By Cynthia Mendoza W hile founder Gloria Gaona doesn’t recall exactly how she came to name her organization Seeds of Hope, it is certainly a very apt description of the result of the work the organization does; planting seeds of hope of a brighter future for many of the working poor they serve. Based in Colton, Seeds of Hope was founded six years ago by Gaona shortly after her retirement from a lengthy career as an administrator with Los Angles County. The new web site includes information on all aspects of the school, which is affiliated with Crafton Hills College and recognized as a top teaching program for those individuals interested in becoming radiologic technologists. Because the school is hospital-based, students receive more clinical training and hands-on experience. The 23-month radiology training program accepts applications for new students from October through February and starts a new class each August. Raised in Colton, Salazar graduated from Colton High in 1960 and shortly thereafter attended barber college. He started working at was then called Charlie’s Barbershop, and location wise, on the corner of Mill and Rancho in what is now the Stater Bros shopping center, has been there since. In 1974 he bought the business and in the 70s and 80s he and his brother Al became partners for a while, thus the name, “Los Hairmanos”, a play on the words “hermanos” (brothers). As a barber, Salazar has experienced the fashion and style changes throughout the decades, from flattops, to the Beatles style hair during the 60s, the longer, feathery styles of the 70s and beyond. He also had many second and third generation customers, but states that the “old timers” are by far his largest clientele. And just who were some of the notable Colton “royalty” that Los Hairmanos served? “I gave Ken Hubbs his last haircut,” Salazar said, recalling seeing Colton’s beloved baseball icon come into the shop with a pilots manual just days before his airplane accident. Past and current clients also include Camilo Carreon (his wife’s uncle), Max Lofy, (then Mayor) Councilman Fran Gonzalez, Jerry Rios, Jim Hayes, Councilman Isaac Suchil, Ernie Cisneros, Jerry Young, former Colton Police Chief Jack Stratton, Ray Abril Jr., Rick Sanders, who played Minor League Dodger Baseball, Jack Lasby and several of the 1954 Little League World Series Champions, including Danny Carrasco, Norm Housely and others. And in between cutting so much hair, Salazar and his wife Lucy were also very involved parents who supported their four daughters in Carl Rimbaugh Girls Softball by managing the concessions stand. Third District Councilman Frank Navarro was one of Salazar’s clients and says he hopes to find a new barber soon who will provide a comparable level of service to Salazar. “He has great respect for his customers and he cares about doing the best job possible,” Navarro said. “We always enjoyed great conversation, he was very friendly, easy going and good natured. I have a lot of respect for him.” But even though he won’t be cutting their hair anymore, Salazar leaves his faithful customers with a few tips on selecting their new barber. “Don’t say short or long,” he says. “Just ask for a trim and go from there.” Saying long or short may not result in the desired outcome because the customers and barber may have a different opinion of what is short or long. “I always left it a little longer because I could make it shorter, but if it was too short couldn’t put it back,” he concluded. “I did that with all my customers. Hope, cont. from front She wasn’t sure what she was going to do with her time, but certainly didn’t expect to be doing what she does today. “God had another plan for me,” she said. Around that time, her son Richard Gaona Jr., whom she refers to as her prodigal son, was at a place where he was turning his life around for the better after battling his own demons, so to speak. He told her he felt the need to do something to help others. And thus, Seeds of Hope was born, an organization that helps, in Gaona’s own words, “the working poor”, families who have homes and jobs but are still very poor and struggling for survival. As someone who has also experienced great need in the past, she understands the struggle. “We want to bring dignity back to the people,” Gaona said. Today, Seeds of Hope provides a wide array of social services and information and referrals. If someone is in need of food, domestic violence assistance, housing information and other needs, Seeds of Hope does their best to provide or help find the service they need. And like many other organizations, during the holidays they also provide turkeys and toys. This Thanksgiving they gave out 100 turkeys and on Saturday, December 22, in partnership with Leno’s Rico Taco, they gave out toys to 350 children who may not otherwise have had any Christmas gifts. The event drew strong community support including Mayor Sarah Zamora, Councilman Isaas Suchil, City Clerk Eileen Gomez and others who came out to enjoy the morning and help put a smile on children’s faces. “Everyone who signed up got a toy,” Gaona said. And as soon as the holidays are over the work won’t stop; they will continue to work hard to serve those in need as best they can. Seeds of Hope, a non-profit 501 c 3 organization, is a family run operation made up of Gaona and her husband of 41 years, Richard, their two sons Richard and Steve and daughter in law Angelina, plus a host of volunteers. Every Friday after working a graveyard shift at his job, Steve Gaona picks up donations for Seeds Of Hope’s Friday community food giveawys, and Angelina, who serves as Gloria’s assitant, wears many different hats, doing whatever needs to be done. As head of the organization, Gloria Gaona leads by example. “I won’t ask anyone to do anything I’m not willing to do,” Gaona said about the level of commitment and service that she adheres to. “I thank God I’m able to do what I do. I love it.” Seeds Of Hope is located at 582 West Valley Blvd. Ste. 9 in Colton. For more information on the organization or to schedule an appointment, call (909) 8560741. Gomez ran over to the table and helped him as best as possible given that he was seated and it was impossible to do a full Heimlich maneuver, and within a few moments, Shaw was no longer choking and took a few sips of water. The column will appear on a regular basis in all our newspapers and I will use it as a forum for educational and community issues and happenings as well as some “chisme”. First let me thank all the people in the San Bernardino Community College District that voted for me. I thank you for your faith, confidence and respect. As I traveled throughout the district I know that the voters’ main concern is the availability of classes for students of all ages. Also as important to the voter is the appropriate of the taxpayers’ money. I will always keep that in mind and keep you informed. In that spirit, here is the information on how to apply to fill the vacancy left on the Board of Trustees with the election of James Ramos to the Board of Supervisors. This is official notice as provided by the District’s Chancellor: Applications are being accepted for Trustee of the San Bernardino Community College District. This appointment position terms out November 2014. Applicants must reside within the boundaries of the San Bernardino Community College District. Please visit the district’s website at sbccd.org to download the application. For questions and additional information, please contact the SBCCD Chancellor’s Office at 909 - 3824091. I encourage anyone interested to apply immediately since the deadline is January 4, 2013. Finalists will be determined by the Board of Trustees at their regularly scheduled meeting on January 17th and interviews will be held on January 24th. A decision is expected at that time in order to meet legal requirements. December has been a very busy month especially for those working to help the less fortunate in our community. Thank you to the service clubs, businesses, public and private agencies and community non-profits who have gathered food and gifts for families. While some of us contribute during the holidays, the non-profits in our community work year-around. Again thank you for all your work. It has been my pleasure to participate in many activities this month and here are just a few: Santa Claus luncheon at the National Orange Show. So many help this organization by volunteering year-round and no I did not win a tree this year. Crafton Hills Heritage Tea at Martha Greens. There were yummy treats and it was a wonderful way to say thank you to donors. Legacy Luncheon at the Mission Inn for donors to the Community Foundation serving the Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. Latin American Womens Holiday Dinner at the Redlands Country Club. Great to see the women in this group who now live all over the two county area still active and concerned about their communities. Meetings of the Oversight Committee for the dissolution of the San Bernardino Redevelopment Agency. This has been an interesting and frustrating experience for everyone involved and made worse by the state of the city. I have to commend the tiny staff and my colleagues on the committee for their dedication. I attended the reception for the new Mayor in Rialto, Deborah Robertson. We wish her well and much success. Later that evening I attended a victory celebration for congresswoman-elect Gloria Negrete McLeod. It was a joyous occasion and I especially enjoyed the introduction and honoring of the young campaign interns. Rialto Unified School District Holiday Luncheon at the invitation of Superintendent Dr. Harold Cebrun and Syeda Jafri. I had a great time. I was honored to speak at the Arrowhead District, Boy Scout Council dinner honoring Dr. Margaret Hill as its Distinguished Citizen for 2012. It’s not often I get to roast and pay tribute to such a fine lady. Happy Holidays Everyone! He is one of the company's Big-5 in popularity and sales, resting somewhere between icons LeBron James, Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, and Rory McIIroy. Upper Deck signed Donovan to an exclusive contract in April 2011, making Upper Deck the exclusive providers of his autographed trading cards, memorabilia and game used equipment. He carried a 60-pound knapsack throughout the trip. By R.A. Contreras I magine you are stuck on a slippery, cold, dark mountain. You have rocks barely the size of marbles jutting out of the side to hold on to. One slip of either your fingers or toes and disaster will most probably be imminent. Yet this is where Hector Guzman was exactly not too long ago. And he placed himself in this harrowing situation --- deliberately. This past September and October, Guzman, 20, of Colton, was a participant in the Outward Bound (OWB) program, an experiential educational workshop that utilizes real-life wilderness training and focuses teaching participants leadership skills by testing their mettle in stressful, yet guided and controlled settings. And fortunately for the San Bernardino Valley College sophomore, the hanging-on-the-side-ofthe-mountain scenario he found himself in was controlled: he did have a rope harness and the benefit of instructors with him; that is not to say, however, that the experience was any less nerve-racking. “To tell you the truth, out of all the situations I knew I was going to face, the rock climbing was going to be the most frightening,” he recalled. How Guzman found himself in the planned predicament was somewhat of a surprising one. Last year during the “Occupy” movements that sprang up all over the country, Guzman, along with his mentor and SBVC Financial Aid Scholarship coordinator Mary Valdemar, decided to start a business that would focus on helping those in the community. As they were planning what was soon to become the Chicano Indigenous Community for Culturally Conscious Advocacy and Action (ChiCCCAA) center, it hit upon Valdemar the idea of Guzman applying for the OWB program. “I attended OWB when I was 17 and [now] as an alumnus, I was able to nominate someone to attend, Valdemar said. “It was my first experience away from home and built a confidence that has spurred my passion for organizing and advocacy. Hector is [actually] the first student I’ve ever felt compelled to nominate. It’s a huge culture shift to take someone from our community and drop them off in the middle of the wilderness and it is an opportunity that few people of color have a chance to benefit from,” she reiterated. Guzman says ever since he was little, it had been a lifelong dream to live out in a wilderness-type setting. When he heard of the opportunity from Valdemar, his attitude was, “Let’s do this!” So began an arduous application process around March in which he submitted mountains of paperwork which included the requisite verifications, disclaimers, and disclosures. “Mary called me one day in July and told me I had been selected, and it was just a big relief,” he said. “I couldn’t wait to get started.” Guzman, who was the only participant selected from California, set out in early September with a group of 13 students and five instructors in the Idaho outback that included a river rafting course, forest and ground expedition, safety training, and rock climbing. Among many of the wonders he witnessed and experienced were scaling Mount Washington in Oregon and whitewater rafting the Salmon River in Idaho. However, on the third day, the reality of the test got to him. “We had to jump off a 20-foot cliff into the river and that’s when the butterflies hit. I had to go back and forth in my mind as I looked down into the river. I was fighting in my head thinking of the worst-case scenario. So I finally said to myself, ‘stop thinking about it and do it.’ It’s one of those things afterward, once you’re in the water, that you want to do over and over,” he said relieved. Weeks later into the 50-day expedition, a critical moment came when Guzman found himself stuck up on the side of the aforementioned mountain. “One time I slipped while on Mt. Washington, and went down and found myself hanging over the cliff. My heart was pounding and I didn’t want to look down. I knew the only way to get through it was to get my courage up. No one was going to come and get me,” Guzman recalled. Earlier this month, Guzman was honored with a Volunteer Service Award from the White House. “It is good to be appreciated, but it’s most important to continue helping others,” he says. He says that a common experience early on in life taught him empathy in an unlikely way. “When I was 8 years old, I was watching a wrestling program and one of the wrestlers was in a scene where he saw a Mexican family coming into the U.S.; he told them, ‘Get out of our country you Mexican [deleted],’ so that made a powerful impact on me. I knew that something wasn’t right about that and it was then I knew something had to be done.” He believes in a philosophy called “decolonization of the mind” and says that being openminded, empowering others and becoming aware is a powerful way to improve our communities --something he feels that is sorely needed in light of recent national tragedies. “Doors were opened for me and I want to open doors for others. Ignorance and fear goes hand in hand because there is a misunderstanding among people. This breeds hatred and many individuals become isolated. I want people to be more open-minded and understanding. We live in an individualistic society and that’s a big part of the problem,” he surmises. Valdemar, for her part, sees a bright future for her student and business partner. “Hector has [now] had an experience that proves what he is capable of. He has a deeper and more profound confidence and the ability to tap into something that few young people possess nowadays: wisdom, purpose and integrity. He is focused and driven to continue the exhausting and thankless work of trying to make change in this community. I believe that he will inspire many others through his leadership to follow the same path. His heart and compassion for our community will end up benefitting hundreds, maybe thousands of our youth and will help empower a generation to make change.” --- Vicente Rodriguez contributed to this story. ew findings of a largescale study at Loma Linda University suggest that vegans, people who do not eat meat, poultry, fish, dairy and eggs, are less likely than their non-vegetarian counterparts to be diagnosed with cancer, and specifically receive more protection against female-specific cancers, such as breast, uterine, ovarian, and other genital cancers. Findings of the Adventist Health Study – 2 (AHS-2) also suggest that vegetarians who consume dairy and eggs receive more protection from cancers of the gastrointestinal tract, such as cancers of the colon, stomach, and pancreas; while vegetarians who eat fish receive protection from cancers of the respiratory and urinary system. “These findings should give us a better understanding of the relationships between specific vegetarian subtypes with specific cancers,” says Dr. Yessenia Tantamango-Bartley, a professor at Loma Linda University School of Public Health and postdoctoral fellow with the AHS-2. She is lead author of the research, which was published in the November online issue of Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers Prevention. The findings used prospective data, which involves following subjects over time, of 69,120 Seventh-day Adventists participating in AHS-2. All AHS-2 participants filled out a questionnaire that asked how often they consumed more than 200 foods. Participants were then classified into a dietary category, based on their responses: Vegans, or people who abstain from meat, poultry, fish, dairy and eggs; Lacto-ovo vegetarians, or people who consume no meat, poultry and fish; and Pesco vegetarians, or people who consume no meat and poultry. “By doing this, we can study which specific diet has more or less protection from certain cancers,” says Karen Jaceldo-Siegl, DrPH, head of the AHS-2 nutrition section. Among the study’s findings: An association between vegetarianism, particularly those people who maintain a vegan diet, and all cancers, indicating mild but convincing protection from overall cancer risk. Vegetarians had less gastrointestinal cancers, including cancers of the colon, pancreas, liver, and stomach, especially among lactoovo vegetarians. Vegan women experienced fewer female-specific cancers; Pesco vegetarians seemed to have protection for cancers of the respiratory and urinary system. “This study suggests that vegetarian diets may decrease the incidence of all cancers,” says Dr. Gary Fraser, principal investigator of AHS-2. The AHS-2 began in 2002 as a study among members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church throughout the United States and Canada. The study investigates the role of foods and nutrients, as well as lifestyles and metabolic risk indicators, in causing cancer. A unique feature of the study is the participation of Seventh-day Adventist subjects, a population with a wide variety of dietary habits, as well as a very low percentage of alcohol consumption or cigarette smoking, non-dietary factors that may otherwise impact the study. By Cynthia Mendoza O n Friday, December 21, the local community held a second swearing in for new Assemblymember Cheryl Brown (47th Assembly District, formerly the 62nd) who was officially sworn in, in Sacramento on Monday, December 3 at the State Capitol. Assemblymember Brown represents the 47th Assembly District, which includes San Bernardino, Rialto, Colton, Bloomington, Fontana, Muscoy, and Grand Terrace. It is formerly the 62nd District, which was vacated by Wilmer Amina Carter who did not run for reelection due to term limits. “In addition to the state ceremony, which occurred last week, I have decided to hold a local swearing-in ceremony because so many people couldn’t go to Sacramento last week,” Brown said about her decision to hold a local swearing- in ceremony “I want my constituents to be a part of their government.” The ceremony and reception were held at the San Bernardino Government Center in downtown San Bernardino and brought together friends, family, and elected officials from throughout the area. “All of us here have at least two things in common, maybe more but at least two,” said San Bernardino Second District Supervisor Janice Rutherford, pointing PHOTOS/CYNTHIA MENDOZA Second District San Bernardino County Supervisor Janice Rutherford Rutherford described Assemblymember Cheryl Brown as a leader with intelligence, integrity and tenacity during Brown’s local swearing-in ceremony on Friday, December 21 at the San Bernardino County Government Center. to Brown, sitting in the front row in chambers. “We are here because we love California and because we love this lady.” Rutherford went on to describe Brown as a leader with intelligence, integrity and tenacity. Supervisor Josie Gonzales administered the oath of office. “I’m honored to have Supervisor Josie Gonzales administer the oath of office,” said Brown prior to the ceremony. “I deeply respect her leadership and early support of my candidacy. She is a person of high integrity and truly cares for her constituents and our community.” After the swearing in, Brown shared some of her goals and plans, starting with meeting with educational, political, legislative and community leaders to generate new ideas and work together for the betterment of all. “Education and job creation are critical to our economy,” said Brown. “In order to increase our economic growth, we need to make sure that our students are successfully completing their education.” And apart from the specific issues Brown addressed, she is simply excited and ready to get to work. “The swearing-in ceremony in the district brought it full circle for me and I finally feel that my destiny is here,” she said. “I’m ready to work for the people of the 47th Assembly District and I’m looking forward to the challenges and making a difference in a [new way].” For more information about the 47th Assembly District or to contact Brown, call (909) 820-5008. By Naomi Bonman F unerals are not only a sad occasion to plan, but they can also tend to be quite expensive. This is why there are funeral homes, such as Sunset Funeral Care that want to help families reduce the stress and financial burden of funeral arrangements. “We wanted to make it less over whelming and comfortable for families,” Jennifer Wright, licensed funeral director and embalmer, said. Antonio “Tony” Cuevas Jr., licensed funeral director added, “We are saving families a lot of money.” Sunset Funeral Care was opened on November 17, 2012 by licensed funeral director and embalmer Jennifer Wright and licensed funeral director Antonio “Tony” Cuevas Jr. Both Cuevas and Wright wanted to start their own funeral home. Cuevas studied business while in college and saw an interest in working in the funeral industry, and from there he decided to combine the two. Wright has always wanted to be a funeral director since she was a little girl. Cuevas and Wright later became business partners and started Sunset Funeral Care. “With the prices of funerals rais- ing the timing was perfect,” Wright said. Sunset Funeral Services offers a variety of services to families at half the cost than their competitors within the city and surrounding areas. They also include all-inclusive packages that consist of the casket; professional services; emballing or refrigeration; dressing and preparation; service programs or prayer cards; and a variety of other services. There are also direct burial and cremation services available. Since Wright and Cuevas are both aware of the costs of funeral services and realize that there are families out there that need extra financial assistance, Sunset Funeral Care also provides several options for financial assistance. Other financial burdens is planning funerals for veterans. There are times when families will come in to make funeral arrangements for their loved one that was a veteran and are under the impression that the Veterans Adminstration (VA) takes care of everything. However, the VA only takes care of arrangements if the death was service related. Sunset Funeral Care offers discounts to veterans and their spouses. IECN PHOTO COURTESY SUNSET FUNERAL CARE Jennifer Wright, licensed funeral director and embalmer; and Antonio “Tony” Cuevas Jr., licensed funeral director, opened Sunset Funeral Care this past November. They offer a variety of funeral and cremation arrangements at more affordable prices than that of their competitors. “They (veterans) do a lot of our Country, so we wanted to give back to them,” Cuevas said. Sunset Funeral Care also offers in-home arrangements. For those who are unable to drive or make it out to the funeral home. People can call and have a funeral director come and meet them at their house. In the future Sunset Funeral Care hopes to open up their own cemetery and open up homes in Beau- mont and Yucaipa. By them having their own cemetery it will bring a peace of mind to the families by be able to have everything serviced through one company. In addition to more locations, Wright and Cuevas want to continue to build their community partnerships. Currently they are part of the California Funeral Directors Association (CFDA), Rotary Club of Redlands, Bonnes Meres, the Unforgettables and the Orange Bell Funeral Directors. Wright serves as a board member for the Unforgettables and Orangebell Funeral Directors. For more information on Sunset Funeral Care please visit www.sunsetfuneralcares.com or call (909) 334-4017.
