President’s Message
I
’m not great at the
contemplative life.
I’ve been told I need
to take time just “to be.” To be what? I feel like I
be quite a lot already. In between doing things,
I often be. In fact, I can be and play horseshoes
at the same time. I haven’t quite got down when
I’m in full be mode and when I’m just be-minus,
so to speak. And that brings me to a quote I’ve
never quite grasped: “To be or not to be? That
is the question.” No, it isn’t. The question is, “To
cut the grass or not to cut the grass?”
I jest. We all need contemplative time, and I
more than most. We need to slow down enough
to hear God, who sometimes whispers. We
need to slow down enough to listen to those we
love. We need to slow down enough to listen
to those we don’t love. We need to slow down
enough to listen to our own souls. If Jesus
needed to take time to be alone to pray (Matt.
14:23), how much more do we need to do the
same thing?
But I love action! And our actions become
hollow if we don’t replenish our souls. So
many good things happen when we get in the
game. We learn and we teach; we contribute
and we gain. I met Bryan Stevenson 15 years
ago, shortly after he graduated from Harvard
Law School. While at Harvard, he worked with
an organization in Atlanta that represented
death-row prisoners. Seeing injustice, he acted.
Upon graduation, he turned down countless
lucrative opportunities from elite law firms and
went to work for some of those disgracefully
underrepresented inmates. Recently, Prism
magazine asked him how his faith influenced
him. “For me, faith has to be connected to works
– you have to do something with what you
believe,” he said. Believing in the redemption of
Christ, Bryan acts upon it.
This report profiles just a few of Whitworth’s
many “doers.” United by a hungry productivity
gene, they demand even more of themselves
than we require. The four profiled groups
give more to others than anyone requires. As
athletes, actors, scholars and rescuers, they
plunge into the non-mandatory laboratory of
action. They lift our spirits as they grow.
It’s true. We can get overprogrammed with
activities and neglect our interior lives. That’s why
we offer you – in addition to Whitworth’s notable
2005-06 numbers, a rundown of exciting events
from the past year, and lists of big-hearted
donors – stories of some of the Whitworthians
who produce returns on the immense generosity
of all of you to whom we pay tribute and express
our gratitude in this report.

Record enrollment and continued strong support from

donors contributed to solid revenue growth in Fiscal
Year 2006. Rising enrollments also drove up most
18%
expense categories, particularly instruction and academic
support. However, effective budget management and
increased revenue from unprecedented 98 percent fall-to-spring
freshman retention resulted in a $1.2 million operating surplus that was reserved for
investment in residence-hall renovations, library and chapel upgrades and numerous
other improvements to the campus and grounds.

depreciation, but relies on surplus operating funds and donor gifts to upgrade and replace capital investments.

Strong investment returns and restricted gifts – including a pledge
of more than $1 million from William and Peggy Welch for the
Bruner-Welch Endowed Chair in Theology and a $1 million
planned gift from a member of the board of trustees to establish
a future scholarship fund for business students – contributed
to $11.8 million in non-operating revenue primarily for the
endowment and the foundation.
The endowment, invested in a diversified portfolio of domestic
and international assets, earned a noteworthy 12.3 percent
total return for the fiscal year, while The Whitworth Foundation’s
assets earned an 11.1 percent return. Combined, the long-term
investment assets of the college grew to just under $100 million.
The opening this fall of the stately, 160-bed Duvall Hall
dramatically enhanced the quality, quantity and character of
campus housing options. The new residence hall was financed
with long-term tax-exempt bonds at an attractive 4.3 percent
interest rate.

participation rate would have been 29.0%.
• With 2,562 alumni donors in Fiscal Year 2006, Whitworth’s 25.8-percent alumni participation rate exceeded
the previous year’s high. The alumni-participation rate reflects the percentage of undergraduate degreed alumni
who make a gift to Whitworth in any given year. This figure is an important measure of satisfaction that is
carefully considered by outside ranking and granting organizations. With 400-plus new graduates each year,
more than 100 alumni must be added to the annual donor rolls to maintain or improve the alumni-giving rate.
• In Fiscal Year 2006, 1,637 alumni, parents and friends made their first gift to Whitworth. New and continuing
donors contributed $1,359,026 to The Whitworth Fund, which supports student scholarships, campus
maintenance and other operational needs of the college. This is the second-highest total ever for The Whitworth
Fund, and the highest in the last seven years. Thank you!
• Of Whitworth’s 7,617 donors, nearly 46 percent belong to The 1890 Society, a giving club that recognizes
donors who give consecutively for three or more years.
The Whitworth Foundation
The Whitworth Foundation was established in
1972 with the purpose of helping individuals
establish planned gifts, such as charitable trusts
and gift annuities, that ultimately support the
Whitworth endowment. This year, in addition to their bequests and outside
trusts, alumni and friends donated a remarkable
$3 million in new planned gifts to the foundation.
These gifts provide an income for the donor and/
or the donor’s beneficiaries, with the additional
benefit of reducing or eliminating capital gains
taxes on appreciated assets and significantly
reducing estate taxes. Perhaps more important is
the fact that they ultimately support Whitworth.
We are extremely thankful to all who have included
Whitworth in their estate plans. Your investment will
yield great returns as our students take their place
in the world having been prepared through their
Whitworth “education of mind and heart”!

Determined Students Heed the Call of Hurricane Katrina
T
he students who helped clean
up after Hurricane Katrina as part
of a new Whitworth Jan Term study
program, “Communities in Crisis,”
didn’t forget the devastation they
witnessed. Upon returning from
Mississippi last January, they told
their classmates and professors,
families and friends, of seeing
boats in trees, stairways leading to
nowhere, an elegant platter lying,
shattered, in mud.
They showed photos of broken
belongings and broken lives. They
asked others to pray, to remember,
to give. And then, during Spring
Break, they went back.

“We saw the need, felt the call,
and returned to serve,” says Lydia
Garth, ’08.
A group of 15 students organized
the return trip. One student made
transportation and housing
arrangements. Another handled
meals. Yet another coordinated
the group’s volunteer assignments
through Presbyterian Disaster
Assistance. Two Whitworth staff
members accompanied the group
as assistants.
In Pearlington, Miss., the students
cleared debris from homes, sprayed
for black mold, and made and
stacked sandbags in knee-deep
mud. They distributed food and
clothing at God’s Katrina Kitchen,
and they cleaned their host families’
homes and yards.
“There was still debris everywhere,
missing street signs, and no power or
water in occupied neighborhoods,”
says Dan Fry, ’09. “An immense
amount of work remains to be
done.”
Though their return experience
was, in many ways, disheartening,
the students’ efforts weren’t in vain.
“It was beautiful to see so much
need and then do something about
it,” Garth says. “We helped change
people’s futures with our hands and
brighten their days with our smiles.
We helped families get a new start.”

Theatre Students Reflect Reality in Original Production
S
tanding on stage and telling an
audience about one’s physical
flaws is the stuff of nightmares for
most people. For the cast of Mirror,
Mirror: The Body Image Show, it’s all in
a night’s performance. Mirror, Mirror
is an original production created by
Whitworth theatre students who are
taking a stand against American
culture’s obsession with physical
appearance.
During the performance, the
actors draw from interviews, personal
experiences and popular culture and
use techniques such as improvisation,
story theatre and sketch writing
to explore the factors that shape
perceptions of body image. Each
new cast revises the show by
incorporating personal experiences
and information about current
national trends. The actors hold a
discussion session with audience
members after each performance.
Since its creation in 1997, Mirror,
Mirror has been performed at
Whitworth, at area high schools and
elementary schools, and on tour in
Washington, Oregon and Southern
California. A DVD recording of the
production will soon be available
for purchase by schools, community
groups, and individuals.
The power of Mirror, Mirror was
impressed upon Alicia Doyl, ’07, a
member of the 2006 cast, when,
after a performance at Whitworth for
high-school students, an emotional
student thanked the actors for doing
the show. The cast later learned
the student was struggling with an
eating disorder and that she was the
reason her class had come to the
performance.
“This show is important because it
helps people become more aware
of their own body-image issues,” Doyl
says, “and it lets them know they’re
not alone.”

Fans + Fortitude = Final Four
W
hen senior forward Todd
Sabrowski of Whitworth’s 2005
men’s soccer team “bent” the ball
into the net to score the winning
golden goal in OT over Trinity
University (Texas) in the national
quarterfinal match, “The crowd
went totally nuts,” says Whitworthian
sportswriter Colin Storm, ’07.
Storm, who describes that
electrifying moment as “one of
my best athletics memories at
Whitworth,” was one of more than
1,500 Whitworth fans who enjoyed
the NCAA Div. III playoffs, including
the quarter-final game in Spokane
that sent the Pirates to Greensboro,

N.C., to compete in the 2005
Final Four. The Bucs’ 19-2-1 season
– the team’s best ever – ended in
Greensboro in the semifinals, when
Minnesota’s Gustavus Adolphus
College scored the deciding goal
early in the second half for a
2-1 victory.
As just the second team from
the Northwest Conference ever to
advance to the men’s Final Four, the
Bucs credit their fans’ enthusiasm as
a crucial component of the team’s
banner season. “Without the fans’
support,” says senior defenseman
Trevor Osborne, “we wouldn’t have
been the same team.”
In the afterglow of the Pirates’
inspired season, two-time NWC
Coach of the Year Sean Bushey
speaks of his players – especially his
seniors – with pride. “Jon Carlson,
Evan Hendrickson, Trevor Osborne
and Todd Sabrowski truly defined the
team and willed us to be better than
our physical gifts,” he says. When
asked how the Pirates got past the
tough Trinity squad and into the Final
Four, Bushey mentions the relentless
pressure exerted by the Trinity team
and says of his players’ success, “We
stayed strong and confident. That
made the difference.”

Grant Gives Student Scientists a Jump on the Future
T
hanks to the Murdock Charitable
Trust, 10 of Whitworth’s best
students pursued important scientific
research during their summer
breaks. A two-year, $109,000 grant
from the trust, which has provided
financial support for a number of
innovative Whitworth programs,
funded fellowships to allow Kate
Fuller, Rachel Mellinger, Elizabeth
Pempe and Nick Strand, all ’07;
Alisha Anderson, John Anderson
(no relation), Preston Hoffman,
Amy Schlilaty and Kalen Spees,
all ’08; and Xander Knight, ’09,
to conduct summer research
with Whitworth’s newest science
professors. Research topics range
from neurodegenerative disorders
to environmentally friendly methods
for making plastics, and the research
teams’ goals are lofty: to improve
treatments for deadly diseases,
to advance space travel, to save
the planet.
Grant director and Associate
Professor of Physics Richard Stevens
expects that, in addition to edifying
current science majors, the program
will attract additional funding
from other national agencies. And
the students are grateful for the
opportunity to work with Whitworth
science faculty on projects that have
great potential to make a difference
in people’s lives.
Xander Knight’s work with Assistant
Professor of Physics John Larkin
and the program’s biomedicaloptics research group involves
researching a procedure known as
photodynamic therapy, which uses
photosensitizers and laser light to
treat cancer tumors. The sophomore
chemistry/physics major sees the
research program as a major step
in his education. “This program,” he
says,”has been an amazing tool for
me to learn about the research field
and to serve others right now through
this project. It also provides me with
a foundation and a desire to pursue
further research.”

beloved leader, scholar and
