafanas were named after the
coffee, the real meaning lies in the mixture
of restaurant, pub, and fun till down with
music and endless humorous chats

elgrade – the city of the big
heart like many others and yet
distinctive in everything and
one certain thing our intention
is to talk about. We shall tell you the
story on the old Belgrade kafanas
– the ones that are no more although
still somewhere here as a part of our
mentality and specific spirit of the
capital. Some of them survived even
after a century and a half, many of
the new ones have picked up the spirit
of the old ones and this, altogether,
makes the unusual Serbian capital
colouring.
No one knows who has invented
kafanas. Nevertheless, the citizens of
Belgrade proudly point out they were
among the first in the world to have
rooms for pastime, meeting friends
and chat while drinking coffee. And
something else after coffee… All of
this, allegedly, was happening at the
famous Zerek, today’s Dorcol, one
of the oldest city parts outside the
Kalemegdan walls. Long before than
in the then powerful Constantinople
or some European metropolises like
London, Paris, Vienna or Madrid.
Maybe this miracle would have
never happened were the Turks (who
remained in these areas for 500 years)
not the masters of the then Belgrade.
In their records it is said that even
“in 1521 the coffee was served in
a Dorcol house.“ It was, in fact, the

first Belgrade kafana. In order to avoid
confusion: London got its kafanas
in today’s sense of the word only a
century and even more later – in 1652,
and Vienna in 1683, Leipzig 1694…
Greatest number of kafanas and
eating-houses Belgrade had at the end
of the 19th and at the beginning of
the 20th centuries. According to some
statistical data in that period, there
was one kafana per 50 citizens. At the
then Theatre Square (Republic Square
today) only there were 16 kafanas
and in the Poenkareva Street (today’s
Makedonska Street) 17 of 40 houses
had kafanas or eating-houses.
The life was going on in kafanas.
Under their roofs, governments were
toppled and the new ones were
formed, cheating, businesses and
arrangements were made, there was
joy and sorrow, tears were shed and
songs were composed and sung. It
was unthinkable to imagine kafanas
without actors, journalists, lawyers,
singers, and confused newcomers, and
especially without bohemians. Some of
them were frequented for their good
drinks and cuisine specialties and the
others for their owners or waiters and
waitresses and even for music and
songs.
The old Belgrade kafanas got
their names after the owner’s
name
or
surname
(“Ignjatova
pivnica“ (“Ignjat’s Pub“), “Jokiceva
kafana“(“Jokic’s Kafana“), “Lepa
Katarina“ (“Beautiful Catharine“),
“Trandafilovic,“
“Cvetko,“
“Aksentijeva basta“ (“Aksentije’s
Garden“)…), the part of the city
they were located in (Tekija, Cubura,
Hadzi Popovac, Dusanovac, Visnjicka
kasina…), and then everything got the
poetic tone (“Belo jagnje“ (“White
Lamb“), “Dva bela goluba“ (“Two
White Doves“), “Lep izgled“ (“Nice
Appearance“),
“Poslednji
gros“
(“The Last Penny“), “Zlatna ladja“
(“Golden Boat“), “Tri sesira“ (“Three
Hats“)…). Some of the names were
given after the class or occupations
(“Radnicka
kasina“
(“Workers’
Messroom“), “Kod petroldzije“ (“At
the Lantern Man’s“), “Oficirska
kasina“(“Officers’
Messroom“),
“Kovac“(“Blacksmith“)…) and others
were named after the cities (Valjevo,
Pariz, Moskva, Venecija…). Some
kafanas’ names included the tone of
the Belgrade’s unpredictable spirit
and thus were called “Pceto koje
laje“ (“The Barking Dog“), “Mesecina“
(“Moonlight“), “Burdelj“ (“Brothel“),
“Ostrvo svete Jelene“ (“St. Helen’s
Island“), “Veseli basamci“ (“Cheerful
Stairs“), “Kineski car“ (“Chinese
Emperor“), or just “?“.
Kafana with the question mark
was built in 1823 after the request of
Prince Milos Obrenovic, the Serbian
19th century ruler. As a protected city
building it has remained at the same
place until this day, by the Cathedral.
This was the source of the problem.
The original name “By the Cathedral“
did not please the consistory who
sued the owner. Unsuitable name was
replaced with the question mark.
In the part of Belgrade called
Savamala (in Turkish it means the part
of the city near the Sava River) there
was kafana named “Kod pocepanih
gaca“ (“At the Torn Panties’“). The
name had to be changed. This time
it was not the court that reacted
but the Serbian Queen Draga Masin
personally. The owner had no choice
than to rename it in “Tri kljuca“
(“Three Keys“). It was remembered
more after this incident than its
food and drinks. Unlike this, kafana
“Tri lista duvana“ (“Three Tobacco
Leaves“) that has been the Belgrade
proud for decades and located across
the present Serbian Assembly, was
famous for many things. It was pulled
down some twenty years ago in order
to give place to a new hotel. The
hotel has not yet been built but once
it is it will have to bear the hallmark
saying that was the place where the
first telephone conversation in Serbia
had been made – in 1833.
The telephone is also the part of
the history of the famous “Kolarac“,
kafana that was built at the Theatre
Square in 1857. It was destroyed during
the Germans’ bombing of Belgrade on
April 6th, 1941. It was the meeting
place of the big town most prominent
people. It was also remembered after
movies and the Writers’ Association
that were located under its roof.
Serbian historians mention it as a place
at which assassinations on king were
devised but undoubtedly, the most
bizarre event was the Singing Society
Stankovic’s concert broadcast over the
phone that happened in 1896. At the
other side of the line in the town of Nis,
some 200 kilometres south of Belgrade,
the local “Branko Krsmanovic“ quire
responded with a song.
In “Kod zlatnog krsta“ (“At the
Golden Cross“) kafana, at the main city
square that is still called Terazije, the
first movie was released in June 1896,
just five months after Paris had seen
it. Moving pictures attracted even the
King Alexander who personally came
accompanied by his mother Natalija.
One of the historical records
reminds us that in the famous Terazije
kafana “Kasina“ the Serbian National
Assembly was in session in 1918. It is
also said that the 19th century Serbian
absolute ruler Prince Milos Obrenovic
used to come, all by himself, to kafana
“Varos kapija“ (“Town’s Gates“) where
he had his table and a cup of coffee,
glass of lemonade and some honey and
Turkish delight waiting for him every
morning. The picture of that Belgrade

was also preserved in “Grcka kraljica“
(“The Greek Queen“), kafana that
was built at the end of Knez Mihailova
Street, in the vicinity of the Kalemegdan
Park, in 1835. This building still exists
and inside its walls it still cherishes the
restaurant as prestigious as it used to
be in the old times.
At the Theatre Square, today’s
Republic Square, there was maybe the
most famous Belgrade kafana in the
19th century. It was the unforgettable
“Dardaneli.“ According to some
records, it was opened in 1855 and
immediately became the meeting
place of respectable men – merchants,
large estate owners, lawyers, writers,
actors, painters. It was torn down in
1901. At the “farewell party“ present
were the most prominent gusts,
gentlemen with top hats and hats.
Everything was “washed down“ with
the farewell speech delivered by the
most famous Serbian actor of the time
- Cica Ilija Stanojevic.
After that, the same company
moved from the Theatre Square to the
Skadarska Street that is now unofficially
called Skadarlija. This street, with
its kafanas and well-preserved
cobblestones and design that reminds
of Belgrade as it used to be at the end
of the 19th and the beginning of the
20th centuries, still serves as a kind of
a tourist oasis. Skadarlija kafanas offer
selected traditional food and especially
grilled dishes. All this is accompanied

with the old town music. Most famous
kafana is “Tri sesira“ (“Three Hats“)
dating back in 1864. The name comes
from the near-by hat workshop owned
by Mr. Dinic. The Skadarlija kafana
“Dva jelena“ (“Two Deer“) has been
frequented by the guests from all over
the world. In 1971, when the Belgrade
Film Festival (FEST) was founded, “Dva
jelena“ proudly hosted Robert De Niro,
Jack Nicholson, Vittorio de Sica, and
many other film stars of the seventies.
In the Belgrade kafanas’ mythology
unavoidable is also “Vardar“ kafana
where Mijat Mijatovic, the most
famous singer of that time, sang in the
first half of the last century. He was
both a singer and well-known Belgrade
lawyer. According to one urban legend,
one night he fascinated with his voice
even a group of the Serbian ministers
and the Serbian Patriarch Varnava.
Thanks to this, he was awarded the big
sum of money. Already the next day
that money was given for charitable
purposes since Mijatovic sang for
pleasure and never for money.
Some of the old kafanas are
preserved. “Srpska kruna“ (“The
Serbian Crown“) has the plaque as a
proof it was built in 1872. It was one of
the elite kafanas with the European
cuisine, service and clientele. In
the Belgrade sport history it has
been registered as a place where
the Belgrade Association for Physical
Exercise and Wrestling was founded
in 1881. Today it houses the Library
of the City of Belgrade. Kafana
“Gospodarska mehana“, still at the
same place, was built at the mouth
of the Topcider river and the Sava
River, at the Ada Ciganlija. With
everything it offered, it was the
attraction for the Belgraders as well
as for the Belgrade guests since it
could be reached by the tram, the
first one in this part of Europe.
Few people know that the Zeleni
venac, today’s market place with
recognizable roof made of red and
white squares, was named after
a kafana. The credit goes to Frau
Herman who in 1838 left native
Germany intended to open the hat
workshop in the Serbian capital.
Unfortunately, during the long and
tiring journey, her husband suddenly
died and upon coming to Belgrade she
rented a house from Mr. Aleksandar
Simic, minister and politician, and
opened a kafana. She named it
“Zeleni venac“ . The kafana has
long gone but the name Zeleni venac
remained for the part of Belgrade
overlooking New Belgrade.
It has been recounted that one day
some Gipsy, coming from a captivity
in Hungary with his violin, burst into
the kafana “Zadruga“, located at
the Slavija Square between the two
wars. Upon his death, the violin was
sold to the kafana owner. And that
is the moment the drama started.
Ferenc Atanu, famous Hungarian
violinist, accidentally came to
“Zadruga“ for lunch and spotted the
violin. The owner did not hesitate
long before he decided to sell it for
a hefty offer since it had been just
a decoration for him. After that, the
Hungarian went to Vienna and learned
he was the owner of the instrument
made in the world most famous
workshop. In the Belgrade kafana he
bought the Stradivarius violin, the
one that made him earn enormous
amount of money! This was heard
also in Belgrade and newspapers in
both Vienna and Belgrade wrote on
this unusual event. Even the court
got involved but with no result for
the unhappy kafana owner who had
not been aware that his decoration
on the wall was worth more than the
whole kafana.
These are just some of the stories
from a number of the Belgrade kafanas
that are linked to the period until the
Second World War. They were also
called “the second house“ of many
Belgraders. Nevertheless, kafanas are
still adornments of the Serbian capital
and its biggest tourist attraction. Relaxed
entertainment, music, good food and
almost unlimited working hours attract
tourists from all over the world, as it was
the case hundred years ago. Moreover,
the one who has not experienced
Serbian capital nightlife in traditional
and even modern kafanas, boat
restaurants and cafes has never come
to know Belgrade.

FAMILY FIRM “MASLACAK“
Pirates and Princesses
N
othing makes children and
their parents more joyful than
a fancy-dress ball. Birthday
or any other celebration will
always be remembered if guests are
disguised as pirates, cowboys, clowns,
mysterious dames, princesses… This
joy is the reason the costume designer
Mr. Aleksandar Vasovic funded the
small family firm that rents costumes.
Parents’ imagination and skillful
costume making are confirmed. You
can pick up the character in the
“Maslacak“ (Dandelion) shop and the
jamboree can begin.
Vasovic says everything has
started when the English music school
“Rainbow“ in Belgrade engaged him
to make costume for their fancydress ball. Afterwards the Vasovics
made disguises and costumes for their
children and were praised for their
skill. Consequently, it became their
family profession.
Their goal is to see a child happy
after selecting a costume or a mask and
even becoming a winner at the school
fancy-dress ball. It is understandable
that children’s and parents’ creativity
is always present. They can choose a
ready-made costume in “Maslacak“
but also it is possible to imagine
something special and original that
will immediately be realized by the
Vasovics.
The offer is diverse. Disguises
and costumes can be rented, bought,
and invented. In case parents are not
able to come for any possible reason,
“Maslacak“ will come to their home.
However, experience tells the Vasovics
that disguise is not enough for the
merriment to be complete. That is why
they are willing to organize the whole
event and entertain children.
Renting prices are not enormous
– 700 dinars a day (24 hours) for a
costume. It is also possible to arrange
renting for several days.
“Maslacak“ has one more surprise.
The firm was founded for the sake of
children but it has also turned towards
the grown-ups. There you can find
costumes for the businesspersons’
gwatherings and company celebrations.
Shootings of such occasions were used
in marketing campaigns.
The Vasovics have found the
formulae for connecting personal
pleasure in creating something new
with the pleasure of their clients.
Therefore the small family firm could
very much be called “Happy.“

he endeavour to turn one part
of Belgrade’s Tax Free Zone
near the Danube, in Francuska
street no 52, into an Ali Baba’s
cave with delicacies was exceptionally
well received. Everything was new,
and yet so familiar, like a scene from
a summer holiday. The interior is even
today an essential feature of every Porto
restaurant. Within short time, Porto
became a favourite both among students
and diplomatic corps, businessmen and
artists, among all those who enjoy their
meals as true hedonists would. And they
want it to be plentiful. The rest is a story
about a very balanced development

Restaurants in Moscow, St. Petersburg,
Rome, are just a confirmation that Porto

fine catch from the sea knows. At the
most prominent place in the restaurant,
near the kitchen, glittering on the
ice, it lies exposed to our view, as if it
hadn’t been only yesterday the part of
an endless blue of Ionian, Adriatic or
Tyrrhenian Sea.
The main characteristic of Porto
restaurants is that there is an everyday
menu and the daily menu which depends
on the catch and your wishes. Fish and
marine delicacies are displayed as
one gastronomic gallery. The choice is
yours. You decide both on the size of
the portion and the way in which it is
to be prepared. Fish and all shell fish
can be ordered in portions of 100gr or
in quantities you are in the mood for.
This makes us unique. Restaurant Porto
Belgrade, after being fully redecorated,
was opened on February 9th 2004.
It possesses the old well-known
atmosphere, but with new fine upgrades
such as lighting, interior and the offer.
The kitchen is also new, completely
renovated and optimised to fulfil the
demands of numerous guests during
the day. After more than a year lasting
renovation of the pool, the langoustes
again occupy the restaurant aquarium
and part of the attractive off er on our
guests’ tables. As regards the wine card
we especially point out extraordinary
Italian wines at the prices one fi nds
hard to resist. In Belgrade some of these
wines you can only taste in Porto. The
novelty is that the guests sitting in
the lower part of the restaurant, on
famous and traditional Porto benches
get a 10% discount. That in Porto you
can have the best espresso in town is
no news for our regular customers. For
others and for those who come for the
first time it is just another reason to
come again.
GASTRONOMIC CHALLENGES
Thrilling Road of Delight
One of the main trumps of the famous Belgrade
restaurant “Madera“ is the Chef Valter Pergiovanni,
the Roman who fell in love with Belgrade
S
ince 2002, “Madera“ has turned
the new page in its long history
of the prestigious Belgrade
restaurant. One time meeting
place of the well-known sportsmen
and artists, after renovation and new
design still attracts people who have
frequented it for many years. Yet, many
things have changed – the space is nicer
and bigger for 570 square metres and
service and specialties offer are like in
any other European metropolis.
We have talked about all this
with the Restaurant Manager or, as
we like to say in Serbia, the host. Mr.
Nebojsa Dapcevic used to come to
“Madera“ as a secondary schoolboy.
As a professional, after the renovation,
he has taken over great obligations. He
has long and great experience acquired
while working in Belgium as a restaurant
keeper for 18 years. Now “Madera“
poses a life challenge for him. His
aim is to make it one of the most
respectable places in the city and
he has already realized great deal of
his goal.
“Those who have spent many years
in ’Madera’ came to see us even in the
course of renovation. One of them was
the great Serbian actor Ljuba Tadic
who used to sit on the beer crates wile
drinking coffee. When everything had
been completed, he brought us many
old guests. In addition, our fellowcountryman Mr. Dan Tana, who owns
one of the most famous restaurants in
Hollywood, helped us with his advices,“
recalls our collocutor.
Now “Madera’s“ guests are
members of foreign embassies, national
chambers of economy, bankers and
businessmen, but the staff traditionally
take special care of their old guests.
One of this restaurant’s main
trumps is Mr. Valter Pergiovanni
who has arrived from Belgium at Mr.
Dapcevic’s invitation. Mr. Pergiovanni is
the Roman, the member of the Italian
Chefs Federation and its approved
representative in Serbia. His task is to
both make “Madera“ the restaurant
of the world-class and educate the
Serbian cooks. He has told us that
both the staff and the guests learn
at the same time, thus approaching
the world trends in quality service
and gastronomic experience diversity.
Therefore, “Madera’s“ menu is full of
the international cuisine specialties as
well as the dishes that are favoured
among the local guests. There one can
find traditional Serbian dishes and yet
rich salads, pastas, specialties such as
red tuna and high-quality fresh-water
and sea fish, desserts the Italians are
famous for and unavoidable quality
wines from all over the world and the
best local ones.
Quality is something that the
“Madera“ staff insists on and therefore
they make their own bread and cakes.
Having all this in mind, insists Mr.
Dapcevic, the diet culture has been
taken up to the higher level. Now the
point is not to have the plate full but to
make it a visual pleasure. That is why
it is suggested to all the “Madera’s“
guests to travel the thrilling road of
delight – starting from appetizers all
the way down to desserts.

the Museum of African Art is
the only museum in the country
dedicated entirely to the culture and
arts of the African continent.

After many years of accumulating
pieces of art throught West Africa,
Veda and Zdravko Pecar formed an
extraordinary collection, which they
donated to the City of Belgrade. Under
patronage of the local authorities, the
Museum of African Art was established
in 1977. The museum building was
specialy constructed to host the
Pecar collection, and is designed
so as to blend into the surrounding
environment.
The museum axhibits are sorted
into subcollections by material and
geographic criteria. They belong to
artistic traditions of the Bamana,
Dogon, Kissi, Baga, Marka, Malinka,
Bobo, Dan, Gere, Gouro, Senufo,
Ashanti, Ewe, Baule, Fon, Yoruba,
Bamileke. Aside from numerous
masks and wooden sculptures,
considered as classic examples of
west African art, the permanent
display comprises other objects
for cult and everyday use, magical
or decorative purpose in wood,

textile etc.

TRAVELLING THROUGH THE PAST
Secrets of the
Underground
Belgrade
Starting from the prehistoric times until the 20th
century tens of kilometres of underground passages,
dungeons, and cave shelters lie under the main
streets and squares of the Serbian capital
D
o you know you can have
a walk under Belgrade?
Few Belgraders are aware
of the fact there is some
other, underground Belgrade lying
under their city.
“Belgrade is one of those cities
where nature and history joined
together and created exciting
underground
topography,“
explains Dr. Vidoje Golubovic,
co-author of the book “Belgrade

under Belgrade.“ “This city is located
on the top of the ending ridge of the
Sumadija geological bar where the
region merges with the disappeared
Pannonian Sea and the cliff-like ridge
sporadically goes down to the rivers
Sava and Danube. The nature itself
started to dig, undermine, and drill
this natural bulwark, and after that,
people followed with their traces
that were left in the underground of
today’s Serbian capital. Among other
things, this underground preserved
the remains of the first inhabitant
of
Belgrade,
diluvial
Belgrade
Danube man - Homo Primigenius
Belgradensis.“
Appropriate maps will be of great
help in dealing with toponyms and
street names for those coming for
the first time to the Serbian capital.
Therefore, let us start our trip down
the underground Belgrade through this
text and with the map in our hands.
One of the Belgrade old
times secret is the Roman Well
in Kalemegdan Park. An amazing
structure that was and still is
fascinating. One time Belgrade guest
Alfred Hitchcock admired it and was
sorry there had not been a chance for
him to make it a background for one
of his exciting films. No one exactly
knows who has been the creator of
the Roman Well but many things
indicate that the Romans, who were
the rulers of the town during the first
several centuries, dug it at the place
it still exists. Not accidentally, they
had their fortress, their castrum, in
Kalemegdan. They made kilometres
long water supply line, from today’s
suburb Mali Mokri Lug to the very
Castrum. In case they were attacked,
in order to avoid thirst, they dug the
well. The reason being, undoubtedly,
the strategic one. The Austrians,
who conquered Belgrade in 1717,
followed the same logic. At the same
place, allegedly, they started to
widen and reconstruct the existing
well. In 1731, the Well got its today’s
outline. According to some sources,
the name “Roman“ remained, before
all, thanks to the Austrian aspiration
to become the new Roman Empire.
In order to reach the surface of
the water, that is tens of metres under
the ground, you have to go down 212
stairs. The staircase consists of two
spiral passageways – one for going
down and the other for climbing up
– that are enveloped and entwisted
down the well cylinder. They are
both wide enough for people and,
as the story goes, even mules and
horses who loaded with barrels
carried the water up to the surface.
Although it has existed for centuries
at the same place, the Well poses a
mystery. First, it is not known where
the water comes from. Further more,
there is an unsolved and unexplained
phenomenon - when the Sava River
water level rises, the well water
level falls, and vice versa.
There is a wonderful legend
associated with the Roman Well.
A corridor under the River Sava,
allegedly, connects it with the Zemun
millennium Janko Sibinjanin Tower.
This possibility is supported with the
underground hallways and dungeons,
Zemun abounds with, that have
been discovered during the Tower
reconstruction as well as some yet
unrevealed passageways in the Well.
Still, there is no proof for this all.
It looks like the Austrians
deserve all the credit for the
Belgrade underground city. For the
benefit of the military doctrine,
they were connecting all the
important structures by underground
passageways. In the end this was
all welcome by the Germans during
the Second World War since they
came to the Serbian capital armed
with the precise drawings of the
Belgrade
“underground.“
There
are still witnesses who can certify
how enthusiastically the SS experts
were trying to solve a riddle of the
cellar in today’s 10, Cara Dusana
Street. Back in 1727, the Belgrade
German Elias Fleishman built seven
identical houses in a row and among
them this one. In the vicinity there

was the German Command, the
building that no longer exists. On
the top of the ridge the Austrians
had big cavalry barracks. Having
in mind all this was very close to
Kalemegdan there is no doubt the
Belgrade conquerors connected
all these facilities by underground
hallways.
Kalemegdan
is
the
place
where a lot can be learned about
the Belgrade history. Walking
under
Kalemegdan
somebody
picturesquely called “touching
the beat of the deceased.“ This
insinuates to the Kalemegdan
builders who are long gone as well
as to those who ended their lives in
this miraculous fortress’ casemates.
In Barutana (powder-mill that
is a restaurant now) preserved
are the Singidunum tombstones
some two millenniums old. The
names of the deceased and the
last messages can be clearly seen
chiseled in the stones placed in
the lapidarium. The sarcophaguses

made of the Tasmajdan stone are
empty and represent the part of
the restaurant’s interior design.
In the Kalemegdan Lower Town
there is the powder storehouse
Pecine. There the Turks kept the
powder and when the Austrians
conquered Belgrade in 1717, the
powder warehouse exploded and
damaged this part of Kalemegdan. It
took three years for the Austrians to
reconstruct it and even today their
skill can be seen since the whole area
is carved into the rock. It consists of
the hallway 41 metre long and 2.7
metres wide. There are also two caves
– 19.5 by 17.5 metres and 17.4 by
17.2 metres respectively. Vaults are
some five metres high and the width
of the walls is between four and five
metres.
In the immediate vicinity of both
the Stambol Gate and the Clock
Tower there are eight underground
rooms. Those furthermost from the
entrance to this part of the fortress
are elongated so that their additional
chambers poach deeply into the side
bulwarks and on one side surround
basketball ground while on the other
they encompass the very base of the
Military Museum. They are worth
seeing.
One of the most attractive
underground Belgrade locations is
the famous park settled in the very
hart of the city. The name Tasmajdan
dates back from the time of the
Turks (tas = stone; majdan = mine).
It is also interesting for geologists
who claim Tasmajdan was the last
rising ground in the string from the
Carpathian Mountains to Belgrade
and the last shore that was splashed
by the pristine Pannonian Sea. The
Tasmajdan stone was used for building
houses, palaces, temples, and old
Roman culture structures. And this
is not all. Several metres under the
ground there is what has remained
of the two-millennium old water
supply line that brought water to the
Roman fortification in Kalemegdan.
Those who enter this a bit secretive
world will also perceive the Roman
tombs two thousand years old. In the
Tasmajdan “charnel“ there are church
treasures and crypts accompanied by
proofs that the underground of the
well-known park was the headquarters
of the Wehrmacht during the Second
World War. Tasmajdan was also the
saltpeter mine, thanks to what caves
still exist. In the Tasmajdan caves
was the home base of the 1804 First
Serbian Uprising leader Karadjordje.
His uprisings commenced from that
spot aiming to liberate Belgrade after
several centuries of the Turkish rule.
What can be found under
Kosancicev
Venac?
There
are
entrances into 13 big dungeons
coming from the Karadjordjeva Street
alone. It is not known how old they
are. During the wars they served as
shelters, and afterwards they were
used for other purposes, mainly as
cellars for big barrels of wine. In
the biggest dungeon, at the number
17, there is still the barrel with the
engraving dating from 1921 that is
not the only one preserved. There are
16 more that artisans had to make in
dungeons since they are much bigger
than the entrances. Long time ago
there was Djumurkana (customs) in
Karadjordjeva Street and that is the
reason these dungeons were absolutely
built on purpose.
One of the most attractive Belgrade
caves is situated at the beginning
of the Pariska Street where the
“Andergraund“ club is located, in the
area of some 500 square metres dug
into the rock. During renovation some
seven million years old shell fossils from
the Pannonian Sea were found and now
they are part of the club’s permanent
exhibition. In the gallery vault there
are frightening wedges sticking out
of the stone. It is supposed this space
was once the Turkish prison where the
inmates were tortured. Nevertheless,
the most mystic “Andergraund“ area
is the one behind the storehouse
that can be entered through the one
metre diameter whole leading to
two hallways: one going towards the
French Embassy and the other to the
Victor Monument in Kalemegdan.
There are many more underground
hallways, dungeons, and caves that
we know about very little and that are
still hidden. It is a pity since equally
interesting are those on Zvezdara
and Cukaricka Padina. Not less
intriguing are dungeons and passages
in Visnjicka Banja, the settlement at
the River Danube bank. Attractive
are also the underground areas in
Skadarlija that could be converted
into pubs that could accommodate at

Animal Kingdom
from the Garden
of Good Hope
Belgrade Zoo is a unique entity from an urban and
architectural point of view, located in a busy city centre
as if it were an oasis of peace and relaxation

he Zoological Garden is
situated in the Kalemegdan
Park, more precisely in the
part of the Belgrade Fortress,
the most important cultural-historical
monument of Belgrade.
The fortress was erected by the
Romans on the Celtic dugouts, and
torn down and rebuilt by the Huns,
Serbs, Hungarians, Turks, and all
the other peoples who fought over
Serbian capital. Sébastien Le Prestre
de Vauban later known as Marquis de
Vauban, one of the greatest military
engineers, gave it its final appearance
after 1717, when the Austrians
occupied Belgrade.
As time went by, the Belgrade
Fortress was gradually turning into
a museum and park with walkways,
its walls accommodating various
institutions, and the Zoo among
them.
The Belgrade Zoological Garden
was founded in 1936 by the then
mayor, an industrialist, Mr. Vlada Ilic.
It was officially opened on St Peter’s
Day, July 12.
When it was formed, the Zoo
covered a surface of some 3.5
hectares, to be rapidly expanded to
seven, and then, after the building of
the “Kalemegdan Terrace” Restaurant
and annexation of part of the Lower
City, to somewhat over fourteen
hectares, on which it saw the Second
World War. However, during the Second
World War, the Garden was bombed
twice: first in 1941 by the German
fascists, and then by the Allies in
1944. Almost the whole animal stock
was destroyed. Due to the demolition
and drastically reduced number of
exhibits, after the war the Garden’s
surface unfortunately dwindled to
some seven hectares which it still
occupies.
Since May 1, 1986 Mr. Vuk Bojovic
has been the Manager of the Belgrade
Zoo Garden. He found this institution
in a rather bad state. The animal stock
was more than scarce, with only sixty
animals, including birds. The facilities
and cages were in bad shape, ruined
and useless. Neglected paths and
green surfaces overgrown with weeds
were ominously spelling the end.
Despite the years of crisis and great
problems, the Garden has managed
to survive. Determination and hard
work have given results. The Belgrade
Zoological Garden has become one of
the best arranged parts of Belgrade, a
real oasis of beauty amidst a great city.
According to a research conducted
by the Global Mark Business Research,
Belgrade Zoo is on the list of the most
successful companies in Serbia in 2004.
Judging by its profitability and credibility
the Zoo is the first in its field, 23rd
among its competitors judging by the
size and takes the extraordinary 81st
place in the economy of Serbia. There
are bigger and more spacious zoos with
more animal species but only Belgrade
Zoo is a unique entity from an urban and
architectural point of view, located in a
busy city centre as if it were an oasis
of peace and relaxation. It is located at
the Kalemegdan Fortress. Today, seven
decades after Belgrade Zoo was set up,
it is a renowned and modern institution
which worthily represents the city of
Belgrade and the country to the whole
world. It covers an area of nearly 7
hectares.
The animals of the zoo are
numerous and various. There are
more than 2,100 animals representing
272 animal species. More than 120
of the species are protected by
the International Convention on
Endangered Species ratified by Serbia.
In 1989 Beo Zoo Vrt was visited by the
record number of 1 million people.
Since the country is not as big as it used
to be, the number of visitors in the last
few years was 250,000 to 300,000. The
zoo is a popular destination for tourists,
student excursions, the residents, etc.
’Our objective is to make the
Belgrade Zoo a scientific and research
centre for the students of the Faculty
of Veterinary Medicine,’ says Vuk
Bojovic, the Director of the Zoo.
Belgrade Zoo is open every day
from eight a.m. to dusk. The Belgrade
Zoological Garden works all 365 days
of the year.

“Kumbara“ – the house of good
hosts. One and only in Belgrade and
not only there. Mysterious, unique and
original in many ways. And before all
- miraculous. In this authentic Serbian
national restaurant’s guest book one of
the guests wrote: “It’s not easy for me to
decide which of my senses felt the best
– eyesight, hearing or taste.“
“Kumbara“
also
presents
an
adventure. One cannot reach it by
train, but the train is already there - as
a national specialty, the Leskovac one,
small or big, depending on your choice
and - on the plate. Grilled meat made by
a grand master during the ritual that can
real people. You make it out of minced
shoulder- joint meat, bull’s neck, and
the finest meat parts. When you knead
it well, put it on ice, for the night. In
the morning, grind it once again. When
the meat grows - throw it on the fire.
The charcoal must be from a mountain.
The hostess must be beautiful. The host
must be no fool. When this is arranged,
the cevap jumps right at you, into your
plate. Cevaps like that are made only in
Leskovac and in Kumbara.
Therefore, you do not have to go to
Leskovac. It’s too far away, at the south of
Serbia. It would be more appropriate and
easier to come to “Kumbara“ and – enjoy!
This restaurant is located at the
junction of roads that take you out of
Belgrade. To be more precise, it is on the
winding road at the foot of the Mount

consists of three cevaps, pljeskavica
and vesalica. The big one – five cevaps,
pljeskavica, vesalica, liver, sausage,
ustipak... This meal recipe is also unique
and goes like this:
If you don’t take pleasure in eating,
don’t touch cevaps. Cevaps are for
Avala, just 15 kilometres away from
Belgrade. It can be seen from far away
– the Serbian house at the left side of the
road architectonically nested within its
surroundings, in the greenery. They say
that once there was a Turkish inn and after
it, a century ago, famous kafana called
“Lep izgled.“
For more than thirty years “Kumbara“
stays at this place. It has joined together
traditional hospitality of Serbian hosts
and unique culinary skill. Therefore you
do not come to “Kumbara“ accidentally
but absolutely on purpose! Among those
guests who have come to “Kumbara“
once and wanted to revisit it was the
German ex chancellor Willie Brandt.
McNamara had that pleasure more than
once. The same stands for chess masters,
world champions Boris Spaski and Antoly
Karpov. The guest book also contains
praising words written by the basketball
NBA stars Vlade Divac and Zarko Paspalj,
among the others. “Kumbara“ is the oasis
of the world guests.
Several times “Kumbara“ has
deserved to be declared the Belgrade
restaurant of the year. Nevertheless,
not without reason, the hosts are most
proud of the acknowledgement they have
received in the Italian town of Stresa – Il
cuoco d’oro (Golden European cook that
has been traditionally given for decades
for the quality national cuisine).
